It wasn't our fault.
About 90% of vg got pruned because some FAGGOT made about 50 threads of pokemon porn

To embark or not to embark, that is the question.

Which continent do you think I should embark in?
>>
Explaination:
>Bui came back to /vp/
>has been spamming it with furry porn every day for the past week to try and get the board deleted
>decided to spam /vg/ instead today
>created a bot to start enough threads all at once to push nearly the entire board off Page 10
>only about 15 or so threads survived because they were super active at the time
send help

I think the red "~" on the northern continent should be fun.

Does Toady give forewarning of a release like the week before it happens or does it just come out of the blue?

a bit of both. I don't recall him announcing a firm release date beforehand, but usually you can tell it's close by his devlogs, as he'll describe cleaning up a bunch of minor bugs and polishing the version up

How come happiness never matters anymore?
I've never seen dorfs that weren't either "Fine" or "Quite Content".
My migrants that sleep on the floor, constantly cancel jobs from despairing due to evil weather, have no temple no tavern and no library etc etc all are just as fucking happy as my better forts. Even the guy whose baby died and rotted away was still Fine.
Never a tantrum ever.

Apparently the satisfaction from improving 12 different combat skills outweighs all that by far.

How much does alcohol improve mood, anyway? "Ecstatic" implies it's quite a lot. Does it wear off after the alcohol effects do, or does it last like any positive thought?
>>
>>182300694
Do they have booze? Drinking makes dwarves constantly happy.

Even if you make them drink water, dwarves are just more emotionally stable now than they were before the feels rewrite. They're still annoyed if they have to sleep on the floor, and if you keep piling dead babies on them they'll eventually snap, but tantrum spirals are a lot less common.

Pre-honeymoon suites to make them get married
Taverns and free time for friends
Then, have them all get in a room and drown, and forbid the bodies.
Have the victim have a burrow of his own in there.
Nothing but a well, a stockpile of plump helmets, and large amounts of rotting, miasma producing corpses of dwarves the victim knew.
Should work, I would guess.

I think it's not so much that he's lazy as that he thinks he's not allowed to trade now. I'd try toggling the "trader requested at depot" option to see if that creates a fresh "trade at depot" job for him to take. If nothing else works, you can always try sending someone else to trade by toggling "only broker can trade" to "anyone may trade".

All right so what you're gonna want to do is lure them to the same square, maybe a volcano, get some mood lighting, a few corpses, maybe a really fucking big waterbed (just trust me). After that just wait a bit and nature will take its course.

I'm >>182317183 and I'm actually serious, you can test it yourself. The larger a kingdom's population is, the greater the change that the citizens will have more diverse physical features. You can test this by creating an adventurer and repeatedly clicking randomize (within cultural parameters). You will see a difference as adventurers from smaller kingdoms will all look the same while ones from more populous nations will have a greater variety to their looks.
>>
>>182317950
I understand, but in my game there's only one tiny dwarf civ and it's minimum history generation.

probably bards who visited the goblins.

goblin bards visit non goblin sites and vice versa, and in worldgen or off-site, this works perfectly fine. however, when the actual map gets loaded in game, the goblins' [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:REQUIRED] gets called into play, meaning that all goblins instantly chimp out on people who aren't members of their entity.

you can remove the token if you want the goblins to behave better, but then the goblin bandits will become peaceful and boring like the human ones.

>>
>>182382104

That's a meme.

Truth is there's only a small group of coders that are skilled enough to really work on the core of the game. Everyone else mods items, and sometimes those get folded in mainline, but usually they're in mods.
>>
>>182384093
It's not a meme, it's true, and also, that small group of coders can't agree on anything and are always arguing with eachother, which makes development even slower.

There's also the dumb focus on "realism", I don't mind realism as long as it adds good things to the game but there are some real shit features, like filthy clothing, that should be removed.
>>
>>182384093
>Everyone else mods items
is that why the game has like ten different kinds of fedoras and vape cigs, and you encounter zombies in anime costumes?
>>
>>182384541
>filthy clothing, that should be removed

Filthy clothing was tried, and was removed to a mod. The consensus was that while it's more realistic for zombie clothes to be filthy and generate negative morale until you clean them, the implementation was tedious and unfun, and it's been taken out of core until someone figures out how to not make it a pain in the ass.

The devs attitude has always been that realism is a nice goal, but only so long as it it doesn't create gameplay that dull, clunky, or monotonous.

