Dumb stupid baka newb here. Is there a reason why normals aren't consistent across characters? I'm not familiar with everyone yet but for the most part, it seems like wherever I want to aim an attack from a certain position, it just works.
For instance:
>I want to: do a quick jab and cross while standing, backdash away, then follow up with a fast crouching kick.
>I press: left punch, right punch, double tap backwards on the stick, then press down/forward on the stick + left kick to hit low
This works with characters like Josie, Kazuya (I think), Asuka, and Akuma. But then I try doing the same thing with Lili, and she does the jab/cross to backdash, but then instead of crouching to hit low, she does a stupid slow ass spin to crouch, and then instead of hitting low, she does a roundhouse kick to the chest while she's crouched. Why would she do that? That doesn't make any sense, I don't want to hit mid or high, I was aiming for a low. I already have standing punches and kicks so why is this normal getting wasted on something standing attack could accomplish?
Another problem with her is that when I'm trying to back away while kicking at them, she does some slow ballerina jumpspin to either the left or right instead of kicking. This doesn't make sense either because if I wanted to sidestep I would just sidestep. And the jumpsin doesn't even work because the opponent still hits her. These seem like such niche maneuvers that I wish it required more complex input instead of taking up space on my easy-access normals.
Other complaints I have are some of these weird spinny attacks that a lot of characters have and it just feels off. It's like they're trying to be all sneaky by making you think they're gonna hit high but then they do a spin to crouch and kick you, and it just gets kind of irritating because now I'm forced to memorize their animations instead of actually fighting them. Like they can't fight honestly and have to do all this ninja stuff and fight dirty.

Yes, but every character can crouch, stand, move forward and backward, so there should be some kind of consistency with normals imo. You start adding two button presses, then yeah go ahead and give them unique attacks there, but regular attacks should be similar as far as input is concerned. I'm saying normals should be more consistent. If it's gonna be one button press to do one punch, it should be the same way for everyone. They can make special moves for two button presses, but the normals should be familiar across the board so that anyone can jump in and be able to defend themselves without having to check each normal first in training mode to make sure it does what you want it to do. Like a jab should be a jab across the board. You wouldn't press kick to do a jab with yor fist. Therefore you shouldn't kick high when you aim for their ankles. And that's just the normals which would be one button press or one direction + one button press. Everything else is fair game, go as fancy or complex as you want, but reserve normals for the essentials. A jumpingsidestep that still gets caught in a vertical attack is not an essential.
