can I make an arena shooter with Unreal ENgine 4?

That's the only genre you CAN make.

Yep. You need to make a child blueprint and cast to it whenever you GetGameInstance.

I think that'd be the easiest way to do it, but maybe it'd be better to have that data saved to the server until a new game is started. That way even if the player's game crashes, he can still rejoin and get his score back.

What causes so many adult games to be abandonware?
>>
How do you make saves forward-compatible?
>>
What are the advantages of 2D over 3D?
>>
>>182932869
Because you lose all motivation after you jack off.
>>

Same reason anything becomes abandoned: devs getting in over their heads, not seeing any money, and dropping it.

There's also the more insidious problem of a game getting funded and development slowing to a crawl.
>>
>>182932869
Damnit "abandonware" is already a term, and it doesn't mean that.

Abandonware is old games where nobody claims ownership / the companies folded.

>>
>>182932869

Because many devs think that making porn means they won't have to work.

Also everyone thinks your game is basically crap and they will be ashamed of you if they know you personally.

I bet I could make a game full of porn and most of my friends wouldn't care and of those that did, most would only care because they'd want to play it.

They're more likely to judge you for randomly telling them about sex-related things you do than for making the games in the first place. It's just like your friends are happy for you if you're in a relationship and thus probably having sex, but they don't want to know your fantasies in detail.
>>
tripcodes are for wimps. people know when it's me posting because my opinions are always of the same quality.
>>
>>182932473
Are you looking for a concrete answer or my specific opinion? What type of game are we talking about here?

>Competative RPG arena game
Class balance is important and sometimes you need to restrict things in order to provide drawbacks and strengths to the class archtypes.

>Single Player RPG
I prefer a classless system where you select talents, skills, proficiency, and stats separately. Its fair enough if certain magic can only be done with an agility of 40, and wearing heavy armor reduces your agility by 20, and that makes it very unlikely to get an agility of 40 for that magic to be used while wearing heavy armor. However I like single player RPG's that take the Elder Scrolls / Fable type character building.

If you grind the training out there should be nothing restricting you from doing whatever you want. Fuck balance, it literally doesn't matter.

>I see. I will prescribe you some pills. I want you to grind them up and put them in his pizza pocket. Then leave the house unlocked and call us after you've left.

2. I'm not
>>
>>182932473
Depends on how you want to balance the game.

Lets say swords are your base and everything is compared to swords in strength.
If magic is equal to swords in strength, then don't give it drawbacks, but if you want some extra quirkiness then you can make magic statistically better than swords but it has drawbacks like armour inhibiting it.

Don't patent trolls only go after people who they know can actually pay up? i.e NOT about 99% of developers?

I think unless you get lucky an strike digital oil that most indie and hobby developers are safe from patent trolls (at least, as far as I know)
>>
>>182935741
If you're a dev who just makes a lot of small games with low numbers, enough to live on, you're probably not a target. If you're big enough to have a legal team, you're probably ok.

The scenario that you can get caught in is: you make a game (maybe it's your 3rd or 4th, up til now it's all been low sales) without an LLC and it gets unexpectedly successful. Now you are visible from the press coverage, have a bunch of money, and no experience managing it.
>>
>>182935570
>showing the extra remaining shots
I don't think you really have to do that, if the player knows that each mag is 10 shots and there are 3 mags left then he knows he's good on ammo. There's no need for unnecessary info.
But if you really want to have that kind of thing then just go with the good old numbers.
As you've noticed, trying to represent this kind of info with only visual elements may not be the most optimal way.
>>
>>182936037
I don't know much about business structures, what protection does an LLC offer that, say, being a sole proprietor wouldn't?
>>
Is it better to be the art guy or the code guy, assuming you're the one designing the game
>>
>>182936185
Depends on the jurisdiction, but the main feature is separating the company's assets from your own. In the last thread an anon mentioned that in their state, if you are the only member of the LLC, you don't have this protection.
>>
>>182936246
why not both
>>
>>182936246

>>
>>182936281
I'm from Australia - I'm not even sure if "LLC's" are a thing here or what the equivalent is.

So basically, it acts like a "legal shield" so that your personal assets aren't at risk?
>>
>>182936384
Because then I have to learn two skills instead of one
>>
>>182936141
Yeah, like I said in my first post, the mags are too big and they need to either be moved, trimmed, or removed, I've been thinking about going to numbers for this, honestly. It'd certainly make the arm gun's HUD contrast from the Sword's that much more, the sword is gold, shiny, and more ornate with visual gems to keep track of your energy.

