Are you sure? I looked at the """stat cards""" and it said the shot got 110~mm of pen, which would make it simple AP round with no explosive charge.
M61 is the base round for the 75 shermans and it fucking murders everything when it pens so it's obviously not that.
A big problem I noticed however is that the gun is horribly innacurate and it's kinda lucky to land a shot even with proper compensation for the distance.

But once you get the Cent Mk.1, it's a completely different game. And it just keeps getting better, with the 20pdr APDS, 105mm APDS and HESH, 120mm APDS and HESH and the Vickers MBT which is a 5 second reload, 105mm HESH throwing glass cannon.

APDS is the only redeeming feature for the comet. Agility, armour and reverse speed is unheard off for both. Ammunition placement is ridiculous, and the hull is practically made from shells. The crew are so tightly compact that anything that shoots you will kill you. Not to mention, the Avenger only has 4 crew, and are as tightly compact as the Comet, so there's even a lesser chance of surviving. AND the turret rotation is worse than the Tetrarch.

Aside from that, they can get to 40km/h fairly quickly, so you should cap bases and gtfo.