>>182384895

Yeah, pretty much. They generally feel that an apocalyptic game needs a lot of items, because otherwise it doesn't feel like our modern world. So generally when somebody makes a group of items that are interesting, fit the theme, and won't break anything, the devs will accept it.
It's really not a problem, unless you falsely believe that the people who make all these items could be fixing bugs in the engine instead, which I doubt.
Plus bugfixing happens constantly. A long-standing bug with removing armor that's hit me on several occasions was just fixed recently -- I'm pretty happy about that.
>>
>>182386036
>The devs attitude has always been that realism is a nice goal, but only so long as it it doesn't create gameplay that dull, clunky, or monotonous
Well they're not doing a very good job at that.
>>
>>182386036
My problem with it is that an unproportional part of the content in DDA has to do with neckbeard culture, memes and anime. No matter how you look at it, it simply isn't representative of "our modern world".

It's only a matter of time before they add even cringier stuff, like "flag of kekistan", or "kek figurine".

We don't know but since Cataclysm is set in the future the numbers can be different than those in real life, and since a lot of those katanas are actually replicas made of aluminum, and the real katanas made of steel are found in places where it would make sense for them to be there, like pawn shops and mansions, I'm perfectly fine with it.

A lot more than you'd think. It ain't just nerds that buy swords to hang on their wall.

Nope, that is the worst thing you can do. It's always, always, ALWAYS better to refactor and rework your functioning code in-place. Untangle the spaghetti one system at a time.

Very few projects survive the trip from that first line of code all the way to a working state, even just once. To do it twice is asking for a miracle. Most projects that attempt the "ground-up rewrite" fail and wind up dead, usually due to developer burnout.
It looks tempting, but it's a trap.

But yeah, the problems DF has will only grow worse as it gets larger and more complicated. I figure it eventually get him to either bring in outside help, or give up.
>>
>>182395023
With the money he gets, if he save some each month he would eventually be able to hire some professional help.
>>
>>182395023

>>
>>182395023
How many core problems actually exist and have existed for a long time as a direct result of the spaghetti code, though? The only real one I can think of is DF only using a single core, and resulting in slowdowns in old forts/populated areas. "Spaghetti code" doesn't prevent any of the things the first poster wanted.
>>
>>182395023
Word, I had to go back through and do that with my scripts, it's downright embarrassing looking through your old code sometimes.
>>
>>182395468
>How many core problems actually exist and have existed for a long time as a direct result of the spaghetti code, though?

Since I've never seen the code, I can't say. All we have is inference, and the way changes in one part seem to break strange things in other places.
>>
>>182395023
>But yeah, the problems DF has will only grow worse as it gets larger and more complicated. I figure it eventually get him to either bring in outside help, or give up.
You'd think that, but I don't think they've gotten appreciably worse in the last five years or so. And he doesn't seem too concerned about his ability to keep adding shit. I think he's more likely to die than to do either of those, honestly.
Which is not necessarily a comforting thought.
>>
>>182395468
DF being single threaded is NOT a result of the spaghetti code. That's a result of DF development having begun way, way the fuck back in the mid-to-early 2000s when multithreading wasn't really a thing. I mean, Intel released their first multi-core processor back in 2005, but it didn't really catch on until 2008, when DF had been 6 years in development.

Security nightmare if something manages to access the stairwell
Horrible accidents when someone trips
Encourages lazy use of z-levels (one thing I love about spiral staircases is that they force me to leave a couple+ z-levels between floors, you'll thank yourself later when you want to add a basement to an industry or want a fancy high-ceiling tavern)
Too efficient, and yes there is such a thing. Forts with lots of stuff in one z-level are less efficient but man are they so much prettier. Not like you NEED to save time on hauling when you have 100 migrants anyways
>>
>>182400708
>using every z-level is lazy
???
What do you also make all of your weapons and armor out of wood like elves, because, hey! Can't be too efficient at fighting, right? Using crap like iron is just plain lazy. Maybe release a couple tigers in your fort to keep your dwarves on their toes, don't want them to be too efficient after all.
>>
>>182400708
>Security nightmare if something manages to access the stairwell
Meh, if something bad somehow managed to get through my walls the my military will get rid of it, I'll hide my dwarves in a save place anyway.
>Horrible accidents when someone trips

