Unity. Though, there is no need to interact with the engine.

The images are for in-game events. I think the 2d art gives it that little extra touch.

Here is an image of how it is implemented in game. We use the space backgrounds and super-impose them on the PNGs, so it gives that procedural feel.

>>183255993
I'm going to preface this with the worst part of all. It's a roguelike. The goal is to stay a NEET as long as possible and balance the precarious bridge between too much depression, resulting in suicide, and too little depression, resulting in stopping being a NEET. Keeping yourself clean/fed/healthy are important and keeping yourself in a steady supply of NEETbux. If you ever played Reigns it has an event system similar to it.

So I just found out about jmonkeyengine
I only know java and a bit of c++ at this point, so I feel like this is my best bet to make a nice 3d game. Anyone ever work with it? I want to make a fast-paced multiplayer fps, but I dunno if java is fast enough for it. It'll have very simple graphics and textures and shit, I'm not looking to make the new COD, I'm thinking more of something in the vein of cs 1.6.
>>
So /agdg/, once you actually progress to the point you think a release will happen within the next six months, how do you get your name out there and actually advertise yourself?

what are some methods of healing for a 2D game

because currently I'm probably gonna steal the estus system like everyone else
>>
>>183256319
Well, I like the premise. I am familiar with Reigns and the consequence system they employ. I can see something similar going quite well for that kind of game. You also mention it is going to be in the roguelike genre. I'm curious about what exploration a NEET does. What kind of dungeon crawling does the NEET do?

>methods of healing
Nigger the limit is as high as your imagination. You could make attack combos heal, breaking angel statues could heal, kicking enemies could heal, completing a level in a certain time could heal.
>>
>>183256663
You've got a lot at your disposal. Bandages, potions, salves, herbs, food, magic of all kinds, prayer, meditation, I could go on.
>>

>too daunted to actually start work on it
i'm the same guy as >>183256532
and was gonna do something more simple than this super ambitious idea, but I was just kinda curious if it'd be possible to make in java at all or if I'd have to learn c++. It doesn't have to look AAA, but at least as nice as oblivion. I have no idea how to work connections and shit and have more passion about the rpg game, but I have no experience and don't want to waste my ideas on a shitty version of the game with cut corners due to my current incompetence

Well, finally wrapping tonight up at 2am, got an appointment with orthopedist at 11am and probably work right after.

Still working on my tank game to get myself some experience using GMS2..not going to lie I really struggled tonight, I feel kind of down about myself. It'll probably be hard to fall asleep feeling so disappointed. But I at least figured out the collisions, I suppose my huge leaps forwards in figuring out the movement caught up with me, so I suppose I'm right on track.

I still couldn't figure out how to get the bullet to work, I'll give it another try tomorrow, but I think I might really be stuck. I'd have to give up on only my second project. I've gotta think positive, its probably something goofy. I'll try to track down a tutorial and follow it step-by-step.

>no time to dev
This is a fundamentally flawed idea. If you want to accomplish something, if its something you truly desire, you will think about it all the time, to the point that something MUST come of it, good or bad. By devving, you will relieve those thoughts, and actually find that you will have more fun devving than anything else, because it is moving you towards your greater goal.

If you do not find joy in moving towards your life's goal, then what you are trying to move towards is not your life's goal. Your life's goal is something else. Comfort and amusement maybe. Maybe distractions. Whatever you get joy out of doing reflects your life's goal. If you feel you must do that over doing what you THINK is your goal, then you are simply wrong.

I work 50 hours a week as a plumber, I go to University full-time and I do correspondence school to work towards my journeyman plumber card, and I still find about 4 hours a day to dev, and all day I can't think about anything else other than what I'll do once I start devving. Because its my goal, so it consumes me, and the fact that I am always a sleepless overworked wreck has no bearing on my ability, energy level, or desire when I am devving. It's my light at the end of the tunnel, so its all I think about.

