ENB may use OBS but he actually rents an office space and pays for business level internet.

And the reason people support him is because they like his content and want to see him keep doing that. If he wasn't making money as a streamer enough for it to be his day job more or less he would fuck off to do something else because he has family to take care of. So I and people like me keep supporting him because we want to continue watching his content especially since he's doing Souls.

These generals are not for discussing solely Demon's/Dark Souls, they're for discussing the slasher RPG games made by From in general.

Dark Souls is about as dead as System Shock is. The name of the series may not get new titles by itself, but it's common sense and knowledge that Bioshock is effectively a straight continuation, just as From will make a new game in the future that follows in the steps of Kings Field and Dark Souls but isn't explicitly called Dark Souls.
>>
>>182907303
DaS2 babbies are so desperate to make up any excuse to defend that shitty boss. It's hilarious.
>>
>>182907635
It's a fairly slow boss, but it's fair. He has very few if any bullshit moves, it feels a little like a DeS boss.
>>
Fume Knight is overrated especially challenge wise but if you think he's a shitty boss then you're playing the wrong series.
>>
>>182907635
It is, you can use most 2handed greathammer and UGS R2's to dodge under his swings, you can run circles around him because his attacks have deceptively little tracking, most of his high death ratio came from people trying to go for drinks at shit times and trying to get greedy with multiple hits between combos.
>>

Which happens with every boss in every game in the series. It's not Raime's fault that people underestimate him.

That being said, Raime does have that quirk in his AI where he'll stop what he's doing and smash you down if he detects you sipping, which Alonne also shares and which they later brought over to be used with Champ. It's just that item usage can actually be punished in DaS2, much less so in DaS3.

Mercenary. Contrary to what a lot of people will say, the extra FP does actually help if you aren't a scrub who only mashes R1, and if you don't need the strength or vitality, you get the most bang out of Mercenary start.

I really like the summons in 2, in that they didn't have much expansion or backstory. It felt like they were just other adventurers in the area, people just like us.
But if I had to choose one person to know more about, it would be that guy. Or Luet, who decided to dual wield Greatshields of Glory, and is almost as happy as Bradley upon success.

Pyro is quite fun, you actually just need to reach Irithyll or so to unlock the vast majority of the good stuff for them. It's not like Faith where you only get good once you reach TRC and beat SoC, or Sorcery where you have to beat Oceiros and access the Grand Archives to unlock the best stuff.

I know nothing about the game, I don't even know what the first boss looks like. I only know that there are lots of more than 1 boss.
I don't know what weapons are good.
You can watch me fumble around for a good while.

Pyro is ridiculously strong and has a bunch of viable melee options with both unique weapons and Dark infusion.
Faith is easily the most versatile, a "faith" build could mean a bunch of different things.
Sorcery takes quite a bit of skill for successful solo PVP. Try a Heysel Pick build, it's really fun, but not really for sub-SL80 build because it needs 60 INT to shine.

Well that's good to know, an spell I've always wanted to try is the flying fireball that shoots people
Is it doable to use the Onyx blade on a pyromancer build?
Hell, can you have both, good output damage from pyromancy and trade some blows?
>>
>>182909958
Onyx Blade was made for pyro builds, it's highly recommended
>>
>>182909958
Pyro is all about combining fireballs with swordplay, you'll be mixing the two regularly. The only real problem with Pyros is that you're stretched really thin for stats since you have to invest heavily in Int and Fai, while also leveling Att and keeping Vigor and Endurance at respectable levels.
>>
Why is Pyro so boring in DaS1?
>>
Why did occult become dark? Occult sounds so much cooler and has actual lore implications.
>>
>>182910717
Because DaS is the land of Poise
>>
>>182910717
Cause it's OP as shit and the only pyro worth using is black flame.
>>
>>182910740
Occult isn't Dark, it was just another form of Magical damage. Even Divine wasn't properly its own thing, it was just Magical damage that scaled with Faith.

Dark didn't even properly exist until DaS2 made it into its own damage type.

Drop Strength to 14 since that's all you need to hold Onyx 1H. Your Vigor is also really low for SL 90, take some points out of Vit or lower your INT/FAI to get around 30 at least and maybe some extra endurance. I'd also switch Black Fire Orb to Black Flame.

>>
>>182914073
No, you need to offer Pale Tongues for Rosaria to respec. You don't need to be part of the Covenant or rank up in it, fortunately, I believe you just need the Covenant item itself. You can get it without pissing off Sirris.

Lore.

Aldia was petrifying dragons, did you not get that part?
>>
>>182914113
King's Field was the prototype for the prototype of Dark Souls though, it is definitely relevant. It doesn't see much discussion because nobody has played the fucking thing. Doesn't make it less relevant, and the information is there in case somebody wants to take a look at how Dark Souls came into being.
>>
>>182914217
Thanks.
>>
>>182914357
King's Field is relevant but no one discusses it.

King's Field has little/no influence on souls though, except for maybe some of the atmosphere and enemies they copied. Souls combat and level design is all Evergrace/Otogi, with everything else (stats, mechanics, pvp and lore) being just a fantasy version of Armored Core
>>
I never ran a build that used the Lucerne, or used it at all in DaS1. What made it so formidable?
>>
>Reallocating attributes or changing appearance is limited to five times per playthrough.
Why
>>
>>182914730
So that you feel invested, and your actions have consequences.

