For whatever reason the archers for the Byzantine factions in AoC (Theme of Sicily/Republic of Venice) have better missile damage than equivalent units from other factions (49 vs 38), so I levied some from the Republic of Venice to use instead of my archers

You can get 5 very different campaigns outta the base game. Then the orcs, brets and vamps have different start positions. The start positions have some small unique thing for them (except brettonias) but not that different from other factions in their race.

GOD DAMN IT, I hate the way Total War has turned out.

Been playing since Medieval I and I dropped it after 2 hours of playing Rome II. I was fine when they switched to warscape. I had fun with Empire, Napoleon and Shogun II. But I just couldn't stomach Rome II combat. That's okay though, I figured I'd just skip a game and then return to the next one when they've fixed all their mistakes.

But that didn't happen. I've been playing Warhammer since last weekend and it's still the same old shit. There hasn't even been an attempt to fix any of the shit that was wrong

I'm just not having any fun with this. Combat feels like a chore. I don't want to play any of these battles. It just feels messy and chaotic. And because of this retarded blobbing it seems like tactics aren't important anymore (except for rear cavalry charges), all that matters is unit stats. And I always feel like I've fucked something up when I see the mess that every battle devolves into. There were fights that I was sure I got bloodied as hell, but at the end i realize I've lost 74 men.

And it's not like you can rely on the autoresolve system to spare yourself these battles.

Years ago I played Call of Warhammer as Vampires on very hard campaign.
Goddamn there were so many memorable battles. But one stands out in particular: holding a mountain pass to Drakenhof against two stacks of angry dwarves.
Jesus Christ that was the best battle I ever played.
2000+ angry manlets rushed the mountain I defended with my only army filled with cheap skellies and zombies. I had AI reinforcement coming from Drakenhof, some 5-6 units of skellies. Damn, that was a fucking close battle.
The mountainside was littered with corpses, Mannfred with rally and a unit of camel riding skellies were the mvps charging again and again into the flank of the dwarves and destroying their artillery while my brave skelly crossbowmen used up all their ammunition and charged straight into hammerers and slayers. A heroic fucking victory if I ever saw one.
I still regret that my hard drive died with the replay on it.
I can't remember any battle in TWW and I've played mostly on very hard and legendary. It's all the same shit. It's all a mess and it's over too fucking quickly and I play on ultra size.

Here's your starting empire army that should be all built up by turn 6.
2 FCM, 5 or 6 crossbows, your starting units, and the rest swordsmen. Disband the shieldless spearmen.
Flank with your FCMs and cav unit. The Marineburg fight is gonna be tough if you fight their army with their garrison reinforcing but you should be able to do it by focus firing your crossbows on theirs and then you can begin to flank or snipe whoever is not directly on the battle line, or shoot through holes in the battle line by that point.

I recently replayed shogun 1, now there's a blob fest since the unit actions are a spreadsheet simulation. They don't hold formation at all, when they break they go everywhere. It's a mess.
I've started the Empire campaign a dozen times at least and with that army comp all the way until I change the army, so with that very army; our 2 battle lines collide, then flanking begins.
Maybe you're trying to countercharge them and it looks messy. Every leader has the hold your ground skill that negates enemy charges so you can just sit there while you micro more important units than your cheapo swordsmen.

The problem is the AI is a little too 'smart'. it knows it can't win against your stronger stack, or your fully upgraded cities. So it just runs around looking for a weak point, some place it can raze/sack/raid.

Like wise it will only ever attack you if it has a 2 or 3 to one advantage. Which leads you into either having to fight a unwinnable battle or auto-resolving to just get through it. The auto-resolve is too strong in this game and easy to exploit. if you win through auto-resolve you take minimal casualties and can take on that second stack, you fight the battle and you end up losing half your men still have a second stack to try and fight.

I don't really know how to fix it but the campaign does have a lot of fucked balance going on.

Norsca can't make chosen. I guess you mean chaos, and you're kind of meant to take them headon, given how the order factions (humans, dwarfs) get the traits that make them more likely to form alliances when chaos arrives. I haven't seen much of the cat and mouse thing people talk about when I'm fighting warriors of chaos specifically, it's only really a problem with skaeling/varg since they spam a lot of stacks and spread them out everywhere, unlike chaos which comes at you all at once when the big waves come. But, varg and skaeling generally can't deal with level 3 garrisons since they bring a bunch of random shit along with low tier infantry which is usually not too hard to defend walls against.

Their cavalry will get massacred by Grail or Blood knights since their Dragon riders only have normal attack

The only good thing they have are melee units (stronger than Empire) and monsters (dragons and phoenix will be OP) at the cost of high upkeep (Phoenix Guard and Swordmasters of Hoeth will be as expensive as Ironbreakers and Steam Tanks)

Bolt throwers may have less range but better dps than other artillery. Their basic damage is just slightly lower than cannons and they fire much faster. And they have shotgun shots too.
