Glitch hunting, routing, strat development, practicing, testing, running multiple categories, running multiple games, TASing, ILs, etc. etc are all a part of speedrunning, and all things many speedrunners participate in.

Even in a single category, the experience changes wildly between when you first learn it to when you become an expert at it. On top of general improvement, the meta is constantly evolving and you never stop learning new things.

Then there are the whole recording, streaming, pc build, console collection and retro gaming aspects, which are entirely different hobbies in their own right.

Anything can sound ridiculous if you reduce it to its lowest common denominator. This is a form of false dichotomy (black and white thinking).

They're both impressive in different ways.

Full runs take more time and work to get good at, but ILs require a far greater understanding of the nuances of the mechanics and engine. Cheese05 couldn't move as fast as Toast or Xiah no matter how much he grinded an IL because he just doesn't understand the game as well as they do, but Cheese is still pretty fast and much more consistent at executing slightly slower things.

the ranking system for MMZ3 is a bit complicated; you're basically given a score after every stage with a few criteria:

Mission% (This is usually 20p for just completing the stage, but many stages have criteria such as "press x amount of switches" or "destroy x parts", which is when the % completed comes in)
Time (20p, Self-explanatory, stage dependent)
Enemies (15p,Stage dependent, which means you have to think up an enemy route for every stage)
Damage (15p, constant. Usually 3 hits and you go down 2 points, and so on.)
Retry (15p. If you die, you lose 3p. Death is VERY punishing, since it fucks up the enemy counter for some reason I haven't found out--which means you can potentially lose 18p from just dying once)
Elf (15p. If you use a consumable cyber elf--a helper--you lose 3p. The elves I need are not consumable, so I don't ever need this.)
At the end of every stage, you're given a total of your points for that stage, and then an average based on the scores you've gotten from past stages. Your ranking is based off of this average. 100p-96p is S-rank, 95-86 is A-rank, and so on. Because of this, there's some leniency on how much I can fail in a run--though the most I'll fail in is damage.

As an aside, because death is so punishing, I have to save at 3 stages that have instakill spikes. The run is lenient otherwise, but I can't really save much from a death.

I'm not really into speedruns and I don't speedrun games myself, but this seems to be a good place to ask: does every speedrunner ends up drowning in their own salt?

I remember watching Distortion speedrun DaS3 after its release and it was fun, he was chill, talked with the chat and seemed upbeat. Fast forward to today, I finished Nioh and decided to watch a speedrun of it to see the broken stuff I had missed and Distortion has the WR. I watched the video and he seems like a completely different person, can't stop cursing at the game because of bad RNG and just seems all around pissed, like he's not enjoying the game at all

Is this the eventual end of every person that speedruns?

It is punishing, but I've got it down enough to where I won't die unless I get cheesed. The saves are for safety, so even if I do die, I only lose like a minute or so tops.
What makes it difficult is that there's not many resources for me to study on (there's somewhat of an S-rank run on youtube that I can find, but it's really unoptimized), so I have to make up a lot of stuff and look up the (rankless) TAS for help. I also have to decide if I want to fight Phantom, since he's an optional boss but gives you a great tool after beating him. Though, if I fight him, it'll have to be its own category of speedrun.
I'll probably stream this saturday at 7PM EST. I'll drop a link, sure. It'll be practice of the first half of the game (up to copy X) so I can have something to look at and improve on.

Yeah, I don't mind in the long run. This is my first speedrun, so I need to learn this stuff anyways--it is rewarding to route stuff out and then succeed after multiple attempts in the end.
As an aside, I wanted my first speedrun to be Metaknightmare Returns, but I had no way of recording myself to improve--or submit times--which sucked.
