Solo CB was ahead of HBG. Online LBG and HH were mid to high tier. Solo SnS and hammer were tied, and online hammer could also benefit everyone with fatigue and KO (while status SnSes were pretty weak), so provided you were careful about FF it was probably better than SnS. And bow and to a lesser extent DB are kind of wildcards, they aren't universally good but they're comparable to IG and GS in the hunts where they are good (and bow is GL to HH tier in the quests where it sucks). Plus your "low tier" covers a broader range of times than all the other tiers combined iirc. SA, GL and HH kinda form an extra shit tier.

Usually not really, but the weapons tend to have decent raw so it's just icing anyway. A few monsters take enough dps from it that if you kept them poisoned the whole hunt and did no other damage they'd die sub-10.

bow users: should I charge to lvl2 and use powershot (for a lvl3 shot) or charge to lvl3 and use powershot (for another lvl3)?
I read its better to charge to lvl2 and then powershot if you don't have fastcharge.

If you have enough time/an opening coming up and can get to 3 and do two 3s, do two threes.

If you only have time for one shot and especially if your window is closing anyway, charge to 2 and then cancel into a powershot by pressing A. This lets you fire a powershot without firing a normal shot first.

It doesn't add many. Two are edited gypceros models with brachydios abilities, so those are fairly shit, and one is a skeletal fatalis crossed with an alatreon, so also shit.

Caeserber is a great lowrank monster that would work well in mainline imo. It's a beast like lagombi/volvidon/arzuros, but has its own moveset.

There's a lightning bug that looks really cool and has a neat moveset. It does the khezu aoe around its body, which is annoying, but otherwise it's pretty cool. About the size of Seltas.

Baelidae is a spiny crab spider with a skull pattern on its back. It's more mobile than nerscylla, doesn't do the up and down bullshit that means you have to spend thirty seconds switching between top and bottom every five seconds of actually hitting it like scylla, and its web traps make your feet stick instead of snowmanning you but with webs. No weird shit where it distorts its body like nerscylla's bite or "animations" where it turns 180 degrees in one frame. It does do a crazy webslinging charge, which is faster and more damaging than the mainline spider's.

Tartaronis (is how it's spelled iirc) is a giant desert terrapin that flies on clouds of swirling wind that kick up sandstorms, really great design but lame fight (like most huge monsters). Think akantor but it can fly.

Estrellian, the flagship, is an excellent monster that I'd love to see in mainline. Skeleton is similar to mizutsune and some frontier monsters. Has three phases, only "downside" is a kind of neat but potentially frustrating feature which is that you HAVE to "chip" its tail in the brief first phase to be able to cut it in the third phase. Like zinogre it has a symbiotic bug that empowers it, but these bugs have fire powers and attach to its body so their wings form neat irridescent dragonfly armour. Has one iffy animation (which is almost 1:1 ripped from zinogre) where it spins in the air, otherwise there isn't really anything about this monster I don't like.

Ive actually been working on something on paper. The answer is simple. While the hunters and environment are 2D you make the monsters 3D. That way flyers can make use of their mobility and ground monsters can be animated a little easier. Certain parts get exposed on the attack plane depending on the stance of the monster, and hunters can dodge up or down ledges in leu of side steps.

The rest are subspecies, which are about as hit or miss as mainline subs. It does include one of the coolest frontier monsters though, which I can never remember the exact name of but it's a giant scorpion with purple crystals growing on its tail and claws. It also has kind of an annoying break, which iirc was carried over from frontier and probably inspired estrellian's.

This is estrellian fully decked out in bugs, and a near-whiff on one of the lance hunter arts.

They weren't as bad as in X, they were basically exclusively a crutch because they only built up when you took damage or directly iframed an attack, not when you hit shit, and had big meters, so usually the monster would die before it charged even if you played solo. So they were there for if you were taking too long and hitting too much, to give you an edge in the form of an attack that was like ten attacks in one. Biggest exceptions were the HH abilities, one of which made it do godly KO for a while after by just waving it in the air even if your hits didn't connect, and a similar one that made monsters trip by pounding the ground (which was mainly used for shen gaoren, which was plenty long enough to actually proc the art, plus Estrellian's HH had a song to proc them faster iirc).

However, I've heard that since I stopped playing it has changed to reflect X's HAs.

I did. I played a lot of it.

Like I said, I've been told they changed how they worked since I played, but when I played they built up VERY slowly over time (it would take about 25 minutes iirc) and would get a bit extra every time you iframed or got hit. The iframing giving meter might have been a result of lag though.

What is the hardest, regular monster?
Not counting subs or elders.

I like monster hunter. A lot. I've got 4k hours of this shit. Ive played this game more than I've played anything else. But it's not the game I wanted when I picked it up on PSP. I wanted to fight dragons as a medieval knight. MonHun is more about optimizing armor sets, looking at damage charts, and memorizing attack patterns. This is fun. I wouldnt spend thousands of hour doing it if it wasn't fun. Dragon's Dogma is very close that game I imagined so long ago, but theres too much of that DnD dungeon crawler feel. I love that feel, but it's still not what I'm after. I dunno. Maybe with the damage numbers and easier set mixing, World might be that game. I'm just so fucking burnt out on the routine you know. I never used an armor mixing tool until Gen. I used to try and figure it out on my own but now I don't care anymore. I still like action games. I still like RPGs. But for once I want a fight with a dragon to be all im focusing on. I want to enjoy the fight for its own sake and not worry about all the frame data and RNG stuff. I just want to fight.

I have no idea what armour to make. I've been using low rank Ceanataur with a +4 Expert charm and a couple of decorations for Critical Eye +3 and Razor Sharp for ages now. I'm well into High Rank, 9* Village quests. I'm currently using blast dual blades and a pair of elemental longswords (one thunder, one ice) but I might go back to a raw greatsword later, all Brave style. What would /mhg/ make?

also in my experience the best time to bomb nibelsnarf is when he's doing the attack where he charges at you then does a 180 and charges you again several times
dodge out of the way of the first charge then place your bomb, then when he turns and charges again stand by the bomb and then dodge or superman dive away at the last second
palicoes can be a useful distraction early on but once you learn the timing of the monsters you'll be able to know when you can afford to drink a potion/sharpen/whatever without getting hit