It's somewhat silly, but there it is.
>>
>>182914683
It dealt thrust damage, so it got counter damage bonuses. However the attacks were really wide-swinging and had long hitboxes, so you were more likely to land those counters than with a spear. Plus it would hit multiple times on some of the swings.
>>
>>182914730
Because From is retarded
You can Alt+F4 right before leaving the covenant window after doing a change and it won't count
But the character I did that with isn't able to summon others players anymore, no idea if it's related to it but I guess it's worth mentioning
>>
>>182914730
>I have never used the respec function
>>
>>182914831
>>182914730
It seems like a last minute add on that someone begged Miyazaki to approve because they didn't want release a game without respecs or deleveling at all, so they just haphazardly slapped it on Rosaria with a 5 use limit.

DS2 did it right by making you feel like you actions had consequence by making you -discover- and -learn how to use- the item that lets you respec, instead of just giving it to you for free but punishing you for using it too many times.

This is how I would have done it:

>Bonfire ascetics, but they cost 5 levels to use. Bosses are respawned at NG+ difficulty/souls and multiplayer is reactivated for that area.
>"respec" by using ascetics to de-level yourself, beat the boss, then level back up.
>>
>>182914831
It just seems weird they would lock it off at five. It's like letting someone go 75% around a ferris wheel before telling them to get off.

Is it like that? It's a little bit like that.
>>
>>182912832
>25 Vigor at SL90
You can stand to drop down to 30/30 since that's supposedly at or near the cap at which Dark and Fire damage scales. Put those points into Vigor and maybe some more Attunement since you won't have enough FP to support casting and doing Onyx's WA.
>>
>>182915135
>>182914730

They wanted to force players into NG+ to get more respecs.

The idea is to prevent people from making "dedicated pvp" characters and forcing you to replay through the main game over again to improve covenant activity, because covenant item-seeking is the only pvp that From wants to reward.
>>
>>182914925
Have you been invaded?
>>
>>182914846
Sounds like something I'd like to try out, can I run real quick to the catacombs and grab it no trouble?
>>
>>182915338
nope, but I can invade and get summoned just fine
>>
>>182915392
Oh yeah, it's not hard at all to rush. Just keep running.

Usually what players do is they rush to the catacombs, grab the lucerne and great scythe, then jump down to vamos and upgrade them to +5 real quick.

Lucerne is a boss-killer though, it's not that great against regular enemies because there's no point in waiting for the counter hits on them and the attacks are slow enough that moving from one enemy to another is kinda wonky. Good to use a longsword and then swap to the lucerne for bosses or invasions.
>>
I want to be a righteous paladin in Dark Souls 1. What are the best miracles and weapons for such a thing?
>>
>>182915480

What makes Curved Greatswords not awful?

It feels like they're too easy to dodge, parry and outspace. Also they require a gorillion poise to not get staggered by other ultras.
>>
>>182918231
>no reach
>slow attacks

Also the L2 has poise. The L1s are all you need on that weapon because they have very fast startup and range.

>>182918380
They are the middle ground between greatswords and ultras in damage, speed and range. They also all have generally good WAs, with 20-30 poise on Harald you can tank almost any ultra attack with its WA.

I know Dark Souls III has a lot of fanservicey moments, but can we all agree this moment was really good?
>>
>>182918794
Executioner's is stuck as an 'alright' Greatsword so there's not much you can do with it that you can't do better with other Greatswords unfortunately. MLGS is perfectly good though, great damage scaling at only 40 INT means you can stack poise like crazy compared to other Greatswords or you can go a full 60 INT caster with it. The R2 beams are pretty shit in PvP admittedly but the WA is great for rollcatching and trades.
>>
>>182918794
MLGS is great. It's got a lot of reach and the charged R2 is super neat for baiting with.

Executioner is mediocre, but it's primarily a PvE weapon.
>>

Fuck no. An area wasted on a half-assed fanservice. It's just a run to a shit boss.

Either get a bow or crossbow and try to shoot it down, or learn to dodge its attacks long enough for it to come closer. It deals pure magic damage, so if you're using a shield, make sure it has high magic resistance.

The butterfly is optional, but unlocks a shortcut with the reward you get from it.
>>
>>182925710
That's a lot easier than it sounds. This needle like thing it shoots at me is a pain in the ass to dodge
>>
>>182925669
Eventually it rests on the edge of the bridge and you can wail on it for a bit. So just don't get hit by the ranged attacks.

Alternatively, go human and summon the NPC summon Witch Beatrice. She can solo it pretty easily for you.
>>
>>182925669
there's an npc summon who can basically fight it for you otherwise just keep dodging and wait for to it lower itself down to the bridge

Right now I'm dawning the Knight armor that you find in the place before Moonlight Butterfly cause this thing looks fucking awesome. I love it. Anyways, I'm using the Halberd from Undead Parish, and using the Tower Kite Shield still. I tend to block enemies attacks and hit them when they're ready. I can't parry for shit.
>>
>>182926647
>I can't parry for shit.

go practice on the undead by the parish or in the burg. black knights if you haven't killed them yet. parrying in DaS1 is the easiest in the whole series.
>>
>>182926647
Do you roll much? Rolling protects you from all damage after you do it, it's the main way to avoid damage.

