God damn it. I just finished a Nemelex Wizard, I wanted to try something else (Maybe Kiku? Sif? Vehemut?)
But finding this fucker on Dungeon 2 makes it awfully tempting.
I think I might just save this file and restart, using it when I want to play another nemwiz.

found the rat

for the guy who was asking about mellis, gods in Ivan get angry based on the difference between them and the other gods you pray to, and some get angry faster than others. as long as you start them off with some offerings they tend to stay happy if you just keep praying every 2.5 hours. personally I like getting mellis Lori seges dulcis and Atavus since they tend to stay happy after the first set of offers. you're limited by the alters you find but polymorph can help make different ones

Welp, my razorgirl died. She survived longer than I thought she had any right to.

Even freezing and terribly wounded and with her arms broken already on day 2 (and 0 medical skill to make a splint with) she tore through a zombie soldier, a brute, and a shocker, as well as some other miscellaneous Zs, stunlocking them and slicing them to bits.
She was suffering teleport sickness from the damned Mi-go, however, and she suddenly teleported through the wall of a library I came to loot, and that's how she discovered there was a roadblock with turrets set up on the front side. Even then, she managed to run further than I expected before she died from the hail of bullets.

Apparently that razorboy/girl profession is pretty decent because she blew right through a number of nasty situations where most of my early characters would have died on the spot. That subdermal alloy armor made her hard to kill, and adding slashing damage on top of martial arts is fun.
7/10 maybe not the most optimized starting character I've played, but way fun.

Just started DCSS, going with a Gargoyle Earth Elementalist.

Anything I should know?
>>
>>181503143
Walk away from monsters that look dangerous whenever possible.
Rest to recover your MP after fights.
It's important to pick up stones to fuel sandblast, a ridiculously good and mana efficient spell.
Don't use sandblast against enemies wearing heavier armour, use stone arrow or Rapid Deconstruction for that.
Eat corpses of dudes after killing them before eating your rations.
Train only earth with a tiny bit of conjurations, fighting, and dodging. Get enough spellcasting to have spell levels to memorize all your spells.
Do not underestimate passwall, it is an extremely good escape spell if you know the layout of the level.
Petrify is extremely good, either use it to escape from single foes, block corridors, or petrify a nearby monster, then when its friends come by, Rapid Deconstruction it up to hurt the friends and heavily damage the petrified guy.
Stick to armour which is lighter than ring mail, try to keep your spell failure rates lower than 10%, and ideally lower than 4%.
Pray at a vehumet or okawaru altar when you find one.

Hope that helps, good luck, don't die.
>>
>>181503658
How do I tell which ones have armour?
>>
>>181480608

Press 'x', move your cursor over the monster, and it will list what the monster is wearing/wielding. You can also press 'v' for more information. I recommend doing this a lot if you are new. Knowing what monsters are capable of is important. Mainly only humanoids wield weapons.

Oh also, if you see an orc, try and lure it around a corner. Orcs often spawn in packs, and one early orc monster is the orc priest, who can hit you for up to 17 damage (which ignores AC and magic resistance) whenever you have him in view. This is extremely dangerous for a gargoyle who trades HP for really strong natural AC.

You want to have them in sight for as short a time as possible, and be hitting them with spells whenever that are.
>>
>>181504220
Welp, just got nuked by an Orc priest, you weren't kidding haha

>>181441116
Minmay seems to have a specific vision of the game and he's smart enough to provide arguments for this vision. He's also autistic enough to be completely sure that he's right and you're wrong, so there's the problem. At least his autism does some good things sometimes, like his code dives to explain some mechanics and formulas of Crawl, and the code base of Crawl isn't exactly the most readable one in the world.

How important is stealth for (octopode) casters?
I imagine being able to walk around a few corners and having enemies forget about you, letting you rest up your mana again, is pretty powerful.
But I'm a badplayer and don't know how useful stealth is in general for non-stabbers.
>>
>>181509008
Stealth is equally useful for anyone. Want to avoid that adder on D:2? Here you go. Want to avoid that caustic shrike pack in Depths? Here you go. Want to avoid those two fiends over there in the random Pan level? Stealth to the rescue.

Basically, stealth is tremendously useful very early on, then its usefulness decreases for anything that isn't a stabber as the game goes (and carrying the orb halves your stealth anyway), then it's useful once again in Pan and to lesser extent in Hells.