On the flip side the arm cannon's HUD is gray, muted, and more industrial, so having a numerical counter for the bullets might be the way to go. But I'm still going to have a meter for keeping track of the charge status.
>>
>>182936246
>>182936393
Post got cut off. Was gonna say, if you can rely on a coder to do exactly what you want, go for art. But coders often want to have some creative control too, especially if it's a collab and you're not hiring them.

Also, design and coding seem more tightly linked than design and art.

I know you don't want to be a meme game. But what you have right now, even if it doesn't fit your vision, is of real value to people and is worth playing.

You should really start building some game structures around it. Have you ever set up missions for yourself, even if not hardcoded, and tried to beat them? Defeat all enemies, move to the end of the level, etc.

Have you considered the marketing path where you give a meme game to streamers and then build what you want on top of it once you have a playerbase?

its all a protoype sandbox area for now but i know exactly how i want to set the levels up and what the general layout of the areas are going to be. i'm hoping to have a level design similar to Rune, severance, or jedi outcast 2. something linear with checkpoints, but a scrap based currency system that incentivises risk taking.
>>
>>182939106
I agree it's possible for him to package something playable soon from the looks of it, but he seems to have an entire game in mind with certain design styles maybe a plot, not sure yet. He could release a meme game now and expand it with a full game with story later, both games would sell. People do want to play this prototype right now though.

>You should really start building some game structures around it. Have you ever set up missions for yourself, even if not hardcoded, and tried to beat them? Defeat all enemies, move to the end of the level, etc.

i've made a few test levels and i've gotten a feeling for how i want the pacing of the engadments to go. i really want to see if i can incoporate more fluid platforming elements (ledge grabs, wall jumping, vaulting,) but that's kind of a tall order for now.

>Have you considered the marketing path where you give a meme game to streamers and then build what you want on top of it once you have a playerbase?

i've decided i'll probably give the streamers that contacted me a sandbox area they can meme around in that's at least tonally consistent with the kind of atmosphere i want. it may also end up being the kickstarter demo. my goal is something that's kind of dry and deadpan, that isn't too self serious. something like machinarium mixed with zeno clash.

You go from battle to battle to shop to battle and so on. Which specific elements you see on a given run is proc gen'd. Do you think just giving the player spells as they level up is a sufficient form of progression? Lets say they'll level up 10 times in a given run, once every 15 minutes or so.

Yeah, I figured much. I just kind of threw in a random object I quickly made with one texture to try it out. Maybe if it was more flatshaded it would work? Hard to say. I think it's neat though that I'm able to throw stuff in quickly and it's fine with it. I'll consider using it if I make another game.

Perhaps more flat shaded objects would look better, I agree. I haven't seen enough to give you a definite answer, maybe play around with some more 3D stuff and see if you can get it to look better.

while you're actually considering gameplay effects...
shouldn't the hammer swings be two types of animations? hits and misses, a hitting swing would get some bounce back to the initial position while a missing hammer swing can continue the swing into a full around-the-world to smoothly get back into position (with the gameplay implication that misses take longer to recover).

according to the rules that the guy stated,
1 boner = 0.8 pees
this doesn't mean 1 pee = 1.2 boners
if you want to do it that way,
1*10 boners = 0.8*10 pees
10 boners = 8 pees
10/8 boners = 8/8 pees
1.25 boners = 1 pee
1 pee = 1.25 boners
2000 pees * 1.25 = 2500 boners

Using Unity. I want to make the character shoot a ray the damages and goes through enemies, but not through walls. My idea is:
1) Use RaycastAll*, with a layerMask to detect only enemies
2) Use Raycast*, with a layerMask to detect only obstacles such as walls
3) Go through the enemies hit by the (1) RaycastAll, and apply the damage only to those whose distance is lower than the distance reached by the (2) Raycast

It should work. My question is: is this bad? I there a better way to do it?

Thanks.

*RaycastAll goes through objects, Raycast stops at the first object it hits.

I'm stuck.