>Encourages lazy use of z-levels (one thing I love about spiral staircases is that they force me to leave a couple+ z-levels between floors, you'll thank yourself later when you want to add a basement to an industry or want a fancy high-ceiling tavern)
Never had such a problem.
>Too efficient, and yes there is such a thing. Forts with lots of stuff in one z-level are less efficient but man are they so much prettier. Not like you NEED to save time on hauling when you have 100 migrants anyways
You lost me here.
>>
>>182401438
Using every z-level ends up with having no room to expand vertically because every other floor is on the way. Like I said, say you want to add a basement to your metalsmithing industry to store metal bars or something, if you already built your hospital one zlevel down you're boned.
Having a buffer of 2 zlevels between floors is very nice and the loss of efficiency is pretty marginal when hauling stuff.
>What do you also le elv xdf
I do embark on areas with only copper because the game is too easy yeah. If you're trying to make your game even easier, I don't know man, I don't find that fun.
>>182401640
Make your bedrooms across 10 zlevels of 20 bedrooms each: super-efficient but ugly
Make 200 bedrooms across 2 levels: A little less efficient, looks much better
>>
>>182402124
My point is that saying something is bad because it's efficient is a fucking awful argument. It's bad because it doesn't fit your aesthetics and your idea of challenge.
>>
>>182402124
I don't see what is so ugly about that but alright, It's not like one z-level isn't enough anyway, I keep my popcap at 80. And can't you just keep the bars next to the forge? It's what I do.
>>
>>182402564
If you baby yourself with only the easiest thing available you're kind of spoiling your gameplay experience yeah.
It's like advising people to just wall themselves in, or cheesing bedrooms by stuffing 200 overlapping beds in one room, or mile long dodge-me weapontrap chasm hallways.
Those work too well. That's a bad thing.
>>
>>182402742

Hey so how viable would it be to make like, a bug that uses the same symbol as a barrel, so it could hide in your barrel stockpile, and it pretends to be a barrel until your dwarves get close to it, then it attacks them by injecting them with alcohol so they die of an overdose.

Do you guys think it would actually be able to sneak around under your noses or would you notice it?

Sounds viable, but problematic. Keep in mind that if it was vermin, it would phase in and out of existence in the eyes of the player, which would make it possible but not too easy to spot. And if it was regular creature, it'd show up un the units list and your dwarves would immediately attack it. But on the other hand, if it was vermin then it would unfair since its injection is lethal yet you couldn't send your military after it. Perhaps the best solution would be to make it a nonlethal injecting vermin.

Tiles or ASCII?
>>
>>182423236
doesn't matter just don't use fag tiles
>>
>>182423236

I'm usually an ASCII guy all the way, but Dwarf Fortress' use of ASCII drives me up a wall, so I'd suggest tiles.
>>
>>182423236
Many tilesets are better but if you don't use them you can play right away when the update comes out.
>>
>>182423658
So a tileset can give me more information than ASCII?
>>
>>182406630
Is that tileset intentionally designed to be ugly?

>>182407012
There's a fair bit of micromanagement, but one trick is to build scaffolding of bridges.

>>182423236
You should probably at least try ascii before any other tileset. Also, you really don't need the "starter" pack.
>>
>>182423236

Just download Minecraft, it got way more depth and game play than this fossil.
>>
>>182423920
if you don't know what something is, just [l]ook at it
>>
>>182423920
It depends. In the end, whether it is a pixel art depiction of a dwarf or just an ascii icon, they are both symbols that mean a specific thing. You won't get "more" or "less" information, just the same stuff in a different format. The sole difference is that vanilla doesn't have any delay when an update rolls out. If you refuse to use anything but a certain tileset, be ready to have to wait a week or two (or even longer) before you can play a new iteration.
>>
Would using two weapons in the same hand hinder a a dwarf?

seems some dwarfs are wielding a silver mace and a silver hammer due to my early uniform setting.
>>
>>182423236
it's not as simple as "either-or". there's a broad spectrum inbetween, and a large range of tilesets and graphic sets that look either more more ASCII-esque or more graphicsy, while still having traits from the other.

>>182423920
it depends. in theory, it should, since the number of possible combinations of pixels in a tile is far greater than the number of letters in the alphabet, even if you separate lower and upper case.

in reality, however, I've found that most creature graphics are just pixel soups, where you can't tell a lot just by looking. you can make out the shape of a bird or a four legged animal, but that's it.

my own solution is that I use my own self-made graphics for the five main races, and ASCII for all other creatures. but whatever floats your boat.