That said, casters make a lot of noise on their own, so remember to lure things away from unexplored territory unless you want to attract more things at the same time. By the way, the noise meter is a great addition to the game.

I was using DejaVu for a long time since it has outstanding unicode plane coverage, however, I am using Fira now (see >>181509665 >>181507415 ) and liking it quite a bit.
Many people go with ubuntu mono, it's a great font with good character support and comes standard on pretty much everything.

I also like Liberation, but a lot of people seem to dislike it for some reason and the character support is not great.

Grey draconian with ring of ice in inventory in need of spell advice. Where do I go from this? I've got a lovely bunch of utility now, but I'm clueless on the effectiveness of higher level spells (because I splat around lair always)
>>
>>181512697
Don't you recognize them from TV? Otherwise you should ask for a quick rundown I suppose
>>
Ice Form is much better than people give it credit for.
- No casting penalties, and since it melds armor, you may actually get better spell chance if you wear something heavier than a robe.
- You can cast Ozocubu's Armor on top of it for some reason.
- Not just rC+, but rC+++. Also rPois, 20% HP and enough AC to not make the loss of robe + aux armor AC noticeable at all, making it possibly a defensive boost spell for casters.
- Doesn't even lower EV for large races.
- Brings your move speed to 1.0, meaning it makes frogs and nagas actually faster, like Spider Form.
- Makes you swim, deep water included, so you can kite monsters into water where they will fumble their attacks or use it to run away.
- Raw damage per aut is the same as statue form, without counting the freezing brand bonus.
- Freezing brand slows a lot of things in Lair, including hydras.

>>
>>181513769
You want IMB and swiftness.
Throw icicle is a decent single target conjuration, but nothing special.
>>
>>181513854
I'll work on getting those, thanks.
But what makes IMB more valuable than Force Lance?
>>
>>181512835
Air spells are a waste because of your apt. Just get IMB or Throw Icicle (latter is better but useless against rC+ monsters) and train some fighting skills (weapon, fighting, dodging) in the meantime. Alternatively you can get neither of these and rely on Fulminant Prism while waiting for later Vehumet gifts, but if you say you're bad, you'd probably do better with switching Prism with one of those mentioned above.

Aww..
>>
>>181514016
Force lance is a fun spell, but its best element is the pushback, not the damage. I'm not saying "don't get it", but if you want to do damage to dudes, you should grab IMB.

Swiftness is, no joke, one of the best spells in the game. Use it to escape from dudes, use it to reposition to a hallway or some shit, use the fuck out of it on the orb run. It's amazing. Just don't use it unless you expect most of your next 15 or so turns to be movement turns.

I really want to make difficult rougelike that show inspiration from the ones. Just modernize it. Maybe normies will actually like them. Just the interface puts them off.
>>
>>181514918
the interface won't lure in normies, the whole genre is too autistic. If you decide to a make a roguelike and modernize it remember to not pander to normies since it won't work

I forgot to take a picture of my equipment, and the recording goes out of sync halfway through.

However I can tell you I had:

+3 Axe of Fireborn Slaying
+10 Ring of Regeneration
+3 Ring of Regeneration
-1 Plate armor
+3 Staff of Tunneling
+4 Staff of Firebolt
+3 Staff of Entracement
+2 Telepathy charm

First time trying a regeneration build, they seem incredibly strong once you get going. Low tier weapons aren't bad when you can just tank enemy damage till you can deal your own.

I think I saw one spider and one toxic enemy on this seed too, the only counter to regeneration.

Scariest moment was an Agile Tentacle Horror popping out a door 2 tiles from me, but I was close to lava and had entracement. Yay for dickery.

Octopodes +4 stealth aptitude means stealth is basically free and is it's biggest defense in the earlygame.

Op isn't so bad in 1v1 situations but any group fighting will probably put you in a bad spot, so stealth allows you to pick and choose your battles. I've asked Yermak this(best player of the 0.18, 0.19 tournaments) and he gave pretty much the same advice.

just because you train stealth doesnt mean you have to run away from EVERY SINGLE enemy, anon

Slaying isn't actually a separate roll.

https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/source/attack.cc#L1299

It gets applied at basically the same time as weapon enchantment, so slaying really is exactly the same as enchantment.

enchantment as a whole including bonuses/penalties from slaying and corrosion IS a separate roll from the weapon's base damage, though

>>
>>181574210
I agree with the first part of his argument, which is that a term from a specific real-world religion (which hasn't had its content absorbed into standard medieval fantasy) is misplaced in Crawl.