If you are over 50% equip weight though, your roll is very slow and you are vulnerable for a while after you do it. If you stay at 50% or lower, you have a much faster roll. You should stay in that weight class group for now, since a little bit less armor is worth not dodging.

Look at the stats on the tower kit shield. It has only 30% magic damage reduction. That's why you can't block the butterfly's attacks, blocking still lets 70% of its damage come through.

You don't need to parry at all to beat the game, but you do need to roll. At least until you can get enough health, stamina, and strength for a massive greatshield, which can block 80-90% of all damage. Then you don't "have" to roll anymore, but you still should.

Either way, the moonlight butterfly is optional. There's an area that you need to access later (when you're soul level 30-50 probably) in darkroot garden, and there are 3 ways to get it. You can either beat the butterfly, buy the crest of artorias, or defeat the hydra in darkroot basin (which you can get to by taking a right as soon as you enter the garden from the blacksmith).

The next "intended" place for you to go is lower undead burg. There is a key you get before the gargoyles (behind the gate that the armored pig was in front of) which will open the way there. It opens the door at the start of the bridge with the fire dragon (where solaire was).

But you could also go to other places instead, there's the catacombs and new londo ruins, which are by Firelink Shrine. They just don't have much to offer until later in the game when you can progress further.

I hope you're not one of those lunatics who confine themselves to some arbitrary meta levels, and don't level up all their stats to 50, to be able to wear the heaviest armor with the highest damage absorption and don't use protection rings.

How can you possibly compare the two?
The Pontiff has infinite poise and never fucking stops attacking. Friede has no poise, and summoning turns the fight into bullying the poor girl by R1 spam lock.
>>
>>182946721
If it were a fight where you go straight to phase 3 and she has classic poise, then I'd be delighted to take her on solo. But because of those first two phases every single time, fuck her.
>>
>>182946972
On the first phase she's easily punished during the invincibility attack, and on the second one she becomes real passive and just spams the long range ice attacks while you're wailing at daddy.
It's a great fight, but it's not THAT hard to justify summoning.

How to fix Bort:

-Take out phase one, he starts the fight in phase two.
-Drastically increase the speed of his frost breath so you can't just R1 spam his ass for his entire health pool while he casts it.

You now have a vastly improved Bort that people can't just kill on their first try.

You seem to hold the idea that bosses' only function is to be difficult.

>lmao let's decrease the variety from the fight by only having one phase

>>182945957
If you want to beat TRC on low level, respec to use hidden body, add slumbering dragoncrest to get past the pve and bleed, poison or pestilent mercury for the bosses. It's hard but possible. For the proper experience though, go at sl80 (or 100-120 for ng+)
>>182947880

>>
>>182948397
I don't think the game's first non-tutorial boss needs any fixing.
>>
>>182948560
It's not that their only function is to be difficult, but one of their main functions is to not be easy.
>>
>>182944298
BoC can be inconsistent as fuck and it is also shit for the same reasons that Ancient Wyvern / Dragon God / Yhorm and Wolnir are shit : the entire fight is a gimmick where your build or playstyle does not matter at all, it's not challenging, just incredibly ANNOYING.

And the fact that rng can fuck you over million times in a row you will have to run through the eye-searing shitshow of Lost Izalith over and over.
>>
>>182948397
No to the first point. Just start the second phase earlier, 60-65% or so
>increase his hp pool but make him even weaker to dark so that the deep battleaxe kills him in the sane amount of huts give or take
>give him a flatten attack if you stay under him too long
>>
>>182948714
I'd say leave the first phase as is. But add a frost aura on the second phase, so the player couldn't just stay under his butt safely.
>>
>>182948714
If you put your summon sign down for Vordt you 'd know he's plenty challenging for a lot of hosts.

But yeah, I don't really see how Vordt needs any particular fixing because between Phalanx, Taurus, Last Giant, Cleric Beast and Vordt, Bort is probably the most challenging first non-tutorial boss. And yeah, DS2 and Bloodborne don't have tutorial bosses but Last Giant and Cleric Beast ars kinda considered the first bosses.
>>
>>182948797
>make him even weaker to dark so that the deep battleaxe kills him in the sane amount of huts give or take
Why?
>>
>>182948810
Under his butt is already kinda dangerous in second phase because his entire body is a hitbox in the second phase.
>>
>>182948986
Nah. Just the triple charge and belly flop reach under him. It's still very safe staying close to him.
>>
>>182948986
I think he's specifically referring to when he's using his frost breath attack.

You know, the one that lasts like 10 seconds where you can just wail on him the entire time with no danger at all.
>>
>>182948976
To reward people who take down the mimic. Iirc that thing can 1shot you with the kick. If not, it can take more than half your hp. Maybe make that harder to kill too so you have to either be good at the game or smart enough to use the drake to kill it?
>>
Morning gents

Sorry to ask, but I don't suppose any of you know of the top of you head some of the more interesting low level raw weapons? If I need to hit up the DLCs to get them I will, but there's only so long I can use a Raw Broadsword on a build that's based around using different weapons before I get bored, so any suggestions would be greatly welcome.

