Tetris was a disaster; set up was double the amount of time than the whole segment and trannies outnumbered stable well adjusted people by 3:1. They were also using it for their own personal gain, particularly the notorious princeproto. To counteract any forms of "transphobia" in GDQ chat, they enabled emote only mode and blacklisted specific emotes until the Tetris block was over. Nah I can assure you they weren't running through it beforehand. The game is just really contained in regards to it's map design. It's always the same sort of room clusters paired together, and like they said, layer 4/floor 4 is literally always a cube and always has an exit at the opposite corner from where you spawn, as an example. All floors have general guiding principles like that. It's like BoI but not quite well designed in hiding it's secrets, which are almost always in the same type of spot.

I think the point people try to make for speedrunning at GDQs in particular is that it's significantly less and less about speedrunning every year, and more about being appealing from a marketing perspective now that GDQ is a privately owned corporation that works in conjunction with charities to raise money. It's why there are more and more sponsors every year too. compared to 3, 4 years ago it's an almost total 180. The schedule for AGDQ and SGDQ this year are almost overwhelmingly repeats, "safe" choices for games that everyone knows and has seen already, but are popular and will get donation. in 2014 there were a ton of random ass games. It used to not be boring and a lot of clingers on, in this thread at least, people who run passively or tangentially if at all, saw these events as a really great way to join the community. But without these, no SRL anymore, everyone's in discords instead of the communal IRC, it's just weird.

It's for charity, and was never meant to be a massive affair that raised millions of dollars every year. It just accidentally grew into that and the people unning the event are still so obviously inept at doing so that they haven't figured out how to vet runners, and they also don't want to because that'd be the last string to cut before they just outright admit they're doing it for cash, the only reason any of the oldbois even respect gdq is because it's a chance to make them money/followers or they think that it's still for the good of speedrunning to hold some massive clusterfuck twice a year when in reality it's just the opposite. It dissuades new runners from going because every run that isn't some massively popular megahit from the mid 90s is relegated to midnight hours or is outright denied, and just encourages non-runners to fill up seats so they can hoot and holler and stare at their phone.

We did, multiple times. the srg marathons were great and I contributed by helping establish proper stream layout and helped touch up the backgrounds used for the first and second ones. But they were mostly to help get /srg/ affiliated runners to GDQs. Hosting our own event on the scale of GDQ would be pointless. What would it be for? For charity? What charity? Just for fun? Why would any big runners come to a shit event with no viewers? You'd be better off going to NASA if you want to just go to a non-gdq event, or ESA.

I find it entertaining. I find speedrunning to be inherently very interesting, and the commentary makes it even better.

The problem isn't that it's not entertaining. It's that for some reason people watch it expecting it to be about anything other than speedrunners doing what they do.

In it's entirety, sure, it's a convention and a chance to meet up with online friends you don't see most of the year, but the ugliness reared it's head with the protomagicalgirl drama, and it was made pretty apparent. A fucking staff member had no qualms saying they were at GDQ to get followers and grow their channel. Witwix, once a pretty popular streamer, literally abused speedrunning as a whole, GDQ included, to springboard to twitch relevance. I've always believed, and will continue to believe that people are horrible and act purely on selfish intentions. No one there ever talks about the charity unless it's some dumb plug, and I'm fine with that. I just think it's scummy how since the brand of GDQ, and the event as a whole, has grown, it's gotten rid of everything even pretending to be about speedrunning as a community. Like you said, when they go, they all sit in the practice room to chat with their favorite streamers, or the casual room to play smash all day which leads to those massive event halls being barren 20 hours of the day during a GDQ. It's no longer about speedrunning, it's about making as much money as they can for the charity they were hired by, and the smaller pool of unique games this GDQ compared to GDQs past is enough proof of that to make me feel comfortable in those accusations.

It's not gone entirely, but there's an overwhelming abundance of repeat appearances here, and not just in the obvious super metroid and megaman X games, you have THREE RPGs that have had runs in the last 3 events compiled into this one, luigis mansion, dkr, battlekid even. But my point is less time in the overall flow of the marathon has been given to new games. New runners, yes, but new games like splasher and astal get relegated to the midnight hour, and it makes me sad because they'd previously get a mid-day slot and leave late nights to a JRPG, or horror/spooky block.

speaking of, more novelty blocks would be a god thing, they seem to have gone the way of the dodo too, and that's sad, I loved awful games done quick, and I loved blechy's indie spotlight.

Harder to optimize but the optimization has been done for SMB, it's literally down to raw 100% execution at this point. There are no longer even fractions of a second to save, it's frames. 1 frame makes the difference in runs. there's still new tech for SM being found because of it's comparative complexity.
