Instructions said I need to unpack the files and merge/replace the old ones. First of all most of the files you download are not zipped and are just some files you cant open, second when I put them in the umineko folder it didnt ask for merge or replacement. Finished Dies Irae. It feels short. Yes, it's walls upon walls of text, but the scale of the story is small: just a dozen days. Barely anything happens. The character roster is moderately big, but nothing is done with them. Kei, Malleus and Brenner could be combined into one character and it wouldn't hurt their character development, can't hurt what isn't there, Spinne, Trifa and Bey could be combined into one character, Ruberdo, Abeldo and Nigerdo could be written out, those just hijack the plot well into the third act only to not matter and disappear.
Were I to make Dies Irae into a movie it would be two hours long, no more. It would be a kind of movie that is there for one weekend. You drive in, empty a pack of popcorn watching guy named Rene Fugger beat magic nazis, drive away and forget it so hard that the very next day you are unable to tell Dies Irae from Doctor Strange.

I found the game to be really easy and I suck at games I just wish there would be a bit more forth and back, a bit tension and tactics involved. The more you progress, the easier it gets, since you amass troops. You just take over countries with ease, since you already rule 3/4 of the world and have all their soldiers. An amazing story with the best magic worldbuilding (that is even more expanded with the other stories from Type-Moon), very layered storytelling broken in 3 routes, where each one introduces plot points, characterization and foreshadowing for the twists that appear in the next, and each route is focused on different aspects. It's a story that exceeds in having tons of well-written twists (you MUST play the routes in order and also look at the Servants' stats to understand their abilities, otherwise you may be thinking there are asspulls), great themes of altruism, justice, giving a meaning to life, morality, what is evil (in a unique execution, you'll know what I mean in Heavens Feel), redemption, responsibility, etc., and all the important characters are excellent, although only some of them are fleshed out immediately in the first route, most take time. The fights are amazing and well detailed, and the effects and soundtrack are impressive. And of course the use of interactive elements, with many choices that lead to unexpected and revelatory bad ends

The cast of Dies Irae blew me away. I would not say that Dies Irae has a heavy emphasis on villains at all, that sort of misses the point. Dies Irae is about the many facets of people and an exploration of their stories. Beyond just stating something boring like "no one can be reduced to a villain", Dies Irae goes a bit further to show us many valid perspectives of a character that seem to be contradictions. They are not. The truth is that people are often all of these things at once.

Dies Irae is essentially a competition between three stories to define reality. Wagner's Ring Cycle, Faust, and the Odyssey. But since this is a character discussion, let me show a very concrete example of how Dies Irae uses multiple worlds of reference to capture multiple valid perspectives of a character. My favorite is Rusalka.

Rusalka Schwägerin / Anna Mariea Schwägerin / Malleus Maleficarus.

Rusalka serves many functions in the story and each of her names captures a part of her personality. The core referential worlds that define her are both the main story worlds (Ring Cycle, Faust, Odyssey) as well as her own unique worlds.

Her Own Worlds: 1) The Opera Rusalka (as the Siren/Witch/Nymph who wanted love but was betrayed.) 2) The Opera Anna Bolena (as the "star that has already set", the "sacrifice".) 3) The Opera Maria Stuarda (persecuted as a witch, executed by the hand that she had hoped would save her.)

Rusalka is all of these things. She is also reduced to a simple villain/witch as Malleus Maleficarus. But that misses everything that is actually cool about her character. Every character in Dies Irae has facets and parallels between each of these stories.

This whole story is about Ren who is Odysseus. He is a man who has lost his home and is on a journey to reclaim it. That is the core thing that defines Ren throughout all of the routes and his motivation. I believe he even shouts something about the Odyssey in his final showdown with Reinhard and Mercurius. What I love about the setup is, as mentioned earlier, the final choice of "who is your Penelope?"

UBW reflects the confusion that pits secularists against believers, and the partisanship that inhibits national alliance. This tension is so visually amped up that the opposition of Shirou to Gilgamesh feels revelatory: Man versus the god in Man. Nasu's opening sequences interweave the origin stories of these mythic heroes and their alter egos.

I consider my point carried and Fate again redeemed.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus and Penelope are separated for so long that Penelope has to test Odysseus to make sure it is him. Rea says to Ren that she will give him a hard test as well. Penelope tests Odysseus by asking him to have a servant move their bed-- however, Odysseus responds with something only he would know: their bed is made from a live olive tree, it cannot be moved. He passes the test. Similarly, when Ren and Rea meet, Rea blurts out her half of their inside joke about Kumamoto. Ren, recognizing her after the journey responds with his half of the joke, confirming his identity as her Odysseus. And they are reunited.

