I don't really like to rely on having the defending champion show up as a set piece. I like it when people show up because they want to show up best.
Nothing really stopping us from running events/rulesets again without prizes, we could run a prizeless event every week if that interests people. I initially started doing events as a way to get people to drop by the server more often so that's really no issue for me.

As far as new events with big(ish) prizes, youtube videos, streams they'll continue to be sporadic. Art assets for the video, actually editing the video, coming up with a concept, and getting prizes to match the concept, these all take time.

I mainly mapped for Doom and Quake, but I did one or two TF2 maps some time ago, and playing on the party van server made me want to go back to it.
One of the old maps I made was a koth that took place on the side of a volcano, so I'm thinking of updating it using the Mayann object pack. I don't have the old version with me right now, but gimme a minute and I'll try to sketch it from memory.

Best way to balance your map is to have a couple of archetypes play around with the map. Mainly you want a jumper to see what he can get on top of, a gamer to see if he can break your shit and finagle himself out of bounds, and then you want a couple of people who play together to fight against.

Surprisingly, it's a wet dream for just about every class. Spies and pyros have a ball thanks to the flanks and narrow spaces. Demos and soldiers love the verticality and narrow spaces. Heavy rolls with the cart and the close ranges. Sniper has his one safe-ish sightline, and more aggressive sightlines where he's left vulnerable. Scouts can jump all the gaps and use the flanks. Engi has one good (predictable) defensive spot and a lot of ninjaneer potential. Medic seems to be the odd one out cause he's vulnerable, but still a great benefit with his healing.

I don't know if I made it clear, but those gray cylinders are supposed to be rock prefabs.
I made some modifications to the map with snipers in mind: more rock formations to break the lines of sight, both in front of the point and on the upper part. I'm not too sure about getting rid of the ramp though, as the second spawn exit leads to it, to avoid spawncamping and make it so any class can choose the path it wants to take. Without it, any class that isn't Scout, Soldier or Demo is restricted to the mid and lower path, at least when coming from spawn. Would it still be balanced without it?

Makes sense. The higher ground is still accessible to all via the midway team house, and I guess I can find another place to put the second spawn exit.
As for the lava, the upper lake is kinda close to the ground, but the bottom one is at the bottom of a ravine, much lower than pictured on the sketch. (Unless you're talking about the deepness of the lava lakes and not their distance from the land, in which case they are both around player size in height)

I'm about to have 100 hours in both demo and soldier and will be fairly close to 1.4 k hours. I'm tired of carrying pubs and getting my shit pushed in by premades. I have never done competitve before ,( I did valves when i had a beta pass and people actually played it), and im looking to explore more of what this game has to offer. What would be a good place for some one who is COMPLETELY new to the competive format go to learn? Are there any class specific things I should know?

if you're completely new you can try to play some games on tf2center
just don't take anything that happens there too seriously, people often throw or shittalk there, but you should be able to get a rough idea of how the game flows and what your objectives are
if you want to play demo or soldier (or any class really) definitely try to learn rollouts, there are a ton of guides on positioning on youtube per class, those should also help
not a big deal if you're new but you should also learn the callouts for every map at some point too
