MMR (matchmaking rating). Depending on which server you play on, climbing diamond is a pain in the ass and you need to actually have a lot of knowledge about the game to get high there. Unless of course you're playing on a shitty server. EUW and KR have the most competitive soloQ.

If your MMR is way higher than a division you can skip one division. Your MMR is hidden which sucks. You can't skip from G1 to P4 though, you only get placed in P5.

3v3 is such an interesting mode.
In normals and bronze-gold, there is only one meta. Two solo laners + jungler.
As soon as you hit Plat, it's like the entire game changes. There are now suddenly two metas. Jungler, and the new Solo Bot + Hypdercarry/Support top, no jungler.
Once you hit diamond and above, it's almost completely support comp.

I wish 5v5 had interesting meta shifts like this. Jungle comps are much easier to play with random pubbies, but if you have communication then support is simply the superior way to play, as you are able to get both a solo lane and the entire jungle onto one hypercarry.

3v3 is just so interesting, I wish it had more support and players interested in it.

jungle is more viable now, and is able to contest support. you see more jungle on NA than EU, which is pretty much all support past gold. About half of the challengers in NA run jungle comp and the entire gameplan is to buttfuck the enemy team by 2:15 and keep the gas on from there, since if you steal the jungle from the hypercarry, he is essentially just a shitty toplaner with an anchor

in terms of support comp, i dont think its ever been this varied in terms of top tier picks/comps. braum/sej/taric/tahm/poppy/mao/lulu/janna/kayle/nunu are all top tier picks off the top of my head for supports.
jax/yas/j4/xin/yi/almost every marksman/kayle/illaoi/darius/fiora are all top tier picks, which is like ~20 different hypercarries right there
as far as AP bot, brand/anivia/vlad/lulu/syndra/malz/morg/ziggs/annie/vel/viktor/swain/liss/cass/taliyah are all either top tier or extremely viable and would not look out of place in diamond and above

include junglers and the vast majority of the cast is viable in TT, hell you have unironic shaco support being played consistently in challenger, AP bard is common, etc.

there isnt even CLOSE to that much diversity in SR for roles

These aren't people you practice with, none of you are going to come up with the same strategies to win, and if you somehow, by whatever miracle, end up on the same page, there will always be a team mate that fucks up everything by getting caught or Blitz-hooking the enemy Amumu right on top of your carries.

League of Legends is a team game in the sense that you win or lose by your team, however, to say that you have no impact on whether your team wins is nothing more than excuse-making for hardstuck shitters.

If you don't consistently win lane in ~90% of your games, you don't deserve to climb since you are obviously not performing above your elo. If you are a solo laner who isn't making the enemy jungler's life hell, then you don't deserve to climb. If you're ADC and not taking first turret and winning in CS, if you're support and not getting your midlaner kills at level 4, if you're the jungler and not getting FB at level 3, you simply do not deserve to climb.

Climbing is all about very high and consistent levels of performance across all of your games. It doesn't matter if your bot lane feeds or your jungler is a potato, as ANY role in the game, you should be able to win your lane AND someone else's. If you can't, you don't deserve to climb. Going even in lane every game is not how you carry. You don't rank up just for showing up and being too scared or unskilled to make risky plays and come out ahead.

This won't explain everything but here's how some pushing works.
Basically if the wave is closer to their turret the wave will slowly push harder to yours. If you want to push the wave the fastest kill cannons then caster then melee.
If numbers of creeps are not equal on both sides that can cause pushing. You have to juggle all of this with your opponent to push the wave around and to not attack it at certain times to make it stand still.
You have to do this while deciding when your opponent attacks the wave by zoning them so they don't make it push.

Why is pic related so rare?

I'm currently Plat 4 on a Poppy-only smurf, trying to climb my way to diamond. In the ~120 games since I started, I've seen Poppy picked 0 times and banned 0 times. I get her every single game.

However, the amount of top laners I do see picked can be counted on one hand: Jax, Darius, Galio, Fiora (before this recent nerf), and Kled. Sometimes you'd see the odd Vladimir top or Pantheon, but they were few and far between.

It's hard to believe that such a waifu-able champ is absolutely nowhere to be found in this game.

Well she requires a different playstyle than before.

When she was briefly overpowered, Poppy could build full tank and still murder her lane opponent at 6. Now she needs to rush Triforce in order to stay relevant, but I honestly feel like it's a much more fun way to play her anyways.

I'll probably write a guide for her once I hit diamond, but right now I take ignite into lane and get FB like every single game. Then once you finish your Triforce and Swiftness Boots, she becomes something of a monster. Super fun champion. There are few things more satisfying than E-ing to a minion to chase after a fleeing foe, and then taking them out with a 350 damage spellblade Shieldy.

I got placed with a shit run of placement matches too. Literally all you have to do is pick something with not shit wave clear and set up pushes top and bottom. It doesn't win every game, but it'll definitely get you a silver border in short order because nobody in bronze manages them, and they'll aram down mid while minions take their towers.

If you're stuck there, it wasn't because of your placement matches. You can get unlucky with placements, but you just blitz on through to the MMR you're supposed to be at. If you're struggling, especially in Bronze, it suggests something other than bad luck.