I intend on investing in a Raw Dragonslayer's Axe as soon as possible, after I've finished off Oceiros and The Champ and can re-invest my levels. I would love a longer ranged option though
>>
How is wolnir's sword on a quality build? Does it have enough ar for NG+7?
>>
fuck havel
>>
>>182949110
Mimics hardly pose any danger at all. You just circle around them and they just do their swipes or grabs with little tracking. The kick is not something you have to worry about unless you're for some reason trying to distance yourself away from the mimic.
>>
>>182949327
Yeah, but do newbies know that?
>>
>>182949381
Newbies wouldn't know how the dark axe from the mimic chest and the next boss are tied by your obscure logic either. Especially it's not a weapon for their build. The changes you proposed don't make much sense, honestly.
>>
>>182949327
Almost no enemies pose real threat. The game should be balanced around first/second playthroughs. Not to say that they should be casual friendly, just that a new player should be rewarded for exploring and adapting
>>
>>182948015
Well it's a pvp character and I'd say he's pretty good at dodging players. Too bad O&U's hyperarmor and stun were nerfed, I should revamp my main but I play most of my time on this sl50 29% equip load LKS dagger invading char so nothing matters except the new dlc I have to finish

Hello anons. Pic related is what I feel like building for next. For invasions and those 2 weapons would be my main weapons.
Main focus is some regen, princess+replenishment+blessed off-hand.

Looking for any tips how to make this better. Should I drop int/faith to minimum and just go with resin on these weapons or is the stat investment at this point good enough to net me some extra dmg?

DaS2:
>technically you can 2 shot pursuer with ballistae and parries if that counts which opens up the bastille for looting
>Gutter/black gulch up to the rotten is accessible with cat ring
>this means you can use the fragrant branch to get into the shaded woods which opens up more stuff and technically means you can grind to get into drangleic castle
>along the way there would be non-respawning enemies to get points from (e.g. heide knights = black knights)

bosses to think about:
>Dragonrider 3k HP
>Last Giant 2.5k
>Old Dragonslayer 2.8k
>Flexile 3k
>Sentinels 2.3K but there's 3 of them
>gargoyles 1.4k but there's 5 of them
>skeleton lords don't even crack 1k hp per individual but there's a fuck ton of them
>vanguard 1.4k

wow, dark souls 2 bosses are complete damage spongs, for reference neither garg in the first game breaks 1k hp and their collective total is less than 1.5k, jesus christ

Skeleton lords would be a good starting point though, what weapons and buffs can we get access to for good damage from within these areas:
>forest of fallen giants
>drangleic castle
>lost bastille
>shaded woods
>gutter
>heide's tower of flame
>wherever else we can get to that you can think of

it's not looking good boys
>>
>>182951174
DeS has stupidly OP spells like Firestorm but within the level sets you can't skip any bosses and you have to jump through some hoops to get all the gear you need for the complete hypermode build so that will limit what bosses you can and can't oneshot.

DaS 2 limited the usefulness of hypermode and pyros so that's kinda right out too.
>>
Is it possible to make a viable Golden Ritual Spear build?
>>
>>182952298
With the sole exception being Darklurker, couldn't you kill every other boss with Climax?
>>
>>182952413
Let's say Vanguard and Phalanx don't count for the same reason Asylum demon doesn't count, so you'd have to build a hypermode setup within:

1-1
1-2
2-1
3-1
4-1
5-1

We can get the clever rat ring from 3-1, but the morion blade is locked behind storm king (which is gonna be impossible anyway rip).

How about this then. Knight seems to be the best starting class for some reason for this.
>>
>>182952567
This is a good call but darklurker is the problem

maybe what this proves is that the technical challenge here needs to be modified to something else

kill a boss in 10 seconds or something might be better suited to the game than literally one shotting it like in das1
>>
>>182952298
in SOTFS you don't even need to get the gutter branch to get to shaded woods. Also you can get a quick 6 chunks and 1 slab with 2 ascetics in cardinal tower, so you can get a free +9 weapon, all you have to do is kill pursuer and last giant (mcduff has large shards).

Unfortunately dark bead / dark hail isn't quite as OP so you can't one shot bosses with it, but you can sure as hell 2/3 shot bosses with something like a resonant +10 weapon grand lance and channeller's trident, which can all be obtained in early game.
>>
>>182952674
>but the morion blade is locked behind storm king
All boss weapons are also behind Flamelurker.
I think you still can get Ring of Magical Sharpness and Geri's stiletto without killing any bosses past the tutorial one so that's something. And you can get access to Sage Freke without killing any bosses as well.
>>
>>182952862
Sage Freke only gives you the good shit for demon souls though, the best you can get from him is Fire Toss (I think), so thats:

1.2*1.5*1.2 = 2.16xFire Toss damage

how much actual damage is that?
>>
Just how bad is a hexer build in DS3? Give it to me straight.
>>
>>182953137
Oh fug, I forgot that Firestorm was locked behind Yuria who is locked in 1-3 AND you need Dragon God's soul for that.

Well that's complete dogshit
>>
>>182953510
Either it's a 60 int sorceror who uses inferior dark sorceries, or it's a 40/40 pyro that uses some dark spells as well.

