First time caller here, thought I'd bring my 2D Pixelshit Gamemaker Babby shit to the table. I've actually posted some music on a /v/ thread, but this is the first time posting it here. Its a bit of a love letter to Bubble Bobble, but with its own mechanics that aren't about popping bubbles.

The symbols on the border light up when you hit an enemy with a fireball, according to which symbol pops out of your fireball, which is based on, essentially, 30 sided die roll (As there's 30 symbols). You can get items that take out symbols you've already gotten, and there's a bonus if you get all of them, but if you game over you lose all the ones you've collected, but can start from the level you died at. The drops for items that take out symbols you've already hit increase in the later levels to balance out the later levels being harder (And there's actually a lore reason to, if that fancies you). Since there's also a low chance that you won't hit all the symbols even with item upgrades, if you go long enough without game overing, the item drops will start including unclaimed symbols themselves, so there's a ceiling to how much bad luck can prevent you from unlocking the secret.

This screenshot is only of a test level which is not going into the final product, the point font will certainly change, and I intend to do something about the background (Any good links to tutorials for background art would be nice).

I have a blog for this if you want to follow, but I intend to post here with progress too so don't worry about it. Also if you hate it don't worry about it.

>ASCII game
You should consider not doing that, in the year 2017. Basic tiles are worlds better than ASCII, and don't take that much skill.

To answer your question though, any language will do. Something high level like Java or C# will be more fast enough, and will help with faster dev times.

That said shitty old languages have more fleshed out console based libraries for vidya and whatnot... so you might consider that too.

What is this game about?
>>
>>181582884
It's diep.io in hyperbolic space.
>>
>>181582223

Uh, let's see, I'm diving into things that aren't finished except for lore shenanigans.

>The reason there's plant-like enemies in a cave setting is because the big bad uses plant matter to bind the monsters here in THE REAL WORLD. As you get into deeper levels the background will start including roots and vines and shit and plus I like the all around theme of a tree growing unnaturally through rocks. Almost every enemy has that plant theme, except two potential ones (And one of those is actually just regular ass birds who were "called" towards the center of the cave). Again, this lore stuff is more sub-surface, you'll be able to just play the game completely without knowing anything.

>Those eyeball monsters shoot shit at you, and their eyes follow you when you get close. I had a gameplay video but I'm working on an old ass Acer and it couldn't handle OBS and Gamemaker going at the same time without cutting the framerate in half, which upset the crap outta me because it runs at a sweet 60 FPS.

>I have not yet programmed it in, but you should be able to map your own keys in the final product, because I've already tied keys to variables so it shouldn't be too much of an issue for me to get right. This is something that a lot of indie devs don't think about and that bugs me.
>>
>>181582789
Please consider instead of a noisy texture, using a background with more high-level structure. If you want to be realistic, something like rocks and trees would work. Or just abstract shapes. Landmarks will help people navigate, I think diep sort of does this with the collectibles that spawn in RECOGNIZABLE, NON-UNIFORM patterns.
>>
>>181583025
Good man, keep it up and I want to see some gameplay footage if you can manage it in the near future.

I plan to add scenery. Getting a good background texture is hard because hyperbolic space doesn't tile the same way as euclidean space, so anything I use I have to generate it myself. Before I was considering dividing it into areas like this, but there's no way to avoid having narrow sections if I want them to be bordered by straight lines, and to do it another way would be complicated.

I like them
the only problem I see is if the player stops playing for a minute to leave assuming they're safe and they appear
but as long as you can pause I don't see a problem
>>
>>181586178
Well, you're violating a rule that you've set for the player. So the question is, do you also violate other conventions? Then you'd be setting up a meta rule that standard videogame rules don't apply, and players should expect more where that came from.

It also depends on how often you do it. Is it a one time thing, or is it a crossing of a threshold, after which no room is safe? Do you spring it on the player when they're unaware, or is it done as part of a dramatic moment in the game?

