The controls are as good as any Mega Man. Arguably a little cleaner.

As with most new Inticreates games, it gets a little too easy at the end when you're overpowered. The challenges are very decent though. And more focus on boss fights than stages.

I like to think of it as a blend between the simplicity of the MM-NES games and the fancy knick-knacks of the MMX upgrades.

This is the most customization in any MM-like game to date (other than perhaps really abusing the elf system in Zero). In addition to customizing all of your shots (to the point where people complain about not being able to recreate specific weapons from games), you can modify your defense, damage, knock-back, damage from spikes, invincibility frames and so on,

Even the hardest challenges in the game never get outright aggravating as long as you think about what you're doing. And becoming completely broken once you have enough points to customize yourself into a nuke is fun.

I didn't try the MMX version, I tried the original PAL version, which the MMX version is based on.

If you're patient and don't moonspeak, play the Jap verison anyway, and help yourself with:

> the strategy wiki pages for descriptions of cart parts
> check the PAL version anyway, or a video, to take screenshots of menus

For the garage menu, which isn't easy to navigate you can't take screenshots of everything using that method, but if you want I can share my stuff as I have taken screenshots of every single part, screenshot showing the part, its name in Jap in game, and the translation.

If you're not patient and don't care about shitty framerate and cut cutscenes/content, just play the PAL version in English.

The MMX Collection version I haven't tried, but apparently it's the PAL version played at 60hz, which to me sounds like it'd have tons of speed/timing issues considering when I played the PAL version it seemed to play at the right speed, except with worse framerate.. but I could be wrong on that

A few other info and protips you won't find in FAQs:

- keep in mind you're not supposed to know what a car part does until you acquire it
- as shown in game, difficulty of courses increase every time you beat it. What isn't documented though, is that difficulty keeps increasing even if the difficulty bar is shown at max, it increases every time you beat Wily until you beat the game 4 times and earn all of Wily's car parts
- The Shadow Racers don't appear until you beat Wily once. Unlike FAQs claim, there doesn't seem to be a secret input to make them appear, instead they seem to appear at random and can appear in every course.
- Once you beat a shadow racer, the secret technique will be available for the entire game (VS, time attack, if you start another adventure mode etc), not just in your current adventure mode save. I don't know yet what this means for the secret parts that you're supposed to get after learning the techniques if you start another adventure mode afterwards.
- For the third secret technique, an FAQ claim you can get a turbo out of it. AFAIK that's BS, the technique just helps you get your car back to normal after a drift
- In adventure mode, you won't race the course allocated to the racer you chose. Meaning every character has a slightly different grand prix mode.
- For VS mode you can change difficulty of CPUs in the option menu. For VS and Time Attack there is a total of 3 tracks and 1 racers to unlock in adventure mode
- the 'real' ending with changed credits only shows up when you beat Wily 4 times

Protips:

- when you beat Wily for the first time, get his engine, it's the 2nd best after the secret one and it'll help you beat the shadow racers
- The shadow racers can seem really hard. To beat them, try in courses they're weak in and that you can exploit. For instance, play in Spring Man's course, make sure the plates remain as "deceleration zones" as long as possible, and use tires that aren't affected by deceleration zones.
- Undocumented: for the secret "retro engine" earned after beating the shadow racers, you can get an OP as fuck long ass turbo boost by tapping the X button. For the secret "blade tires", they can crush/destroy big targets like giant metools, turrets, etc


It's honestly a great, rather underrated. I beat it as Protoman, 100% with all 48 parts, and I already started playing again with Quickman.

If you've beaten a (or several) shadow racers in a Grand Prix save, the technique will be available for the entire game, however if you start another Grand Prix you still need to beat the shadow racers to earn the secret parts.
