The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of a Dead Earth
>Crossout
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>GearBlocks
>Garry's mod
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMaden b
>Skywanderers

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general
>Shadowverse, found in the shadowverse general, /svg/, not in this general
>Crossout, found in the robocraft general, /rcg/, not in this general

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Say what you will but it's objectively a far better game.
I would not, however, be completely opposed to creating a new "building arena" general, or /bag/. This could cover anything from Robocuck to Crossout to those two others on steam nobody cares about to REM and Machinecuck and it allows us to take Kaban as a mascot.

On paper, /bag/ is a great idea.
However, there is simply not enough interest to sustain 2 different threads, as I assume most people would stay in /egg/.
We are just about keeping this place alive, and I can't imagine if it was split in any way, as I doubt people would have much desire to funpost both here and there equally.
Besides, the interest in Crossout is waning, so it might not be necessary in the long run.

My first guess would be the reactor making silicon fragments from silicon. You go all the way round the reactor each time you bring in a new atom. Looking at the overall view while it's running might help you spot any other bottlenecks.

This was my solution to that part. I also did the splitting into different outputs differently, so this reactor just has to handle one output.

Extend the middle ones or place the rear ones more inside, like placing the advanced rotor directly into that oxygen generator, because when you rotate those thrusters, they will destroy each other unless you turn off thruster damage.
>>
>>182065853
They'll be rotating in sync though, and not rotating too far (they'd collide anyway if laid flat). The beefy rear hydrogen engines are enough to speed up laterally.

You probably don't want to do anything more on your first reactor than you're doing already. If you speed up silicon into silicon fragments, your first reactor's going to be the next bottleneck. You want it going as fast as you can.

I did a bit of a hack on mine to pull off the 3 outputs with the 3 remaining reactors. The first sends a third of the fragments to the relevant output, and the remaining to the second reactor. The second. The second sends one of the doped versions to the output, while alternately sending the spare silicon and a fragment to the third. The third then sends the waste it receives to the recycler before making the other doped version.

I created an image to try and help visualise it, as I realised part way through it's probably a bit hard to follow all that.

Those things mostly work, usually only rotors and pistons and wheels are fucked. Rotors and pistons also work most of the time, but the few times they decide not to, they'll wreck everything around them. All of this is the same in MP except worse.

I have Mainframe A with every piece of detection connected to it.

I have Mainframe B with a CRAM, connected via wireless to Mainframe A.

The turret is not engaging the target at long range. It has 100% detection rate, is being tracked and locked.

I tried replacing Mainframe B with just a connector so A was in direct control, but still the cannon is only firing when targets are close.

How can I make the AI shoot the CRAM as a long range artillery?
>>
>>182094097
Build your shit right and hit your proper booster set while pointing directly up it and you won't have problems. You need to make sure you only use your inline-with-CoM set otherwise you're gonna have a bad time.
>>
>>182094173

The cannon is T H I C C because I wanted a long range artillery, 123m/s, 40 degrees elevation, 1483mm shell.

Boosters are probably getting a massive rework anyways at some point. The devs have stated multiple times they dont like the boosters and how they function, and even had some big threads in closed beta asking players for idea on what they would like changed, or reworked.

Alot of players liked the idea of removing boosters and having "Nitro" tanks you equip to your car, where each tank adds more nitro time to increase your top speed. But burning nitro builds engine heat and if you overheat from using the nitro too much your nitro goes into a long cooldown time, like when you fire machine guns/shotguns too long and they do their cooldown.

>white nitro adds 5 seconds
>blue adds 7 seconds
>purple adds 9
>or something like that
>no longer any need to equip 12 huge boosters that make your car ugly as fuck
>just tuck some nitro canisters into your car, and manage your heat as you drive

But I doubt we'd ever see anything like that.

The dev doesn't want to add anything in that doesn't have at least some hard numbers attached to it.
Personally I'm hoping he adds in Graphene eventually, due to it being light, structurally robust, elastic, and a better electrical conductor than copper. I'd imagine it would be quite useful in the construction of railguns, capacitors, and armor.

>Why wouldn't you want that?