As an art guy I really feel like I could make a gorgeous 2d platformer/metroidvania with all sorts of cool parallax backgrounds and whatnot but at the same time sidescrollers are really weak means of presenting a fictional universe. An adventure/rpg game would be a lot more fitting to what I want to convey but 4-direction 2d games have much weaker aesthetics.

Which direction should I take??

So what's the roadmap once you find out you have the same problems with C++? Unity/Unreal or are you then switching to C/Asm ?
I mean, I like what you have anon, but switching Java for C++ and expecting improvements is retarded, just go the extra mile and start using Unreal or Unity

>>182955276
I was, but garbage collection has pissed me off for the last time.

There's a leak in my collision code that can't actually be fixed without recompiling LibGDX or writing a wrapper around its Bullet3D port. I could've waited for a patch but I just couldn't stand not having structs or stack allocation.

I was always going to rewrite in C-style C++, but the original plan was to do so after release
>>
>>182955571
Yes, a cute animal.
>>
>>182955582
Well the problems I had were that I had no control over my memory and couldn't clear a Bullet objects back to zero to reuse them. An engine would make that worse not better.

It's not for performance reasons, it's for my own sanity, Java is just too restrictive.

I used to enginedev my games because a retard told me that engines were too restrictive when I was 13 and I believed him. He never made any games but had a bit more programming experience than me so I assumed he was right.

regardless of your decision to change from Java to C/C++, sounds like a pooling system is needed here

you keep the bullets in memory (because there's always a need for them) then put them in a disabled state when not used, and just reuse disabled ones when you need a new bullet at the moment

>>
>tfw you don't even know where to begin with creating a game
>>
>>182956053
The game won't run on Macs anymore, not that I put any effort into supporting them before, it was a side effect of using java.

Linux and Windows will continue, as my main dev machine dual-boots Gentoo and Windows 7.

>>182956093
I know, I appreciate the concern.

I tried getting into both Unity and Unreal but I just couldn't stand them, I use only the bare minimum of features which makes a full engine a waste for me. I also find debugging them to be a nightmare, whatever time is saved getting your first builds working is taken right back away from you again during final polish.

>>182956386
The problem is that the object LibGDX exposes in Java is paired with the actual Bullet3D struct in a separate running thread that I didn't write. Any pooling would have to be done internally in Bullet3D, but if I could do that then I could simply clear it to zero and this wouldn't be a problem.

a 5 second loop can work in some parts

or is a 2 minute song better?

what about a 10 min one?

what kind of length of music would you guys request for your game?

>>
>>182958838
As you seem to have figured out, it depends.

If you're going to be in one area for a long time (which is itself probably bad design, but not always) you'll probably want a long ass track. Or perhaps if your game is going to only have 1 or 2 tracks due to limitations... you might want to go ahead and get a long track too.

A 5 second track can do for like, a fucking crafting menu (and having a separate track is just a nice touch). Or if it's a real sparse 5 second track, you could probably get away with that in some places too (think: just a couple drum beats spaced way out)

>>
>>182958314

>>182958838
Depends on the track itself.
An ambiant loop can be rather short without it being annoying.
A dynamic track needs multiple parts and should have variation in it.
I'd probably discuss that with my composer friend before he starts anything, make him play/look at the game so he gets a good idea of it too.

crossdressing is dressing up as a woman (or man), being a flaming lala homo man means you like other men, and being transsexual means you think you are a woman (and usually want to make that mental state a more physical one as well).

the latter two have the same result (a dude is fucking another dude, appearances aside), and the former can apply to either of the latter, but they're not all mutually inclusive.

procedurally generated fighting game

start with a ryu-type character, grappler, and rushdown. fight against a wide variety of fighters who are given random sets of normals and special attacks. use algorythm to determine which normals are most compatible with which specials and supers. can choose 'random' and you will spawn with a different set of attacks. play the game to learn your character. if you like the character, you can save it as a permanent character in the available slot in character select. create your own character with your own normals, specials, supers in creator mode. save character and play online against other player's created/procedurally generated characters. full offline and online play. earn loot boxes for free and more customization options. I just need some good programmers and artists and sound designers to make my dream fighting game become reality. it would be the ultimate fighting game with infinite replay value even while offline so it would never die, ever.

