>>

tac sense on a tank? you are better off stacking dodge and armor since the enemy always prioritises those with the lowest defense
>>

They also like to shoot guys who are closer up.
>>
>>183108578

Do they prioritise lowest defense or highest chance to hit? Since they're different. Can the AI see its hit chance if it moves a few tiles closer, for example?

Jake said we'd need to maintain a lot more troops now due to the fatigue system, so how does everyone plan on organizing them?

I think I'll be grouping my soldiers up into half-squads of 3~4 men with complementary abilities, maybe even different tactics. The faction heroes (and sparks) could be in a reserve rotation to fill gaps or complement teams.
>>
>>183109452

Just do what I normally do

>Gatecrasher gives 4 promoted soldiers
>Use 2 or 3 of those for the next mission, bring 1 or 2 rookies
>Do this until I have a solid base of soldiers that can rotate in and out with everybody being around the same rank and not having to worry about my "a-team" being out of action since there won't be an A-team
>>
Vipers need a cuter curl up animation.
>>
>>183109452
I hope they give you more starting soldiers to compensate
>>
>>183109452
It depends on how heavy fatigue is. How many missions can we get through with it.

If it's like 3 before they are totally stressed then switch out half of the team on mission 2 and then the other half after mission 3 with swing spots for the faction heroes.

I imagine it won't be that bad so long as they aren't wounded so you can probably get 10+ missions out of them if you don't let them get harmed or panic.

66KB, 680x1161px
How do we solve the viperfag problem?
>>
>>183109452
I wonder if Solace is going to be altered so that is lessens the fatigue damage taken on missions. It would make Psi-Ops even more required for everything,
>>
>>183110124
it makes that Will PCS more useful, I guess
>>
>>183109452
I'd probably adapt pretty easily since between LW2's infiltration and ABA2 making injuries a lot more frequent I'm already used to using several squads and having quite a few reservists.

Early game will be a bit of a pain with the need to shuffle the few vets that I have but once I got a decently sized force it wouldn't be much of an issue.
>>
>>183110006
are you some kinda vegetarian fag? get the fuck outta here
>>
>>183109850
They already showed that after one mission it went from full to almost empty. This would vary depending on soldier will (yay, an early game use for all those will chips). But that the bar would fill back up in only a few days. So I expect that it won't be a factor in the early game that much, but later on when you have missions literally back to back and can't wait days, it is going to start being a problem.

So I will probably have at least 4 of each class and just shuffle them in as need be, with Hero classes and Sparks filling in various roles when I can. Sparks will be nice since they don't get tired at all and I just have to worry about their repair time instead.
>>
>>183110124

I'd rather something like that for Medic specialists, imo. I never spec them medic since combat protocol, OP overwatches and such are just too good. Damage mitigation is easier to attain and less of a pain in the dick than damage healing.
>>
>>183110309
That would be nice, something like Field Medic, but for Fatigue. Really the major issue will just be will. It's certainly going to make me reconsider soldiers with bad Will on my NCE runs. Higher will means less need for soldier switching and if you are in the early game will PCS chips are always piling up and sometimes soldiers just don't need anything else. I hope there are also other means to raise will. Like how Covert Actions can give you movement or health as well as a free promotion. That is also crazy.
>>
>>183110995

It may be worth intentionally near-suiciding soldiers to make them Shaken. Curing Shaken also increases will, I believe. Not sure by how much, though.

HERESY
>>
>>183111120
By like 20 points. It is certainly enough to justify it though I would imagine even someone with a full bar would go to zero during the middle of the mission. So in order to cure shaken, you are risking getting a negative quirk on that soldier and having to cure it.

>>
>>183111293
that sounds like a reasonable tradeoff, if youre doing so intentionally

its going to be a major bitch in the early game where injuries are practically guaranteed and you wont have a hospital to cure potential negative traits
>>
>>183111563
Yeah, Shaken soldiers might get dismissed in the early game if it's too much of a problem to try to use them, or at the very least not used for a bit.