>>182424142
this is somewhat misleading. a tileset is just a fucking picture. it isn't sensitive to the version number.

graphic sets CAN be version dependent, but only if they change the raws. otherwise, you should be able to use the same graphic set release between different versions.

Anons what are you currently doing in adventure mode? I'm rotating between two characters who live in the same town and are sheriffs. One of them is a big amazonian type with a mace, and I use her to clear out the undead, which are often decked out in heavy armor and are a bitch to deal with in general. The other is a small crossbow/swordsman who focuses on hunting monsters, usually wandering trolls, but will sometimes attack bandits that made their way up north. Together they are pretty good at keeping the local hamlets danger-free.
>>
Can I add new appearance modifiers for new body parts? I see the reference to the appearance distributions in the raws, but I don't know how/where the descriptions are stored, so I'm not sure if I can add more.

I wonder if Toady plans on adding more culture types/variables when he does proc-gen races.

>society of four-armed human sized cyclopses that live like elves but with goblin ethics

I think the proc genned races in the myth arc are msotly there just to leave behind ruins that you can explore. Although you'll probably encounter them when they're still alive, depending on your history.

As far as creatures created in the myth arc I'm wondering how existing night creatures will be affected/what sort of stuff "Spirits" as shown in one of the talks or articles way back will be able to do on release outside of magic.

Like will they actively conspire/issue tasks/challenges/punishments to people based on their alignments or will they just sorta be around casting spells.

>>182431137
You need a fair bit of climbing skill for that to work reliably.

>>182431634
In theory we already more or less have that sometimes. In practice it's so rare that you'll hardly have the chance to be disappointed by the fact that it's bugged to the point where the victims are incurably mindwiped before you can possibly get to them, even if you find them less than 24 hours after they were abducted. Also, they just wander around aimlessly near the lair rather than being actually imprisoned, but they never talk and iirc will fight you and/or crash the game.

Elven clothes are supposed to be dwarf-sized, not their fault you modded the game to make it otherwise.

Elf-sized stuff is useable by dwarves, for whatever it's worth. Wood can be useful if you don't have enough growing in your embark site (It's a much rarer problem than it used to be, but it does still happen. I tried reclaiming a worldgen fort once and found it completely treeless.) Foreign instruments can be useful if your dwarves know/learn foreign musical forms, I'm not sure how common that is. They might also just plain look fancy. Exotic animals can be good as war animals or food and, along with exotic plants, can increase the probability of your dwarfs getting access to their favorite foods.

I don't remember hearing anything about it and I think it would've been big news if he did, but I haven't had someone die of a cartilage-related infection in quite some time, despite numerous battles and plenty of dwarves dying for other reasons

Yo so I'm building a nice spot for my brave soldier who got bit by a were creature to chill for the rest of eternity. What features should it have? I was thinking a crafting workshop, but what else? She has no points in reading, so will she be able to actually write books if I give her some? I know she'll probably destroy everything peridoically so I was thinking of making an overhead hatch to drop her booze and food and raw materials to rebuild shit.
>>
>>182474165
if she's really a werebeast, she doesn't strictly need food or water ever, unless you want to give her some to make her happy
I've yet to find a use for a werebeast but maybe you could give her a pick and get her to do some exploratory mining. just make sure you seal off her work before allowing normal dwarves in

>blood thorn and obsidian guitar

>>
>>182474165
she'll fuck any furniture up whenever she turns, so that's a no-no.

personally, I'd give her a room with some nice engravings, as well as a small stockpile with food and drinks. she can survive without drinking or eating, but it's still a good way to give her a better standard of living.

she'll eventually go crazy anyway, but she'll live on, since she can't starve.
>>
>>182474403
Yeah, I know she won't starve but the food/booze is just to make her have a good life. She ran out while all the other soilders were ignoring the order and confronted the beast alone before it reached the fort where it could've killed many innocents, and she held her own pretty well against it for a while. It's gonna be a long eternity, and she deserves a good one. But yeah, I don't see much use for werebeasts either, unless you wanna cheese your fort to survive forever, but that's easy enough to accomplish anyways. Maybe during a siege I could release her

She already was in the military. I guess she would be the ultimate soldier, so long as no single encounter kills her she's immune to any injuries, and transforming in battle would be awesome. Give her a pick and she can dig out her own raw materials as necessary. In my experience a single werebeast will only have time to destroy one or two buildings while transformed, and if she's in a workshop when it happens that's probably where she'll start. Put a couple of workshops together and you've got pretty good redundancy to keep her from destroying furniture. Keeping a caged werecitizen is really a lot less work than you would think.