It seems that the actual decision-making was based more on political correctness rather than genuinely good reasons, but since you /pol/ shitheads are too busy 15-runing and terraforming here to actually contribute (whining 6 months after the fact doesn't count), I guess you shouldn't expect to get the game you want.

>Can't have fun flavour because a specific demographic may get upset about it
>Can't have fun new content without it first being neutered into some shitty bastardization of the original concept
>Can't have fun because people play Crawl to gather e-points
This is the end game right? leech all fun from the game, makes me think that the developers may just be a bunch of Grynches
>>
>>181575925
What you complained about is nothing but a strawman anyway. Here's the actual quote from the guy who pushed the commit:

>First: Jihad seemed like an exceptionally overt reference to real-world religion. We do have various other references to real religions around (Mara, the Robe of Night, etc), so obviously there's no hard-and-fast rule against such references; Jihad was right on the border.

>Second, I think the word 'zealot' is extremely cool and flavourful, and approve of using it whenever possible. It seemed like a straight improvement on all axes to rename Jihad to Zealot's.

Actual Arabs in the thread are saying that they want more references to their culture, so yes this is all the result of SJW concern trolls, but that doesn't change the fact that they're putting forth good reason (or at least excuses) for the changes they want, while you aren't.

Also you need to get away from the notion that calling people a developer is some kind of insult, especially if you're dissatisfied with the sort and amount of roguelike development going on.

These screams deal ((1d2)*(1d2)*(1d3) + 1d3 + 1)*(XL/27) damage. In theory, this can deal up to 16 damage, but is far more likely to be around 5-10 at XL27, and even less for earlier characters. There is a 10% chance per scream that the damage will be doubled; however, damage is still capped at 16. You still haven't responded to what I'm complaining about anon. You're the only one "straw manning" here. I've already said I don't care, multiple times, about the name of the sword. What's annoying is the way they take these things seriously, and the types of arguments used to justify it. If you look at the thread you can clearly see that people are making the argument that complaining about censorship is censorship, and those comments were upvoted.

I'm calling you a developer because you keep defending them by shaming me for being le evil /pol/ nazi (even though nothing I've said indicates that I browse /pol/) and repetitively accuse me of having no argument for wanting to keep the sword's name when I don't even care about that and have said so many times already. This is behavior that the autistic devs show whenever someone criticizes them of their removal Jihad, which is why I am insulting you by calling you a dev.

I don't expect you to give an honest response and you'll probably straw man me, accuse me of having no argument, or tell me I shouldn't even care about the issue. You can only deflect.

>>
>>181594481
Does that not annoy you? Once upon a time, a game was changed only when it was patched or added to in some way. Now games get censored, and that's what this is, albeit minor but censorship nonetheless.
>>
>>181594176

It's not the SJW shit that annoys me. It's the obsession with removing everything that requires critical thinking to understand. It's not the Sword rename that I care about but the overanalyzation of features, and then the "refinement" of them which usually involves their removal (Jihad was just a rename). If you dispute this logic they won't listen because they want to virtue signal about how much better they are at following a misinterpretation of a design document.

Look at the new monk "god" that one dev recently added, it was stripped of all it's fun as the development went on because its much easier to remove everything than to add something creative.

The result of all this is a game that's constantly being dulled down over time. I doubt any people will play it in 5 years, except for the addicts.
>>
>>181594704
It's no different from them changing giant newt to whatever it is now, with the logic somewhere around the new name is clearly superior because it came from my massive, enlightened, game-designing brain.
>>

Lel, well the haste and health wand wasn't an unreasonable removal. The way the DCSS devs remove things is like someone trying to kill a terrorist by firing into a crowd full of civilians and then pretentiously justifying every death by ranting about having superior game design skills.
>>
>>181596437
Honestly I agree up to a point. There's obviously no real crawl dev master plan, so stuff just gets removed when a dev decides he doesn't like it or added because a dev had an idea. For example Forceful Dismissal got removed as bloat the same patch Gell's Gravitas was added. On the whole though I think the game keeps getting better, and the worst excesses of "removal" culture are by tavern shitposters who the devs thankfully (usually) ignore.
>>
>>181597172

I don't see it getting better. It's stagnant at best, decaying at worst. Maybe crawl doesn't need to be updated anymore. I feel like they're endlessly polishing a finished project. Updates are mostly good for changing the game up a little bit so people can keep playing it after all these years.
>>
I've started losing my roguelike virginity with Brogue and POWDER (on PSP). Pretty comfy games. At first I died at each almost at the first enemy.

