How do I git gud at Rome: Total War? Is the trick just to wait to aggressively expand until you have heavy infantry, heavy cavalry and good missile units? I had less trouble with Carthage and their elephants than I did with the fucking zerg rushing Gauls and the "all phalanx, all the time" Macedonians and Greeks. Or maybe I should just try picking on an easier enemy?
>>
>>182061841
Anvil and Hammer.

Anvil with sturdy units, hammer with cavalry.
>>
>>182042619

Ah nice. Thx.
>>
>>182062034
>study units
So I should wait until Principes/Triarii and heavy cav? Hastati get fucked pretty quick by hoplites in anything approaching a fair fight and one or two generals isn't much of a hammer. Also, how does that work with the "two-man lines across the entire map lmao" Gauls? I can usually manage their smaller armies well enough but when it comes to getting some serious conquering done I find it hard to engage in any kind of strategy except "form a massive line and grind them down while protecting the archers and nipping at their flanks" just because of how fucking massive large gaulish armies are.
>>
>>182062909
Ideally, you shouldn't have to wait. If you can't get the enemy in a pinch, just flood him with militia and flank them with your elite units (or what passes as elite) while your archers are pincushioning them.

The best tactic I saw on youtube some guy started by evolving the ports to comercial ones (for income) and at leaast one of them allowed for the construction of some kind of very long range siege ship (OP as fuck).

At the same time he did an exploit where he kept his generals phase out and when trouble was coming his way he would just summon at the spot several of them with their elephants (instead of moving them around).

The only faction with which I never won so far in the hardest difficulty is that greek state with the dog flag. Hard as fuck!

Shogun 2 is also hard as fuck as long as you dont play with the faction of that faggot small island of theirs.

Oda is op as fuck once you get long yari and gun ashigaru.
As for Takeda, cavalry is really strong if you use it well. Yari cavalry will destroy ennemy's, and then you have all luxury to either bait som of his troops away to reduce pressure on your infantry, and then destroy his from behind.

Reminds me that I fell against an all cavalry army in avatar's campaign once, multiplayer if you don't know, and I couldn't do a thing against it. Gun and arrow cavalry are really hard to deal with

Oda is the shit! Swarm the foe with hordes of peasants.

if you want to do naval cultists, you want to be on the shoreline of a continent, ideally in a region that will let you level up the cargo docks
you can convert fomorians, but to do so you need to get transport ships, which take quite a bit; as such, you want to expand on land quote a bit before focusing your attention on the seas

1) Should 4X space games have pirate factions? 2) What purpose do they serve? 3) How should they be?

4) Did any 4X do pirates right?

ES2 pirates are absurd: only attack human player. Spawn endlessly, with no home base to justify their existence. No interesting interaction with them. You need to exterminate them wherever you find them. And you just have to waste FIDS on maintaining garrisons even in system which are far from the frontlines of wars with Major Factions. And they're not fun in any way.
>>
>>182092098
Sins of a solar empire did them pretty good.

Should be a mid/early game mob and can scale with the empires if left unchecked. But can also be bribed and negotiated with, ie privateers
>>
>>182092793
Sounds like Distant Worlds as well.
>>
>>182092098
Pirates in space 4xes are barbarian surrogates and called pirates because its a staple of space sci-fi.

I think the issue is that combat in space 4xes tends to not be that good especially not in the early game which is the only segment they're really a threat and with how 'terrain' tends to work they're far more of a nuisance than something you have to flick at.

I'd rather they served as some sort of security rating. Rather than spawning out of nowhere they'd form bases near your outlying colonies, they'd primarily raid shipping (even if it makes their primary function a modifier) and actually develop and if left alone long enough form a full faction/nation. You'd be able to deal with them by researching and building anti-piracy/security buildings so you wouldn't need to play whack a mole with your fleets but you would be able to launch crackdowns with actual military fleets. You'd also be able to negotiate with them and potentially even turn them into privateers or just integrate them into your colonies.

Effectively turn them into something that starts coming out of your colonies if you don't develop them properly rather than space barbarians that are just a nuisance.