If it's a rule introduced from the beginning that no space is safe, fine, but then you're not really violating anything, you're just saying that if you want to be safe you turn off the game.

How autistic do you have to be to think this way?

The message of 'Just do it' is that you'll never achieve anything good or bad if you just dream about it and never do it. Regardless of whether it turns out bad, mediocre or good, its better to try than not and you shouldn't regret doing it after its done.
The Mr Rogers thing is about how its fine to something that you're not skilled or talented at, as long as you find it an enjoyable pursuit or hobby.

Both are pretty relevant messages for a hobbyist general where producing something of genuine merit for the artform requires significant dedication and a renaissance man skillset.

What's the graphics style of your game?
If it's pixel art it better load in 5 seconds or less.
If it's HD 2D 10 seconds is acceptable.
If it's low poly 3D it better not exceed 20 seconds.
If it's highly detailed 3D 30 seconds is preferred, but up to 1 minute is acceptable.

If it takes longer than those times I'll quickly start to get annoyed. Although if the game is really good I'll be more likely to ignore the load times, add 50% extra time if I think the game is really good.

I used LiceCap to do a gif instead of a webm, which makes sense I didn't really need a webm anyway.

I manually made the enemy at the end, enemies don't just burst out of nowhere in real gameplay. The little blue square is actually the item object that takes away a symbol you've already earned. Also kinda ridiculous that two shots got the same symbol in a row, but that's good cause I wanted to show off that you can steal your partner's symbols anyway. You get a point multiplier based on how many symbols are in your color (Single player runs will probably get you more points, obvs). Points gives you lives, which prevents the game over losing your symbols, which I thought was a great way to create stakes; you'll always be able to start at the level you game over in, but you still lose something that's "important".
>>
>>181594159
So a single shot is enough to kill the enemies? Usually those single screen arcade games had the player's attack stun the enemy and set them up in a way where they had to risk themselves to finish them.

>>
>>181594280

Well, the symbol gimmick is an important part of the game's structure, and I can't allow players to farm shots off enemies, so I've mostly focused enemy creation on how they can kill you first. I do have an enemy planned that has an attack on death, but other than that I didn't have anything special planned.

I'm open to suggestions, though, I am not lazypants, I don't mind programming different enemy types. As long as they do not detract from game plan A: I cannot allow players to farm infinite shots by just stunning enemies and refusing to kill them.

If you're going to have a good loading time, do it right:
- Add some nice screenshot/art and alternate
- make the loading bar interesting (Ever played Requiem Bloodymare with its stitches-ripping loading bar?)
- Add some text, like 2-3 liens to read while waiting, make a bunch of them and alternate
and so on

Just be sure to provide something 'ok' to your players while they wait.

I just want to point out that there are three Rs
>>
>>181595420

I wary of moving that far away from the original design+lore.

Original design had the symbols in the fireball, flicking between all of them at a high speed. Turns out, you couldn't really see them, so it wasn't worth the constant draw function. The story, and if I were to ever do concept art, still has the symbols within the fireball and I'm extremely partial to that.

Its a legitimate question to ask if I should move away from that, but I think I should explore the concept of enemies that fit my design before I give up and move on.

Potential solution tho: Monster gets hit by fireball, symbol pops from fireball and onto its space on the border, monster crumples to the floor. You have to finish it off through some other method (As simple as touching it perhaps), and if you take too long, the monster gets back up and I find some way of creating a good visual where the symbol on the border is "stolen" by the monster (I'm thinking have it fade a bit, and then fly it towards the monster where it disappears). I think I could definitely do that, if that sounds better, but I don't know if I should make every monster like that. Leaf-Head there might remain a one-shot monster to show it being the weakest, and the monster I mentioned that has a kill-switch attack has a design I'm in love with and won't touch for nothing. Every other potential monster is fair game for such a change though.