I can give you a shitty essay if you want.
TL;DR: Framerate is more important than a floating garage, such size of large vessels is only to be used when needed.

Framerate/simspeed so you can actually do any of that at a higher speed than a slideshow. There's an upper limit of how many individual things can be simulated at relatively high-ish detail with current computing.
Multi-core simulation of independent ships was a step in the right direction, but that shit doesn't fly too well on accurate collisions between said ships.

It's very nice and all to have a massive mobile base, did it myself in FTD, but that wasn't just masturbating over the sheer size of the vessel, it was a necessity based on supply route distance and the problem of supply ships being intercepted and destroyed. I didn't feel like expending resources on protecting the convoys, so I improvised and took the idea and ran with it until it was a massive battleship/carrier with production facilities.

This only worked because it literally ceases to exist when not actively fielded, reducing performance lost to nothing.

Smooth, consistent gameplay is far and away more important than massive autistic scale of things you can't use. What are you gaining from placing ships in hangers, other than simply masturbatory purposes like a rich man in their vintage antique car garage.

I built one that could do 12 tiny single person fighters that were essentially a cockpit with tiny mod air bottles and a tiny mod reactor, for full sized SSF's and the better optimization you could probably pull it off without fun-killing levels of lag. I wouldn't court disaster by putting two of those ships and their fighters anywhere near one another tho, and the fighters in my carriers always CLANGed occasionally resulting in holes in the ship and a bunch of pulverized fighter chunks floating around the bay.
>>182119331
Optimization has made the game better but I wouldn't call it a leap or anything.
>>
>>182119331
No, then, it has not been optimised to the extent that you seek and never will. Literally not possible with their engine as it is, the devs as they've always been, especially in multiplayer.

I played recently on a server with ridiculous specs (128 core server grade shit with some stupid amount of ram, running on a 10gb connection, ect) some sysadmin was fucking around with, including some custom scripts further optimising things as far as they could go with things being assigned to as many disparate cores as possible, and while the server stubbornly refused to die even when twelve players were doing their very best to kill the fuck out of it with massive mechanized contraptions being flung around at each other and at planets, it was still nearly unplayable in terms of framerate/simspeed.

This

To make a part I want, I need copper, scrap and several other rare parts. To make those rare parts I also need the above

To get copper I need to do raids, to do raids I need to win, and I can only attempt raids a few times every day

Sometimes you will loose raids because your success depends heavily on your team mates not bringing stupid as fuck builds into combat with no chance of helping

If I want to do more raids in a day, I need to do pvp with a fuel tank which increases my chance of being blown up and must be protected

I need to win that match, which isn't always guaranteed. Even then the fuel tank has to also survive so if i die helping my team win, no fuel.

In fairness, a mothership is probably the best way to go in MP. The odds of having to uproot and fuck off are pretty high in a server, so building your infrastructure around that is a pretty wise choice. Ideally you've got an processing and storage oriented vessel outfitted for extra-heavy lifting, a grinding and printing platforms, a small hangar bay, and points to mount your various main ships; TBM, frigate, maybe a transport vessel.

Alternatively, you could make multiple dedicated use ships then you can hook up to a dedicated transport frame.

A smart person would station the hub when not in transit to mitigate some of the lag and prevent unwanted CLANGing.

Then again it's been a longass time since I actually seriously built anything bigger than a corvette sized ship.

>>182125000
There is no other space/engineering game I can think of that has deformation and actual chunks being able to be shorn off a ship to float endlessly in space.
>>
>>182125346
Well, ChoDE ships can be shorn into multiple pieces by really violent explosions and not only will their debris pieces persist but they will follow orbital paths as well, they also aren't made of cubes and when perforated by projectiles display multitudes of small holes that actually exist in the structure of the ship instead of simply being applied as a copy/paste generic bullet hole.

If there is a god he would create a bastard child of ChoDE and Spengo where you could use the exacting detail and multifarious different materials and internal components of ChoDE to build components that could then be built piece by piece as they are in Spengies and directly piloted by the player. God in Heaven would then design a robust and stable server where multiple people could play in a persistent map and mine planets or for factions or build CLANGhulks without everything running in slow motion.