>>182087603
The game is designed for PVP, so the diplomacy is mainly there to work between humans.

Compared to Civ 5, you want to have a lot of units. You can stack your units, so a proper army should not only be able to stretch across the continent but also be several units deep (like in Hearts of Iron).

Try learning from your experiences and doing what the enemy does to defeat you. Why do they have such a big army? Is it because they have more cities, or more industry per city?

Failing that, you can just play by rote and build a library and temple in each city, and after that make sure you have a worker, and after that build military. Obviously when you get the tech for industrial stuff you should build them as well. You don't have to always be settling, but don't let your enemies take land that is rightfully yours (all of it). You don't have to pay attention to the religion or corporation systems as long as you're doing a good job conquering people.
>>
Endless space 2 has a problem. Stellaris has it too:

Once you have a certain military advantage, it costs you nothing to destroy the opponents full army.

For example: I often get gun-stuffed hunters combined with fleet repair/shield/movement protectors, and after a certain point I just don't lose ships anymore while destroying one enemy fleet a turn.

A slight military advantage just snowballs to crazytown.

I'm not sure how to fix this, but having a huge army should not be a high initial cost and then a trivial sustainment cost, because as soon as you get an early military advantage (looking at you, cravers), you can just use it to rolfrape the enemies over and over.

>>
>>182093687
>I often get gun-stuffed hunters combined with fleet repair/shield/movement protectors, and after a certain point I just don't lose ships anymore while destroying one enemy fleet a turn.

that's not really true unless you have a considerable advantage

against a similar tech opponent, you'll still be bleeding ships because of you can only have so many ships in a single fleet
>>
>>182093046
I like how Fall from Heaven 2 handled goblins. They have a little encampment and churn out weak goblins, so it's tempting to just grind them for XP (since unit experience is a big deal in FfH2). However, they also increase their power and eventually they're a real threat almost on the level of a civilization, so you find yourself at war with something you can't negotiate with and which might even take one of your cities.
>>
>>182093687
Total War tried to fix snowballing with Realm Divide. Stellaris with the crises.

It's really hard to have something in place that prevents snowballing. It's just unnatural, if you start winning you will keep winning unless something fundamentally changes. That something can't be AI getting smarter or suddenly starting to use effective counter-tactics because that's an impossible programming challenge.

Not if you have the "repair you fleet each phase" red support module. All my ships stay at full health, and when I do lose one or two it is easily replaced faster than he can replace his entire fleet.

>>182094206
> if you start winning you will keep winning unless something fundamentally changes.
Which is true because logistical and sustained costs are hard for people to understand and don't exist in most games. You pay for a ship once, and then it just exists. In real life the initial cost of a tank or ship is small compared to it's sustained cost.

Fair enough

The thing to remember in Stellaris is that strategic resources are completely worthless.
Basically every planetary system is completely interchangeable with every other planetary system, so you never ever need to settler rush because it never matters if some other guy gets a specific resource before you.

However, while planet QUALITY is irrelevant, planet QUANTITY is king, so your colonisation priority should be to target first those systems which will put several other colonisable systems inside your borders, thereby denying the opportunity to anyone else.

Early game and specially with Hyperlanes-only you can make some really nice traps with Spaceports and Defense Platforms with the FTL inhibitors.

Once fleets are 10K+, spaceports and even top tier fortresses are irrelevant unless they are used to support an equivalent fleet which can be nice to tip the balance.

Static defenses really need some reworking.

Eh, the rot started with Vanilla V. Jon Shafer was an ass and didn't test his concepts very well, and they still shoved V out the door. Yes, G&K and BNW fixed things but they should have been true expansions to an excellent base than required mixups.

I think they just started taking their userbase for granted.

I've been meaning to combine various mods to try and make a Rhye's and Fall for Civ V, but I don't know how much it's possible for Rhye's gameplay to even work given 1UPT. Also does anyone still play Civ V?

The "Super Power modpack for Civ V allows 2UPT and collateral damage, which I may change for 3UPT, and I find it ironic the best Civ V mods basically reinvented Civ IV gameplay. Which I'm not complaining about, Civ V is a pretty game.

