It's a JRPG. The combat is turn based. Your party members basically summon monsters that grant them abilities. You're a special snowflake though and can pick from like 200 of them.

And then there's the social life stuff. The game is basically timed and you go through it day by day. When you're not busy with dungeon things you'll have to live your every day school life. That includes spending time with random assholes which have backstories that you can explore and that also give you benefits for the dungeon parts.

It tries to be a classic style JRPG and that's exactly what it is, complete with some design quirks of the time (no autosaving for example).

I personally really enjoyed the gameplay - think Chrono Trigger. You have skills that will impact your position and the positions of enemies, on top of doing damage and effects. So there are combos to find that benefit from positioning changes (ie use Demi to bring enemies close together and then use a diving slash to hit them all). There's enough skill variety that I found experimenting with the skills to find good combos really fun (my favourite was Haste + Chakra + Stop and then just wailing on the enemy).

The big thing that will either make or break the game for you is its setting and tone. The entire setting is a snowy region, the OST is almost entirely piano and the story is very much about sadness and accepting loss. So a lot of people really didn't like it's monotonous presentation (especially since many people expected the variety of locations/tone of Chrono Trigger).

It's about 20 hours long with maybe 30 if you want to do the late game side content too.

Personally I really enjoyed it and hope more people try it out. I agree the launch price and digital only in the west was a bit lame though.

Tekken and nier automata go from 900p on base ps4 to 1080p with higher graphics settings. I think most western sony games usually go from 1080p to 4k.

It's like the furthest thing from SJW i've played recently. As for why no one's a fan of it, it's because the gameplay is fun, but there's not enough variety in enemy types. By which I mean, there's a solid amount of enemies but they're all 100% identical. The open world is pretty empty once you've done stuff like hunter's lodge and the hunter trials, and there's not really even legendary gear to go for. You get some purples and then you're good to go, you'll more than likely know what you want your endgame loadout to be by the time you get your first purple. The actual storyline is really boring too, it throws you all the fuck over the place, and offers 0 resolution when everything's said and done, so with any luck the DLC will remedy that but i'm not holding my breath.

It's not really memorable enough, there's not enough unique environments that are memorable (even though lots of them are pretty beautiful), there's not enough memorable characters, there's just not enough to really make your own through art. And fanfiction is gay, unless you cultivate waifushitters by the fistful they're not going to make fanfiction about it.

the game's just a solid 7/10, it's nothing to write home about, and nothing much to talk about. It's really cut and dry, and there's not a lot of mystique or lore to be discovered that isn't handed to you ouright.

I'd disagree that theres not much to talk about, I think the problem is that so much of it is hidden behind lots of barriers. I quite like collecting all the shit in games and there is quite a lot of depth to the world but it takes a lot of time to go around collecting shit to see it. Im playing NG+ now and there were whole conversation branches that I missed because I didnt do things in the 'right' order.
I really hope they improve on this in the sequel, and of course the DLC.

I've kinda started farming but kinda not in anticipation of the dlc. I have a shitload of weapons banked all with different inheritables and some with really good effect combinations with stars adn whatnot, just that none of them are high level and I need to grind until they are. I have 5 lots of gloves with TWDx2 to make a ninja build too. Basically everything ready other than the grind. I just want it to drop already so I can actually get started making all my different optimised builds without worrying they'll be redundant.

The DLC is in 10 days, it ain't worth it. Just farm up the forging materials, grind some cash and the smithing texts you think you would want if the DLC doesn't imporve the build in any way.
If the DLC makes your build redundant or you wanna make a Tonfa build, then you are good to go once you get the new texts (Basically, get the materials you would need and wait it out) You are also gonna want a metric fuckton of Divine Umbracite, for the weapon and 5 pieces of armour so focus on getting that shit asap

The lower level Umbracite is OK for using on Hobo drops, however you are gonna want enough at least enough Divine for one weapon and your chest/legs for your DLC2 competitive build. Call it 15 minimum, 30 optimal. You could probs farm enough in the time frame from now 'til the 25th

To be honest, the games get better and harder in receeding order, with the exception of the final DLC of DS3 which is both spectacularly good for what it brings and brutally difficult for 2 of the bosses it brings. Also, if you are to do the franchise backwards, the blatant shitty fanservice in the later games would actually serve as forshadowing for the earlier games, as you begin to figure out the world around you.

If you want a standalone game, Bloodborne outshines the Dark Souls series in both mechanics and story, with some aptly tough fights throughout.

Summary

>Dark Souls 3=The Corporate one. Notably easier in both difficulty and to abuse (in any one area, one can have 3 phantoms and two blues helping at any one time). Repetitive enemies and world design can quickly get old, especially with a game so linear as itself. Only 4 optional areas in the game, of which one has the invasion covenant and two others are connected to reach the hardest boss in the base game. The DLC however is a masterpiece, bringing 3 fresh ideas and 5 new bosses-3 of which are more brutal than anything in the basegame. The world is the weakest in the series, with less of a world and more of 'interconnected levels' along a set path.
