Personally, i think it's a variation on the "just missed him" problem. Sans could be as productive as he feels like, and may even overwork himself, but he's only ever caught by Papyrus when he's trying to catch some sleep to avoid completely conking out, or when he's trying to hide something he should report (like Frisk) and the only excuse he can think of is that he was just goofing off when he was really looking at the human that just walked out of the Ruins (and probably check up on Toriel as best as he can). Thus, whenever Papyrus sees him, he's either doing something which isn't work, or trying to sleep off his sleep deprivation, i.e. not working. Because no one is there to correct Papy, Sans gets branded a lazybones in his mind. As for why Sans seems to be awake every time Frisk shows up (barring the Waterfall-Hotlands checkpoint, that could just be him choosing not to be awake so he doesn't have to chase after the actually good guy human.), but rarely when Papyrus shows up? Maybe Paps just has a light enough step that Sans can't hear him coming. Compared to Frisk who probably powerwalks everywhere due to sheer Determination.

Sans isn't exactly an open book, Papyrus even mentions that he doesn't tell anyone anything. He avoids certain topics and plays everything off as a joke.
Papyrus is self-absorbed and needy, he's too wrapped up in his own schtick to pick apart his brother's issues and realize something's off. He rarely sees Sans actually working and he takes it at face value, and Sans doesn't correct him.

You're not going to believe me, but I fucked him. See, what you don't know about Asriel is e's actually two different actors, one who plays the child and another who portrays the god of hyperdeath in the ending sequence. Anyhow, the older one is actually a musician. I caught his show one night, it wasn't anything incredible or interesting and the crowd was maybe 100 people tops. Even so, he seemed cool, he engaged the audience, etc. Afterwards, my friends and I were at a nearby bar and sure enough him and his band show up. We're the only ones who recognize him and before you know it our two groups are chatting and exchanging stories. He's really down to earth, he laughed about his little cameo in Undertale and how ridiculous he felt in that costume. About five or six drinks later I realize only him and I are still at the bar, our respective friends pulling irish exists one by one. He seems to notice how drunk I am and asks if I wanna crash at his hotel. I'm pretty stoked about spending the night away from my parents house so I say sure. Needless to say, by the time we got in the room we were already making out. He was shockingly good with his mouth. The next day we were both pretty hungover and he left me his number on the back of a hotel napkin. I've been really reluctant to call, feel like I'll only get let down when he sleeps with someone else.

It's my understanding that a single soul is enough to make a monster pretty powerful and at that point if they can maintain control long enough to get 6 more they become unstoppable if they aren't effected by the power of friendship.
Like if Undyne got them during the ending where she is queen she could kill everyone and I don't think anyone could stop her.

If anything I look at the ending of Undertale and think it's one of the most bittersweet ones out there. Asriel lives with his guilt till he either dies or whatever. Asgore and Toriel don't get back together. Alphys somehow gets forgiven for everything and I guess Frisk has a place to live now but...I dunno, it doesn't feel happy. Toby does self-plagiarize, sort of. But it's not dishonest - he doesn't lie about having used it before. Maybe it would count as academic dishonesty, but this isn't academia. I don't think this is bad per se as long as it's transparent.
On the other hand, using original music is good, if only because it lets you use appropriate music. I trust Toby Fox to only reuse music when it's appropriate. He went as far as creating the music for some scenes before properly writing the scenes themselves. But I really doubt a lot of thought went into Minecraft's choice of music.
My thoughts about reusing works are heavily influenced by how it applies to software, though, and that's a completely different situation.

If that's the case then it designates the movie as absolute trash. The moral of the story is to bottle up your emotions and blindly hope that they don't get the better of you. If it's actually about trying to contain psychopathic murderous desires towards one's son then it absolutely bastardizes the struggle. Why was the kid insane in the first place if the Babadook was entirely the mother's issue? He was so disturbed that he was making weapons and thinking up ways to kill the Babadook long before her mother actually turned violent. There's also the fact that she totally murdered the family dog and overcoming her bitterness isn't going to bring it back to life. Come to think of it, the whole movie makes no sense in this context. Was she just hallucinating her son in the final confrontation with the Babadook? He was right behind her, even telling her not to go up to it when it was on the ground. Was that just not real? I guess most of the things that happened in the movie weren't real. What a waste of time.

Flowey initially spent a lot of time with Asgore, and must have learned about the children he killed, but only ended up leaving because he couldn't manage to feel compassion. On the other hand, he pretty explicitly resents Toriel for "replacing" him, and it's implied that's the reason he left her.

Probably not, but that's languages, some things you just can't put through the same way. Most of Undertale's puns couldn't be adapted into my language either, that's just the unfortunately consequence of translations.
With that said, Toby apparently worked very closely with the studio according to him, so pretty much every pun or joke put into the Japanese version will be very deliberate.

I think that if you're making literally anything that isn't a game you need to make Chara into a well-defined character, in which case just calling them Chara is the obvious correct choice. It does count as the "true name", but I never really read anything about the metaish aspect of it.
I feel like there's at least a little implication of Chara representing the player somehow. It rarely gets transferred to other mediums, and that's fine because it just doesn't transfer well, but even in discussions that are purely about the game itself it gets ignored. Chara is made into a more or less ordinary character with no connection to the player, other than the occasional Charrator stuff, but it feels like there's more to it.
But really, the main point of that post was that my impression of Chara when going into the game blind was very different from my impression after getting exposed to fandom stuff, much more so than for other characters.

