Big Guys edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

>Fire against the magic dome. Unlike other dome, it does not have the function of blocking the ceremony itself, instead it specializes in automatic counter attack function. The use conditions are also moderately loose.
Automatic counter attack is damage defense penetration fire damage. The power is randomly determined every time between 1 and 20. Luck is involved, but if you are not a high HP, you can instantly kill it, and you can expect to leave a battle if not.
Furthermore, at the time of counterattack, there is a possibility that the laboratory used by the counterattack target itself will also cause a fire and destroy. The probability decreases as the Luck balance of the counterattacked state gets higher.
Duration of the dome itself depends on additional jewels consumed. If you do not add one, only one turn will be effective.

Alright, favourite maps to play on, go!

If they're not in the base game, provide links for the newblets.

I'll always like Cradle of Dominion. It's got a good size, clear art style, variety of terrain, isn't too big, but is large enough that you can expand to a reasonable degree... Plus the regions with a bonus to magic sites really helps direct searching efforts, rather than having to blanket every area of your land with mages of every stripe and colour.

EA Ur is Pangaea with shitty troops and no blood. Which isn't very good because what makes Pangaea good is excellent sacreds and then extremely buffable Revelers and Ur has neither of that. However, in the end Earth is a really good path so on the other hand it's a workable nation, it's not that you don't have good tactics to try out.

If you like the buff playstyle, MA Pangaea (relative to EA, Panii have better paths as they have higher Earth but don't pay extra for blood, and MA Pan is a capable blood nation in MA terms). LA doesn't have as easily buffable troops (besides Stymphalian situationally: their equipment is of bronze so one Iron Bane later they can actually be very offensive with their 6 attacks per square and initial AoE destroying enemy armour) but they're capable, and in addition to their useful magic being Panii all the way, they also have premier researchers and communion mages in Centaur Sages.

EA Ulm also has decent Earth access and Nature access and their troops also take buffs well so besides EA/MA Pangaea, that would probably be the next best pick for that kind of playstyle.
>>
>>182595924
Uh actually arco apparently doesn't believe in pd so I just used scouts to take all those uncontested.
>>
>>182616113

>>
>>182615842
Pangaea sounds cool, but even though they have earth wizards (and water and blood, which is cool) they only get nature gems from their cap. I know most spells don't need gems, but wouldn't a steady supply of earth gems be necessary for the more powerful spells and items?
>>
>>182613107
>>182615842
I recommend trying EA Abysia at least once so you can learn to bloody well rush your opponents.

Turn 4 wars are something you actively aim for with that nation.

Also EA Ulm to teach you how to into magic and raiding. They're about as management-focused as a non-blood nation can hope to be.
>>
>>182617203
Most of your gems come from site searching, not your cap
>>
>>182617203
It's not difficult to exhaust even the highest of earth income with Earth Boots/Bloodstones and gems used in battle magic but on the other hand, you don't HAVE to spend gems to get something useful out of Earth. Strength of Giants, Legions of Steel, Destruction, Earth Meld etc. operate fine with E2+Earthpower (and half of MA Pan mages are native E3) and spells like Iron Bane and such like are highly efficient. By the time you reach the more important research goals using gems in larger numbers (such as Earthquake), you should have an ample supply from site searching.
>>
Furthermore, Horde must take his turn.
Furthermore, Nurgle must take his turn.

I'll be taking it back now then, Pan.

>>182620659
White Centaurs with W9 make Pangaea top5 expanding nation out of all ages (rivaled only by the likes of Bats and EA Vanheim) and it's a very economical bless given that you can take sloth 3 and imprisoned pretender without an issue.
>>
>>182621979
Is ..... Is that a F9 Bless on MA Caelum?
>>
>>182621885
Not really. Centaurs get 22 defense with W9 (+due to their recuperation, instead of becoming wounded cripples, they are almost guaranteed to get two or three stars of experience for even more) and are likely to murder any opposition before they get hit once. Moreover, once you can cast protection buffs, the value of protection from E9 decreases.

Question, how do you properly use high mobility units? Especially flying ones since what will happen is they'll outpace my infantry and get swarmed and wastefully die.
>>
>>182629989
Set the fast ones at the back and the slow ones at the front?
Otherwise, if you've got similarly quick commanders, you can set the faster troops to Guard Commander, and the commander to wait 3-5 turns and then Attack Rearmost or whatever. Hold and Attack will only wait for 3 turns, so this can buy you some crucial turns for your front liners to get into contact with the enemy.
>>
>>182629763
まあ、その日本人のウィキが良く出来た見える。しかし、内容物はちゃんと確かめたかなあ。
>>
>>182629989
Ar far as tactically mobile troops are concerned, that's often of relative low value. I must confess I'm much weaker in tactics than other parts of the game but for me at least, movement speed rarely changes how I plan the battle. It has some uses, though. For starters, it gives you some leeway in positioning the units such that they gain the first strike (sacred cavalry with W9 bless for example is effectively guaranteed to hit standard ~10AP enemies before they get hit, even if you position them by random, and understanding movement ranges is critical in scripting elephants for instance). High AP also enables units to flee from battles without taking too much losses during the rout, or chase and kill routing enemies more effectively.