Sorry for shitty post, but I remember seeing in some tutorial, in c# you could use the normal format for an if; else statement:
if (thing) do_this;
else do_that;
But there was also a compacted form. I'm googling it but can't find it, as I don't know the proper term. It looked more like this:
if (thing) [[do_this // do_that]]
(that wasn't the format at all, though)

Could anyone point my in the right direction, please?

dark souls has FANTASTIC stereoscopic for some reason

like the majula rocks in 2 look fucking great

but sometimes the effect doesn't pop out good like when i watched game of thrones

every thing in game of thrones is covered in this drabness

like there's this scene with the white walker army guys and they put this overused snow dust effect that fucking ruined the shot and it didn't pop out at all

the BEST effect i have found through playing random games is ironically league of fucking legends

when the character rumble dies, he explodes in the air but with 3d vision it really looks like hes coming at you due to the perspective

How awful.

I have been having trouble finding a good tutorial series that does more than move a ball around the screen.

Is there a good tutorial series for moving your own models around? I got it rigged up correctly with an external script, but I want to understand how it works.

Like an GetAxis of "Horizontal" and "Vertical" get's the current x and y or reads the arrow keys? Not sure how that works.

Also need to know how to increase the z axis on spacebar press.
>>
>>182968940
Do you think I should try giving low poly graphics a go, or replacing them with isometric pixel art would work?
>>
>>182969270
It will be much faster and easier to use 3D models, isometric pixel art would be a huge pain and would take forever.
>>
>>182969220
pretty sure GetAxis of "Horizontal" and "Vertical"

refers to the axis of the player's settings

so if you have your 360 plugged in, and hit up on the up stick it goes up

and if you hit up arrow key it works too

and if you hit "W" it should move up too
>>
What's the big difference between rigidbody MovePosition and AddForce?
>>
>>182969410
360 controller*
>>182969270
i played around with a nox type clone myself

you should do PIXEL art first because you will still NEED pixel art for icons for swords and axes and shit

3d is interesting and probably more initial work

but once you got that model rigged and set up it becomes easier you can re use the skeletons and shit
>>
>>182969437
Move will force the position at once, addforce will add to the velocity to reach said position.
>>
>>182951365

How is this a proper Vector3? It looks good in debug but I'm not seeing how to add the z-axis..

Vector3 movement = transform.forward * m_MovementInputValue * m_Speed * Time.deltaTime;

This is for forward and backward only, not turning. Both are handled similar, but how does it know the axis?

m_movementInputValue is a GetAxis("Vertical"), but it's only the value. How does it know that I want it vertical?

How could I input some z-axis on there? I tried to treat that assignment into the first value with parenthesis followed by 0.0f, 1.0f and got compiler errors.

Game: Nox Striga
Dev: Mez
Tools: Unity, Blender, Paint.Net, Gimp
Web: mezdritch (twitter/tumblr)
Progress:
+ The dialogue system now works properly. It's possible to have a conversation with multiple branch/choices.
+ Some improvement done to some areas, including a bunch of new models/texture. Things are slowly fleshing up.
+ A few new avatars, sprites (visual effects like buffs) and the like.
+ Started the UI for the main character menu (especially the inventory of scrolls, cards, etc. so that we can start receiving things through dialogues and encounters.)
+ Fixed some encounter-stacking problem. Now the player and his opponent lock into place properly during an encounter.
- Need to revise a few quickly made UI at the start of the project to centralize everything.
- Most models are static, some need animations.
- Tried to make a new enemy, looked like a roadkill. Need to get better with blender.
>>
>>182971879
I think it's :

((x^2+x)y)/2

with x being the number of times you want to add the number and y being the number itself
((5^2+5)10)/2 = (30x10)/2 = 150

I put in some basic functionality for item individuality - originally 'items' were just references to a item database and had no real individuality on their own. In the webm I rename the cube ( Without a UI, just a button press rn ) but this infrastructure could be used for other things in the future as well, such as weapon durability, item uses and equipment enchants!

Don't simply extrude from the model when you make arms/legs, it looks unnatural and it will not deform well at the knees/elbows (unless you do tentacles).
Set your shading in Blender to smooth, it'll get rid of the blocky aspect of your mesh, you can then add some edge splits to mark a clear difference.
Also you could bake some noise to a normal map to add some depth to the model.

it really looks like roadkill

Alrighty I need some feedback

I added an energy shield that allows the player to block all projectile attacks. Right now it's draining a fixed amount of energy like any other part. So a very efficient mech with a powerful generator can sustain it indefinitely, while a powerhungry mech runs dry in less than 2 seconds.
Now I got the following options:
1. Leave everything as it is, op shit is where the fun is
2. Just make sure it's not possible to use it indefinitely
3. Change the shield to only block x% of damage
4. It should have a fixed timer so everyone can use it equally

What do you lads think?

