Told Cao Ren not to be an idiot at Fan castle and pointed out how much of a blundering mistake Guan Yu's actions were to himself.

Held a defense at Hefei against Sun Quan in 231+ and without losing ground made a solid defense against Quan's army because he never split his reinforcements and saw through Quan's feint to diverge his forces. In 233 he raided Quan personally killing several hundred of his soldiers on their third invasion causing Sun Quan to retreat. (Quan tried again a fourth time but by then Hefei castle was in place and Man Chong had left this post)

Basically you can attribute the defense of Hefei castle against Wu to him and his men alone. He was intelligent enough to listen to his men, assess the situation and not buckle under the weight of responsibility.

Nothing. I gave up. I dont' know what it is, but the game is having heavy slowdowns to a point it actually runs in slow motion. I tried all sorts of fixes people are talking about, from not using a controller, priority settings in the task manager etc. etc.
I refunded it. Empires, SW4-2 and games that have far higher requirements run perfectly fine. If XL doesnt like my system then there's nothing I can do about it apparently. So fuck it.

I mostly agree. I think the pacing issues was due to the series focusing on the wrong characters and wrong things.

The early episodes spent way too much time on (what I assume are mostly mythical) tales from Yue Fei's early career. The late episodes spent way WAY too much time on the side plots of the secret society characters; there were whole episodes where Yue Fei didn't even appear. When your titular character is not showing up, something has gone terribly wrong.

I did like the bits focusing on the Jin perspective though.

First, no it hasn't. It still tries way too hard to be a history book. SW1 and to an extent 2 were far more Basaralike in terms of following history. Second, how is being more like Basara a bad thing? It's got solid gameplay that just improves with each main installment. Obviously the tone is hit and miss but I'd argue DW and SW are just as silly (see: Naotora, XY Zhu, ballistas and flamethrowers in ancient China, etc.), they just take themselves seriously even during their silliness for some reason.

That's just a little video game cutscene power, but if you want to be autistic and demand proper explanation, you could chalk up the fight at Chang Ban was a bit to Zhang Liao advantage, since Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei has been fighting and running away nonstop since the beginning and the only one who's arguably at full strength then was Guan Yu. As for the fight with Sun Quan, like the other anon said, he's probably was getting old, and as Zhang Liao put it, "I thought this was man to man". he was caught by surprise at the way Sun Quan fights.

How is SW3/4 like Basara at all other than being based on the same era?

SW1's gameplay was built on DW4, but that's it. I'm not sure what else was 'more like DW' than the sequels. In fact, SW1 was also different from the rest of the series since it was just an offshoot experiment.