Speed can be used in getting to the back lines of the opponent quickly (such as rushing a thug in the middle of its buffing sequence), or catching up to your front line after being initially deployed out of reach of enemy missiles/spells, or being told to hold while your mages buff them. Line formation causes units to move as one (being limited by the speed of the slowest unit in the group, be sure to select wounded troops with 'w' and remove any cripples if you want the line to advance faster) and can be used to prevent fliers from going in solo (Storm can also be used to the same effect: for example, I once used Storm so that I could walk W1 fliers in frozen heart range of an enemy SC with attack one turn commands), and supposing you have flying chaff like harpies or hawks for sieging forts, you might just want to use guard commander instead of letting them to fight in melee.
>>
too your durns
>>
>>182629763
Well, at least you can do really slick shit with bows of war and stone birds.
>>
>>182630990
>>182629989
Fliers can be annoying when used in conjuction with other troops, but on the other hand flying is a guaranteed first strike (Spire Hown Warriors for example might not look so great on paper with their middling at best stats, but in actuality just 20-30 of them can rout most indies instantly), it allows you to get a full surround (more of your guys fighting fewer of your opponent's troops) and attack rear/archers command can be extremely valuable (it forces all sorts of tough decisions from the opponent, like deploying mages at the range of missile fire, and failing to keep the commanders safe may allow a small force of fliers to assassinate the leaders and cause the remaining army to rout for even greater losses).

Not sure. The way natural and armor prot stack make it so that the higher they are the less you gain from combining them.

I think Moloch has highest base prot of full-slotted disc. candidates.
>>
>>182633395
I didn't see it in the manual but looking at the Internet, I found this formula for natural protection and armour stacking:

Total protection = Natural Protection + Armor - (Natural Protection * Armor / 40)

If the formula is used exactly as it is, having either 0 armor or natural protection and one or the other above 40 could in principle result in protection value higher than 40 (protection from successful parry with a shield on top of that would probably also increase the protection used in damage calculations), but realistically it goes down to 40 (for example, even Monolith Armour armour is "just" 30 and 3 from Legions of Steel would make it 33, and I don't think 40 natural protection is realistic either).

Looks like Monolith Armor+Krupp's Bracers+Bracers of Protection is 37, and Legions of Steel makes it 40. Would there be anything with body slot and more than 2 misc slots? Protection from multiple bracers stacks (3*bracers of protection and Krupp's Bracers puts Crone at 11 for example, but she doesn't have body slot).

WHAT DOES IT MEAN ASIA MAN TELL ME
IS THAT A DOMINIONS REFERENCE??
>>
>>182638297
I'm learning Japanese and I tried typing that out for practice. There's probably some errors in it, but what I was trying to say was "The wiki of the Japanese looks well made but I wonder if the contents are properly tested."
>>
>>182636330
Ashdod's Adons also have 3 slots.
>>
>>182638297
>>182638847
It's a reference to tension between the Japanese and Chinese dominions communities. The Chinese Communities (TROW and that other one) are pretty confident in being the best at dominions in the world, something they claim the developers have confirmed as apparently they work through their translators with the Chinese communities for general balance.

The Japanese think they're pretty shit hot at the game but most refuse to play outside of their own servers. The Japanese wiki is one of the most extensive on Dominions but also has a lot of personal opinion (look it up, almost every spell has some opinion on when best to use).

SO to the wiki, what this image refers to is the Chinese community doubting the contents of the Japanese wiki, it's kind of a meme, there's a bit of crossover between their communities (some Chinese players managed to get into Japanese games and wrecked shit and some Japanese play in chinese games and generally manage to pass themselves off as noobs). If you check out the Chinese community a few months back there were a few threads with titles like the one cited in the image.

Did that come across properly? there's a ton of cultural background and shit thats hard to translate going into this stuff.

This is completely made up, btw. The devs work with their friends from the Dominions community for balance, mostly folks like Maerlande and IRL friends.

Not really sure what Ur learned given that he went AI after losing chaff. It'd be one thing if they asked for advice on how to beat the stuff that the more experienced players were using. But if you don't actually try to figure out what spells you need to use and apply them, you won't get better just because you saw your little army get crushed

I'm going AI next turn. The game's too slow, and Malakal's position is too strong for me to do anything meaningful. If I start killing my neighbors, he'll take the thrones, so it's too late for that.