The reason dark sucks in DS3 is that it no longer has it's own catalyst scaling. It still has slight stat scaling (DS3 spell damage is affected by scaling of both catalyst and the spell itself) but the end result is that a dark build is just a pure sorcerer using spells that misses out on the faith scaling part of dark, or it's a pyro build that misses out on the catalyst scaling of the best int or fth only catalysts.

The "correct" way to go dark is to make a pyro build that uses the izalith catalyst for fighting fire-resistant enemies. Dark is now just a backup magic type for other builds, it's not it's own thing anymore..
>>
>>182953510
Hexes are no longer a thing, only pyromancies, miracles and sorceries with Dark effects.

>>182953876

It does, but those catalysts also have lower spellbuff.

You can see Gnaw on this chart, which does 299 on 35/35 with the izalith staff, or 280 on the court sorceror staff on 60 int. That means that going pure dark only gives you an extra 6% damage, but at the cost of not being able to use all the sorceries out there.
>>
>>182954063
I only managed to do Yhorm on the third attempt because the first time I tried to do him "legit", the second time I found the Stormruler but tried to use it like the DeS Stormruler and it took some testing outside of the bossroom to figure out how to charge the actual attack.

Yhorm is the single saddest piece of wasted potential in DaS 3 for me. It would be a great fight if it was a straight up fight and the only way to get the Stormruler would be to get Siegward in the fight. Otherwise you'd fight a Yhorm with slightly reduced health that's tough but not a completely unreasonable hp tank like he's now. The stormruler from Siegward would also only knock him down and you would go and visceral him.

>but you can fight him without the Stormruler xD

Yeah, well, they discourage that heavily by making it way too reliant on having weapons that can reach his head and having an instant win button in the same room you don't have to do any work for to unlock.

faith builds are faith builds whether you use lightning or not. Being able to have better weapons AND the highest damage spells/buffs AND trivializing pve all at the same time is what makes faith great, almost every dex or strength build is equal or better as a faith build, if you use the buffs semi-competently.

>>182957625
to be fair, some of this stuff was already in the game but took a while for people to figure out how to properly use it, or in some cases like lightning arrow or projected heal, is only dlc. But the buffs to elemental damage weapons and sharp infusion really benefited faith builds in general, since it made most of the faith weapons (lothric knight greatsword, saint's bident, lothric knight sword, etc.) far better than the intelligence or fire scaling weapons.

The only elemental build that doesn't seem to hold up against pure physical builds now is focusing on dark damage. But every dark build is either a 60 int sorcerer or 40/40 pyro so it doesn't really matter.

it doesn't matter because Lothric Knight Straight Sword is (technically) a faith straight sword. It gets its best scaling (S) from lightning or blessed infusion.

Sunlight Straight Sword also has some of the highest AR after you cast it's (stackable) WA buff.

Deep protection + SSS on 60 faith gives you higher damage than any 80 dex sharp straight sword

The fact that 60 faith is even comparable to 80 dex should be proof enough that it's the best casting class.
>>

20/80 is more stat investment than 40/40, and something like 30/70 is more efficient than 20/80.

meanwhile you're giving up one of the best WA movesets for a shitty buff.

the % difference between strength and dex scaling determines the point where different investments overtake each other. Usually if letter grades are within 1 letter of each other, it's always best 40/40 before going either 66/40 or 40/80.

What the softcaps do is determine where those points might change. Because the gains between 0 and 40, 40 and 60, 60 and 80. and 80 and 100 are always (usually) the same, if it's C/B you know that strength will overtake dex after 40 dex most of the time.

So in other words, 2 letter grade differences is a bit weird, but is most likely best at:
>xx/40 dex first
>27/40 then strength
>27/80 then dex
>66/80 then strength
>66/99 then dex
in ascending order of level investment

What can you tell me about the Bastard Sword, it seems completely outclassed by any other greatsword in the games it appears in. In DaS1 you can buy it, but you get the Claymore before getting to the Parish. In DaS2 you use it long enough to get the Claymore. Not sure about it in 3.

you haven't presented a single worthwhile argument for why faith should be taken seriously. Pretending you know what you're talking about doesn't suddenly make faith viable. Because it's an exclusive and certain people in this general can't handle that fact. Also because some people intentionally try to trigger the aforementioned group and people from the first group false flagging as the second.

Bloodborne also isn't a Souls game, it's very different from Souls.

>>
>>182962259
Because when Bloodborne came out, it was dramatically different than any souls game (different engine, different publisher, different aesthetics and very different combat). It wasn't until DS3 was released on the same engine using the same game design that the two series started being similar again.

Combine that with the fact that most people here are PC only players that have some spiteful rage against console players and mixing the two generals is a recipe for disaster.

Also Dark Souls with ayylmao and guns is Frame Gride, but no one actually bought a dreamcast

Situational in a common invasion situation where no other spell does even remotely similar, making it not "situational" but "vital" for most invasions.

You need ATTN for tear's 2 slots, but a pyro build can cast tears without much problem. Still not comparable to melee builds but not as faith exclusive as other castings, I agree.

actually no you cant make that argument, because being at the top of the meta requires speed and pressure. Miracles meanwhile are all about trading hits and pretty much nothing else, they have the exact same problem as ultras which is you're hoping for your opponent to be a retard and trade with you.

