The only problem is that 40 damage guns are made useless in OD, and by Medics in general because 40 damage guns still broke in ammo pickup if you got a decent number of headshots. Medics fucked up that pickup ratio by doubling the required ammo usage so they're just not that viable anymore, not to mention the fact that they're so fucking fat.

I'll preface this by saying I'm new to Payday 2, I've had it for ages but up until a week ago I had like 10 hours on it total.

Can dodge offset less armour or is one clearly better than the other? I like running around with akimbo weapons/shotguns and on Overkill/Mayhem and I'm kinda pulling it off but I'm using the heavier armour, but I hate how fucking ugly it looks. Is it viable to have the same playstyle whilst still being able to look stylish?

It doesn't sound difficult in theory, but in practice it's extremely trying. Pubs often ignore voice chat and text chat. That's if you're lucky enough to even have pubs that speak the same language as you.
Overkill would know these things if they bothered to play their own game, or listen to the community.
Which, to their credit, I suppose they did, in a way. Recent achievements have been "everyone in your crew" rather than specifying a 4 man crew.

Why is the deployable balance so shite?

In this game, you'll always expend ammo, health and ultimately downs while going through the game and deployables are supposed to restore these to help you progress.
Problem is, there are features in place that can naturally restore everything except downs.

FAKs are made pretty much useless because of hostage taker and health regen perk decks, they can prevent downs but don't restore armor, meaning on higher difficulties you can get downed immediately after consuming it.

Ammo bags are made useless because of enemy ammo drops and not keeping yourself topped off from the ammo of your kills makes you bad in the eyes of most.

Tripmines are useless because they are 14 charges of kills that you can do yourself, they can be used to guard objectives but they can only protect it from enemies for the length of one tick up to 10 seconds, if you have the firetrap or not.
They are also weaker than the GL40, which can regen ammo.
Shaped charges though are 6 units of map specific objective acceleration, which can or can not be useful.

Sentries are useless because they suck up ammo and die quickly.

Armor bags are shit, period.

The stealth deployables are all useful at what they do.

By that logic the most generally useful loud deployable is the doctor bag, with shaped charges taking a situational niche, the rest are all considered a mark of a shitter.