TC is being retarded and has literally nothing on his throne while Malakal is 2 provinces away from it. Sauro is eating salva no monkey!, but by refusing to attack Malakal he's basically postponing his inevitable death. Everyone else is either dead, AI, or irrelevant.

I blame the original player for shit expansion and a subpar build, but that's basically it. Probably should've attacked someone else instead of Yomi, but I didn't know Malakal is playing Agartha by that time.

Major battle this turn. Occurred one turn from Ochrekan's capital. Ochrekan lost this one hard, but he's not totally out of the game; still has five forts up, not counting his capital.

Unlike the Cannum-Nurgle battle, the combat was a slugfest. His Oreseekers spammed Magma Bolts, his Rustminer tried to get clever with Curse of Stones, his Frostbound cast Acid Rain a few times, and his Ancient Jadehulks cast self buffs. However, he was relying on his Jadehulk sacreds to carry the day for him. They did not.

Forces of Ochrekan, in the same order as the screenshot:
420g
140g
(Personal gems:
6 Earth)
235g (cap-only, sacred, E9N9)
(Equip. cost(assuming Hammer):
8 E-gems
4 W-gems

(Equip. cost(thug1, assuming Hammer):

(Equip. cost(thug2, assuming Hammer):
7 E-gems
4 W-gems
8 N-gems)
(Equip. cost(general, assuming Hammer):
7 E-gems
4 F-gems)
55g
(Equip. cost:
3 D-gems)
320g (slowrec cap-only, sacred, E9N9)
2025g
120g
5100g (sacred, E9N9, cap-only)
sum:
9550g
38 E-gems
12 W-gems
24 N-gems
4 F-gems
3 D-gems
losses: total (retreat was cut off)

Forces of Meissa, listed in the same order as the screenshot:
45g
260g
3515g
(Personal gems:
8 Earth)
620g (cap-only slowrec)
260g
-180g
120g
-96g
84g
-48g
969g
540g
-180g
3136g (sacred, N9)
-64g
800g (sacred, N9)
-40g
40 W-gems
-35 W-gems
120 E-gems
-40 E-gems
sum:
10349g
128 E-gems
40 W-gems
losses:
608g
35 W-gems
40 E-gems

It turns out that I brought more gold and gems to the fight, but I hold that the Jadehulks are underpriced so it was really just gems. Either way, having more mages certainly helped things. At least Nurgle and Ochrekan, being neighbors, can commiserate over their experiences and possibly come up with better strategies than taking a duel-bless and hoping their sacreds will carry them the whole game.

Speaking of, an update on Patala-Bowl

Patala, as mentioned, blew a few hundred gold suiciding units into a random group of Bats. Arco continues to focus elsewhere, Ghosts seem to be pulling out, I lack UW scouts so I cant say for sure. C'tis has consolidated its forces on two forts, leaving one exposed and Giants continue to summon Pale Riders on their cap, doing little else. Should be an interesting fight when they do their last charge, I'm interested to see if either C'tis or Xilbaba have researched suitable counters.

They have no prot, but have enough defence and physical damage resistance to shrug off most blows. A lot of hp and the usual elemental thing when they get smaller when brought to some hp. 3 AP 28 damage attacks that hit more often than not, and poison aura. They're also mindless, so not charms or soul slays or shit, and they're blind, so casting darkness means they'll get an advantage over non-darkvision troops. Also, fog warriors and/or quickness makes them a nightmare.

Possible counters include killing the mages or routing them, like drowning the battlefield with insects from creeping doom and casting wrathful skies while you buff your army with lightning resist buffs, then maybe casting foul vapors if enemy mages are not poison resistant.

I haven't looked into MA C'tis but I'd wager it's Erf Snek. >>
>>182724035
>>182724325
I noticed the damage resistance and lots of attacks, but missed the poison aura. Abysia used to wreck me with that fire aura in singleplayer games at first, but I imagine throwing a poison resist spell does the trick. I imagine the living mercs are pretty tough with earth and water defense buffs on

I take offense to that one. Only reason I'm not doing too well is because I am fighting Atlantis and Ulm at the same time.

So, hey, anyone wants to take over Vanheim in Earth Attack? They're one of the strongest nations in game for sure, but Agartha just rekt them in one of their thrones (and is close to winning the game, apparently), as shown here >>182723553 and the player is too butthurt about that to carry on.

Let me know here or on discord, if you're interested. If no one wants to sub, Van will be AI next turn.
>>
>>182745181
If Van goes AI there is no reason to continue the game, since Malakal will be able to grab their throne easily, so if that happens just wrap it up.