>People who are playing for invasions or co-op or making builds
and you can make anything viable in PVE and Co-op so this gives absolutely zero extra credit to the miracle builds, especially when the top-tier PVE build is just deleting everything for the host as a sorcerer, because crystal soul spear will only ever hit people on dial up and PVE enemies.

>Situational in a common invasion
the amount of places where you can blast someone off someplace up in the air is pretty limited when you take the entirety of the game into account. Good for pontiff invasions if you can get people onto the rafters sure, but unless you manage to make people so angry that they chase you there again, niche.

Except that DS2 shares more in common with DeS in the world design, mechanics, bosses, stats, overall speed and movesets. All DS1 shares with DeS is the basic game engine, lighting, and aesthetics.

And BB shares more in common with DS3 than DeS, including world design, mechanics, overall speed, development staff, and even some of the aesthetics and matchmaking.

The only link between BB and DeS is Miyazaki, Sony and studio Japan, but From's entire development team, genre, game engine, aesthetics, and philosophy behind designing the levels, systems and combat are completely different. Aka, everything that actually matters.

that's the same shitty argument again. "no true player would ever let himself take damage"

You can say that about literally -every- weapon in the game and it doesn't mean shit. If you want to prove faith is shit, you need to prove that no matter what strategy you use, it is objectively inferior to another stat distribution. Not subjectively based on what you think the opponent can/can't dodge.

If an attack has the same area of effect, does less damage, takes longer to use, and has no other benefits then you could say it's worse.

You're not arguing faith is bad, you're arguing that EVERYTHING in the game is bad.

I hope you realize that the reason curved swords and straight swords + black knight shield are the meta is exactly because of their movesets and how difficult it is to avoid damage from them, compared to how easy it is to dodge an ultra user.

I'm explaining to you why like 90% of the stuff in the game is bad.

lets take another example of a weapon class thats not meta: Greatswords, no pressure hope you can hyper armor trade with smaller weapons and prey you dont have to face a big dick ultra or faith user who will outtrade you.

the only good spells are the ones that can apply pressure or are very good at roll catching.
>>
>>182964216
crystal weapon is weaker than darkmoon blade for the same investment, and most sorcery suffers heavily from the same problem of being easily dodged as miracles, but miracles have better utility options and more unique weapons

for pure buffing, darkmoon is always better. Crystal has it's niche though if you want to buff while using niche sorceries alongside it for a particular purpose, but darkmoon does the same thing better, with even more niche miracles to justify it.

>anon thinks all weapons are equal and there is no such thing as certain things being better than others
That's not what I said at all. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how skill in video games works. You think it's a linear scale where if player A is more 'skilled' than player B, they will always beat player B no matter what setup player B uses.

Some things are -objectively- better because you can accomplish the same thing with better results and no additional drawbacks. In order for faith to be shit and not worth using, it has to be objectively worse. It's not.

Some things are -subjectively- better because you have personal experience, and practice with them, or -subjectivley- worse because you played against people who fell for them. Faith is subjectively worse against certain situations, of course it is. But so are other builds.

There are way too many things Faith has going on for it that are purely unique to faith for it to ever be shit, the variety and utility means that there are enough situations where faith builds have an objective or subjective advantage. If you know how the game's mechanics work, faith offers you plenty of major advantages that no one else has and are easily able to exploit the opponent.

I'm being realistic about the range of strategies and possibilities the game offers to point out the difference between objective fact and subjective opinion.

you can beat shitty players with any weapon setup in the game, which makes any statement about miracles being "viable" pointless since it is no more viable than other inferior options.

Both DeS and BB have a philosophy of giving you an archstone / lamp at level start and then for a boss you killed and the rest is usually handled with physical shortcuts. >doesn't want to wait through 2 loading screens
>instead wants to backtrack for 15-20 minutes through an area you already cleared just to get back to where you can give an arbitrary key item to someone you met 3 hours ago

Because in Japan, not being able to warp in DS1 was seen as bad game design and a regression from DeS, and people hated not having a proper hub world anymore. That, and DS1 had little/no reason to backtrack since there was no world tendency or bonfire ascetics.

DS1 is the only game that gets it -wrong- by forcing redundant backtracking. In all the other games, backtracking is optional and there's some benefit for doing it thanks to World Tendency and Bonfire Asceteics. In DS1 it's practically mandatory.

DS3 is fine because it gives you warping -and- no backtracking benefits, but it's not idea.

DeS and DS2 are the only ones that did it right by giving you warping and backtracking benefits.

Whenever you can give players more options for improving the gameplay experience without taking away anything else, that's better game design.

No level up waifu was first, since DS1's original draft involved Priscilla and the painted world as your waifu and hub world.

The only reason they removed warping was for miyazaki to show off how he connected the overworld with all the shortcuts. Once you've seen most of the short cuts (after anor londo) you get warping again because there was no reason to stop it.