You should really do some meditation about what you really want out of life, maybe read a book to sort out your thoughts about what you really want and make a real plan on how to get there. There's always going to be some circumstance that will make it inconvenient to dev at the time "I'm too tired, my job sucks, I had a hard day, I'm hungry, too many chores, I'm busy" but honestly, if you just did a small thing each day, and you had done that through all those times, how far ahead would you be? Think about that.

>>
>>183265348

>>
>>183262429
You haven't failed until you give up. 50 declines is nothing. If you have a dream and what you are doing isn't getting you there, you should try other paths. Achievement is not a passive sport. If its what you want, then its all you should be thinking about, and all of your actions should move you closer to it.

Don't wait or look for an opportunity, make one. Make your own game, get some college kids into the project with it being a passion project for all of you, lead the team yourself and make something. Once you've achieved success, step back and re-evaluate what you learned and what you believed before. If you fail, then make another opportunity in a different way.

Ok, going to be really honest with you here. This sounds like nodev fantasies. You're just going to make fun of me because its low level stuff, but I don't care. I just started on GMS2, and before that I was learning coding for the purpose of being able to make a game, at the same time I was brushing up on my math with some books from B&N so I could go back to college, while studying for an EPA 608 license exam.

I posted a few days ago that I finished my stupid little pong game, but it got ignored. Today I worked on my tank game, though I got a lot more time because doctor's appointment tomorrow, and all I had to do was coding, GMS2, math, EPA exam studying, and my correspondence test.

Its stupid and small, but small steps are better than no steps. I've been locked down in either 2 jobs or turbo-long days for over 3 years, and even though I never always found time and even though some days I just went straight to sleep and even though some other days I felt hopeless or depressed, having the thought of one day making a great video game that was talked about kept me going, and it still keeps me going. Its pretty much the first thought I have during the day and the last. I literally dream about it.

My point isn't to brag or look down on someone, my point is that some people believe they want something, or they convince themselves something is important to them, but they cannot seem to move towards it. The only reason this could be is if it wasn't really important to them, because if it was, there'd simply be nothing that could prevent them from at least trying, succeed or fail. Its as certain as a rock falling down when you throw it up, or 1+1=2.

So, what is more important - making new content or adding juice?
I mean, you are goint to do both eventually, but what comes first? It seems I never can decide what to do after making first level/implementing base mechanics - juicing up already created content, or add the rest on content and add juice only after that.
>>
>>183266347
adding content extends the playtime

Buddy you have no place to lecture anyone when your accomplishments total to less than 5 hours of any actual work. That's like looking at someone who hasn't started running the marathon yet from 100ft in and trying to lecture him. Seriously, just stop, you're embarrassing me and all I'm doing is reading your posts.

>>183265946

>>
>>183266347
Do whichever provides more value at the time. Content is additive, juice is multiplicative ( if you juice common elements and not, say, a specific boss fight). The best plan imo is to make the core content, juice the fuck out of it, and then add in more content.

The line between juice and content isn't always clear, either. Adding in small details to a scene can improve it without changing the actual gameplay at all.
>>
>>183265946
You're day dreaming/dreaming of success, not of dev, you need to learn the difference. I'm rooting for you, but you need to get some perspective.
>>
>>183266693
>>183266837
But it didn't start with GMS2. It started before that, with RPGM, then I started to learn ruby coding but hated it, lost my way for a while because of a crappy job (like I said, lots of wavering), then I came back to it and started learning to code again, I bought a book on C++ but once again, I just fell out of it, got a 2nd job and then got an HVAC certification class schedule, but while I was doing that as childish and wimpy as it sounds, I discovered code academy and code combat and started learning HTML & CSS, then I tried unity and really didn't like it, then tried RPGMMV and it was okay...I tried Gadot and didn't like the lack of resources to answer my questions, only over the last 2 weeks did I start playing around with GMS2 and that's what was produced.

My point wasn't that I'm super smart or super hard working, its that even with my retarded schedule and no life, I know its what I really want because I can't stop thinking about it. All of my actions from then until know revolve around that desire. All of those failures and all of the grief when I quit, and all of the revitalization I felt when I tried again. My point is that you know something is important to you when you continuously move forwards, even if when moving forwards you take turns that lead to dead ends.