My throne is in my cap circle, and I have infinite wolfworks in making, but I think you just don't understand the gravity of the situation. You literally can't stop his snowballing now. Imagine every province having 15 magma children and 5 mercuries, and that's just for raiding parties.
>>
Are there any comprehensive introductory guides for dominions that are generalised, going over stuff like what magic elements and schools are good for what and which spells are common staples to counter certain things, like those high evo fire spells for wiping out entire armies of chaff etc?
>>
>>182745583
No, there's nothing comprehensive, and even national guide can be debated to death. There's a beginner's guide on the wiki, but it's very barebones. Just read the manual, play some SP, and ask shit in the thread.

They are worse than size6 water elementals but since you can summon them in rituals and you keep them they are better to buff.

Plus having 53 water elementals would require like 26 mages in battle or so.

1 less attack and no fire resist, but more hp. If we're not talking about fighting UW, they're comparable. And against chaff poison cloud is more effective than an extra attack.
>>
>>182748846
And +8 str. Pretty big deal for armor-piercing attacks.
>>
>>182748846

You mean less hp since one form less right?
>>
>>182749247
Living Mercury seems to have a tad more even with all forms combined, I noticed the same thing and checked
>>
yeh, on land mercuries are overall better than W elementals - tankier (more hp/form but fewer forms) and generally more damaging, since against low hp targets their poison clouds are impactful and against high hp targets, their extra damage is really nice. The only downside they have in comparison is really the fire resistance
>>
>>182748846
>against chaff poison cloud is more effective than an extra attack.
Hardly, poison takes too long to kill. Poison cloud 5 will mostly hit adjacent squares, and for chaff those squares will be dead next turn.

An extra attack means an extra chance to kill a unit who got lucky defense/protection rolls or took a limb hit.

>>182749247
More hp per form means they'll stay in their stronger forms for longer, which is better than high overall hp, in my opinion.
>>
>>182749970

Yea but one more for means a lot more survivability in certain cases. But I guess its close.
>>
>>182750150
They work around the same in fights, yeah.

Mercuries are mainly better because they are permanent rather than single-battle, so your enemy actually needs to kill them. Permanent water elementals would be about as strong.

>Hardly, poison takes too long to kill. Poison cloud 5 will mostly hit adjacent squares, and for chaff those squares will be dead next turn.

How are elementals supposed to kill everything next to them every turn? All attacks from one unit go into one square, so at most they can hit one square each turn. Poison aura is amazing against chaff, the poison builds up pretty quickly and is great at killing regular 10-15hp units in a few turns. One single extra attack doesn't really compare, especially given the +8 Str on the other 3 attacks.

>>

Two thrones, some forts, war with Ulm, uncertain about pretender. Probably some kind of great sage.

Is an awake great mother viable for expanding? I've been tinkering with her in singleplayer and i'm noticing that despite having absurd hit points, natural regeneration, and trample, she gets afflicted very easily, and it always seems to be a limp, too, which is especially problematic for a trampler. Should I hold her in my capital for a couple of turns to research barkskin first?
>>
>>182771975

No, she is not. Raw hp isnt enough.

You could try forging her a black steel plate but then she has enc issues.

I'd honestly be fine with Valanis, haven't played on Leaking Land so I don't know how 'good' it is.
>>
>>182811181
It's better balanced than Valanis, but it has significantly fewer connections than the more popular maps, so capitals are unlikely to have more than 3 province connections in general. This means that resources tend to be tight for both caps and forts in general. The other noteworthy things are the cluster of caves at the bottom (pretty nice for Agartha, which is almost guaranteed to spawn there), and the fact that the water is all in one river, which makes playing a water nation that isn't strongly coastal-focused like Ys extremely painful. Finally, while it doesn't have full on corner positions the way that Valanis does, the fact that it's only horizontal wrap and that there are chokepoints towards the center gives a strong defensive advantage to nations that spawn in the far upper/lower ends. All three games that I've seen on it were one by a nation spawning at the top/bottom rather than the middle, and most of the contenders in the late game tended to be from one side or the other as well.

Overall, I'd say that it's more balanced than the pretty-only maps like Valanis or Cradle/Dawn of Dominions just on account of having much less terrain clustering aside from the one cave system, but much less balanced than the domg mainstream maps like Elmokki or Pymous's stuff.

A line of mercuries/elementals only needs to kill one square each (the one in front of them) to clear every adjacent square.