DS1's level up and defense systems are also nonsensical for a game that doesn't allow warping, since it makes low level enemies completely trivialized once you get past a certain point, and the souls they drop is never worth it.
>>
>>182966423
DS1 backtracking is really fast due to the way the world is connected in DS1. You can get from the absolute top of the world in Duke's archive to the bottom (Lost Izalith) in that 15-20 minutes easily when you have the shortcuts unlocked.
>>
>>182965031
Too bad in DS3 there's no consequences for having heavy shit on. But if you try to engage after I whiff the first swing then we will be trading hits because of the provided poise. Even if they roll the 2nd swing then I just roll away with no hits or trades being made. Thats mostly because the recovery time is very low. More I think about it the more I hate how DS3 is so forgiving.

Although the reason why i've been seeing a lot of success with it could be because I play more defensively than normal.

The only utility I use is the black flame snake for poke, blessed weapon for damage, and dragonshield's WA to catch them rolling.

echoing what I said here: >>182966610

Yeah, perfect accident. Reminder that DS1's biggest market was the US PC market, yet they originally had no intentions of a PC release whatsoever and bandai only approved it after fans petitioned for it. From was completely clueless about DS1.

I think the big thing is that most people on PC had never played a game quite like Souls, because a lot of younger PC gamers never played Castlevania, Ocarina of Time, or shadow of the collosus. The closest comparison would be western MMOs like Everquest, Runescape, or WoW, but those were mostly point-and-click and aimed at younger audiences, not M-rated 18+ players.

But to a lot of console players, DS1's lack of warping did feel like a regression from DeS, because it created lots of arbitrary punishments for making any choices on where to go other than what the game intends. DeS rewarded you for warping around and sequence breaking, DS1 just makes the game more tedious or harder if you sequence break, rather than actually changing your progression options.
>>
>>182965149

DeS levels, bosses, enemies, movesets, and the amount of time you take to level up to softcaps are all slower than DS2, which are all slower than DS1.

The fastest areas and bosses in DeS are slightly faster than the average or slower bosses of DS2/DS1. It's just a much more slow paced game than the other two, and between DS1 and DS2, DS2 is the slower one.

>I think the better argument is that PC has always had a history of tough as nails games filled with secrets
Only if you're talking about 90s point and click adventures. The "dumbing down" of games is not a console phenomenon, it was an industry trend to try and make games appeal to broader, global audiences, especially adults who were only interested in games for the story/entertainment value rather than the more "game" aspect of it.

The dumbing down trend ended when mobile games showed up and scooped that market back up, so now it's no longer profitable to try and convince George McDadbod to stop playing candy crush / farmville and start playing halo with his kids.

That's why the Wii was so successful but the wiiU sold like dogshit.

How? Literally watch the games with your eyes, DeS is so much slower paced than DS1 or DS2 was. Claymore in DeS feels slower than Zwei in DS1, and how many levels in DS1 require a minimum of 5-10 minutes to clear enemies just to get to the boss, like 3-1 or 3-2? DeS levels are way longer than the average DS1 level.
>>
>>182968364
DeS bosses are about the same speed as 2, there are fast bosses, there are slow bosses we can make retarded comparisons all day, the actual point is that DeS bosses have little to no tracking, both games are way slower than 3 or BB, why anyone but Luci tries to argue this is beyond me
>>
>>182967305
>DeS rewarded you for warping around and sequence breaking

Let's see what "sequence breaking" actually means :

"In computer and video games, sequence breaking is the act of performing actions or obtaining items out of the intended linear order, or of skipping “required” actions or items entirely.[1] Sequence breaking is often used to beat a game unusually quickly, to beat it while only completing a few objectives or obtaining a few items, to obtain useful items early in the game, to make the game more difficult, or to help push a game as far as possible in some other way."

By definition DeS doesn't really have "sequence breaking" because while you can warp around, you have to do the worlds of DeS strictly in sequence. Also DeS has absolutely no optional content.

Warping between the different worlds in DeS isn't "sequence breaking", it's just following an intended sequence ask the game kinda expects you to do the 1-worlds first before going into 1-2, 2-2, 3-2 and so on.

LOL. If a PC game is hard, there will be a trainer made for it within a week. Even games like Tekken have trainers for them, not to mention macros.

The Souls series isn't even particularly hard once you learn how the game works, but that didn't stop the cheat engine shenanigans from popping up almost instantly.

demon souls claymore is the size of an ultra greatsword so I don't know if it will be faster than than the tiny ds1 claymore.
>>182968716
I wouldn't really say that it's WAY slower than 3, the bosses attack faster but that's about it.
The players rolling and attack animations are fast in demon's souls too .
>>
>>182968728
"sequence breaking" might be the wrong term, but the way DeS handles progression is much closer to DS2 where each available path has a different set of loot based around a theme, you can go down any of them at any time, and beating the areas requires using different play styles and equipment.

DeS and DS2 are the only two games to do that. DS1, DS3, and BB all have linear level progression where there is clearly one area with easier enemies than any other options (if you even have options, most of the time you don't) and as you level up you just get universally stronger instead of just having more options to approach problems. Probably because Miyazaki really likes more linear games where you stick with the same strategy/equipment throughout.

Tell someone new to the game to pick jump to lower undead burgh and do Capra as his first actual boss and see how well it goes. The entire argument has always and will always be about how the games are designed to be played, you can fucking parrywalk and go do the giant lord as your first boss in 2 but that's not the point and anyone with half a brain sees it.

