What makes a "good composition" in this game is not at all set in stone. Every single map and objective are different and different compositions have equal chances of winning if drafted against the enemy well enough.

You can't really go into games thinking shit like "we need dps" or some shit because some games, you might not. It's a judgment call and a test of wisdom of the game to know what's good when and why.

Also varies hugely by skill level, but I've seen just as many successful zero support triple specialist meme teams win as I've seen 1 tank 1 supp 2 ass 1 spec teams win.

Since blizzard is less shit than riot, there isn't an enforced composition. A lot of it is map based, but typically you'll want at least one good source of disruption and one good source of sustain. Beyond that, it depends on what you plan on doing.

For Dota/LoL, not really. League's f2p system is extremely greedy and runes kind of ruin it. Dota was good once upon a time and plays nothing like other mobas, but Valve are probably the most awful game-balancers I've ever seen in my life and they piledrive it even further into its grave every patch. It turns into a different and worse moba every fucking time they update the game.
Smite is okay. It's got a cool option where you can get every hero forever for a flat fee, $30 or something. Problem is the heroes are extremely fucking samey and if you've played one in a class, you've played 90% of them in that class. Especially hunters (autoattack DPS).
Awesomenauts is 2D and controls like a sidescrolling shooter. Surprisingly good for what it is, plays a bit like this HotS if it didn't have map objectives but the maps were smaller to compensate. Went free to play recently, and has a similar thing that Smite does with "buy once, get all characters". Does have an item system, but they're mostly character-specific so they function like talents.
Dawngate was fucking amazing and played with a lot of ideas that most mobas take for granted. Most notable ones being that you could choose your main income source at the start of the game, stats were more steamlined to be universal among heroes while still balanced, and it had Starcraft-style resource denial where you could straight-up kill workers that farmed passive gold for your team. Jungle was also gigantic, map was 2-lane (but huge) with a boss in the middle, and the core/nexus/ancient was actually a giant boss monster that fought back.

DotA is/was about fighting using a bunch of crazy shit which is often most useful at specific points. Characters reach certain power spikes and then proceed to dominate. This is generally caused by gaining enough levels or buying the right items to enable whatever it is you're planning to do.

In the past this was mostly done by controlling regions of the map to maintain your team's resources or invading the enemy's to deny them theirs, ultimately with the goal of reaching your team's optimal timing and killing the enemy's ancient before they destroy yours. Now teamfighting gives enough gold to do this without farming.

I can't recommend it too strongly after 7.00, but even if you dislike it I would argue that getting some level of familiarity with the father of all mobas (AoS being the grandfather) will improve your understanding of hots.

2. You're not wrong but there's a depth to HotS that is legitimately ignored by most dotards and lolbabs. And for better or worse, the devs of both have seen it and are trying to appropriate elements of HotS into their games now too. So far it's been for the worst though as seen with shrines and dota talents.

Although simple, one real strength of hots is that it is fundamentally impossible that it will EVER fall into the memepush/heavy rat dota dynamic that initially drove Icefrog insane. Ricing is also not a real threat to worry about. 4 protect 1 is there, but it's really niche and isn't all powerful.

Atos was in the shit tier for a long time but it's pretty good now.

In 7.00 its active was changed from a 4s 60% slow to a 2s root (and this was the same patch that root got buffed to disable movement abilities)

Then in 7.06 its recipe was changed to use 2 bracers, so instead of the shittiest buildup imaginable it has a pretty good one.

Gravitron is trash. Anybody with mobility can just leave it. Pick the push ult and use it to to trap somebody in choke points or to split their team up (Kinda like Horrify).

Besides that her point and click shields are good for supporting high mobility heroes or anybody else your healer "misses". Bomb build does great damage from a safe distance and brings poke, and Feel the Heat does great damage against hard melee. She's pretty well rounded and I'd say she fits into most comps.