My question is: will I be able to get rid of the Evil sword once equipped in POWDER or I'm stuck with it for the rest of the game?

A more general question: I usually play crawlers and RPGs in a way that I try to clear every single area before I advance further. Is it a good strategy in roguelikes also, or grinding is not as important here?
>>
>>181596374

Based a lot around your position and giving you special movement and all that. Basically added a lot more than just "run up and hit enemy until they die". They cut A LOT of it.

DM is ass to me for a variety of reasons, lack of character progression, the main features are just bloated RNG spots that are all pretty much the same, when you die you propagate your next character but it just boils down to running through the same dungeons over and over again. There are only a few viable builds too, and there are not a lot of sprites/weapon/armor models.

I hate games that try to use reincarnation as a feature but lack the depth to make dying an experience/fun. So it just fails.

There is no compelling reason for Orb of Zot to exist. The player could just stay on the designated tile where the orb was previously placed for 2 turns and the ascension run could still start all the same. In the end, the orb is just another cognitive load for the player and occupies design space where it's not necessary; in other words, plain tedium.
>>

Runes don't need to exist either, just have foot panels to activate them. Trigger x num foot panels to unlock zot. Orb of zot can become some sort of enlightenment that you gain, ties in with crazy yiffer following you out at the end. Also your esp causes monsters to follow you out.

Oh yeah, hulks are nasty in current DDA. I wouldn't sleep in a town until I was reasonably sure there were no hulks in it.

I believe metal walls will stop them from entering. Also I think they only do the Kool-Aid Man thing when they're alerted, probably following your scent trail in this case.
If you're going into an area with zombies, don't go straight from your base to them. Instead take nice long U-shaped path so they follow your scent in the wrong direction -- zombies are dumb and will often miss a turnoff and just keep going.

In general, though, clear the area if possible.

In POWDER, you can remove curses by praying or using a Scroll of Remove Curse (as long as it isn't, itself, cursed).

I think dipping the item into holy water works too? I'm not sure if that's possible with gear you're already wearing.

(Brogue has Scrolls of Remove Curse as well, and if you're desperate, Enchanting and Protecting an item will also lift the curse.)

I recommend exploring whole floors in Brogue unless doing so would put you at major risk. If there's a bunch of Ogres in a room, and you don't have obvious ways to kill them (like a Caustic Gas trap + Net trap combo), don't bother, unless they're in the way of the exit, or guarding vital items (Enchantment, Strength, Life).

Strongest is probably gray mage, though this requires some knowledge about which spells are not total garbage and worth learning, since a lot of them aren't. High mage is good but boring to me since you are forced to take a mostly offensive realm.

Sorcerer is made of half-eaten paper and dies if a monster thinks about looking at you.

Not really possible until I have an armored vehicle. But I fucked up and settled too close to the city, I have 3 loot piles with my tools and stuff that are too dangerous to get now, I will probably just leave this town and do my things in the woods as usual.

sorcerer is actually probably the easiest and most powerful mage variant in the early game

they start to suck hard once you run into enemies who actually have dangerous ranged attacks though (e.g. ancient dragons), because their class "feature" is having less HP than anything else in the game

Any tips for getting into it? I lasted maybe 30 minutes on my first run, before encountering a horde of zombies and being trapped in it and dying a horrible, painful death.
>>
>>181651345
probably pretty bad
trump has some neat spells but you definitely don't want to play as an EXCLUSIVE summoner
maybe combine it with an offensive realm that gets some good ball spells

or if you wanna go full summony, play as a Quylthulg or a Necromancer
>>
>>181665538
xcom apocalypse style graphics would be comfy imo
>>
>>181666783
Don't skimp out on strength, agility and dodge in character creation, acquire a martial art (eskrima is good for newbies) and keep torso and arm encumbrance low in game.

