There has always been something that bothered me about demon fusion. I never really knew what it was about it that made me feel so uneasy until I played Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army (great game, please play it if you have not). Before fusing your demons together they need to be completely loyal to you, and before the fusion happens you get a little piece of dialogue from the demons. Most of the time this dialogue is pretty quirky. But sometimes you can feel a little bit of hesitation from some of the things the demons say before they get fused. Is fusing really as wonderful and positive as almost every game in the Megaten series portrays it at? When I play Nocturne and I spend hours of my time trying to make the perfect Metatron, or Beelzebub, am I ending the lives of dozens of demons in the process? Aren't the minds of the demons who produce these stronger, tougher demons completely lost? Maybe you could argue that Pixie from Nocturne is an argument against this logic but what if she only retained her memories when entering the room that powered her up (Lucifer fuckery)? Some food for thought to get you guys thinking about your next fusion. Whenever I fuse my demon friends together I make sure to thank them and ensure that their time on this planet is not forgotten and I hope all of you can start doing the same.

If I can remember right, it was actually almost the exact same in Devil Survivor. The demons were all very excited to be fused, but sometimes they would exhibit melancholy over leaving you. The MC's in DeSu1 actually pondered over the nature of fusion, specifically wondering if demon fusion was 1+2=3 or 1+2=12. In the end though they just hand wave it away as voodoo magic mumbo jumbo and forget about it.

In my mind, I theorize that demons retain the consciousness of their materials while also gaining the consciousness (and cultural memory) of the result. Ultimately however, older consciousness take the back seat and are lost to make way for the newer ones. This explains why they seem both happy and sad to be fused, as well as skill inheritance, and the sane-yet-bipolar behavior they sometimes exhibit.

I don't know, that interpretation always felt the most natural to me.

I did. Beat the PSP version on Hard. Pretty fun game. Good dungeons and cool music. Demon negotioation can be annoying at times, though. Also, if you want to beat the extra bosses added to the PSP version, you need to raise your Ag at least to 40 to have a chance of outspeeding them.

There's also walkthroughs on LP archive and gamefaqs if you get lost.

I wish the BGM in the PSP version sounded more like the original Saturn music.

Atlus needs to make more games with real-time combat systems. I loved Maken X and the Raidou games, so I think if they really tried, they could make a hack slash/beat em up whatever type of game that could compete with DMC or Bayonetta. What say you?

Btw, I'll always be certain that Retro stole the first person combat from Maken X, because if you played both Maken X and Metroid Prime, then it's pretty obvious, especially since both games were designed to play with a single analog stick (MP only uses the secondary analog for weapon switching), and both games' combat revolves around dashing/strafing around your enemy while locked on, and also both games use a trigger button for free-look. There are four new bosses - King David, Leviathan, Enoch and Squall. To my knowledge, they don't have any unique designs, but share sprites with some Zoma forms from Soul Hackers.

To unlock them, you have to stand on the tile before the final boss room in the Ancient Ruins first. After you do that, you can find them in one of the rooms in the Iikai section of the Yarai-ku Sewers (that small location with powerful demons you can go to after you beat Hokuto Seikun and Nantou Seikun). After you beat one of the bosses, you have to exit the sewers and re-enter from the world map for another boss to appear.

On your first playthrough you fight one boss at a time, but on the second playthrough you fight two bosses at once. Every one of them have ridiculous stats, so you have to either grind and fuse some high-level demons or raise your Ag to more than 40 (one of the drinks at Innocence bar helps a lot) and use Attack Mirror or Tetrakarn.

That's the biggest problem with SMT. The Chaos option is always an attractive option since the player character will always be the strongest thing in the universe by the end of the game. You always deal with the game's narrative with violence and using your strength, which is always a chaotic way to resolve conflict. This makes Chaos always kinda right in the end since even if you side with Law or Neutrality, you always bring it about in a chaotic way