I bet that Covert Actions might be used to cure them too.

I do as simple as I can think just so I can learn, more like this:

I move two together, shotgun dude flanking, sniper in long range mostly in the back where Aliens can't hit him or in the Top Floor other two stick together just in case there is a emergency one as smoke another as medpack, shotgun dude as always a medpack also.

More or less like in the screenshot
>>

Suppression does jack shit to lancers. They'll just run through it and a single overwatch shot will not be enough to kill them.

Anyone ever notice that the pod order for legendary gate crasher is always the same?
First you hit the three trooper pod.
Then you hit the trooper and sectoid pod
If you kll the trooper without killing the secotid, the sectoid retreats.
Then it is the two trooper and Captain pod
Every single time.

Pod anchoring was a mistake.

Basically, you need at least three soldiers in a group to be really effective. So it's only after you've gotten the squad size upgrades that you have any sort of tactical flexibility.

In the example you gave, I would have had them stack up behind the door, and all move onto the building on the same turn. That way, if there were any aliens inside, I'd be able to kill at least one or two of them before they'd get a chance to retalliate.

>>183120634
This, especially since Jake's said that it's extremely hard to get more than one of each hero unit at a time. This leads me to think that putting them all in one team might actually be a bad idea because you'd get less usage out of them individually.
>>
>Ultralight vests
I think I just found a new favorite item
>>
>>183120634
That's not really a good reasoning, even if it's correct. Ranger shouldn't be something you settle for because everyone else is out. It should have something it does on it's own that is very good.

It does still have this with Rapid Fire shotgun crits, but that is in the late game. Shotgun is still one of the highest damage in the game and Ranger is the only one with it. So I don't doubt they will still be a power house. But their niche as a spotter for my Sniper is pretty much gone now and their sword spec is probably still going to be shit. I just hope that they get something in return rather then just being number 2.

>>
>>183121810
I don't think XCOM2 is outdated
the game could totes have like an expansion for post-story story
Among other things
There are still quite a few UI gripes that need fixing, as well as some bugs and load times, and in that time they can extend the life of the game with meaningful content
>>
>>183121947
Considering that WOTC was going to be XCOM 3 before they decided to make it a concurrent expansion I'm pretty sure this is XCOM2's last extra content release.
>>
>>183121593
As a pure damage class sure, but Ranger had other things to define it that are all but gone now. The only other thing they have is Shadowstep to fuck overwatch. I'm not saying I won't use them anymore, but you can't say from a design standpoint that the hero classes aren't kind of stepping on it's toes.

One thing I am looking forward to though is Ranger run and gun, destroying something, then Templar teleport and put up his shield to counter any damage. Templar will make Ranger rushing in the safest thing imaginable. At least until he gets Untouchable.

Using the bond system to fill effect, plan on having each squad field 2-3 pairs of battle buddies. Have different buddy combos for different missions, like 2 grenadiers for non-lost missions, or a skirmisher+sharpshooter combo if I'm expecting a chosen who has the 3+ damage instances weakness

Not very balanced.

nearly through my first successful xcom2 campaign all I have to do is the advent tower mission and whatever is after it, i'd like to offer up my take of xcom 2 vs xcom eu so if anyone can tell me what I've got wrong I'd love to hear it

Seems like the XCOM 2 devs were trying to solve the wrong problems with XCOM EU. The absolute biggest problem the game had was the early game vs late game difficulty and XCOM 2 just seems even worse at that. Concealment becomes monstrous with high ranked soldiers, every class gets strong abilities as they rank up, all the gear from the proving ground is useful, etc but there's still very few things you can do early game. Without run and gun out of the box the only special thing rangers have is some scouting and a shotgun, sharpshooters have to survive until sergeant to get a high impact ability, hell the only good squaddie is the grenadier.