Ah, I see. Heres a quick idea to keep the lore intact and still have enemies that require an extra attack after the fireball: have a monster that gets hit by the fireball and gets a symbol seared onto his body where the player can see it. After a while he could stand up and shake off the symbol and maybe a smoke/ash effect. The player would still only get the symbol after a follow up attack, but while the monsters on the ground with the symbol seared onto it the player can look at it and think "hey I need that one!" or "fuck that, already got it" or tell a friend to pick it up in multiplayer. Just something for your consideration

The best thing about this is that I didn't change it and it's been like this for few months now and noone noticed
>>
>>181597209

I could have it where it collectable off the body off the monster in some way, that's not a bad idea. Actually shaves off some logistics problems from that first solution. Plus it makes for another thing to collect points off of, and that's always nice.

I do need to clarify that if you have a symbol in your color, you don't want your player two to have it because then it just moves onto his color and he gets the point multiplier from having it. Bubble Bobble is a huge influence to me, and one of the reasons why is that while you're in a complete co-op setting, when it comes to points you are out there snaking their shit out from under them.

Id say 3-5 per 3-5min. If im staring at a black screen, I'm gonna get pretty pissed off to see load screens all the time.

If you want me to wait longer, the load screen better have hints, an interactive mini game/cutscene, or interesting and unrepetitive music.

Sure this may not be too realistic all the time, but that's what affects my level of patience.

Re-added most of the lightning attack moveset. Now you can shoot a bit faster than before. Almost done with the player state refactoring.

Also I made a lightning hit effect but I can't seem to get it looking right. Going to have to completely scrap those effects and try again with a different method at some point.

Another thing is its easy to get sucked into giving it all your attention, reading what people say, checking other discords, it feels like an obligation to click around and see what has been said, when 99% of the time it doesn't relate to you

/agdg/ is slow enough that there are natural breaks to go back to working on your game, and its content is 99% shitposting anyway so you don't feel guilted into reading what anon wrote since its almost guaranteed to be low effort trash anyway

It's incredibly hard to do, but the correct strategy for dealing with social sites is to do it all at a set period either at the beginning or end of the day. You spend your time more efficiently since you get all the posts at once instead of checking every few minutes. Google "variable reward schedules" for the science behind it.

better not use 4chan either then, we can easily piece together posting patterns to form (You) into a continuous identity

They probably complain because dithering is sort of obsolete with current technology. Nowadays you can use whatever colours you want instead of mixing colours with dithering.

it should be but then again C&Ds arent actually legal actions, they're threats of legal actions... threats can be bullshit and hosts will still automatically comply.
>>
>>181616231
Yeah, The guys making the HD remake of Mortal Kombat were mostly latinos from diferent countries, and yet they got a Cease & Desist on the project, only allowing them to keep posting their assets as "fanart" but they aren't allowed to make any kind of game with them, even if they do it for free.

Something similar happened with the guy making the Castlevania remake I believe, they allowed him to keep the demo on itch, but don't allow him to keep working on the project anymore.

That's why fan games are never a good idea. No matter how much love you put into them the same people you admire will spit on it, because they only care about money. Make a clone of your favorite game if you want, but never a fan game.
>>
>>181616515
And if they continued with it anyway, which consequences could there be?

Besides asking to sites to don't host it or take it down.
>>
>>181616826
Or keep it a secret and then "leak it" to the public or something when you've got at least the content of the base game done.

>>181616826
I wouldn't agree it's the -same- people but rather their bosses and the legal team those bosses hire. The creative team and the financial team are often two separate bodies, especially in any studio large enough to have fan games.
>>
>>181616880
I don't think anyone has ever reached that point, most people will get discouraged and scared if they know a big rich corporation can fuck them in the ass at court.