Its all about contrast and variety
Not every weapon needs to be a 100 year old war mace from the war with the dragons. Sometimes just use item descriptions to describe the period the weapon was made in, or the person wielding it.

>Three Star Maces like this were used by the Holy Empire in their war against the Orc. They were designed so as to pierce through Orcish armor while remaining inexpensive to manufacture. Tend to be brittle without delicate care.

>>

Video games are expensive to make. You can make a bizarre painting or song in a few hours or days but a bizarre game needs weeks at a minimum, and if you can do the necessary art yourself it might be better to just make an animated short and not worry about bugs. Games are naturally commercial products just because they require such a huge investment to create.

That said, I seem to remember the guy who made English Country Tune, whose pseudonym I've forgotten, had some really weird stuff on his website. The only one I played was set in a night club with headache-inducing visuals. Very much an interactive set-piece more than a game, though.

If you're looking for something more polished, Hotline Miami has a very interesting approach to storytelling and is careful not to let it get in the way of gameplay. The sequel gets even weirder, and has tighter controls, although its level design is pretty hit-or-miss.

What do you want to do with it? The outputs is very limited. The best you can make is small robots or toys but don't think you can use it as a mini gaming platform or even worst a powerful one.

You would be better off by getting a raspberrypie, you have WIFI, HDMI, a bigger cpu and ram. Way more uses and not much expensive.

Where do I put that array? Do I make it into a player attribute like player.bulletlist? Do I put it wherever and pass into the shoot method like player.shoot(bulletlist)? Or do I just make it a global and fuck it?

The batshit insane vidya field was bigger before indie as we know it today became a thing. Mostly because the point-and-click adventure genre was still alive and developers didn't have to adhere to social norms as much due to the lack of game "journalists" that push retarded agendas.

>>182976756
Players will naturally try new shit. If they're really determined to only use the first tool you give them, they aren't gonna change. Just make sure all the weapons are good so as to not break the trust of people who keep trying new ones. Dark souls for example has lots of inferior duplicate weapons. Don't do that. If there are 9 other tools that are almost-the-same as what I've got, then that means what I've got only has a 1/10th chance of being the best. Don't let new weapons fall behind on the upgrade chain either; every tool should come upgraded enough to be used effectively in the area you find it. If not, people won't be able to really try it out.

Game: Harmon:i:c
Dev: AWK
Tools: Godot
Web: https://awk.itch.io/harmonic, https://twitter.com/AWKgamedev, https://awkgamedev.tumblr.com/
Progress:
+ New Actors: Box, Bridge, Pin, Camera and Goal - only a few actors are missing now in the refactor
+ State system for Actors - a Bridge for example has a "Bridged" state which makes it flicker when overlapping a Wall
+ Level loading and switching
+ Persistent Actors system - the Camera and Player actors are persistent between levels now like in the old version
+ Viewport is scaled correctly to the window size
+ Played around with HDR and glow graphics
+ Feeling good about the code structure and Module system I made, it's holding up nicely and actually making my job easier, the Camera and Bridge actors for example share the mFollow module - Camera follows the Player with a maximum range of 1, which makes it lag behind 1 tile max, and Bridges follow the Camera at range 0 plus initial offset, which makes their relative position always the same to the Camera

Here's an example of an Actor, each Module populates the base aBox node with its own functions.
The mSolid for example sets the Actor's physical layers which means that any other moving actor sharing the same layer can't overlap it, module variables are editable too so I can set an actor's physical layers without having to create a new script or module.

The nice thing about this system is that actors don't need to know if other actors have the necessary modules to run something, they simply send functions and let the other actor figure out what to do with them.

list out all features you want. decide which ones are bare minimum needed to be able to play the game properly (you can win, you can lose, and there's some amount of challenge) and group all those for first "release" or milestone. Do only those tasks, and save the rest for doing in a second milestone.

To be fair if you copied there is something even worse: you didn't learn anything. That means that when you get serious gamedeving you will probably struggle if you try to do something a bit different.