Unless Ren chooses to go off the script and pursue the other Penelope who has been waiting for his return, Rusalka. In a story about going off the script, I found the Rusalka end a really fun option.

It's stuff like this that makes Dies Irae great. Also that each of the 4 arcs roughly follows the 4 arcs of Wagner's Ring Cycle (they are each title-dropped as chapters), that everything is filled with Faustian bargains, and that there are so many other parallels.

As for the heroines, I think they could have used a bit more screen-time, but were still wonderful. Really glad I read this.

I quite liked the title of Malleus Maleficarum actually. It's certainly not her most interesting role, but in the light of her ever more desperate attempts to defy death so she can reunite with Lotus, I can't help but see it as a bit of cruel wordplay on Mercurius' part; she is the Witches' Hammer because she is fated to put an end to witches, not by exterminating them but by dying as the last, and he gives her the title as a kind of Memento Mori.

Fate/stay night is a beautiful exercise in the emotional craft of storytelling. It isn't a story about mythological heroes going at war. It's a story about the importance of what heroes represent, and fighting for those ideals. Tightly plotted, thematically consistent, emotionally affecting, and incredibly layered.

The novel simultaneously questions the metamorphosis of human ideals, man's quest for heroism, etc. There are thousands of themes seamlessly woven together. Idealism vs Utilitarianism, the importance of hope in the face of adversity, wishes as an inherently selfish act, cultural expectations of good and evil, the contradictory nature of child heroes, redemption, and a whole bunch mythic revisionism and allegory to top it all off.

Don't get me started on the prose itself, every passage tells a second, sometimes even third narrative underneath the first. I think it's statement to its greatness.

Nasu crafted not a game, not a "story", but a universe. It's every bit as detailed, every bit as supple and responsive as ours. It's a moving Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Of the various themes present in Fate/stay night, Nasu's theme of ethics and value theory incorporated with various interactions between the characters appeal to logos, ethos and pathos, and this amalgamation of techniques once again prove his acuity and status as the smartest and wisest writer of our time.

Fate/stay night takes the set of ideals a lot of fictional stories just run with and says - "but the real world does not work that way" - setting up an indepth exploration on what could motivate person to pursue such a path, thereby deconstructing the idea of heroism and pragmatism and the idea of selfless actions for selfish reasons (namely the idea that the fulfillment of "saving people" can only come from people actually being in peril).

Yes, that irony is not at all lost on me. But I feel that it is... well, it is symptomatic of her very sad curse. It is what she defaults to being rather than what she can be. In nearly every route, Rusalka gets to be only one thing-- a sacrifice. A witch that tortures. A witch that is tortured. She goes through that cycle very endlessly, both in her life outside of the main story and in her life in the main story. Whenever she begs with an outstretched hand... the result is either senseless violence befalling her or an equally merciless letdown.

That is why my preferred interpretation of the entirety of DI is with the "may the star that crawled upon the ground find happiness" ending.

If we follow the script, Rusalka just does not get the happy ending. The best she can ever get is one small fleeting glimpse of it with Lotus-- against a long lifetime of tragedy. Honestly, I love that Rusalka/Rea's routes are one in the same. It is such a perfect way of expressing their equal claim to being the Penelope of the story.

I'm a hardcore Dies irae fan, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Suwahara City where I would often train with Kei and help out Rusalka with her torture fetish, but one day as I was talking to Rusalka, we went to my house for a private talk. She giggled again, "Suicide will require pain buuut...if you want it quick...Get a gun and a nice shot to the head works.

I then agreed and she gave me a kiss on the forehead, "I know this will be tough but once it's over and done, you'll get to live here!" I then woke up and this was last week and i purchased a gun. I might actually kill myself because that dream just felt too real to be fake and my life isn't doing so grand.

I like how all these DI pastas about shit that's actually in the novel as opposed to the FSN ones that just read their own silly interpretations into Shirou using clean cookware to make breakfast.

When does Dies Irae get good? Someone here said it was on par with Nasu's stories but about 4 hours in it just seems like some very typical chuuni trash with the utilization of the nazi skin being the only unique dimension to it (and horribly wasted on a bland art style). The "what if you were the protagonist of a novel" bit a little after the start was hilariously bad, probably even less subtle than the themes of Persona 4.