>>181617090

>>
>>181617365
Great! Wow that was quick. Can you go into some detail about your game and workflow?
>>
World of horror dev, i enjoyed your game, you did improve a lot of things, it seems that the location where you need to go is set automatically now, combat screen is definitely better, i can see rolls and everything is explained compared to the last demo, but there are some problems :
- first is, did GMS upped the system requirements? i had a crash whenever i start the game until i messed with the configs randomly, it seems that setting "CreateTexturesOnDemand=1" makes it work.
- soundtrack is short and the loop can get annoying really fast, also when you start a new mystery the music stopped until i got an event that changed the music.
- pressing H doesn't do anything so i guess that's not implemented yet?
- no save system? or you won't have it at all?
- if you show the rolls in combats you need to show it for events too, if you want the classic feel there's no need to hide dice rolls at all.
- the additional action screen isn't good, it's too crowded, it doesn't make sense to have the shop, resting (only works when you're home) and hospital at the same time, find a better way to present those while staying on the same screen, the same way you can choose actions in battle, make it so you can choose actions when you're at a certain place (your room, hospital...).
- there's a glitch (?) when you show different cards, you need to hide the current card if you want to see another one, clicking a different card should switch to it completely.
- choosing a mystery screen while the presentation is good, the content is bad, i had 4 of the same mysteries, it's better to generate a mystery only once, also i thought that screen would change when i finish a mystery, it seems that you need to solve 5 mysteries before getting to the final boss (?) and after i finish one it would be marked as so, but the screen is the same without any changing, making all that arrangements useless.
- finding funds is really rare, and so is reducing doom meter, is that intended?
>>
>>181617330

anyway, you made great effort and it shows, you're going the right way, the gun is op and i love it, there's a lot of events, the variety is good, your art is good, the little details are good, and you took me by surprise when i left the game for a while then found a jumpscare on the main screen, well played, i never thought you'd do that

Not him but I'm working on a tactics-style game in gamemaker, going is slow though. I have started one or two other projects but mostly a beginner. It depends on what you want to do.

If you want to go for 2D that doesn't need any tiling then Unity is perfect. You just have to slap a perfect camera script and you're done.
But if you want to use tiles, which is probably more than 80% of what 2D games use, then you're fucked because you have to write your own solution to fix putting pixels on a mesh problem.

Probably the lower resolution or framerate, maybe that most of videos show frantic gameplay too. Long time lurker, 1st time poster here.

We are two man working on this game, Exploder. we already have experience making games for other people(mostly in Japan). Now we decided to create something on our own. But we have day jobs so we only get to work on this game during weekends and sometimes weeknights if we are free.

We are ripping off Silent Bomber's mechanics(that ps1 game). Not sure what to say really.

Does something like this exists, I need it for some inspiration (could be games, movies, books...)

So you follow people, see where they are going, who they talk to, where is their place of work, at what time do they leave the house and come back etc. And you use that info to create a whole formula (you could be a thief, or a killer or something like that)

Fishing for recommendations of games that either feature lots of conventional dungeon crawling, are slow paced side-scrolling adventure/platforming games, really-really good side-scrolling adventure/platforming games, or less conventional games that still technically qualify as "crawling," a "dungeon." Top-dollar fantasy RPGs may also apply.
-for research purposes.
The list (have/am going to play) currently includes:
Bauldur's Gate
Claustrophobia
Dark Souls
Darkest Dungeon
Delver**
The Elder Scrolls
EvilMaze
Hollow Knight
Legend of Grimrock
Magicite
Momodora
Rogue Legacy
Salt and Sanctuary
Shovel Knight
Sword of the Stars: The Pit
Volgarr the Viking

Zelda II was my favorite too.
There was a Zelda AGDG 30 day game jam a while back that I competed in.

I used wrestling characters like Hulk Hogan, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Andre the Giant, Hollywood Hogan, and Macho Man Randy savage in a Zelda II setting.

I even used the same style of 3 powers to choose from leveling.
HEART

SUNGLASSES
Adds to your maximum Mania (Magic)
GLOVE

You have to install the font Apple Kid otherwise it looks like shit.

If you're interested you can download it here.

And you're sure it happened over the net and not on local right? Like, if your router automatically transport back to the local network if it detects it instead of sending the packet on the net.

I would assume that it should work though, if it works on local it means that the packets are at least transiting so it should also work online as long as there isn't anything blocking.

But since I can't try myself I just want to get some confirmation from people who can.

