in my experience leveling monkeys in LW2 is easy, what is hard is having the squad you want at the time you need it, my roster is all people scattered around so I end up with missions with 2 SPARKs, a mission with no specialist, officers training 24/7 so never actually available for missions, and psi ops that are wounded for 30 days all the time.

Well, they've said repeatedly that getting the new hero classes will require a lot of credit with the resistance factions, which is hard to amass because you get it via covert options and it is a pool that you spend on several things.

That plus their abilities being really expensive and levelled up from a universal pool and the new will mechanic acting as fatigue means I'm not particularly concerned - any point where you can run an all hero squad would already be you intentionally gimping your campaign past the point where you would have won anyway just to do so.

Snipers are literally the only balanced class. You can build snipers from any of the trees and have something viable.

Good luck with your army of middle-tree Grenadiers or Assaults or Rangers though. Or the remarkably specific missions that make left-tree Technicals viable. And I know no one dumb enough to run middle-tree Specialists.

Gunners are 'balanced' by each tree being broken in its own way.

Avoid alien rulers until you have OP soldiers with lots of non-% based damage like eplosives, and lots of ways to shut aliens down.

Not sure about vanilla, but they're pretty nice in long dong 2. Not only do they not need cover, they can provide high cover for your troops, so they're good for advancing and breaking enemy formations quickly. Really useful for hectic missions like retaliations.

The fact that they can deploy with wounds and repair in the field can also be really handy, and means it's not such a big deal when they get hit. You should try to smoke/aid protocol them if you're going to take a lot of fire, though.

Yeah sneks aren't great soldiers or frontline fighters (barring high dodge) & their damage really falls off by the end game but they're fantastic at putting out overwatch shots or spotting.
MECs are the tanks SPARKs should have been and do real well at drawing fire & being artillery.
Sectoids are cheap & alright soldiers though their status effects and the ability to spawn zombies is what you want them for being a real force multiplier at high levels they'll be dishing out void rifts or lances as well as domination of 1 enemy per battle (unless you picked solace for some reason). Best high level ayy
Mutons are good soldiers if slow. Solid damage and can take shitloads of damage even at low tech levels. If you get some good AWC rolls they can become absolute monsters but are less versatile than human soldiers.
Cryssilids are actually alright hit and runners & can tank a lot of damage as they get more experience (especially if you equip them with good armor AND a vest or plate). Low level lids are admittedly hard to put to good use but they become made out of goes fast at high ranks.
Codexes are busted in half.

Berserkers: Surprisingly or not they're extremely good scouts, can bust apart cover like no ones business (through movement), take a fuckload of fire & if you put gear on them even act as a nice grenade carrier. (i use fulton harnesses to clean up all the dead advent myself). Obviously the lack of range is a pain but you'll get used to it just break LOS
Gatekeeper: Glorious little death orbs. Either build it to be a tanky BFG/wannabe SHIV or focus on psionics & laugh as you summon 10+ zombies in a single turn.
Sectopod: What do you think it wouldn't be busted in half? Admittedly the wraith cannon is if you're not overwatch+slow advancing is just a waste of 2 turns & you'll be using the 2 shot heavy primary to wipe out hordes of advent, the lightning field can situationally become useful incase of lids or if you're able to dive the sectopod into a pod of entrenched ADVENT.

Andromedons are slow as hell. I mean seriously too damned slow. So slow you'll be willing to spend a superior speed PCS on them. They're unsurprisingly tanks with an inbuilt grenade ability and solid combat ability though they have the rage inducing ability to both use cover & move through it destroying it. Meaning that it should be kept separate from your other squad mates or it'll fuck up their cover too.
Archons should either be CQC monsters that hit & run or support gunners with high mobility which works real well when you hit reaper. Like all units that can't take cover breaking LOS is an archon's best friend.

The main aliens (elders) go around collecting other alien species and genetically mutating/adapting them to fit in to their alien empire. They do this by focusing on the inherent strengths of the species where they are better than anything else available.

They get to humans and decide we are the best thing theyve come across for
1. making new bodies for themselves
2. turning into a tactical supercomputer to direct all warfare efforts

Half right, the Elders have been going around searching for a species that has the same psionic potential as they do, so they can get a body(lmao) because they have super aids, all the races up until humanity have failed at this, but they have found use for them, which is why they keep them around, Mutons for example are stronk big angry monster barbarians from space, so they make perfect soldiers.

And then they got to Humanity, our bodies are pretty garbage compared to things like Mutons, but our psionic potential is up there with the Elders, so they want our bodies, unfortunately in the end the Commander goes Super Saiyan and just nukes their shit because Humanity is better than them.

/xcg/ hasn't bothered to locate any free copies/files of the classic UFOs, but openxcom pretty much now solves anything you need for x-com and is basically the super deluxe re-mastered version.
I suppose it wouldn't be to complicated to just throw all my x-com files necessary to play openxcom in a mega, I'll consider doing that when I have some time, because openxcom has the it's own executable, so the DRM protection of steam doesn't apply.

I haven't ventured into true difficulty with my current mod setup so far, but I can say that I have run out of grenades once or twice on an ABA2 on Veteran run. That was during the start when I only had four soldiers though. The thing is to go for maximum radius to make the most out of each grenade. I was lucky enough to roll Volatile as well.

I use this so i can take undesireables out of my roster with out violating the spirit of x-com randomization, by giving them a valid nation+bio+name within the built in pool so everything is like it never happened, the ethnic cleansing is covered up.

Very action economy efficient. Makes good use of special ammo because you shoot twice or more every turn. As other anons noted, dealing lots of damage to spread out targets (something nades can't do) or focusing all your shots on a single target/fan fire. Very flexible.