>>183267028
If I was just dreaming of success, then I'd do the BIG PROJECT plague, which isn't what I'm doing. I'm learning step-by-step and doing small projects first. Everytime I've tried a big project its always failed, so like when I changed what I was studying over and over, I changed my goal and will try that. So far its been a success, because I created something, which was faster than I had ever done before.

I think you're just looking for things to put me down on. Not sure why.
>>
>>183267386
Again the more I'm reading the more I'm seeing that you don't have any place to be lecturing other people. In your initial posts you were acting like your shit smelled like roses. You need to actually focus on something, your life sounds confused and muddled.

>straw man
I'm not even going to read this. I made a valid point with my own personal experience to validate it, and now suddenly you know everything about my life and are attacking my credibility for a piece of wisdom that is pretty much known all over the world? Get real.

I live in a place with one of the highest rates of unemployment in the USA, with a collapsing economy, homeless all over, a government that just had to lay of 18,000 state workers, and now I have to worry about gangsters and fucking bears walking around the city because there's no salmon for them to eat because the state government wanted tourist money. My life isn't confused, my life is pretty simple.

You are making a lot of judgements about things you know literally nothing about, and saying that I've accomplished nothing, so I should quit? Whatever dude. You have a status quo of "give up, be miserable, I can't win, I am a failure, I can't succeed, nothing works, booho"

Now you are trying to keep that status quo, and I'm not buying it. That's your status quo, not mine, and did I say in my post, "hey I want to post what I believe but I should really run it by the most popular anons first so give me a minute"

No, I didn't. You've trained yourself so fully to keep your shitty attitude, that you can't even accept a piece of COMMON KNOWLEDGE without turning it back around to reinforce your status quo.

But the only one that's keeping the status quo is YOU. If you took a puppy and you beat him everyday, yelled at him, what's going to happen when you one day try to pet him, love him, care for him? He's going to cower and run.

That's what you've done to YOURSELF. These things also work in reverse, by acknowledging common knowledge like what I posted. Your little tantrum about how I'm pathetic for not having found the path to what I want to do is totally irrelevant. Give me a break.

I'm out of here, beat your own self up.

Don't get me wrong, i liked it a bunch and i beat it with every character, but the game really isn't polished nor did it age well.

>>
>>183272517
You should try to pick a background color that isn't so close in tone to the rest of your palette.

Either way, your armor is much better than that one. Always, always always avoid that random pattering you're using on the rock and hilt and take some time to look at how experienced artists chose colors and do stuff like details on rocks.

I would seriously suggest starting out at a much lower res than you're using right now, maybe like 16x16 or 24x24 and working out how pixel art actually works before trying to work at these reses. Either that or learn to draw like that other guy said.

Eventually I want to make a Zoo Tycoon clone but I've realized it's a little too far beyond me right now. Any ideas for an intermediate project?

So it does have a lot of options.

When you are underwater I want it to get darker at depth.

My current way of thinking is to use water level percentage to determine depth and apply to fog density.

Is there a better way with like a shadow box that you can shade different colors?

I think fog is the wrong approach.

Picture is kind of what i'm looking for.

i'm assuming you're using a 2d drawing as reference? try using images of actual humans in combination with 2d/3d characters.

what I do when i sculpt characters is to create two characters and keep switching between them. I improve the seconds one after working on the first one and then go back to use what i've learned from the other one an apply it. then i just keep going back and forth, working a few hours/days on one of them at a time. it might not work as well for you but i found it to be a great way to improve character sculpting

How do games add new abilities/passives to a character and the player?
The only way I can think of is just "if HasPassiveA then DoPassiveAStuff"
But that seems like it would get really messy with more than a few abilities and passives. And especially abilities that might affect the world, like making more ammo spawn or more health spawn, how should the game know that the player has that ability?

i have back/side/front references.
i've only sculpted a total of an hour on organic stuff so far, so it's kind of hard, but i also kind of like it.
I basically got the proportions and general shape from the reference, and now i'm just randomly trying to add details in places for muscles/crevices based on either random references or my own intuition.
So i just add some geometry, blur it, rinse and repeat until it looks right.