New to Stellaris. The spot you start a colony gives bonuses to non-science yields directly adjacent to it, right? So is it worth overwriting a +2 yield like food if it means avoiding plopping the colony next to science?
>>
>>182164772
Sure senpai
>>
>>182164772
You're not really overwriting it. You still get the +2 food, so the only thing you're giving up is the opportunity to put a hydroponics building there later on. But since you can put a hydroponics on an empty square anyway, you're not actually giving up anything.

There aren't any real tactics in Civ 4. The correct way to win a war is to perform strategy such that you have more and better units, which as you said is what you've been doing. If you're able to do that then presumably you can do the really trivial stuff like putting your units on hills.
>>
>tfw stealing pearls from a faction that doesn't even know that you exist
wtf I love the Forgotten now
>>
>>182177252
Things like this really make me prefer the Civ5/6 style of one UPT, it has its issues and the AI struggles but having some form of tactics is just so much nicer
>>
>>182177737
The problem with UPT is that it turns the game into chess and let you stale even with inferior units.

At least it makes 300 viable.
>>
>>182177875
I agree but I still prefer it over unlimited units per tile. EL is probably the best hybrid, no doomstacks but you can't cheese with low numbers of units.
>>
>>182178050
The Endless games have honestly a very solid gameplay. It's a decent compromise, because you know that this unit attacking you isn't actually a stack of 82 units, without being as ridiculous as a column of tanks stuck in one valley by slingers.
>>
>>182178356
It makes logical sense as well, in reality you can't fit infinite people and materiel in an area but it also reflects how in reality its not going to be all infantry or all tanks in an area either.
>>
>>182177875
Yes, that's the entire point. Being able to do something with inferior units other than get steamrolled, because you're smarter than your opponent, is a sign of a good tactical game.

(of course the devs couldn't make an AI system that could handle this situation, but that's another issue)

What are some Civ 4 and Civ 5 mods that have the same concept as Cavemen2Cosmos? I like the idea of expanding all the way to the space age and terraforming planets but searching around for more opinions C2C is a very bloated mod with stability and balance issues. Sci-fi and fantasy stuff is also good with me. I don't have any friends to play with so any overhauls that also make the AI better would be nice. Would also like to know ifs there is any promising mod developments for Civ 6? In theory the game being natively 64bit should allow more possibilities for advance mods because of more memory but I heard some shady dealings with that game. Something about them selling the SDK separately and limiting it because they don't want player created content competing with their DLCs.

By this point you should really have figured out that features in Stellaris aren't remotely geared towards affording you balanced a enues towards victory.
Everything is just for RP purposes.

Absolving uourself of any responsibility to make the features of your game actually *useful* must make the design process so much easier. But I'm sure that's just a coincidence, and not the reason Wiz does it at all

I complain about Stellaris imbalance as much as fhe next autist, but I actually don't mind CUHRAZEE Crisis fleets. It's like the Mongols in CK2. They're supposed to be an un-preparable-for terror, an outside context problem for which half the time the only solution is to flee to the other side of the galaxy.
My favourite Stellaris game was one where the Unbidden purged all my core worlds and I ended up as a tiny empire of PTSD'd last-of-their-kind, forced-resettle-just-before-planet-loss survivors, huddling on the galactic rim behind an insane AE (insane because they had stack-overflowed their own fleet power so they thought they were -2M strength instead of +2M and thus never fought anybody) into the twilight of the late 2600s.

And I appreciate that one good game of RP doesn't make up for 19 bad games of shit balance, but in the specific case of the Crisis it's acceptable. Since Stellaris doesn't have a hard time endpoint, "Getting killed by the Crisis" is I think a better way of finishing a game than "Exit in 2450 due to the crushing boredom of constant steamroll wars", which is what usually happens.

the necrons were boken as fuck in general, and heroes were quite powerful in DoW. I think the way they level up in dow 3 is making people associate it with a moba
in the earlier title they just had a couple of upgrades you could get thru buildings

Guys i have an idea to make diplomacy interesting in 4X games. We just make it closer to how it works IRL, the main game play change is simple but HUGE, hear me out

>> You do not own any territories until your claims are recognized by other players.