I worry about this sometimes, but then I remember that he's been working on it for 15 years now. He has long, long passed the 'burn out time', and he's well into 'I literally can't live without doing this thing'. You can't do something like that out of your own free will for that long without getting severely attached to it. I feel like if he stopped he would just be constantly swamped with thoughts 'this would be a good idea to implement' or 'oh this wouldn't be too hard to put in' or 'I cant possibly leave that bug in any longer'. Pure speculation, of course, but I fully expect him to continue working on DF until he is physically/mentally incapable of doing so or dead.

Well, surely for a mug or a door, but any videogame takes a lot of time to do, it's not even a one man activity by any means. So logically, an artifact game takes ages

toady is a fucking monster when it comes to persevering working on his projects.

I mean, we constantly have people set out to make their own DF clones where they have these grand vision that they will succeed where toady has failed, and then they give up immediately.

for example, there's gnomoria.

also, there's URR. the URR dev was actually a bay12 forum member who set out to make a non-shitty version of DF's adv mode. recently, after just a few years, he announced that he had run out of fuel, and that all of his projects, including URR, are now on-hold. but toady? toady keeps on working, as he has done for the last 15 years.

Sometimes attacks only graze. Good weapons against shitty armor don't guarantee every attack will always lop off limbs in every circumstance.

you let go when you move away from a wrestled target
also causes a fight

Why are many players irritated by nobles? If they cause you trouble then you have a live test subject for fancy death traps.

I should make it like that actually, I just set it to grab your hunt target cause I had the code handy.

Also the chick I scooped up is apparently a widow.

Guys what is this?

I was walking across a frozen ocean in adventure mode and I came upon this.. thing.

It's only 1 level high, and the crevice in the middle goes all the way into the ocean (20 levels or so). You can swim around but you if leave the crevice you start drowning.

There's some small areas inside the thing if you climb it down, but they're empty of anything or anyone.

When you reach the water down there, you can dive for some levels and you could see magma stone.

Is it a glitch? It's way too uniform to be a random glacier.

I guess it's a holdover from old versions where you got a ton of them and some of them made really outrageous demands
I don't know, in the current version they aren't v problem at all, even monarchs don't kick up a fuss if their rooms aren't ready for a few seasons

Do you like to imagine all the maps you generate take place on the same world? My headcanon is that the world of Dwarf Fortress is an endless flat plane, with pockets of livable terrain cut off from one another by massive plains of ice and bottomless oceans.

So for things like birds they generally say

[BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:STANDARD_MATERIALS]
[REMOVE_MATERIAL:HAIR]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:FEATHER:FEATHER_TEMPLATE]
[BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:STANDARD_TISSUES]
[REMOVE_TISSUE:HAIR]
[USE_TISSUE_TEMPLATE:FEATHER:FEATHER_TEMPLATE]

[BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:VERTEBRATE_TISSUE_LAYERS:SKIN:FAT:MUSCLE:BONE:CARTILAGE]

[BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:BODY_FEATHER_TISSUE_LAYERS:FEATHER]

Which loads up the tissues/materials (plus feathers and sans hair), defines its tissue layers with the standard vertebrae stuff, and then adds a layer of feathers to every part that body detail plan says to.

My question is why remove hair? You don't HAVE to implement hair, the vertebrae TL by default doesn't, everything with hair has to say 'add hair' afterwords just like the birds say 'add feathers' afterwords. For that matter why doesn't standard materials/tissues already come with things like chitin/feathers?

Basically I'm making a creature with both hair and feathers, so I'm wondering if the removal of hair is somehow necessary, or whether I can simply say use hair material/tissue template and also use feather material/tissue template.

I once had an instrument that was called Obok and comprised only of a small wooden cube that you struck to produce a sound, a model of one of them wouldn't trouble you for long.

You'll get new ones starting up and shit like that, yeah.

I'll toss these out here, this one can be used while the calendar is updating, and allows you to set the end date so it ends asap or set it years in the future and go watch tv: https://pastebin.com/0Ligm6Xt

This one is used while making a world but it adds in some options when you find yourself wishing you had set the site cap/end year/pop cap higher or lower: https://pastebin.com/Gqd6Pmj4

Note that it needs the set-belief/personality scripts here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=164123.msg7503246#msg7503246 to work properly with those.
