my first attempt at worldgen made the roads stupidly huge and there is nothing remotely useful nearby the bunker (I chose a fairly noob start to learn the game.)

also slightly related, android version of the same doesn't load tiles even on M8 with power saving off (cpu unlocked.) just pointing that out incase dev hangs here.

As for the chaos brand, it scales pretty great into late game, it ignores mr so you can petrify/sleep enemies on hit if the effect happens, obviously.. and you can just fuck them up like that

All the roads are like that. They are silly on foot (it takes almost two minutes to cross the road) but look okay with vehicles since most are around five tiles wide.

And no, if you want to melee things you gon' need you sum melee score. Mobs get very hard to hit otherwise. Especially if you ever want to see crits. Perception skills are pretty good supplements, though.

You can figure out how much is enough if you have loremaster, since it flat tells you what a monster's perception is, and the manual gives you the stealth calc. It is more than you can afford if you plan on also going melee/evasion.

Loremaster discovery carries over to subsequent chars. I used to enjoy stealthy hammerchargestabbing.

It kind of is training wheels, but that doesn't mean that deciding whether or not to take it is the same as graduating from being a newbie. You don't need it or lorekeeper, but the other methods aren't exactly perfect or efficient either. The ID game is pretty unfun to me.

Of course, you could just make your own shit and leave all that glowy crap on the dungeon floor where it belongs.

Well, I don't have a smart phone. I know it sounds weird, especially since I have a PSP and a 3DS, but I just don't get the appeal of smart phone gaming, and a regular phone is just enough for me for, well, phoning.

I'd say stick to the vampiric axe. While the warax of speed is also a good option it wont be as good because certain things that would make you swing faster wont affect it at all due to how fast you can already swing it. The Exec axe would be a good option but since your shields skill is already so high and you have an option to buy a very good shield i wouldnt take it.

Pretty nice drop
My standard offensive spell before this was an 8d8 bolt spell, so getting something that activates for 130+ damage is real nice.

It's surprising how actually-useful damage activations are in vanilla when I'm used to them all not even being worth the turn it takes to use them in PCB.

The main things that disqualify FTL from being a roguelike

1. Heavily modal to the point it's not recognizeable as a roguelike, any roguelike that breaks the non-modal rule only breaks it in a minor way.
2. Has roguelite features like unlocks.

3. Is a commerical game. This is actually a serious qualifier and not a meme, a game has to be pretty fucking roguelike to qualify if it's a paid game, because the game being free is a big proof of pure intentions and not just using "roguelike" as a meme buzzword like games being "just like Dark Souls". I closed the factory and turned it into my base, after days of mining to make cement and destroying terrain to make an access to the middle and get sunlight inside. It has 2 tiles wide concrete walls on almost all sides, and there is even a pool of water inside. The only downside is that it's so big that sometime zombies spawn inside, but nothing dangerous.

The question is related to broader Beogh tactics and strategies, so I'll go over that. I'm sure there are players better at Orc Jesus than me, but I think I've gotten the hang of it.

First of all, do not have all your followers with you at all times. What you want to do is have a handful or even a single dude with you in order to level them up in a safer environment than the "screen is filled with 100 orcs"-one. Remember that your orcs have to actually FIGHT to gain XP, not stand behind you and watch.

In the later parts of the game (Vaults, Depths) I only brought one Knight with me, when he got upgraded to Warlord I replaced him with another Knight.

Warlocks and High Priests die to anything, so prioritize the regular melee orcs.

Start gifting them good weapons when you can. Polearms are preferrable since the fights where you bring all your dudes in are a goddamn mess.

Don't use them at all in V:$ or E:$. So much damage flying across the screen at any given moment that you'll probably lose allies you don't want to lose. Since you're a Hill orc you are capable of soloing everything anyway, the Beogh business is just for roleplaying.

Oh and practice using the shout ('t') commands. Retreat, Follow and Attack are the most useful ones.

Actually skimming the thread again, it looks like Coolthulhu did a self-merge, which is kind of stepping on Kevin's toes a little bit. It's generally considered bad form to bypass the project lead and shove your code in, unexamined. That's drama bait.

His patch could very well be fine, but few projects can survive long if the programmers act like they can never make a mistake and don't need anyone to double check their code before a commit to trunk.

That's just an artifact of having a lot of different people working on the game.
And you'll note that the "zombies drop nasty clothes, wash 'em or get morale penalties for wearing them" thing was removed and put in a mod when the core devs agreed it was tedious and unfun. Some folks really liked it for some reason autism, but the devs told 'em "figure out a way to make it not suck all the fun out of things, and we'll consider adding it back"
CBM slots are also out, as they didn't work out acceptably. Plans are to re-add them if they can be done in a non-retarded way, because the alternate thing of being able to install every bionic ever is silly and broken.