Engage zombies one at a time. If you get surrounded, remember to run (" key) and get a better position. Spears allow you to attack from one tile away! Also, run away from difficult peds like spitters and smokers early in game.

Really, how you wanna play the game is up to you, but I find CDDA to work best when played "nomadically", meaning you have a vehicle that functions as your mobile base of operations while you travel across the map in search of loot and adventure. This way you also have a way to unload loot while keeping encumbrance down (essential for early game melee). One of your first goals should always be to track down a working car!

Look into vehicle modification also. One of the most fun aspects of the game by far is the ability to construct vehicles, and even complex mechanical mechanisms (spotlights, electrical generators, etc) using the vehicle construction menu. You can go full blown Mad Max if you want.

Oh, also, build a homewrecker for busting down walls! That way you're guaranteed entry into gun shops, among things. Damn, this is such an extensive game that I could list probably fifty more useful tips, but I don't wanna take away from your experience either. Finding your own path to becoming an unstoppable God of the apocalypse is what makes the game so great!
>>
>>181665538

A couple guys are working on a stonesense-like viewer using Unity:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chYMVKrYqNc

>>181666783

Get yourself a melee weapon, avoid large groups of zombies. Don't be afraid to run. Get lots of pockets, but watch your encumbrance, the more stuff you wear the worse you'll be at fighting and running. Shopping carts are the best until you get a car. Nailboard traps are cheap, and useful -- put a few in your cart and drop 'em to lead nastier zombies through.

Always put a point in dodge at the start, it greatly increases your survivability. For newbies I suggest putting more in skills, for veterans stats are much more valuable. Still high stats won't help if you die on the first day because you're new and have no skills to rely on.

It's a genuine roguelike, but it's not very good. The animations are complete garbage, and the game grinds to a halt whenever there are more than a few enemies on screen, since it plays each of their turns sequentially instead of instantaneously.

It's a good introduction, or something to waste some time on if you can get it cheap, but you'd be better off playing DCSS/tome4/basically anything that gets posted in these threads.

>>
>>181680310
It feels a bit tedious since there isn't as much variation between playthroughs, and you can get assguttered pretty bad on higher difficulties. Also, some/many people really hate the artstyle, though I like it.

Other than that it's probably my favorite roguelike.
>>
>>181680530

It was 100 floors at one time. Entrance to depths was on floor 30 though. The extra 70 floors was a bug that they left in because crawl devs are shit.

Their solution to it was by boarding the entrance to the next 70 off with rock and metal walls but you could get into it if you tele or shatter past the walls.
>>
>>181680530
Prior to 0.14, the Dungeon was 27 floors deep, with the Realm of Zot located on D:27. The Depths were introduced to help better control the amount of experience a player acquires throughout the game, and to help force the player to explore side-branches earlier in the game.

There was also an underground river in lair that you could take to get into the icy hell early on and the monsters would be scaled to be less powerful. Still are gateways to hell in lair sometimes.

You could find a secret hatch on D1 leading to ZOT if you searched enough (searching is now removed).

>>181681030
Would be better if it was optimal to go into lair as soon as you find it and not after D:11-12

Also "force the player to explore side branches" would hold more weight if there were more side branches. Game is very linear right now and you really only ever have 2 options on where to go at any given point in the game.
>>
>>181685027
force all 4 branches every game, or new branches
>>
>>181685027

Crawl is supposed to be linear. Muh "remove any mystery or ambiguity from game"

Exactly 3 stairs generated per floor too.
>>
>>181685712
Linearity makes balancing incredibly easy though.
You don't have to worry about branches being too difficult/easy at different points in the game if you just force the player into them at the right time.
>>
>>181686334

>fight monsters you can beat
>level up

Well, hell, my Black Belt character, the appropriately named Jamar Hammer, was kicking ass and taking names all across the wasteland up until this damn Firefighter PBA mask failed to protect me from these riot control bots' tear gas/relaxation gas. (I guess because it's badly damaged - it says 30 environmental protection for eyes/mouth when activated, but it didn't seem to work too good)
Now he's choked to death from the tear gas. I was doing hits off my oxygen tank but to no avail. Nothing seems to clear it.
I don't remember this stuff being quite so nasty, did it get buffed since 0.C?
>>

>>
>>181686558
You don't have a gas mask? Should just let him arrest you
>>
>>181687510

I had a firefighter PBA mask, it's basically a battery powered gas mask. 40 environmental protection as long as it's got power, and it last over an hour.