DeS / DS2:

>each one plays differently, but equally hard
>all of them are worthwhile progress
>can quit and go to another one at any time
>every time you clear an area, enemies become harder, there's new items available, and you can go back for more

DS1:
>1 door is open, 4 require a secret key that I hope you chose at the start of the game
>1 door is clearly easier than the others
>3 of the 5 doors lead to dead ends and make no progress toward the endgame, you have to go through them again anyway later on.
>once you go through the door, you can't go back home unless you backtrack
>after you clear an area it's completely worthless, yet you still have to backtrack through it

DS3/BB:
>1 door is open. All other doors lead you back to where you started.
>sometimes a second door will open
>only the 1 door is worthwhile progress, second door is always a dead end
>you can go home at any time, but you have to usually resume where you lastwre
>after you clear an area it's completely worthless

DeS and DS2 have their flaws, but giving the player unique progression options was not one of them. DS3 was a step forward but was still missing bonfire ascetics/world tendency and any possible parallel area progression.

Literally in the same sentence, look up an old patch DS2 any% speedrun. If you parry certain enemies then roll onto them you can walk on air, this lets you just straight up walk past 90% the vast majority of content and bosses by just hovering around their arena.
Nobody argues that parrywalking and doing bosses like Veldstad as your first one are in any way the game is designed to be played because its fucking obvious, by the same degree telling people to go do Kellogs as their first boss is fucking retarded as they will be underleveled and undergeared, yes you can beat all the games unarmed at NG+7 SL1 without ever healing or rolling, it doesn't mean they were designed to be played that way. >I enjoy "backtracking", I like to explore and feel like I'm stranded out in some strange place. Quick traveling takes away all the fun.

I agree, but I think DS1 did it wrong by making backtracking offer no incentive. Enemies don't get stronger, there's no way to respawn bosses, there's no new items, all worthwhile consumables can be bought (so nothing of value is gained) the soul drops are worthless by the time you get there, and most enemies are facing the wrong way when you approach from anywhere but the intended direction.

I would have made kindling a bonfire raise the enemies to NG+ difficulty and soul rewards, and respawn crystal lizards.
>>
>>182972404
Backtracking is good if it adds something to the experience. 1 does by forcing people to either progress with what might be suboptimal weapon upgrades in the hopes of finding a better method of getting back to where they started than the path they took to get where they are now. Blighttown being the main example of this for early playthroughs where you are stuck in a really shitty place but the way you came is so bad that you don't want to backtrack to buy moss/upgrade your gear, most people end up sucking it up and pushing through anyway. This is good because it forces players to choose.
A bad example of backtracking would be trying to kill snakeboy after killing tits because for some reason the game always spawns you back at the first bonfire of Anor Londo, that you can't even rest at due to the firekeeper being dead/agroed, forcing you to do the elevator run every time you die.

I doubt it. From has never really tried to do platforming except for some of the early (PS1) armored core games, and it was never anything like Shulva.

Yui Tanimura probably had as much influence as he did, Scholar's credits added a few new level designers, mostly fresh faces that didn't even come back for DS3, so that might be some influence.

DaS2 is the game where you can literally kill everything enough times that they just stop respawning all together.

You can't deny that DS2 has better fashion than 1 and 3, especially 3
>>
>>182980380
2 did a few things very well, it was just that the few good parts were buried in a mountain of shit.

But then they just ignored those few good bits in an effort to distance themselves from 2 as much as possible, despite the fact that if they had discarded the garbage and kept only the miniscule amount of good, it would have made 3 a much better game.
>>
>>182981210
then everyone would just pump their vit to the bare minimum necessary to deal with that debuff and still fastroll
knowing from they'd probably gimp it to the point of uselessness after a couple of updates too

In the other games, you have to actually be able to avoid everything or kill them to get to the boss fog, then you have to step through and fight the boss in whatever state you are in with whatever resources you have left.

In DaS2, you can literally just kill one or two enemies, then run back to the bonfire, rinse, and repeat. You just keep repeating that for all of the enemies one after the other, then you can just sit at the bonfire and casually stroll to the boss without having to fight a single enemy, allowing you to fight the boss with full health, resources, and no challenge at all.

All DaS2 did was make shit more casual-friendly and more tedious.

I unironically like ENB, and I would guess that around 50-60% of /dsg/ does, too.

I enjoy his stream, his playthroughs and his commentary.
His latest DkS2 run has even made me consider installing the game again, for one more playthrough.

I love Dark Souls, ENB, and /dsg/ at the same time. But I also hate all three.

also nobody would ever be able to tell if you're immune to it or not, so someone could waste their time and health trying to poke you just to eventually find out that it does nothing

Where are you meant to go in the first DS2 dlc? I thought I was done with sanctum city which seemed like a whole ordeal I was glad to see the back of. I killed the gank squad boss in the cave with the laughably weak NPC summons only to find out it was optional (kind of suspected it). Only other way I can think of going is past that cheesy pyro jester with the lake of dinosaurs but that seems wrong too.

90% prediction, based on reading the other guy's movement in the neutral. You can't wait for the start of a running attack and then decide to run away. Most players have a typical rhythm or a tell such as always backing up before they start a run. Some players are super predictable, and won't ever sprint unless they're about to go for a running attack.

Once you can read movement, and you've confirmed the other guy isn't too laggy, then you can try it.