New items are easy to create, you could make some yourself. The dev's general attitude is that as long as it fits the theme and doesn't break stuff or require special new code that you want them to write for you, they'll probably accept the items.

You have to remember there's only like three good coders working on this, and a larger number of novice coders who send in smaller patches. Fixing major systems is a big task that has little to do with accepting new items or minor patches, it mostly revolves around rewriting big chunks of the terrible spaghetti code that was inherited from Whales.

The expectations aren't the problem, it's a disagreement over whether this problem (guns suck unless you have very high skill) constitutes a serious enough problem to just throw unreviewed code at it.
Coolthulhu thinks it does, Kevin instead thinks they should work out a "correct" solution rather than just guess at something that sounds okay. Probably because with their workload, any "temporary" fix is probably going to be permanent for quite a while, so it's probably worthwhile to do it right the first time.

In the meantime, I'd suggest you guys just put all your points into rifles, they come in all the various ranges. Or use Coolthulhu's patch if you like.

If you're new to roguelikes, Brogue is a great pick for beginners (just don't think "easy to pick up" means "easy to win"). You could also try Pixel Dungeon on mobile.

If you're only slightly new and you feel like diving into larger, more complex, less streamlined games, Crawl is the most discussed game on the general and should entertain you for a long time. In order of complexity, I also suggest for example Infra Arcana, Sil, and Angband (which updated recently).

If you've been playing Crawl and other major games for a while, well shit, maybe check out the various flavor-of-the-month games? I dunno, maybe Forays. Or Demon? It updates often and it's really different from the usual roguelike.

The first few times you do extended, it's interesting as fuck. After that, it becomes clear as day that it's a slog.

Extended should only be done in like 1/20 winnable games, not even due to available loot but simply due to player fatigue/hubris/boredom.

I recommend you expand out each of those lines to a paragraph so you can see how bad they are.

For example, what do you think 'ambush' means? Do you think the goblin lieutenant is going to be saying "ambush him" in front of you, and you'll be thinking "ah yes good thing I spent all that time in the library reading how to speak goblinese, because now I can predict the enemy's behavior"? It's a fucking roguelike game. They can move towards you or away from you, and one of those actions is obviously correct in a particular circumstance.

I'd like to see more games that have neutral NPCs, and the ability to interact with monsters in terms of negotiation, but putting an extra language mechanic on top where you can't even use that feature unless you camp a library doesn't seem fun. I certainly don't want to be taking paper notes about a language simply because I'm smarter than my character.

It's good that you're thinking and trying, though. You have a lot of good ideas; just don't screw up development by polluting the game with bad ideas at the same time.

I think you could possibly do something with it, since it's effectively a non-item identification system. Maybe all spells are delayed and you only learn what the monster is actually doing when it goes off (or you buy the equivalent of a scroll of identify from the library).

Here's an example of what I've got in mind: The player deals heavy damage to a group of goblins. This particular group has a room with a trap deeper in the dungeon. If the player steps into the room, the goblins activate the trap. Knowing that "glarfnoc glabuz" means "lead him to the trap" gives the player advantage.
Similarly, the goblin leader could order a goblin archer to fire an explosive arrow at the player, because he's in the right position to do so without killing other goblins. Knowing it means "explosive arrow", and not "for the glory of <Goblin god>" is useful.
A third example: assume most goblins are cowards who flee at low health. But some groups are exceptions. In those groups, the goblin leader could shout "fight to the death" early during the battle. If the player knows it's not gibberish, he won't mistakenly think he can half-ass this particular battle.

I'm seconding the notion that this could make a neat rpg but wouldn't be too hot in a roguelike where you lose all your progress when you die. Especially if the player is supposed to be able to learn the meaning of words without his in-game character knowing. Well you're not getting that feature done with less than 2000 lines of code, that's for sure.

Overall it seems like the kind of thing that you'd want the player to enjoy all of the time, rather than just when they happen to come across the right language book (and have enough time to study it before the relevant event happens).

Not 'unfun', but just kinda nothing. I put in book in my inventory in order to appreciate some overwrought conlang system at some later point in the game, and then just do nothing about it until my character learns the language. Oh, but sometimes the meaning of a word will be 'obvious', or I'll have telepathy, or an ally will tell me.

Not that I'm under any illusions that you can, will, or have written even a single line of code for this project, but you really should consider the scope of this project. This is getting into URR-levels of blatant unfeasibility for what amounts to a generic dungeon crawler that has a language gimmick.

Really though, whether languages can be learned by spending 1000 turns studying or immediately but only at character generation, that's a detail. Ideally it should come down to an interesting decision.

I'll admit I'm daydreaming right now, but I've already made and finished some games, and my next project is going to be a roguelike. Currently I'm reading up on documentation and the likes.

I'll definitely try to simplify the idea as much as possible, and I'll keep you guys updated if I ever implement it.