I'm glad they addressed boring play/long mission playtimes with mission timers. I'm glad that every class feels notably stronger as it makes it's journey to colonel. But man the early game is so much harder and the late game is so much easier.
>>
>>183147401

yes
>>
>>183147401
In 2 I legitimately get to a point where I try to activate as many pods as I can just to make the mission harder
You could sorta get away with that in 1 as well, but you had nowhere near as many abilities to work with it
>>
>>183147401

I think that's the general consensus for XCOM 2's difficulty. The amount of damage abilities do, the importance of AOE, how effective cover is all directs you to bringing as many grenadiers and psionics as you can. Really no point in bringing a ranger, or a specialist, or a sniper when they can only kill 1 or 2 enemies per turn, and the others being able to kill multiple per turn, with some soldiers not having used any actions. Couple that with how the injury system works, it makes killing enemies the instant you activate them extremely important, else you potentially suffer medbay time.

I hope the Alpha Strike second wave option helps with this, but I doubt it. It will double alien and xcom HP but I don't see how it'll do much with the tactical choices if AOE remains king and injury time is still retarded.

dfa+stock on a sniper means you are deleting anything they can see every turn. Slap a scope and auto-loader and it becomes nonestop. Talk on the street is this is a prime candidate for the Lumpster to nerf in 1.6
>>
>>183154036
Can't use stock with snipers, it takes an action
>>
>>183154153
First kill without the stock bonuses. Every kill after that with the stock bonuses.
>>
>>183154153
that is what death from above is for. You set up the stock the turn before, then kill something the next turn and get a refund on your action so that you can use the stock for the next turn and keep repeating. Besides, you can't use a stock before shooting on the same turn.
>>
>>183154153

>turn 1, move to elevated ground
>turn 2, steady weapon
>turn 3, kill something, steady weapon
>turn 4, kill something, steady weapon
>turn 5...

And so on.

DFA is also broken in the basic Long War 2 soldier classes mod. You take snap shot with it, you have effectively infinite actions as long as you can score a kill, since Snap Shot replaces the basic fire ability and only costs 1 action, meaning if you have the free reload item, you can just pop off forever.

Apparently so, yeah. I just checked upthread and it seems there's a 1/3 chance your campaign will be unwinnable right from the start. That alone means I'm not going to bother with it again. >>183177483
Yeah, I was away to say, all Jake said was that for a section of hardcore players the base game was the training wheels until LW came out, but for the majority of their players they got the balance just about right (You just have to look at the shockingly low number of people who actually finished the game to see that)

Where these the most pointless enemies ever? Seriously though they had no role gameplay wise. They had no unique abilities and were essentially just reskinned sectoids. They completely disappear from the game after you raid the alien base and are never mentioned again.
>>
>>183177806
All you had to do in Xcom was literally move slowly together and u would really never die. Even on ironman mode and the hardest difficulty. Xcom 2 at least changes it where there is a time limit. The Long War mode actually changed the game where the enemies would have a fuck ton of health so you were almost certain that you would not be able to kill them in that turn. It changed the entire dynamic.

>All you had to do in Xcom was literally move slowly together and u would really never die. Even on ironman mode and the hardest difficulty.
But that's wrong. So there's not much to discuss here. The percentage of players who find ironman impossible "easy" approaches 1 to .1% of the player base. Factually, XCOM is a difficult game.

Well that's not really a standalone experience. Nor would describing LW as a harder difficulty be accurate. No I am not, the cover system is garbage in this game. Even when an enemy is far away, as long as he is somehow a tile near your side he gets a bonus. Sometimes the game will not even let you shoot enemies that are completely in your sight. LOS system retarded as when an enemy is literally moving in front of your guy cannot see him and will not react to it. Then there are the retarded animation bugs where you will shoot through walls and shit and someone kill the enemy. This game is a buggy mess.

I believe people could play LW for the first time and learn through trial and error because literally, my friend did that. He obv played the earlier x-coms and thought he was hot shit so he just went directly to LW. Got his asskicked, got humble, and played till he eventually won. Interesting, but neither is enough to build an entire class around. It looks like versions of these are being worked into Templar and Reaper, respectively. (Besides, building cover is redundant with units that are mobile cover.)

