Hawke was a good protagonist, but he/she's a shit RPG character. You play them, you don't roleplay them. I prefer both the Warden and the Inquisitor for writing purposes for this reason, because there's more room to make the character mine.

There's too many juicy plot lines that s/he is directly tied to to just abandon it to someone else.