Probably there's probably some invalid memory access going on. This can happen on these situations (not exhaustive) :

- You casted something to an incompatible type.
- You didn't alloc enough memory for the structure.
- You used an out of bounds index somewhere.
- You are being butt fucked by the compiler and it's aliasing/memory access expectations.
- The build system didn't rebuild certain files after you changed a declaration in a header.

I'm wondering if there's a out-of-the-box solution in Unity, to prevent unnecessary work.

You can get close to Unreal-level quality in Unity 5 if you're willing to drop money on the asset store for volumetric lighting, screen-space shadowing, colored shadows, etc.

I couldn't find any plugins on the asset store for distance field lighting or real-time GI, though.

At the end of the day, most indies are working on 2d pixel-shit or low-poly games that are at the lowest end of modern graphics, so I don't think it matters.

Ok, let's be honest.

I'm starting to think gameplay doesn't matter.
Let me explain why.
99.9% of games released are basically rehashes of games that were invented in the mid 90's

We've been playing the same 3D games that were released since psx, and nobody cares.

But I do think for today gamers, you simply literally need to write a good story and /v/ and normies will be sucking yo dick.

Think about it, just a good story and make the game revolve about it, and you will have 99 metacritic, even if the gameplay is basic as fuck and the graphics are bad.

Seriously, that's how easy is to make it today in videogame industry.

The fact that gameplay can be unoriginal doesn't mean it doesn't matter. Even if consumers have been playing the same games, that doesn't mean they would play any game in spite of how terrible the gameplay is. There are lots of games they don't play after all.

Do you actually even understand how voxel cone tracing works?

http://maverick.inria.fr/Publications/2011/CNSGE11b/GIVoxels-pg2011-authors.pdf

While off-line computation and pre-baking can be acceptable for some cases, many applications (games, simulators, etc.) require
real-time or interactive approaches to evaluate indirect illumination. We present a novel algorithm to compute
indirect lighting in real-time that avoids costly precomputation steps and is not restricted to low-frequency illumination.
It is based on a hierarchical voxel octree representation generated and updated on the fly from a regular
scene mesh coupled with an approximate voxel cone tracing that allows for a fast estimation of the visibility and
incoming energy. Our approach can manage two light bounces for both Lambertian and glossy materials at interactive
framerates (25-70FPS). It exhibits an almost scene-independent performance and can handle complex
scenes with dynamic content thanks to an interactive octree-voxelization scheme. In addition, we demonstrate that
our voxel cone tracing can be used to efficiently estimate Ambient Occlusion.

Are you legitimately retarded? Enlighten has a pre-computation step that requires baking GI into the scene, and thus does not work with dynamic objects. VXGI has no pre-computation step, and everything is calculated in real-time. There is no limitation on dynamic objects since the GI calculation is not baked.

Voxelization is done in real-time while the application is running. 100% of the required computations for a full dynamic scene is real time. Enlighten requires pre-computation and does not support dynamic objects in scenes.

It seems pretty straightfoward.

VXGI = 100% realtime GI with 100% dynamic scenes
Enlighten = Precomputed GI with realtime tweaking on static pre-baked objects only.

No, in Unity you literally do not get dynamic GI on any object that is movable. Enlighten only supports realtime GI where all possible light bounces are pre-computed beforehand, which is impossible to achieve with objects that are not guaranteed to be static.

Unity 5 does not support realtime GI for any object that can move. Period. Fullstop. It does not support GI on dynamic objects.
>>
>>183292149
That is extremely ugly. I realize you are a zealot and nothing I can say will convince you otherwise, but it needs to be stated regardless.

any object can be lit by enlighten, any object can be a lightsource for enlighten. it's only the bounce surfaces that need to be precomputed because otherwise realtime raytracing would be literally impossible.