This is the central premise behind diplomacy in the real world (case in point, you can read about the ownership of the south pole). This change would make diplomacy one of the central aspects of the game, you can send settlers everywhere but until other players recognize through diplomacy your territorial claims then then your borders are not real.
This would force players to engage in diplomacy in order to get as many other players as possible to recognize their own borders. You and your neighbor have a claim for the same territory? Then war it is! Or maybe you can sell the recognition in exchange for that neighbors recognition of another territory that is of more strategic value to you. That would also force players to create "natural" alliances with other players that dont have conflicting territorial claims (at least until a new natural resource appears and they both need it), juts like IRL.

Any thoughts?

>>
>>182250894
Yeah, vassals' planets count towards conquest victory. Though it'd probably take ages since liberated empires need to be small enough in order to accept, so you'll need to wage a handful of wars against one enemy instead of one war with vassalization demand.
>>
>>182249916
Sounds greats, but the problems are A) how do you actually code that, and B) how do you make this work with AI in a way that won't frustrate players. The way diplomacy works in games is usually a result of game needing a limited rule set to function, particularly needing a rule set that accommodates both players and AI, and really dumb AI at that. Even the best AI in the world is usually going to be worse than a human at games with laxer rule set and more option, it's why we could create an AI that could beat humans at chess in the late 90's but only just recently built one that can beat them at Go, it's why table top games can often have much looser rule sets since they don't have to accommodate non-human players or programming limitations.
>>
>>182252808
This is why the computer often plays differently than the human.

Well, shit...

I'm playing Stellaris and I just found something like ''Spectral clockwork''. Apparently, a leviathan is going to spawn and is the one that roams the galaxy.
I'm surrounding the pulsar, so I'm sure I'm going to eat this shit alone...
Question is, how can I get big enough to maintain a 20k. fleet to defeat the leviathan?
How can I transform the Ironman save into a normal one so I can savescum and whatnot to deal with it?
Caue otherwise, I'm sure this is game over, man, game over.
>>
Are there any downsides to jacking up the taxes if I own the trading bureau in ES2?
>>
>>182255728

>>
>>182255728
About 10 planets, 2250-2300 era techs.
Ironman saves every 3 months, 1st of the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th month, you can load those or alternatively you can google how to edit the save games.
I've only once fought the monster that comes from the stellar clockwork, since it always seems to spawn far from my territory it usually wandered either into an other space monster and die or flew into fallen empire territory where it died very quickly.

It's not the worst thing out there and it shouldn't be that much of a threat unless it's spawning right next to your core worlds. Ask a Curator enclave about how to deal with the thing, with the right fleet and in the right type of star system, a 10k fleet can kill it.
>>
>>182252502
On the plus side, liberated empires share your values, so they are always super happy about being your values and will never rebel.
>>
>>182249916
What's the difference between controlling a place and 'owning' it? If I roll my army into a territory and collect taxes from it, in what sense do I need to have ownership as recognized by other polities?

I'm sure you can devise such a mechanic, but in the end it seems like all the player will be doing is bribing other nations into recognizing their claims.
>>
>>182255794
iirc you don't want to jack it up too high, because otherwise other people won't ever buy anything and the market goes stagnant
however, if you're hyperaggressive like cravers, this is actually a good thing because anything that denies your enemies helps you

The funniest thing about this is everyone bawwws about Civ's art being cartoony before when anyone tries to call it out, but

>Civ 1 used fairly realistic depictions for leaders
>Civ 2 just used stock images
>Civ 3 looks like it attempted to make them look semi-realistic without going for total realism (I don't really know how to describe it but I really wouldn't call the style cartoony)
>Civ 4 was really the only truly cartoony game in the series, and even that made an attempt to make leaders look normal
>Civ 5 was very realistic and it looked fantastic

The thing about Civ 6 is that the leaders aren't just cartoony, they're caricatures. All of their features are exaggerated and it looks like shit.
