Tbh I always optimized my frost spec for PvP when leveling a mage. You might be a bit less effective against NPCs, but if you intend to fight enemy levelers a lot, then it's a much better choice. And personally I cant stomach leveling without a good chunk of wpvp

Hi /elyg/, (potential) new player here!

I'm trying to decide between playing a gnome mage and a gnome warlock, but I have some questions.

Which is easier to level? Which will I be able to have more fun with in dungeons, since I don't really like PVP all that much? Which one is wanted more right now?

From what I can tell, mage pros/cons:
can conjure food and drink so they don't have to buy food whilst leveling, but they still have to sit around for half a minute between mob pulls to eat and drink
can create portals to get around the world faster, but it requires costly reagents
can grind out mobs and level fast using certain frost skills, but is probably hard to do especially when there are lots of other players around

Whereas for warlock it seems like leveling is easier since you get a pet to tank for you, mana and health is infinite due to life tap and life drain, and the only negative is that you have to grind soul shards (although is that mandatory for everything, even just for dungeons you do as you're leveling up? Deadmines etc.). Oh, and you get a free mount apparently, which also sounds good.

What do you guys think? I'm pretty dumb when it comes to vanilla stuff so feel free to call me out on anything wrong, I just want to work out what I want to play/grind forever.

Both are similarily easy to level just in other ways.
Warlocks are more valuable as they're rarer on alliance side, but Mages are always welcome.
As a Warlock you always want to have a few shards ready no matter what you're doing.
As an Alliance Warlock you are more open to ganks because 90% of Horde are undead.
As a Mage you have slightly more downtime and no free mount, but you can easily aoe farm at later levels.
Basically pick whichever you feel like is best for you.

Thats how it works. Why should you get a raiding spot when there are 20 other people who want it? There is a real dislike of people who raid-log, because they clearly dont enjoy the game enough and are the first people to bail. Keep Discord in the background and -socialize- every now and then.

But retail is shit. My philosophy for playing WoW has always been 1. get to level cap 2. get good gear 3. wreck face of people who didn't get good gear in PVP. With retail PVP taking ages to kill anyone since TBC playing WoW lost it's ultimate goal. That's why i'm playing vanilla but with every raiding guild being all buddy-buddy it's a real pain in the ass.