I won't disagree. I haven't played many AAA games from this gen, so my sense of what looks good is a bit skewed.

Let me tell you EXACTLY why.

Random loser wanders into /agdg/ and thinks that just because he spends 16 hours a day playing video games, he has what it takes to be a game developer.
Instead of actually taking initiative and attempting to learn something, he asks the question "Which engine is best for x game?", believing that he'll receive an answer like "Retard-proof Engine has a drag and drop system where you drag a game into the scene and you have a game".
However, he quickly realizes that there's this thing called programming, this thing called art, this thing called not being a lazy slob who plays video games 16 hours a day.

There's three paths he takes after that:
1)Go back to being a huge loser, which is what most people do
2)Don't learn stuff, while pretending to be gamedeving something and posting things like "I'm depressed and I can't make game" or the classic "where's your game"
3)Learn stuff.
>>
>>183292601
>it's only the bounce surfaces that need to be precomputed

Light bouncing is literally the only thing that separates GI from direct lighting.

> otherwise realtime raytracing would be literally impossible.

Unless you use something like voxel cone tracing for GI :)
>>
>>183292915
voxel cone tracing precomputes the scene too. voxelization is not free. enlighten performs much much faster than vxgi for that reason.
>>
how do I scam people on mobile?
>>
>>183292975
Call old ladies and pretend to be their grandsons who got into an accident?
>>
>>183292972

How can you possibly be this dense? There is zero, 0, no pre-computation with voxel cone tracing. Nothing in the scene requires pre-computation. Nothing is computed before the scene is run. No pre-computation is required.

Everything in the scene is computed at runtime. In real time. 100% of the scene is voxelized in real time. While the game is running.

How are you possibly not understanding this simple concept yet.

Any suggestions on how I'd do the water here? I don't mean the sprites; that I more or less get. But do you think it would be best to have the water destroyed when it leaves the screen, or a certain short distance past, or a specific distance from the player, or what?

I just don't want it spraying halfway across the map and putting out fires the players haven't even seen yet.

Make a "game" that runs multiple ads in the background while a "loading screen" is loading. But obviously this is the entire game. Just a loading screen that never finishes, with ads.
Find a nice looking PC game, take the screenshots of that game and run them through a color filter so they don't look exactly like the real screenshots. Use those screenshots on the google play store. Also make sure you set the version number to something like "1.3" and have some change notes like "fixed bugs, added new content" so it looks like the game is active.

Being able to access public servers is the only way you could feasibly find a match with that game, otherwise you have to buy multiple copies and manually set up a game between yourself and your friends which of course makes gogem more money (in his imagination, in reality nobody cares and let the game sink to the bottom).

It's kind of irrelevant considering there was never a playerbase for the game or ever going to be one, but I guess he thought it was clever.

>gogem is going to get what he always wanted
>attention for child rape and murder "games"
Yes gogem is going to push for it because he thinks it's what he wants. He actually thinks all of this will work out for him because he's been sheltered and coddled so much even while doing such scummy things.

He has no real concept of heat because he thinks provoking middle aged parents over school shootings was as hot as it gets. He's never really managed to disgust and offend the gamerbase enough, but it's coming, and some very NEET people who hate him very much are going to make him their project. He is a pedophile and child harm advocate and also is taking a steamy shit on videogames in general. He has been waiting for the right people to notice him and it's going to happen.

Best timeline.

He's medically diagnosed with mental disorders so he probably won't be tried. Not sure how Australia handles troublemakers like him I imagine they just have his ISP snip him off like any other sexual predator. There are ways to remove menaces from societal functions without directly incarcerating them.

Needless to say he's done with gamedev if it happens.

usually they have something that sets them apart, even if it's just aesthetic or level design

usually they have some core mechanic unique to their game. most games that are just re-makes of sonic/mario/metroid/castlevania aren't going to do well because people would like fresh gameplay. why play nameless metroidvania #11487 by jose_gomez2004 if you could just go back and play one of the classics?