I think that's the wrong way to perceive it. I think that rather than making moves where failure is "impossible," you take calculated risks. Managing risk is a big part of the game.

Sounds nice except that this usually is not possible. In the vanilla game you will have to roll the dice at times, and in the LWs you need to roll dice even more often.

If you are in a situation where you *must* roll the dice, then it's the result of a previous bad decision.

When you end up in such a situation, generally the best answer is to retreat, not double down on your risk.
>>
>>183204536
>If you are in a situation where you *must* roll the dice, then it's the result of a previous bad decision.
No this simply isn't true. It takes time before you have enough guaranteed damage and high enough aim for guaranteed shots. Not too mention that retreat is not an option in X2. Retreating itself isn't a sure thing, and just one tool you have.
The game is about risk management and still has rng you must contend with. Victory is never guaranteed on the higher difficulties.
>>
Am I the only one around here who actually likes taking risks? They add some fun in the game... whenever I try and go for a no-risks run I usually find it gets sluggish and boring very quickly.

I don't think Xcom is the series for you my friend.
What sets it apart from other TBS/tactics style games is the injection of more pseudo randomness and heavier consequences of those seemingly random events.
It's a game that appeals to gamblers more than strategists.

>>183205131
>I don't think Xcom is the series for you my friend.
I think there's a misunderstanding here.

I'm speaking philosophically here. Any commander worth their salt will make a lot of moves that are wrong - wrong from *a certain point of view*, that is.

A good commander is one who knows exactly how and why each decision he makes is wrong. He can thus judge if it's actually worth it or not. For those without this enlightenment, taking risks is but a foolish gamble that merely *might not* destroy everything they have worked for.

I'm talking about actually completing the mission vs. a tactical retreat. You can't tactically retreat in X2, and a lot of missions have fixed evacs.
XCOM 1 you can back off from a bad situation and try to come at it from better footing.

>I'm talking about actually completing the mission vs. a tactical retreat.
If you can't complete the missing without taking big risks, then you should really be asking yourself if the mission is really worth it.

Also, in a lot timed missions you can abuse concealment to get really close to the objective, and once that's done the time pressure's gone.

All right, enlighten me how you get through X2 on legendary by skipping risky missions, and how you sneak close to objectives with timers even though all the pods are anchored to your squad.

I take squads of all rookies for normal missions up until about march 15-20th. After which point I rotate in a couple specs in order to get some LCPLs going for the terror mission.

However I do not promote assault or infantry specs into their classes until the end of the month because I start in France, and the first two countries I get are Russia and UK. Russia's country bonus gives +1HP to all new infy/assault, and that's too much lategame potential to give up for early CCS.

Just got my first council mission, it's a target escort from the satellite observatory. I've heard Long Dong changes how these maps work. What kind of squad should I bring? Doesn't matter. Put medkits on people so that when they get poisoned they can keep on chugging.
Just having them in your inventory stops the damage ticks and makes the aim penalty much smaller.
>>
>>183228697
Camping is not a bad strategy, just watch for acid spit. As far as how many medkits, I'd bring one on each important unit. It won't remove the aim/mob penalty but will prevent damage.

So I'm only kinda okay/good at XCOM 2. Should I get any of the DLC or are they really as bad as Steam reviews make them out to be? Shens' Last Gift looks okay I guess, but Alien Hunters seems... I dunno, maybe it's something you get used to but they seem to just be an unfun element added to the game.

As someone who is just okay at XCOM 2, should I avoid Alien Hunters? The idea of an enemy that is a massive health sponge and gets a move for every action one of your soldiers takes seems like a nightmare more than a fun encounter. But I could be wrong and all of the Steam reviews are just whiners.

It makes me wonder how Alien Hunters will mesh with War of the Chosen, since both Chosen and Alien Rulers are meant to kinda just show up on missions out of nowhere, right? I can't imagine encountering both of those things in the same mission, along with swarms of Lost coming at you.
>>
>>183229452
I like it,it adds some fun new weapons a new mission/map if you leave the story elements on and makes the game decently harder though and you most likely will get fucked over by one the bosses unless you superior repeater cheese it.

if your a casual i would say no, if you play the game a lot or actually want to one day beat it on the hardest difficulty or play longway I'll say yes

That's not allowed.