How TO freeze the lane?
After the wave bounces back from the enemy tower, the enemy creeps will naturally push toward you.
You leave 4 ranged creeps (and preferably a melee minion to tank for the caster) alive, and let the enemy creeps kill yours until it's close to your tower where you're safest.
There will be enough enemy creeps leftover (and this will increase until you start culling a few) to continue having the pushing/damage advantage over your creeps.
If all your creeps die, you need to tank the minion damage without hitting them otherwise they will run into your tower, die, and the wave bounces back.
You reset the creep aggro when your own creeps arrive, by running into a brush.
The enemy creeps then kill all your creeps again, you take out a few (you don't want to end up with like 7+ ranged creeps or it gets out of control), tank the rest and repeat.

Poppy is excellent at chasing and kiting because of her W. Not only does it slow, but if you position it right, they'll be forced to take the second proc if they continue to chase/flee. Triforce and Swiftness Boots give you the speed and burst to do pretty much whatever you want to your lane opponent, and there's rarely anything they can do to stop you.

After Triforce, I'll start building full tank. Gargoyle Stoneplate I found is probably the best item in the entire game, but it should be your third or fourth item. Second item should be a health item that gives Armor/MR depending on their comp and who is fed, and your third item should be health item that gives the other resistance. Hexdrinker is an exception, especially if you're ahead, because I take mastery that increases shield strength.

Current buildpath usually goes like this:

Boots > Mana Crystal > Sheen > Boots of Swiftness > Triforce > Bramble Vest or Hex Drinker > Deadman's or Sunfire > Gargoyle Stoneplate

As for playstyle? Play around your passive and you can absolutely dominate your lane opponent under their own tower. Poppy is flexible in teamfights because she can either assassinate squishies (pretty easy to 100-0 an ADC if you land your stun and your ignite is up) or provide some of the best peeling in the entire game. If your ADC or mage is fed, you can just protect them and autowin any team fight pretty much.

Although I'd recommend rushing a Knight's Vow right after you finish Boots of Swiftness and Eye of the Equinox. Then build a Spirit Visage.

Not only does it make you really fast and tanky for not a whole lot of gold, but you'll be CDR capped and the healing you get from your ADC will make you pretty much immortal in team fights.

I might be explaining wrong but I'll try.
Let's say we have waves A, B and C for each side - At this point you've pushed with your wave and you're arriving at the enemy tower.
So your A wave is at the enemy tower, right? Mostly full HP because you helped kill the enemy A wave.
Your wave A is attacking the tower, the tower is hitting them.
The enemy B wave is coming up and often gets to you (at the enemy tower) around halfway through your wave dying, let's say.
Once the tower + enemy B wave finish off what's left of your A wave, the enemy B is already there (in lane) and ready to start moving against you.
The enemy B wave, and your B wave will meet and start battling, generally closer to the enemy's side (because while A wave was standing at their tower killing your A wave, your B wave is walking unhindered through the lane).
Now because they meet closer to the enemy side, that means the enemy wave C will get to the battle first, because your wave C has longer to run before they get to the fight.
Enemy wave C then gets there and then you have the enemy B and C wave, attacking just your B wave.
By the time your wave C gets there, the damage is done, your creeps have been out-damaged and instead of the wave being 50/50, it's now 70/30 in the enemy's favour, so they'll keep going and push against your creeps who are fighting a losing battle.

Lux does bring nice tools once she already gets to a side lane from mid lane but there is 1 major, fatal flaw in her roams: she can very easily be intercepted on her way, bent over and fucked mercilessly. Not even landing the snare and trying to run away will be enough a lot of the time. This applies to all immobile squishy mages though some have better defensive capabilities.
You will argue about not having all the way to a side lane if you are going to just snipe something with the ult but that is flawed as well: you will probably have your camera on the side lane, not on yourself, leaving you even more exposed to getting killed.
Roaming as lux is very risky unless your jungler is right alongside you or your team has a lot of control and vision of the map.

I think viktor is fun and unique though but I guess most people think he is boring and farm oriented.
You can actually play very aggressive in a lot of matchups as long as you respect their jungler

His level 1 with Q start is one of the best in midlane. (its not cassio or orianna levels but still really good.)

While you're not wrong, I addressed this earlier. You don't want to roam bot unless you either have the scuttle speed boost, or their jungler is spotted in the other lane (in which case you can gank through their jg). This is why early boots is important if you plan on roaming with lux and carrying the game, because odds are that level 5 Xin is not going to have T2 boots, so you aren't a completely free kill if he happens to find you outside of your lane.

There are some faggots who managed to drop below lv2 already. I've seen a screenshot of someone showing a profile with honor lv3 but it could very well have been photoshopped.
Riot mentioned that the honor level progression is supposed to be slow and an spread over time (I guess they learned from the 1st iteration of it where after a few days everyone but hardcore all chat flamers had the honorable opponnent badge) but with lv5 being max and lv2 being the starting one we should already have started seeing healslut e-grills with lv3 after all the "GG <3"s received from thirsty beta males. I think the system should have been more granular, with an additional level (current lv1 being lv0 for example) to help make a distinction between people who are lv2 right now. Also basically all of the rewards are tied to lv3 right now (load screen border, capsules AND end of season rewards) with lv4 and lv5 being mostly cosmetic making progression to lv3 NEED to be hard.