If you're using a single unit against a large group of chaff poison aura will be better, but both mercuries and water elementals will die very fast when surrounded like that.
>>
>>182816705
a single mercury with an E mage to cast Iron Warriors on it is a really good raiding party. Slightly better than a water bottle

I've been thinking of picking up R'lyeh again (in both EA and MA) as a nation and I was wondering if anybody who has actually played them a couple times in multiplayer could give me some insights? The last time I played them a Pelagian took an s9 bless I think there were also like 2 other big blesses but it was a long time ago and completely ravaged me so tips on avoiding that fate would be awesome.
All the guides I read online seem to have been before the big changes or are old dom3 guides that recommend money scales and dumping production so I'd like some opinions on how good slave troopers are now that they have half upkeep. Specifically the Meteorite guards since with production 3 they seem to be adequately massable and don't suffer from early game morale problems having 12 instead of normal slaves 7 in addition to having pretty good stats for the late game. But since I'm asking about both ages I'd also like to know how useful the normal slave guardians are since I was thinking that you could use them to secure an early fort on land for EA and then use that for your amphibious not shitty fish mindblasters which would be affordable and massable with production scales. I'm aware that you could forge a bunch of inspirational + taskmaster gear but early game is my prime concern.
Looking at their lineup they do have some sacred mages with decent healthpools but no real recruitable sacreds so is a n9 e4 bless worth it for the regen + reinvig communion slaves which can also be stacked with personal regen and summon earthpower afaik? Or would an awake expander with awesome scales be a better god?
In regards to early research I was thinking of beelining it to conjuration 5 for summon water elemental and Voice of Tiamat recruiting mostly mermen slave mages until that point in time. If I'm rushed then I can summon a million billion water elementals converting pearls if need be if there is no rush then I can Voice of Tiamat with the w3 mermages.
>>
>>182817810
yeah, sounds about right. Only thing I'd add is that you probably want an awake since you still get good scales with it. Wyrm or Snake both make getting your foothold on land easier.

I did consider the awake and with e3 I could use it to forge out hammers and summon troll kings later on for turn 1 battlefield earth spells. I'm just not sure if I wouldn't be served better by big nature or if a two headed wyrm would be a better god. The 3 prod is again for the meteorite guards in MA's case not too sure if the normal armored slaves are worth it in EA since aboleths have terrible non magical leadership.

Two things -

One, stick at Cold 2. You don't get extra points for going cold2->cold3, but you do get less income

Two, I've found that 3.5 blesses is generally better than the full 4. You need more dom early for sacred production to get decent expansion, and dropping one of the full blesses to a half-bless will also let you take Luck, which is just kinda nice to have when you have otherwise trashed dom, as it'll randomly give you cash infusions and will help make sure that your freshly recruited mages are less likely to blow up, as they sometimes do with misf.

They're a very awful nation and more something to play if you want to be dickish rather than powerful, but their main strengths are being able to mass assassinate with Star Children, harass the shit out of anyone without astral mages with mind hunt, and having unbreakable chaff.
>>
>>182823604
That is why true R'lyeh players avoid direct confrontation and attempt to but fail to instead manipulate the other nations.
>>
>>182821690
The 28 hour thing after a certain time period makes sense - basically when you think 1 turn per day is fine as it's too late in the game to take double turns. It basically just prevents timer creep. I don't see the point to making it that way right away, though, since early game you can easily do doubles.

The 2 province start thing helps normalize games - you're way less likely to get boned by a bad starting position given that you have a larger surface area of adjacent provinces, so to speak. It also applies a soft nerf to the dominant early game strategies of awake expanders and supersacreds. It's a very easy change that helps make the game generally better without really any downsides other than not being a default.

>>
>>182833054
I'd imagine Fire Royalty would have a better shot at surviving with Phoenix Pyre and slightly higher HP and Earth Royalty would be more survivable still with their substantially higher HP. Then it's just a matter of killing Horrors in one or two rounds. The problem is that Horrors may have armor-negating attacks with high enough attack skill you can't count on avoiding any of their blows. There really isn't any way to avoid that besides ability to soak damage (and kill them before they kill you, Mage Bane for example would in principle be great for that task).

But honestly, if the opponent can deploy Send Horror, it's extremely risky or even futile to deploy anything thuggish on its own, especially considering horror survival kit is shit at doing anything else but assassinating other thugs/SCs (which Horrors kinda are). Just use elemental royalty as big battle casters, with overall army scripting having some countermeasures.

So far Carto Revis with R'lyeh/Ys has generated separate seas. If that happens, I'll be combining the provinces in each one so that Ys gets around 5-6 and R'lyeh gets 7-8. If the seas are combined, the water count will go up a bit, and if there's another UW nation it'll go up a bit further. There'll be other disconnected lakes, so the sea nations should have no problem getting plenty of coastal and even water provinces when they push inland.

MA nations no one ever plays:

Pythium
Machaka
Abysia
Shinuyama
Xibalba
Atlantis
>>
>>182845383
Most of them for a damn good reason.
>>
>>182845383
Aby's been pretty popular recently.

