bob was definitely a strong character (top tier or just outside of it), but a lot of people thought ganryu was mid tier or even a bit lower. saint changed all their minds. his bob was actually just his supportive character, his ganryu was winning him his games mainly.

the team wasn't popular much at all, especially since ganryu didn't have many strong partners besides bob, and most bryan players used bob/bryan and bob players used that too or bob/bruce or even bob/lars. ganryu players, the few that there were (saint included) kind of had to use bob/ganryu at a high level.

at a high level, it doesn't really apply. the only time it has applied imo is last year's evo, when fated retribution just dropped in arcades so the changes and in particular akuma were brand new and totally undiscovered.

i kinda undersold him, but ganryu wasn't bad. bad in tag 2 was like bears, dr bosconovich, alex, and roger. low tier was non-joke chars and even those guys were competitive. some people thought ganryu was around there, but i think more people put him mid tier.

also most people have played against ganryu in tekken 5, where he was pretty popular (and really strong), so they knew what he was about and how to play against him for the most part. his gimmicks and weird strings were there, but weren't his strong point. it applies only to a certain point. that's why there have never been any yoshi players doing super well in international, world class tournaments, although guys like kaneandtrench in europe do well with him in that region.

This tournament proved that the entire meta revolves around throwing out literally nothing but safe shit unless you're way behind. It's no surprise that everyone, particularly honest Bryan mains, had to switch to cheesy shit to get anywhere. The amount of timeouts for a game like Tekken is aids, and JDCR fully manipulated it considering he had a plan to come out on top in every single timeout situation.

yea he was employed by afreeca, the main streaming site in korea. granted, he picks characters that are generally pretty simple. kazumi, feng, dragunov, and he's played devil jin since dr on the side and on basically every team in tag 2, and bryan of course since 5.0. the steve pick clearly did nothing, and it's most likely because that character is much harder in general than those first 3 i mentioned.

the most "reliable" rumor is that it had something to do with deathmatches since tekken 6. jdcr won a long deathmatch vs knee in 6 and they didn't play another one in that game because knee didn't want to but jdcr did. tag 2 rolls around and knee really wants the run back, but jdcr constantly ducks him. tie in the fact that knee basically never cleanly beat jdcr in tournaments, especially with his signature bryan even in tag 2 itself, and they basically never saw eye-to-eye.

apparently they were on good terms and even friends back in 5.0 and dr and early tekken 6.

other rumors involve girlfriends, which seems somehow less believable than this deathmatch stuff.

fighting games and the fgc have pretty much always been about overcoming the odds. bad matchups, pixel life comebacks, low tier heroes, and beating the clear best players. there has to be a favorite for there to be underdogs for people to get excited for when they win.

if the best don't consistently win, why would anyone care if someone beats them? a new winner at every major isn't necessarily exciting because no one is a favorite or an underdog, so there's no story to any match besides anything personal or long standing like match history between the players or the character matchup. saint was the man to beat last year and he got beat. nobi was the year before that, and he got beat. jdcr is the man this year. we'll see if he'll get beat.