I know though that even if quantum supercomputers become commercially available I'll probably die before such a game is created.

There's no point in having such small sub-factories.

Just go with a monolithic main-bus factory until you can't expand without tearing the whole thing down. At that point, start removing sections (iron plates, copper plates, circuits) and moving them to sub-factories. Use the space to expand sections which don't need a sub-factory.

You don't need to use the circuit network to limit storage. By the time that you switch to sub-factories, each train will dump its entire cargo at a specific offload, and you'll typically have multiple trains for each specific route.

>sorting with filter inserters
make 4 cargo wagons, 1 for iron, 2(or3) for copper
use 1 cargo for exports
you get faster loads/unloads (if you have dedicated import/export cargo wagons you have both sides to load/unload) you can make the route more often, overall higher throughput
belts in the subfactory will be faster because you will be able to just use splitter and not rely on inserters

Why aren't there any 2d spesship buildan games? There's plenty of 2d modular space *combat* games, like Istrolid, but it goes from there straight to minecraft clones in space. Nothing in which to build a comfy little ship and fly about.

Thinking more about it, here's what I want: a cargo hold management sim.

I want to play the part of a ship's engineer, building logistics and processing facilities to handle the various things the ship does (like take on raw materials from mining facilities, and trade with factory stations) as well as reprocess life support for the crew, power the engines, stuff like that.

Kinda like Factorio in space, now that I think about it, but with more structured gameplay. Like if you crossed it with Elite.

train only read signals on the lefthand side of the track according to their direction of travel
when you place a signal you split the track at that point into two sections, before and after it
keep placing signals and you have a bunch of chunks of track separated by signals

now, signals will turn red when their "chunk" of track has a train in it. Trains won't progress into a chunk of track that has a red signal.

So, at your intersections, put a signal on the left hand side of each part of it, before the branch, and one signal after the intersection on each branch to make the junction its own chunk (three signals total). Now trains wont enter that intersection if another train is already in it. Very basic but it works.

Just put signals every so often on your tracks so trains can use the same track but don't ride up one another's ass.
>>
>>182154426
signals are always on right side of the track
if you seem to be placing them on the left, that's because rails can be 2-ways.
use normal signals all the time, except intersection entrances (just before an crossrail) so they can detect forward if anyone is occupying the crossing
2 headed trains are a sin
if you want to use loops (like on your pic) it's a good idea but each section of rail that will be 2-way must have signals on both sides (while the loop on only 1 side)

do you have detection equipment in the turret
>>
>>182162984
The AIs have engagement range settings, have you set all of that up?
>>
>>182162984
Do you have enough processing power on your mainframe? Did you adjust the sensor pickup? Is the LWC connected to the turret?
>>
>>182154426
Rail signals have three functions:

1. Separate track into blocks.
2. Stop trains from entering a block which is occupied by another train.
3. Set the direction of travel (a train can only pass a signal which is on its right; it can't pass a signal on its left unless there's also a signal on its right; the two must be *exactly* opposite).

When a train enters a block, all signals leading into that block will turn red, preventing other trains from entering the block. (The code actually allocates blocks to trains as they approach, turning the signals to amber when a block has been allocated to a specific train).

Thus, the only way that two trains (on automatic) can collide is if you manually place them in the same block.

Chain signals are like rail signals but also prevent a train from entering a block if the next non-chain signal on the train's route is red/amber. A chain signal will turn red if all exits have red signals, blue if some exits have red signals. Chain signals are used to prevent trains from blocking junctions; they won't enter the junction if they can't leave it.

In general, don't use two-way tracks if you have more than one train. If you must use two-way tracks, don't put signals on them (put them on the one-way sections leading on and off the two-way sections). Otherwise you'll end up with trains facing each other at the signal and you'll have to fix the deadlock manually.
>>
>>182164960

They are at the default setting of <unlimited>

>>182163360
I added 50 processing units, I messed with the sensors and clicked auto-adjust a few times. The targets are always detected with little error.