I think that's dubious, mostly due to the Genocide route's ending. The red text narration would perhaps suggest a deeper connection but the end shoots it down, because Chara addresses either the player (or Frisk, depending on how you read the game) as a definitely separate entity. Yes, there's the whole "ATK, DEF feeling, that was me" but it's doubtful whether that's a figure of speech or anything deeper. If the ending was completely self-narration by Chara, this would be more plausible, but aside from that it's likely more piggy-backing like they're latched to Frisk.
There's also the fact that they're asking for the soul afterwards. If Chara is supposed to be related, it's more likely to be an allegory, rather than an actual connection.

I feel like that's Chara separating themself from you, similar to how Frisk separates themself from you during late-game True Pacifist. They're not supposed tot literally be you, but I think there's a connection. Named protagonists in other RPGs also typically represent the player without literally being the player.
Doing the protagonist-style naming thing for Chara is really weird when there's no connection to the player, and it's something you do in any route. It probably means something, but I suspect the intended meaning is really vague because of Toby being a hack.

I can't really tell if Toby wanted to be clever and preserve the identity switcheroo and thereby making it confusing, or he's just not that good of a writer and tried to be too clever. Or both, both seems like a good choice. Much of it depends on how serious you are about the Chara/Player/Frisk separation, too. I get the meta, but I tend to dislike the player addition due to making the story too artificial. That's just a personal preference though.
The reason I think it rarely translates into other media is exactly this, comics, fics, music and general artworks aren't exactly the best vehicles for the interactive portion a game can offer. With that said, I actually have a doujin in which "the player" is basically the antagonist, for constantly making Frisk re-do the game for their amusement, and it ends with Frisk cutting their strings and Chara implicitly slaying "the player" for getting too annoying and intrusive

The one fic I read with a clear Chara/Frisk/Player separation did it really poorly. If I ever write a story with a player-like role I'm probably just going to use Chara for it. That fits reasonably well with Flowey's post-pacifist plea. If the player controls Chara, and Chara possesses Frisk for most of the game, but Chara stays behind in the underground, it works at least as well as any other explanation I've heard. Might also explain why the true reset happens if Frisk doesn't trigger it.
But all of that is assuming I could make any sort of player role work. It's a mess.

The way I understand Frisk and Chara is that, one side of their dynamic is Frisk = True Pacifist, and Chara = Genocide. Everything about their personalities points towards that. So then, every Neutral route could only happen through some level of mixture of Frisk and Chara's personalities and choices. I consider The Player to mostly be something inbetween Frisk and Chara. Like, the two are together in one body, so like, the point where Frisk's essence meets Chara's essence, is the Player.

I'm not sure what you mean. The way I see it, Frisk and Chara's consciousness are separate mostly, but their subconscious or unconscious or whatever is linked to the point that it might as well be the same thing, and control is mostly split between them, even if Chara only actively takes direct control in Genocide. I get the impression Asriel bringing up the split control thing was supposed to reflect Frisk and Chara's situation.

Chara has about as much characterization as Aaron. I'll show you.
He winks a lot.
He uses words like "spunky" and "feisty" and speaks with double exclamation points and question marks.
He doesn't like Napstablook's and Shyren's music.
He strongly values his muscles.
He has a large ego.
He's into flexing contests.
He's aware that he's creepy.
There you go - Chara is about as well-developed as Aaron. But Chara is one of the fandom's favorite characters, somehow. There's an asymmetry there.

There's still that glimmer that I can hold on to.Sadly that same glimmer is what gets me spooked whenever anything official is announced.I'm not sure if I want to run the risk of Toby making a "canon" Chara.

Impatience is a trait that is shown in the Genocide route, where the behavior of the human is pretty much Chara, even if Frisk is technically the one actually killing things. Chara displays imaptience with Sans' jokes and Papyrus' puzzles, and stuff, whereas Frisk in other routes always plays along. They wanted to destroy humanity, because they were the one that wanted to use Asriel's full power to wipe them out, while Asriel resisted. If you count them as Narrator, along with all of Genocide, they have plenty of characterization. Chara would hate humanity because of the barrier. For creating this small hell he can't escape (imagine if the first time he reset it was after a long life?).

What do you find interesting about them?
I'm not trying to shitpost or bash caretaker, just Chara lost a lot of steam for me when we learned more about their relationship with the other characters, how the underground as a whole sees them, and how they handled Frisk outside of the ruins.
That's not to say any of that was bad it was just really not my cup of tea, I would love to get back into it, and I'm hoping your perspective can help.Especially since we seem to share the same view on the best way to write Chara.

They aren't a dindu by any stretch. They are callous and cruel. They clearly hate humans and that hatred extends to people who are clearly undeserving. They can do awful things with a smile.
But at the same time, they aren't a cackling, smirking, one-note demon. They care for their adoptive family and monsterkind as a whole. They're doing what they think is right.
I also appreciate the fact that they're cool and competent. They can stab a person through the heart in one clean, quick motion. They are cunning enough to manipulate their family to hate humans while not hating them. They kept their cool and kept thinking on their feet when they discovered that Frisk stole control of the save file from them. I like that in a villain.