I allowed him to arrest me until I could grab the mask from my cart, wear, and activate it, then started running as soon as the relaxation gas effect broke.
Huh. I wonder if one of those bots fired off tear gas due to the approaching zombies or something while I was dealing with the relax gas, and I caught some before I got the mask on?
Still seems like I got a massive dose considering it killed me.

Next time I run into one of those things I'll have to remember to take it more seriously. In previous versions I considered them little more than a cheap source of good electrical parts.

Summer Games Done Quick. It's part of Games Done Quick, an organization that speedruns games for """charity""" twice a year. Lots of trannies and their orbiters in high places there. They used to enjoy fun and runners could do what they wanted on stream, now it's PG as heck. Pic related.

It would be neat if the anti-PC people did their version of this sort of thing, but I guess goys are simply incapable of roguelike development.

indie game dev here ben though probably no one will believe me

I've heard this sentiment before, but all the anti-PC games are usually just done in protest of x new PC dogma and aren't fun after an hour or so (since they're just meant to be jokes not things people get into).

On edgy nazi youtube vids I watch there's at least 20,000 or so people who have watched them. Thinking about making games for that market, my fear is that the game will be a flop (many games are even when good) that will ruin my reputation and I won't be able to go back to normie games even if I fail.

It's risky af senpai. Maybe I could publish through a middleman but I'd still probably get doxxed.

Assuming the player can pick the result with certainty... If you haven't seen the other items, they aren't identified, so reshaping a Staff of Firebolt into a "walnut staff" is a gamble at best.

According to the rarity of the scroll, I can see it working differently.
>RARE
>Pick an item. You may transform this item into a different item of your choice within the same category.
>UNCOMMON
>Pick a result. If you're lucky, this is the result. Otherwise you get a random result.
>AVERAGE
>Result is chosen at random within the category.

And I can see the following effects.
>Enchantment remains the same
>Equipment changes types
>Runic equipment changes runics instead
>Number of coins in a pile is randomized.
>Potions can't turn into Life or Strength
>Scroll can't turn into Enchantment
>If an old wand had already lost charges, the new wand may, too. (A 50% empty Wand of Slowing turning into Empowerment has 50% chance of having no charge.)

I assume randomization would tie into item generation chances, as well.

Finally it might be better to call the scroll "Transmutation", or to make randomization an effect Wands of Polymorphism produce when the bolt hits an item.

You guys know you can just look on github and SEE what they're doing, right?

http://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/commits/master

Coolthulhu just fixed a longstanding bug that could cause a crash when removing armor, for one thing. Firearms/ranged weapons are being reworked right now -- the old code was dumb and made them ridiculously accurate. The new code is more realistically modeled but as a side effect has made ranged weapons grossly inaccurate beyond three or four tiles right now, and a lot of stuff needs to be adjusted to fix that.
Most of those vehicle problems are fairly intractable ones that will require a total rewrite of how vehicles are handled. It's doable, but it's not going to be in 0.D unless somebody steps up and starts working on it right now.

Also most of the new content comes from modders, not the core contributors.

The codebase is currently in a low-key feature freeze, with emphasis being put on fixing things before 0.D is released. That's why virtually every commit you see there is some form of bugfix or general maintenance/improvement thing.

(If I could still code like when I was 20, I'd probably jump in and try to fix some of the terrible NPC bugs long before I tried to tackle the mostly-functional vehicle stuff. Or perhaps help Coolthulu out with the Z-level stuff, which from what I gather requires a long tedious job of de-spaghettifying some of the oldest code in the game.)

Just like last year.
>>
>>181737670

The gun rewrite's not exactly Coolthulhu's thing, though it was important for Z-levels anyway. The old gun code was, well, kind of retarded. It worked okay, but was full of limitations and quirks that had to be worked around.
Z-levels are sort of working right now, but finishing them out requires a lot of work. I think Coolthulhu's doing it bit by bit, interspersed with general fixes and other stuff to avoid burnout. Can't say I blame him, the codebase is pretty big.