I managed to make the AI fire now, but it's so inaccurate that it makes no difference. Tried with the centralised sensors mainframe and with dedicated radars and rangefinders, still fires like a stormtrooper.

Do you have an aimpoint card attached? It could be causing your gun to aim at the ammo, which is below water.

Barring that, it's some strange glitch that some people get and others don't. I've never had it so I have no clue how to fix it.
>>
>>182164960
I've found that if you use regular signals to mark blocks intended for a train to be able to stop and wait, like making a queue at a station, and just loading every intersection with chain signals, you can pretty well keep the whole system flowing.

FYI heres my racing chassis setup I use in cuckout. You probably wont have this many thin light frames unlocked, but you can subsititue them for other parts you have, so long as the wheels stay in the same spots.

6 steering wheels. For whatever reason the game goes apeshit and makes you slide all over the place with only 4 wheels when you go fast.

Provides maximum control at almost any speed. Try to keep your vehicles total weight under 2100kg, and your boosters placed low.

If a dev is so clueless that no publisher will touch them with a ten foot pole, they get their funding from early access instead.

A lot of EA projects are a couple of guys with enough motivation to get a tech demo together but don't realise how much work is involved in a finished game until they've spent a year on it and realise that they're only 10% done.

Factorio being the obvious (and possibly sole) exception.

It caught attention like a year ago, with the closed beta and invitations to enter. It looked like something engineery from outside, even when those that got in said otherwise.
Now it's open beta, free to play, with a fair amount of action and making a gunbus. Since everything is very grindy you have to play a lot before trying the interesting weapons, or use coins that you either buy or get from selling stuff on the market. The latter becomes more important than designing a car so the engineering dies entirely.

Center of mass. Otherwise it wouldn't work with the current thrusters.

since it's simplified in that way couldn't you make every ship the center of a natural gravity field that is just really weak like a real ship would be?

Maybe with mods you can, maybe there's a mod for that already. But unless you have a massive massive ship or station (unachievable on spengies) it would be too weak to affect anything.

Natural and magical gravity are different things. Gravity generators accelerate items, weighted blocks and players on a volume. Planet gravity is centered only on a planet or moon, and pulls anything. On top of it, artificial gravity doesn't work on planets.

What use would planet gravity have for a ship?

I don't. And that missile placement is bad, you can see one of the turrets can't turn like the rest. AND you are holding them with the almost decorative parts that will die with one hit.
>>
>>182216417
well I came up with it before I thought it out too much
spengies could never do anything proper with it though except to make things which are within each others gravity radius slowly drift together
nothing fun though because anything big enough to have something take somewhere less than a month to be attracted to it would be impractically huge for spengies' ability to simulate

It was neat to run through a space station that was under attack and liked the idea of repairing a ship to use in a battle. The fleet battle with the ship performing pre-programmed maneuvers while the player operated the turrets was good.

I wished that they allowed more customization and more things to repair on the "frigate" that the player has to repair.

Either way, I enjoyed it.

File: laser adder.webm (2MB, 960x882px) Image search: [Google]
laser adder.webm
2MB, 960x882px
Prototype for a full adder using mainly lasers instead of solid rods. The only scripts used are in the pinkish boxes that the lasers hit. Whenever a laser hits it, it switches to collision group E, otherwise it stays on collision group D. The blue circles on the end of the rods are group E and overlap with the sensors. When the sensors collision is switched to E the game detects they are occupying the same space and so shift them away from the sensor. This will either open or close the pathway of a laser, which can then go on to activate sensors further down the chain.

One huge advantage of this over pure rod logic is that the signal propagates so quickly, with the output appearing soon after the input with no intermediate steps required. Pure rod logic requires a cam to sequence all of the steps, and then reset it in the reverse order.

Next step - making a memory system.

Frankly it doesn't matter if the trolley got fully replaced, your actions killed a man if you pulled the lever. I believe it's better to do nothing than be an active decider in someone's fate.

define trolley
if you mean physical construct that passed near me then I would say no, so many modifications were made that despite it having a continuity (parts were replaced one-by-one) in my eyes it would be a different one (no consciousness to bind it, preemtive answer for body cells replacement)
if you mean the concept (or metaconcept) of "trolley I sent to kill that guy" then obiously it is the same trolley, it kills the crab

Laser based memory coming along nicely. It uses a type of bistable latch which either blocks or unblocks a laser. I still need to figure out the input. It seems too clunky so I'm looking for an easier way, maybe through using mirrors.

