Reread it. Vlad pierces him with three stakes, but none of them hit anywhere specific, and Vlad himself never expected it to be a lethal blow. He just wanted Karna immobalized so he could sent a practical tidal wave of stakes at him for a finishing blow.

His regeneration is very good, but Apoc makes a point of saying several times that a Servant usually won't be put down unless you destroy the spiritual core by destroying the head or heart. Karna's heart was never pierced by the stakes.

It's not a weird complaint because normally, good characters die so you can at least see something accomplished. You look at F/SN, and at the very end, you have to see Shirou come out ahead. Which is good because Shirou is good - and so the sacrifices act.

On the other hand, something like F/Z is set-up in a tragic light. You might have someone you want to win (i.e. DUDEfags) but it's really all pointless, because in the end, nobody is going to be the winner. For secondaries, they love it because it's dark and edgy. People who already are familiar with the series know how it's going to go down from the start - a bit of dramatic irony, because from the beginning, you know how it ends. Kirei lives, Gil lives, Saber gets booted, Kerry finds Shirou in the fire.

Now, it's entirely possible that Apoc could just be Higashide's very elaborate and counterintuitive attempt at writing a tragedy hidden inside of the romance of Sieg and Jeanne. But frankly, I'm pretty sure the only tragedy is the plot itself. Pretty much the only people who can walk away from the ending of the story saying "well, I am satisfied" are Astolfofags. But since they're literally faggots, they don't get to have an opinion one way or another.

That's just touching on those. EXTRA builds up a lot of the enemy masters as not really being bad people, but (You) have to keep pressing on because your life is on the line. There's a payoff. Other Nasuverse works, Tsukihime, KnK, whatever, have people die with some sort of payoff.

Character deaths in fiction are rewarded with a satisfying ending. If the ending is shit, those deaths are pointless, and the story is shit.

Karna's got a whole skill about how he can pretty much instantly see into people's hearts without any effort. He sees that Siegfried and Arjuna have some similarities and because A) Siegfried gives him a good fight and B) he's still curious about what he felt when Arjuna killed him in the end, he wants to fight him more.

On Siegfried's part, it's being excited that someone managed to wound him again for the first time since he got the Armor of Fafnir. Also, Karna still asked to fight Siegfried again in the LN, they even remarked on how unusual it was for him to ask something for himself.