Plus that bug he fixed today is one that has bit me many times, so I gotta say I'm happy with his work.

>>181738409

I don't know what you mean by that. It seems to me CDDA's chugging along just fine. Sure it sucks that they had to break guns in order to fix them, but that's just life. Sometimes you have to tear down a shitty building before you can put up a good one.

You're weird. Next release will be when the blocker bugs for 0.D are squashed. There were like 141, now we're down to, I think it was 25, last I checked.
Like most of these roguelike games, they release when it's ready. Not that it matters since virtually everyone just plays the latest experimental anyway.

>>181740129

More or less, you can compare 0.C and the latest experimental and see. There was work on an interface for mods, improvements to the UI and inventory management, some new features, and a lot of stuff reworked or rebuilt.

>>181740167

>stamina
I dunno, I think being able to run and get winded adds a nice dimension to the game, especially since running away from things is such a big part of the early game.
I can see your point with aiming, though -- they could probably have left that out.
>>
>>181740167
at least the game is not as bloated as DCSS that with every "update" the devs only have to remove stuff instead of add new things
>>
>>181724047
It's not just int but also mechanics skill, first aid skill, and i think a bit of electronics skill as well.

So read an entire library before trying.

As long as the chance is below 20% there will be no permanent downsides to failing (you'll just lose hp and possibly lose the bionic you were installing), but if it's above that you can do shit like accidentally destroying your already-installed bionics.

>>
>>181728870
I've won Brogue maybe five times and Pixel Dungeon twice, but I've done fifty times more runs in Brogue, I'm fairly sure.

The game is brutal. But you can win most runs as long as you weigh your options carefully and don't get limited by what's obvious.
Example protip: USE YOUR DARTS. USE THEM. And any javelins you get. I mean beyond triggering traps and killing pit bloats (don't wast them on caustic bloats, just kill those behind doors and leave the room). Shit will kill Conjurers whose blades are fucking you up, it will get rid of lone far-away vampire bats in emergency situations, it will soften spiders and centipedes you can't otherwise take on, it will let you deal damage when 1v1ing something through confusion gas... and even though melee attacks don't work diagonally through walls, or while you're stuck in crystal, thrown weapons do work, just like magic bolts. Exploit the shit out of that.

>>181734694
As soon as I figure out Brogue modding I'll post something. That might take a while.

>>181744790
There is a lot of raukos in the deeper floor, and after you kill enough with rauko-bane they just run on sight from you so you gain some safety and time, also there's all the unique Rs.
>>
>>181746817
Yep. Hueg protection, halved crits against them, and they go and run away when you almost kill them.
>>
>>181746872
Can you take Bane multiple times for different species?
>>
>>181726005
You can already refund an item and it's not unreasonable to do so at lower depths at least once. Conmutation also exists.

If you want to "fix" vaults according to your design you need to redesign them, and perhaps the whole game up. The kind of thing you suggest is just a messy patching
>>
>>181746973

>>
>>181746973

>>
>>181748218
Well, it's pretty strong. I'm tempted to go full bully on 3-4 later species, but the problem is that Morgoth isn't a species.
>>
>>181748435
Well it depends if you wanna win or *WIN*
>>
>>181749631
Honestly, I only ever got to the throneroom once and it dawned on me that I had no idea how to convert sleeping V into a Sil. Looking at his stats, I would guess that actually killing he ass would require a specialized sharpness build and eating all the buffs.
>>
>>181749847
actually killing him involves singing song of slaying and getting a fuckhueg bonus from killing all the chumps in the throneroom
>>
>>181749631
>>181749982
I've not seen much info on this. How do you get a Sil, and is it possible to do it without using massive brute force? I guess not, since it literally hands you a mattock to use.
>>
>>181750253
>How do you get a Sil
step 1 make morgy drop his crown
you can do this by hitting him enough (knocking the crown off is way easier than killing him outright) or go classic Luthien-style and sing him to sleep so it slips off his head

step 2 attempt to pry the silmaril
you just have to be able to do damage through the crown's high armor value. song of sharpness and/or an artifact with sharpness are popular for this but not absolutely necessary
if you want a cooler win you can pry up to all 3, but each one is more difficult from the last and your weapon is guaranteed to break on one of them. also having more silmarils makes the ascension run more difficult
>>
>>181750656
>and sing him to sleep so it slips off his head
He was already asleep when I got there. That's kind of counter-inuitive. Still, at least it's an alternate option.