The addressing is done by the leftmost three vertical rods. They are all set at 0 (unmoved). To put one as a 1 it is moved down 4cm, which either blocks or unblocks the path of a laser. You can see how it works in this webm.

The return bus is the single large sensor block to the left. When it detects a laser it changes collision groups and can go on to move other rods for the output.

Sorry if that's not what you meant, I'm not too computer savvy.

you are planning on returning 4 or 8 bits from the memory for each address given, right?
so you can have memory that will be addressed by, let's say 10 numbers, and store 40 bits there
>>
>>182241312
Nope, just 1 bit for each address. I plan to have 2 of these registers and a single full adder/subtractor which adds one bit at a time from each register.

The limitation with this game is how the sim speed drops when there are too many shapes. My computer is very good, but 40 bits would cut into the CPU cycles I would need for other fun stuff.
>>
>>182241532
ok, 40 may be much, but I would advise going for a 4 return lasers that return whichever memory fragment you are currently asking for, doesn't have to be address 0 = bits 0 1 2 3, address 1 = bits 4 5 6 7 (aka. like it should be)
it can be address 0 = bits 0 1 2 3, address 1 = bits 1 2 3 4

CRAM:
Projectiles now last 30 seconds instead of 20

APS:
Increased flak radius and reduced damage
Disruptor shell caps no longer reduce accuracy, which means we can bust shields easier from fuckall distances.
HEAT and HESH explode on impact and can't ricochet

Anyone else find themselves in those annoying states of half-sleeping, where you can't stop thinking in an annoying pattern? This happens if I play too much factorio. I met a player from a place long ded
Who said: Some vast and content-less tales of bugs
Stand on the website... near them, on the net,
Half gassed, a corrupt visage lies, whose smugs,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold contempt,
Tell that its publisher well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these gameless serfs,
The hand that mocked them and the >heart that fed:

And on the Keen webpage these words appear:
'My name is Marek Rosa, dev of devs:
Look on my works, ye /egg/men, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the delays
Of that colossal wreck, bullshit and bare
The lone and frozen Spengies stretch far away.

Gotten reading into memory from punched cards working perfectly. Each gap in the card allows a laser to shine through, which allows it to be written into memory Using some overlapping I've gotten it much more compact than previous versions.

Reading out still not functional. When the memory is read in you can see a laser shining through the addressing rods since they all stand at 0, so I'll need a separate blanket laser-blocker so the constant readout doesn't interfere with any other operations.

Next up I need to fix the readout, then I'll be working on the full-adder. I think this version I'll represent numbers in two's complement. The delay with the adder will be negligible since the lasers travel so much faster than solid rods.

The hook just had too much rope length, but that's fixed now. Now I have to get good at landing at the right speed and catching the grabber with the right bit of the plane so I don't destroy the landing gear or other things

Also this was intended to be an actual moving carrier, but I can't find a version of the water mod old enough to work with Besiege 0.30 so it has to be a static runway instead. I thought about giving it wheels and having it move on the ground but then it would hit the mountains

I've never made a simple helicopter that could do anything more than going up and down and eventually crashing, and you want me to build a rotary wing flying carrier? I know how planes work but rotorcraft are still voodoo magic to me. I'm not really an engineer you see

I could make an airborne carrier that flies like a normal plane, but given the speeds it would have to maintain in order to stay in the air it would probably crash into the map's invisible walls while I'm busy flying the small plane around

What's a good resource for Factorio blueprints? I want to see if I'm being efficient enough in my designs. Or what the most optimized layout is for main bus assembly lines.

Also, 2 questions:
When should I start building a main bus? Is it after I start expanding into new settlements and have the means to defend expansions (i.e. flame towers, long range power, cars, trains etc.)
And is building a main bus pointless if roboports make it completely obsolete?