Pythium was pretty popular when I first started, but it was mostly just the same two dudes who really liked it and Sceleria playing them. I think it's a pretty decent nation overall, but it kinda suffers from a similar problem as MA TC in having a gaping vulnerability to battlefield clear. Unlike TC, they also have harbingers to help them work around it a bit.

Machaka's completely awful in vanilla. Summod helps them a fair bit, but weak nations tend to get picked on and since people still have the perception of Machaka as weak, they're more likely to get ganked by opportunists. This happened both times I saw MA Machaka picked. This kinda dampens people's ability to figure out how to make them work.

Shinuyama is awkward because their mages can do stuff, but they're so expensive for what they can do. Also people seem to expand with them badly. I blame the idiot who made a youtube video on shinu expansion where literally 3/4 of the provinces he took were with his snake and advised recruiting only the mini goblins for expansion.

Xibalba is just super map dependent. Have a cave system without Agartha? Enjoy your excellent mages. Have a forest cluster? Enjoy turbo expansion and dosh to go with your bloodhunting. No caves or forests? Lol, frogs.

Atlantis is absolutely awful at fighting on land compared to the other UW nations of the era, including Pelagia. You want E buffs? You're paying 275 g for an StR E2 mage. They have strengths, with tanky acid storm casters, magic phase movement, and huge living waters, but it's much harder to leverage those strengths than it is with say, MA Pelagia which can choose to get its acid storm mages, its astral mages, or its RoS/earth buff/communion mages whereas Atlantis is random dependent.

It's true though. All these nations are relatively unpopular for a number of reasons.

EA Ulm is lame compared to both most other EA nations and to its MA incarnation.

Kinda same for EA Caelum, though less drastic.

EA Machaka is mostly just assumed to be lame because of MA.

Helheim is just lame compared to Vanheim.

Ur is just lame in general.

EA R'lyeh and Therodos are both very frustrating to play.

LA Arcoscephale is literally the most boring nation in the game.

LA Pythium is a nice nation based on Kristoffers religious studies, unfortunately he forgot to make it playable.

LA Man is actually an ok nation, but I guess people consider it too vanilla.

LA Abysia has the overall Abysmal reputation working against it, plus LA has better blood nations.

Devils are mediocre as far as demon summons go. Top tier summons are storm demons and demon knights. Mediocre are devils, fiends, and frost fiends. The rest is low tier for demons but still very good compared to most units.

Demon knights are what elite cavalry wishes it was plus fear. Storm demons have AN attacks and are ethereal elites.

Some people swear by fiends of darkness though. I never fully understood it, but has something to do with stealth.
>>
>>182862207

Fiends are solid but obviously a tier lower than demon knights and storm demons. They have their use as a generic B summon plus you get more of them from the mass summon.

Can't go bad with a flier demon with solid stats.
>>
Fiends serve two roles - they're stealthy, so you can send them with vamp lords or whatnot and dip out of magic phase attacks when raiding and secondly they take buffs incredibly well. With darkness + Rush of Strength or Bloodlust, they wind up with 2x 21 damage magic attacks at 15 attack and you can add more buffs on top of that to make them even better.

I'd still rather have storm demons for anything except a specifically anti-lightning army of mechanical men or similar and I'd rather have demon knights against enemies susceptible to fear auras, but fiends are actually more killy while being cheaper and more readily available than frost fiends or devils.

Nothing, they are one of the oldest nations and back then the lore was less established in tone. Same as Caelum (who only got Zoroasterized much later).

Before Jewish nations, Ragha and Ur were a thing, Abysia kind of filled the niche of "Middle Eastern" nation. Some people suggested they are based on djinns (people made from fire in Arabic folklore) and with Yazidi overtones (since they were historically accused of demon worship)

Assuming you use summod, Malaya Druzhina was buffed and is now actually usable. Regarding your very first expansion party, just buy as many extra spearmen as you can on the first turn, send them out withyour prophet and hope for the best.

Extra pro tip: hire a Eparch on turn 1 and send him with your initial party too. This way with your prophet you get two Smite casters to tip the scales in your favor.
>>
>>182887608
And after that, just Malayas and Black Hoods in skirmish formation set to attack/fire archers?
>>
>>182887856
I wouldn't bother with Black Hoods, just buy as many Malaya Druzhinas as possible.

So the thing with water ele spam is that even if you hit it first, you win one or two fights with it. Oceania's base water income isn't actually great, and it's hard to maintain income outside of your cap + first fort since Pelagia can take your provinces with 5 knights.

What that means is that you can win one or two fights and then still lose the war, since they'll have as many knights as you have elementals and then will be able to add elementals of their own once they catch up while still having knights.
>>
>>182927120

>>
>>182929067
Pelagia is just really strong and this is only compounded in MA by blessed triton knights being murder machines compared to every other UW nation.
>>
>>182929560
It's more that UW troops in general kinda suck so on the rare occasions that a good unit shows up, it wrecks face. Like Mermidons are as elite as they get, and they're not even that special on land. When magic comes online, land nations can fight UW fine just by using generically good units like ghosts and living mercuries since UW troops in general just can't compete.

