You're confusing Naoto Ohshima's vision of Sonic with SEGA's actual official final version before SA1. Classic Sonic was a mute kawaii mascot character to SEGA because he was and still is a company mascot. Ohshima was the only one who wanted him to be like in the OVA and that's why the Sonic CD cutscenes are the way they are too.

A lot of random promo art out of Japan, like all the pics in the Sonic Screensaver, was Sonic looking cute in every day situations. But the character concept and personality behind Sonic as Oshima and Naka thought him up was a cool dude who goes fast. So the movies in CD and the OVA, as well as descriptions in manuals and the like, show that side of Sonic more, which the Western marketing latched onto more (and expanded to varying levels of assholery).

This could in part also explain Sonic's larger popularity in the West than Japan. The dude with 'tude shtick was all the rage in the 90s, so Sonic fit right in. There's no shortage of kawaii mascots in Japan though, and the contrast between SEGA's mascot usage of Sonic and the actual games could've hampered him in Japan somewhat. But that's speculation on my part.

There are three explanations, and in the absence of a canonical explanation any of them make equal amounts of sense:

1) The altar near the Mystic Ruins is not the same as the altar on Angel Island, and that's what Gerald studied.
2) The echidnas had written records regarding the altar, the interactions between the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald, and its relationship with Chaos and the Chao. These records are what Gerald studied.
3) Gerald managed to get aboard Angel Island and studied the Master Emerald and altar there. Either there were no echidnas there (Knuckles is canonically the last echidna and was born 34 years after the Ark was closed, so who knows what echidnas were like back then) or Gerald was able to make friends with the echidnas. If you believe Shadow was based on the Hidden Palace mural, this explanation supports that. If there were echidnas and Gerald made friends with them, this would also explain why Knuckles trusted Eggman so easily because both him and Gerald fit the description of "bald scientist human with a mustache"

But again, there's no canonical explanation so all of the above are headcanon. That said, it does not by itself mean SA2's plot doesn't make sense, just that the plot implies certain things that aren't explained because the explanation would detract from the story. We don't need a four hour lecture on ancient echidna archaelogy and an in-depth explanation of Gerald's research techniques in the middle of the game; this isn't Metal Gear Solid.

The altar you can get to in the Mystic Ruins adventure zone is obviously on Angel Island. This is the first time I've ever talked with anyone who didn't think that. You get up to that area, where you access Ice Cap and Red Mountain, through the cave that breaks out from the side of Angel Island, which is crashed into the Mystic Ruins area because Eggman broke the Master Emerald.

Welshfag, I brought my Mega-Drive over to University, playing it in the living room, my flatmate brought his friends around and they were all like "SONIC, I USED TO PLAY THIS ALL THE TIME BRUV" and played a bit before they got high and went on a night out.

I used to wonder why, but I think it comes down to how Sonic came off as cool as radical. No-offence Americans, but we think we're cooler than you. And Sonic was cooler than Mario.
And as such, kids today still wear Sonic shirts, Generations was in the top charts for months, adults still remember Sonic fondly.

100 fucking percent. This is a sentiment I see strongly here in the UK, from both kids and adults, that Sonic is better than Mario, always has been.

Whereas from what I have gathered online, it seems that Americans are the opposite, praising Mario's secure history of solid titles and seeing Sonic as a outdated tryhard with few good games

That's probably entirely because of how much Nintendo didn't give a shit about Europe since ever. Nintendo and Sega ran neck and neck in the US, so Americans have more positive opinions (and by that I mean childhood nostaliga) regarding Nintendo.

It's odd though, America produces cool things. Well, I say that, they produce corny things, but whoever says Terminator isn't cool better shut the fuck up.

Maybe it's a cultural thing.
Like, Sonic's attitude, especially in the Fleetway comics and how he was advertised here was so reminiscent of shit like Dennis the Menace or Minnie Minx.
And also because he ran around and blew robots up.

And also because the Mega-Drive's advertising campaign was just so much better in the UK. We can't stand obviously aimed at American stuff, and Sega genuinely put much more effort into the UK side.