They can't show up in the same mission(mods will fix it)
Alien Rulers in the expansion have their own bases, so you need to actually go and activate the Berserker Queen and the Archon King too.

No
Was curious about the mission 1 hour into playing (5-7 hours total, up to this point)
sent my "A-Team" with all those fancy tier1 AR's and shit in
"hey all these 2-3 (veteranbabby difficulty) are piss easy"
"omg its dr vahlen from EW"
"wtf is Ruler reaction"

I'm over missing these 99% shots, yet ADVENT's cruising along with their 10% hit, 6% crit shots like it's no one's business. What the fuck is this shit? I'm almost certain that there's some under the table calculations going on because this is far too frequent. Every mission, every turn.
>>
>>183230576
2-3 hp* sneks i meant
>>
>>183230252
>like an idiot?

It's unintuitive. I saw an "enable Alien Hunter content?" pop-up in the Avenger in one of the WOTC videos, so the devs do recognize this and are going to allow you to directly disable the DLCs without uninstalling.

X2 specifically cheats *in the players favor*. You're retarded and suffering from confirmation bias of only remembering the shitty misses/hits. Get over it and accept that X2 is actually cheating for you, you just take shitty shots and let ADVENT get good ones.

You sound shit, Bradford rapes all the babi snakes, and with the frost grenade and that crossbow the viper gets fucked and it runs off pretty quick, you must of grouped up all under one cover like an idiot
>>
>>183230987
>X2 specifically cheats *in the players favor*.
I already know about the "bonus to hit" mechanic that's enabled for lower difficulties, I already know the game cheats in the player's favor, thus there's nothing to accept.
>You're retarded and suffering from confirmation bias of only remembering the shitty misses/hits.
Nah. It's very frequent and almost questionable at times.
>you just take shitty shots and let ADVENT get good ones.
I don't understand how 99% shot is a shitty shot, but alright. As for letting ADVENT get good ones I don't see how putting a soldier in full cover + smoke turns into him getting crit-ed for all his hitpoints as if the cover never existed.
>graze band
Already turned that shit off so they're not grazing, they're definitely landing these shots.
>it's an RNG game
Yep, but when the RNG is too frequent on their side there's something up.
>>
>>183230987
I would actually say it's a numbers game. The reason ADVENT hits more often than the player is because if they are alive to shoot then they will get off more shots over the course of a mission than XCOM.

It's just numbers. If there are 12 of them and they each get off at least one shot then odds are you are getting hit by a 10% shot. If they all fire twice then you are almost certainly getting your ass reamed by a low percenter that will crit because of how rolls work.

XCOM is stacked against the player just because of the numbers and the fact each XCOM soldier is more valuable than each ADVENT trooper.

Nothing to do with the RNG.

>I don't understand how 99% shot is a shitty shot, but alright. As for letting ADVENT get good ones I don't see how putting a soldier in full cover + smoke turns into him getting crit-ed for all his hitpoints as if the cover never existed.
Advent shouldn't even be getting shots off at you if you were good, why chuck a smoke grenade when you get throw a nade and get them out of cover
>Already turned that shit off so they're not grazing, they're definitely landing these shots.
graze is only slightly annoying however, grenades and specialist drones are a good way for guaranteed damage, sometimes 3/4 damage 100% is better then a 5/6 70%
>Yep, but when the RNG is too frequent on their side there's something up.
Just go watch Beaglerush then he plays it on legendary ironman and gets though it easy, rng is not much of a factor when end game I might only miss 1 shot out of 30

stop using low rankers and letting advent even shoot you in vanilla you should be pod wiping in one turn

That could be a fun mod. RNG Squad composition.

Every time you go on a mission a random selection of available soldiers will be used with random equipment selections.