Why the heck is Genji allowed to exist the way he is right now?
If you want to fight Genji it's always on his terms, he is never in a position where he isn't safe. He has 3 shots of dodge combined with invincibility that deals tons of damage back to you, (practically) attack while moving, 2 flashes and a 3rd if he takes x-strike. So it's hard to pin him down and then even if you do he will live unless you immediately vaporize him with your whole team. His HP really isn't even that low, you'd expect with all those crazy defense advantages that he'd be like Murky level health but it's not like one stray attack is going to take him out of the fight.

They have less healthy dudes like Lunara and Raynor running around without a single defensive ability until level 13 or whatever. And they're infinitely less mobile and don't have a single option once you get close to them. They might out damage him a little bit, but not enough for how unsafe their damage is.

I wouldn't even say malthael was "op on release", he was certainly very strong but his 'engagement time' was always 10+ seconds. He has no burst damage. The armor was a bit ridiculous though and he thrived off of unforced errors.

You know I always thought Elder Titan was garbage in Dota because he doesn't have a place anywhere, items don't do much for him, and fights are so few and far between. But in HotS where you're constantly fighting and there are dozens of minions flying around he would be a super good character.

Keep in mind he has a massive range sleep (5 sec duration) every 10 seconds. He reduces enemy magic/physical armor to 0 as long as he or his spirit is nearby. Every time his spirit hits a minion he gains 15 damage and 60(160 talented) damage for each hero. And his ultimate is a screen length fissure that deals 50% of an opponent's life, sucks them in towards the center, and then has a 50% slow for 5 seconds during which they can't normal attack at all.

Many of the teamfight heroes, but I would say the absolute worst would be Undying or Axe. Mostly Undying since hots is all about teamfights in lanes and he's the literal god tasteless of teamfighting with a bunch of creeps nearby.

Medivh is pretty much what Monkey King support was picked for but better. Huge vision advantage for free. Although while medivh is a better at getting vision he'd be a lot worse at ganking since he doesn't have MK's slow and stun.

Artanis in Dota would also be crazy if he could bring Amateur Opponent with him. Buy a bfury and just oneshot jungle camps all day, then start oneshotting towers.

I think he has way too much utility for them to actually buff him. Spells are so much more valuable than anything in this game that his silence is almost as good as a permanent stun. But I also think that putting 100% of his strength on pro-biotic kill switch makes him incredibly clunky to play and the non-healing payoff is too low for how complex it is to make things work. Especially when you start getting into talents and you can't flip the switch until you land your pustile on the butcher to blind him or until your armor's effect has run its course.

Medivh would tear shit up since you can throw out his nuke forever as long as it harasses the enemy. Most of the characters have more powerful abilities but on longer cooldowns so 2 seconds of invincibility every 5 would be absolutely busted. And vision is the single most important thing so an invincible character that gets permanent flying vision over trees at a massive range or with truesight would probably be the most broken thing ever even if his other abilities weren't already off the wall.

The global presence would be his strongpoint, which would make him an ideal 5 - and you don't need to farm on a 5. The passive gold and bonus from helping during teamfights would finance him well enough. He would also be the only support who could tunnel to a vital ward spot, place it, and tp home. The only thing that would fuck him over is global ults like Spectre and Zeus.

Medivh meanwhile doesn't need any fucking items. It doesn't matter if he was stuck with Bad-siren song or polybomb and couldn't turn into a bird, protect and gate alone would make him broken.

Auriel is absurd on Infernal Shrines you will need Ray CDR and Max Hope Quest to even try to hold all the hope a Guldan, Kael, Valla or even a Slyvanas can generate on that map

Plus the tight corners make for easy stuns, potentially stunning like 3 people, and CDR reductions procs on her swipes that will generate a 2.5 sec aoe blind almost constantly. Then you have Aegis which in that tiny space is a huge problem and you can drop a full fat dick heal on your aegis target the moment they come out.

With any kind of strong front line and battery she is an absolute monster on that map. Couple her with a CDR condemn Johanna and nobody can even stay near you.