Aquatic MM2+ (can't be modded), make UW breathing gear much cheaper (summod already does this), make aquatic troop->land available (can't be modded), buff UW troops in general, make more spells that work UW (ME does this, although the kelp dudes may be a bit too much right now), make more existing spells work UW that currently don't (battlefield clear is important), remove the slashing/bludgeoning attack nerf completely so that there's more weapon variety
>>
>>182937185
Make aquatic troops land available? What do you mean by this? You want like an army wide Amulet of the Fish?
>>

An army-wide Amulet of the Fish, make the troops less shit, and make aquatic/amphibious act as a 'water survival' or whatever to allow units to move more than a single province underwater.
>>
>>182938697
There's gear that lets you move land troops underwater, but atm it's impossible to give land-breathing to aquatic units, just commanders

>>

Injecting yourself with vaccines helps develop the necessary level of autism.
>>
>>182942778
Watch a youtube tutorial on the UI, pick a simple nation to learn, then practice expansion with that nation.

Read the manual and use the mod inspector to look up spells/units/items.

Most people seem to recommend starting out with Niefelheim or EA C'tis. There's a good amount of guide content on Niefelheim anyway.
>>
>>182943109
>Niefelheim or EA C'tis

Neither of these is good for beginners though.
>>
>>182943109
I'd probably suggest something like MA Abysia or MA Agartha to start out with. They have relatively straightforward strategies, with more nuance as you begin to understand the game more, but they aren't necessarily going to teach you bad habits like a blessrush Pangaea or Niefelheim will.

EA Fomoria is the best nation to learn with, desu
>>
>>182944453
None of the giant nations are desu. I'd say yeah MA Agartha or any age Caelum to get basic expansion and basic battle magic down
>>
>>182944981
Fomoria's battlemagic is easy, their mages don't die as easily to stray arrows, their expansion works with or without a bless, they have a variety of options in relatively few paths, they have stealth if you want to use it, thuggable druids, battlefield clear, access to underwater and big magic without needing to design a pretender for it

They're honestly the perfect learning nation just on account of the fact that you can try out a bunch of stuff with them and aren't screwed at pretender design.
>>
>>182945104
>mages don't die to arrows
teaches bad habits, need to keep your mages out of the way
>no brainer expansion
also teaches bad habits, newbs gotta learn how crushingly shit humans are
>formoria's battlemagic is easy
So's Caelum's and Agartha

They're a very, VERY good nation, which is precisely why you shouldn't train with them, because otherwise you get used to just steamrolling things with minimum effort and you don't really learn the game
>>
>>182946926
Their expansion isn't nobrainer compared to either of the two nations you listed, what are you talking about? Have you literally never played these nations? Both of the nations that you listed are good too. I'm having serious trouble believing that you're serious now.
>>
>>182946992
Caelum's can be no brainer if all you do is spam spire horns, but what about Agartha is no brainer? You either have to bless shard guards or...that's it really. And neither of them are anywhere near as good as Fomoria, one of the best nations in the game. I'm having serious trouble believing that you're serious now too.
>>
>>182947065
>You either have to bless shard guards or...that's it really
>but what about Agartha is no brainer?

r u o k
>>
Also Fomoria's top tier in that they have a great toolkit and a plethora of options. A new player can't just steamroll with them - they need to learn to use magic to do that. This makes them perfect for learning the game because you have so many different things that you can try. It's not like EA Abysia where you survive to midgame and then face the "Oh, sorry, your nation build just can't handle that" problem
>>
how do i get started in this game, fuck hell
>>
>>182947287
Just pick a nation and we'll tell you what to do jesus christ you bunch of fucking autists
>>
>>182947234
>Man this game looks fun, I'm gonna try it
>What the fuck is this UI
>What the fuck do any of these buttons mean
>What am I supposed to do
>What am I supposed to be building
>What do I do after I take these tiles around my spawn
>How do I do the magic