>this was 10 hours in
Was used to EW vanilla where a bunch of grenades and balling up was the way to go because splitting off fucks you
I didnt even lose 1 health on any of my 4 squad members until that fucking thing showed up
>>
>>183233147
as an addendum
my 1 gripe with XCOM2 is how hard it can screw you over and I daresay it's unbeatable going in blind
you get fucked and you do better on subsequent playthroughs

game grows on you sure, and that arguably makes it an acquired taste, but EW was much more doable without aforementioned knowledge

Blind XCOM2 playthroughs just make you look stupid
>>
>>183233147
>4 squad members
>he did Alien Hunters with 4 squad members
Point at him. Point at him and laugh.
>>
>>183233147
10 hours in only 4 squad members didn't bring the crossbow or the frost grenade, the game literally hands them to you and says here their powerful and useful don't lost them

Maybe it's telling you to bring them? Also don't group up so much know mechs will fucking destroy you especially on buildings now, I got the viper to fuck off first go blind with it only killing one guy
>>
>>183233463
oh no I just downloaded the fucking game
better scan and not see what happens

You mean you fucking read about the game before you even tried to play it?
To be fair the boss only has like <15 health with that few members and tech so it's definitely doable, just wish i saved my tomahawk and didnt charge brad in, he seemed to be doing a fine job baiting and killing for the snipers
Those were my first fuckin vipers too
Apparently if you do the DLC before they have a chance to show up it'll be the first time you encounter blind

>Apparently if you do the DLC before they have a chance to show up it'll be the first time you encounter blind
No if you leave the story mission on you can get the weapons and never encounter a ruler, if you turn it off they "randomly" appear
>>
>>183233738
>Maybe it's telling you to bring them?

The game LITERALLY tells you to bring them when you get into the squad selection screen.

They have an amusingly low health I think by virtue of the fact that "they aren't supposed to show up so we super weakened them for you"
>>
>>183231902
Humans are really bad at dealing with randomness.

Hell, there is some thought that it is an evolutionary survival trait - jumping every time the long grass moves with the wind saves you the one time there is actually a tiger hiding in it. We're predisposed to find patterns where there are none because sometimes that paranoia saves our lives.

Downside is that you get people who can't accept when something is being random within the given odds.
>>

What do you mean? The normal ones with the green laser guns show up anyway, and those little weak ones never show up outside of the lair mission. Someone should mod them into a pod with like 6 of them
>>
>>183234547
well I did a super duper early visit
and a super moderate (t2 visit)
the health for super early is what? 2-3 health
and the t2 was around 4-6
still in 1-shotting range for most guns but the super early ones are terrifying if you go in blind because you encounter for the very first time high stress mechanics like "graze" and "snekky squeeze" and how missing that fucking king means bradford go sleepy
>>
>>183234787
>>183234547
what i mean to say is if you do it fast enough and you're new to the game
You can run into the snakes so early that Doctor tygan can do his "blah blah blah thin man" narrative and suddenly you're like "what the fuck is graze" and "good god they can pull and unconscious"
>>
>>183234787
>>183235034
If you haven't played any xcom game before and you go into the rulers then yeah I can see the person getting destroyed, but I guess that's what happens to all new players to xcom anyway, I remember losing in EU because I did some stupid stuff. If you've played the game then it's easily manageable, and the dlc did release a month or two after release so anyone who brought it on launch or a bit after already knew.
>>
>>183235447

>>
>>183236014
The objective timers aren't even that hard, there's bad design on the evac point moving if it gets blown up and once you get the objective you can kill everything at your own pace. You can even easily mod it out.
>>
>>183236014
You can evac out of mission where the objective is data retrieval or to destroy an advent data thing and finish the mission.

I use the mod but the reality is if I don't kill everything I see ASAP one tends to activate more pods at inopportune moments, so it's much less low risk to be smart with grenades and keeping the ranger stealthed

Beat X2 the first time through with it. Every class has their place on the team though I replaced the grenadier with Psi for the final mission. In hindsight, would not recommend doing that.