>you just have to be able to do damage through the crown's high armor value
It's like 25 points or so, isn't it? I sometimes thing a stealth build ought to sneak down, gather shit, then come back up and spec for the required damage, but I've never actually done it, so i'unno.

Also I'm using a greataxe for the first time and suddenly I don't feel like a weak little baby.
>>
>>181751036
He is unaware, not sleeping. But if you get to the throne room with a melee guy you shouldnt have too much trouble cutting one sil for the win. Pure stealth you have to get song of Lorien or you cant get a sil (or probably high will+staff of slumber can work too, never tried)
>>
>>181751732
Hm. That's interesting, because stealthing down there is pretty easy. Maybe I'll try that after I splat this 4-str lunkhead.
>>
>>181751036
non melee guys just need to spend some xp on song of sharpness, which allows you to cut through the crown's armor even with inferior limp edain wrists

>>
>>181746194
Nah that was an exaggeration.
I think I had about 100, 200 runs in Pixel Dungeon. (I'll go check if I find a way to revive my old phone.)
I must have about a thousand in Brogue. Not too crazy considering I've been playing the game for five years, with a two-year hiatus.

>>181747215
>You can already refund an item and it's not unreasonable to do so at lower depths at least once.
Who does this except beginners? Yeah, maybe you spend 200 turns wearing a Ring of Light and figure maybe it's not so good and then switch but that's not what I'm talking about. If you're on D3 you're certainly not going to figure out how useless or redundant your stuff will be on D14.

>Commutation
Is a rarity. If there was one guaranteed commutation vault on D13-20 per run I'd agree, but you can't gamble on it in the game's current state.
Not to mention backtracking to a commutation vault, or holding on to your mediocre items until then, is absurdly risky too.
Which is why I also think commutation should be more common AND/OR delivered in the form of a consumable, not a static room. That's assuming polymorphing items doesn't become a thing. (Actually, polymorph rooms could make for great vaults...)
>>
>>181761391
>Who does this except beginners?
People who regularly win/trascend the game
>>
>>181761649
In the past, I've grabbed a Charm of Haste or a Wand of Firebolt or a Wand of Teleportation from a vault to deal with a bunch of monsters I couldn't have handled otherwise. I use these items for a while and then I put them back and I pick what actually goes well with my build instead. On occasion I've also grabbed a weapon from a D1-5 vault, slaughtered a bunch of rats to figure if it was runic, and put it back if it turned out to be uninteresting.

Is this what you're talking about?

Because that's completely irrelevant to what I'm saying about Commutation and late game builds.

Unless you mean something else, in which case I'm all ears.
>>
What do you use commutation for? All I've done is maybe swap some naturally enchanted crap item with a broadsword or similar.

>>181775165
>can you still light a twig on fire and then queue up 20 hours of batch-crafted cooking before the fire burns out in 2 turns?

Last time I tried, yeah. Devs are aware, but until fire works better it's gonna stay, because having your crafting interrupted 20 times to relight your stupid fireplace would also be unrealistic, and would have the added bonus of being annoying as hell gameplay-wise too. As is, it's up to players to decide if they want to build a "realistic" fire first, or just cheese the hell out of it with a bit of splintered wood.

I cheese like hell, even pulling the wood out of the fire and reusing it for every subsequent fire, giving me infinite fire.

>>181809446
evidently not, thread is still page 9
>>
>>181809330
aw man I appreciate the effort but now my experiment is ruined
I needed 749 posts for it to work

And technically I guess that it wouldn't work forever, considering that there is a post-deletion cooldown after 5 but I could technically achieve immortality with a dead thread by bumping it when it gets to page 10, then deleting the posts after a couple minutes when the board has moved
still it's only good in theory
>>
New:

>thread gets bumped once gets back to page 1
>the next post triggers the autosage

>repeat ad nauseam

It's useless since the only thing you'd be doing is literally keeping a dead thread alive and it's very fragile since if anyone else posts you break the balance unless they remove their own posts too.

It's just a cool idea, if not lichform, it's clearly the equivalent of casting Death's door over and over.