These are questions that a good learner nation should be answering, rather than dumping them into the deep end of a poorly documented game and expecting them to absorb the breadth of options from that.
MA Abysia is relatively good for this in my opinion. They're not super competitive, but they're easy to learn and straightforward, while still allowing you to do some different things.
You have three options of troops - shieldy humans, shieldy Abysians, and hitty Abysians - and two options of mages - fire dudes and blood dudes - all with some minor variations. You then have two options of magics which align with the two types of mages you can recruit, so if you want to use battle magic, you get the fire dudes, and if you want to use blood magic, you get the other ones.
Your expansion isn't amazing, but it's not dogshit, so better tactics are fairly visible when you do the 'correct' thing, and you don't pick up shitty habits like relying on oppressive sacreds. Fireball (and Pheonix Power) come into the game early on and don't require obtuse situations to be useful, so you learn to position your mages appropriately pretty quickly. It's all about as simple and intuitive as a nation can get, everything does what it says on the tin.
>>
>>182948420
>so better tactics are fairly visible when you do the 'correct' thing, and you don't pick up shitty habits like relying on oppressive sacreds
Except MA Abysia's starting army can be left unscripted and walk into heavy cavalry. It's exactly the opposite of something that lets you learn normal expansion. It's also a nation that can leave you fucked over if it's your first MP game because you didn't build a blood economy and now you literally can't fight a dude that doesn't die to fireballs and heat auras.
>>
but really, for single player the best nation is just whatever has the most interesting lore to the person getting started
>>

Expansion is easy to learn, especially since you can practice it solo. If you want to get better at expansion you can do it as much as you want.

An easy expansion means less chance of getting crippled, which is especially important for a new player who will have a lot of trouble playing from such a position.

I asked earlier about how to differentiate a hindu nation from the chimps and I think I have an idea of how to go about it now. I'm thinking a bunch of semi-divine dudes got enslaved by a bunch of animal headed demons, who themselves are commanded by Asuras who have beef with Yakshas and Raksasas.

Kindeva slaves are basically humans but they dont eat and are blue, Kravyads are basically non sacred Palankasha and make up most of your elite dudes and mages, Gajasura are minotaurs on crack and Asuras are like Yakshas but trade awe for two more arms and maybe berserk or something.

Centaurs have a decent health pool and get hit infrequently, so N9 works pretty well.

>Not trading for pearls to empower a Pan to make a moonvine bracelet
>Not putting all on a 5N Pan

It's like you're not even trying

Turmoil 3 is foolhardy and a trap because even with Panii making great leaders and you having ample N income to summon Sleepers, it's difficult to mobilize all of them, never mind usefully. However, you still get plenty with T1 or neutral order scales, enough to fill the strategical and tactical niches they are useful for. The question, I think, is between O3, T1 and T0, and that's up to personal preference.

Note the qualifier 'pretty easy'. Thistle mace -> treelord's gives you N7 basically free. Armor of thorns bumps you up to N8 and is easy with a good blood economy. Getting to N10 requires additional steps for your meme.

Are you thinking of EA Pan? MA has N3 +thistle +twisting thorns for N5 total, not enough for staff of gaia.

Having a dormant with N5+ also allows you to rush the common mother oak/gift of health strategy. Without that you need to get over double the research for mother oak, and gift of health isn't available until lategame.

Half of all Pans in MA are N4. Can boost up to N8 easily.

I did one with T3 once. I remember dozens of lost Maenads sitting around as the Panii that spawned them filled up on leadership spots
>>
>>182955968
N9, actually, assuming you can get copper hands and moonvine bracelets.

Afaik half of Pans are N4 and half are like E3/E4, and Pans can spawn as N5 (I'm pretty sure). Even if they can't, just use thistle mace and armor of thorns to get N6 for tree lord staff, then you've got N7 and you're golden

>it's a solid bless with more lategame applications
Generally speaking that would be true but it's the premier Nature nation we're now talking about. Conversely, W9 synergizes with Pan's ability to sitesearch water but not use the gems in any useful manner, and if you happened to get to that point, Vengeful Waters synergizes with cheap temples.

>awaken treelord
>he can't make treelord staff
>he can't even wield treelord staff
wtf illfraud I paid 35 burger for this shit

If you are transforming Panii en masse (arguably the least bad long-term research strategy for EA/MA Pangaea), it's not too unlikely to get astral boost required for Moonvine bracelet. At least Winged Monkeys can grant it.
>>
>>182955968
Oops. It's still useful for early Moak/GoH, though.

>>182956202
I meant specifically the bless effects. W9 is only good for centaurs. N9 can be used for thugs and other things, if you find a way into astral.
>>
>>182956207
The name is misleading, Treelord's Staff isn't actually a staff of a treelord, it's a staff made from a treelord.

What units exactly would you put a Shroud on?

I can kinda see it on Ice Devils in Cold dominion (although you won't be kicking yourself for having to use Hydra Skin armor if you want regen from chest slot) which is something Pangaea that gets ahead would always try to do in lategame, but as far as I can see, after that point we're entering some absurdly niche territory like getting Adepts of Iron Order very early on in the game such that they can properly sitesearch and then summon golems. Which is in principle possible, but virtually irrelevant in evaluating virtues of various blesses.

Following the mythology, they should probably have a craft bonus too.
