incomprehensible? no, but it's chock full of dumb incoherences and lack of self-awareness even for a jump 'n shoot man game, perhaps especially for a jump 'n shoot man game. you're supposed to be in awe of the protagonists figuring sigma is involved when you've seen the fucker get copied RIGHT AT THE INTRO MOVIE and then you have the completely dumb motif that a reploid that can go 'maverick at will' is some sort of rocket science and not WHAT MAKES A REPLOID (a reploid is capable of making his own decisions, if he can't make BAD decisions then he's just a programmed flunkie like the classic robot masters).

also sigma is gone for good because lumine said something that is never even remotely possibly construed to "THIS is why he can't come back".

pick your strengths for the game as you like but X8's plot is one of the silliest, most convoluted messes the series ever saw trying to act like it's hot shit when it's just a dog chasing its own tail. I'll go with X7's blandness for a story over this because even if it's just another "asshole army fights the hunter" rethread where everyone got infected unlike X4, at least it didn't behave itself like it was being revolutionary.

which also reminds me: what could have made for something interesting in X8, following the character beat of Axl wanting X's approval, is completely tossed aside and he finds out he's some prototype and we're not shown the scene or how he reached the conclusion.

I think I'm finally starting to figure out the shadow racers in Battle&Chase.

I don't believe there is an input to make them appear, because they seem to appear at random even when I'm not pressing anything special or trying, so I think it's just random.

Also, difficulty increases each time you beat Wily and see the ending, even if the difficulty bar is at max, the AI becomes tougher, so if you want the secret parts, your best hope is to do it after beating Wily only once.
Highly recommended to get his engine first, it's OP.

At this point I only beat the first shadow racer and I know it's hopeless for the others, difficulty is at max now so winning a race while picking the hidden "?" for the secret parts is hopeless, let alone beating the shadow racers themselves which I can't.

Still would like to know if there is a better description to perform "rocket starts" on Jap sites because even after learning the technique I can only do it 1 time out of 10.

What exactly would Beck add to the game that the others don't already do along with their personal gimmicks?

The only way I could see him being unique is if he could use different weapons in the platforming sections outside the tank but I'm not sure the game can accommodate for that since no one else can.

Gigamix is fun, well written and I dig all the redesigns for their fun and creative takes on the characters, but Roll's design is easily my least favorite aspect of this whole thing. She's very genericute looking and doesn't have the cute hair or her cute MM8 outfit.

Yeah, that's why it's completely underwhelming. The fact you're supposed to feel completely free because you can damage enemies while flying but the effect is very understated to say the least is what makes it come so low in my impression of it.

Doesn't help that with you starting with Fourth Armor already you can air dash and crap, too

It had shit stage DESIGN, but the concepts introduced are pretty innovative. If you think about it X4 didn't do much of anything new with its stages at all other than the jetski. But in X5 you got disarming traps to open doors, jumping across exploding trucks under a time limit, destroying bombs before they blow up the stage and damage you, the entire level being a boss battle, all of that is pretty damn cool in hindsight.

Even the stage design itself isn't REALLY shit. It's just slower and more of a platformer. The Zero stages are some of my favorite designed X stages ever.

X4 is definitely not a great innovator but it had its share of novel gimmicks too. X5's concepts might be good, but they lend themselves more to aggravation than fun IMO. ESPECIALLY "the whole stage being a boss fight", McWhalen's stage is pretty shit exactly because of the slowness.

The bomb and lock gimmicks are nice, but the lock gimmicks are behind a paywall of shit that is the Ride Chaser stage wholly reliant on instant kills even more than X4's were and holy shit, that ties instantly with the BS that is getting the armor parts there and the armor parts on Necrobat with that inane 'puzzle' (more like timing annoyance) as well as a stage riddled with spike gimmicks.

And as someone else pointed out X5's stages weren't designed to even feel like you could go and explore crap expansively, you used Falcon to get a couple items and that was basically it.

Also I prefer weapon energy draining out and letting me know when I am going to fall out than Falcon that gives you no indicator.

It's really not the same thing, because when train cars exploded in X4 it was only for a second and the safe spot was right there. In X5 you're rushed to destroy and/or ignore as many enemies as possible in order to survive, with damn near no end in sight.

Only the highest rank gets you anything though. If you don't care about getting item upgrades it's meaningless.

I'll give you that, but X5 forced you to use it in order to survive a sea of lava so there's much more tension towards keeping the thing from exploding, whereas in X4 it's kinda underwhelming.

This is what will forever pain my brain when people say X5 was some Swan Song of quality for the X series and not a team of interns on a shoestring budget rushing something along.

You basically need to game over and go back to stage select some 8 times so you can get the most Boss Parts that you have NO WAY of knowing what you'll get after you beat a boss on the first time around.

This is fucking outright hostile to the player (as is forcing him to skip prompts of text instead of playing the game). Nothing else done by the guys who had history with the series, not even MM&B at the height of its dickishness, reached this level of broken.

The only comparable things that came to mind are the ZX map system, and the Cyber-Elf system. But the ZX map system was just a single mistake/oversight that unfortunately affects the whole game. Same for Cyber-Elves. The X5 systems is multiple mistakes acting in SYNERGY to be this bad.

What did we learn in X5? What new developments and implications occur? If you think about it, the core crisis (Eurasia) in X5 didn't even have anything to do with the Zero virus. Towards the end in becomes more about the Zero/Wily connection... and they do nothing with it. They even sort of reference Wily being alive, and do nothing with it even with it being planned as the "last" game. X6 had far more to do with Zero/Wily/Virus.

X6 has worse level design in general and most new ideas damage the actual gameplay like reploids that can be turned into mavericks being put in bullshit places or stage variations that just clutter the screen with shit. X5 never fucks up level design this badly(maybe the bike stage does) yet there are people that still have fun with the game due to the engine and physics and the overall feel they provide when you control the characters.

X4 is even worse than bias, but X5 is less painful considering you can use either character with any stage and where X4 was almost entirely built around Zero, some of X5 clearly favors X.

Skiver's stage makes it really hard to kill the bombs with Zero, and Izzy's stage is easier with Zero because of the tight spaces.

I think X5 is a good game on a basic level if you look only at the core mechanics, but most new additions where added awfully and really bring the game's quality down on the long run.

They do less damage than a normal Dash+Slash, at least in Zero 1. I really like how Zero looks at when playing at level 1 by a high skilled player, like a super agile glass cannon or something, it fits him really well.