Unity's limitations to CCU only matter if you use their multiplayer services like the matchmaker/server lobby thing. It's 100% free as long as you don't use their services.

If you do direct connection or host your own lobby server then you don't have to a give a shit about that.

I remember this game, you used some weirdass flash wrapper or something that made my antivirus freak out.
What's up with that?

i used the ip address, thats enough to check the difference in RRPS (flash). idk about how youre doing it.

>I would assume that it should work though, if it works on local it means that the packets are at least transiting so it should also work online as long as there isn't anything blocking.
there shouldnt be anything blocking though, if you cant connect theres a problem.

Depends, are there any free solutions out there? Haven't looked into that.

Also wouldn't that just be using a relay at this point? Sure it works if you use a server relay but that's not the point, I'm just trying to get basic p2p because most users don't have their own server obviously.
>>
>>181629675
I extremely doubt that. You'd have to be a serial killer or actual pedo. It takes time and dedication to build up the base of hatred Gooogoo has

btw i switched to [both] that time so i guess it needs to do both types of connections probably?
would recc getting rid of the ip input for when you click host, confused me for a sec... and you should output the ip so the hoster doesnt have to go check for it externally

Yeah at the time I didn't know you could just export EXE from Flash itself. I'm new to all of this.

When exporting? Can I do that on Flash 8?

There is so much I still don't know yet lol.

that literally applies to the whole world
there are people that no matter how much you'll suck their dick, they won't give a fuck about you

>>181630468
>getting rid of the ip input for when you click host
Yeah, but the whole confusion I have to being with is because of Unity. I just learned over the year to never trust what it does, so I enforce the ip used by the user to make sure that it does everything correctly.

I will have to test to see if Unity can get the proper ip by itself before hosting, but frankly I don't expect anything from it. Thanks for the feedback anyway.
>>
>>181628468
it is gonna be like those modern action shooter Resident evils (4,5 and 6) and you know the timed modes in them? i'm taking the middle ground between those and the storymode. so running trough levels with limited time while solving some puzzles and finding keys and cards to unlock doors.

its in the properties panel.
maaan if i remember right back before flash8 you could just embed once and it would take care of every textbox that used the font, in flash8 you gotta make sure the embed settings are done on each box.

Yes, but being busy is not being productive.
You could can start a new different project everytime just to learn one thing or two, or you could carry on one to the finish.
The difference is the development stage you find yourself in at the moment of switching or finishing.
If you renounce always in the same point, you are fucking up a lot. If you renounce a little bit futher in comparison to the past point, you are fucking up a little bit less but you are still going through the same steps.
The progress that you consider done, is just reforming and patching up holes in the first stages of your dev experience.

Nothing wrong with dithering as long as your game calls for it. This usually means deliberately having a small overall palette for your game. Otherwise you can do it in a stylistic way, but this would probably tie into having a small palette too.

Otherwise, just know that as others mentioned, dithering was a technique used out of necessity to make up for not having a big palette, and I think it looked better on the old tvs anyway. All that said, in the end you can do whatever you want as long as you think it looks good. Good luck on your game if you ever get to it.

So the first project you worked on, was 100% finished and a masterpiece? You're implying that the failures, or learning trials and experiences along the way to a finished product are not anything.

I've finished games, but I've also done some games I've canceled because I didn't like them. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth it.

Game: Unknown World

Dev: Dewdneym

Tools: RPG Maker VX Ace, Paint.net
Web: https://dewdneym.itch.io/unknownworld, http://dewdneym.tumblr.com

Progress:
+ made town tiles on the overworld match their actual layout
+ started a new tileset for a desert town
+ fixed a bunch of bugs, need to update demo soon
- making the oasis was a pain in the ass. Still might be too small
- need to ask around for more prop ideas

He claims that devs will use you solely for the (You)s on their progress. Do not be fooled. The shitposters will only care about you as long as you are working with them to sabotage the creation of games. Becoming a nodev like them is an endless downward spiral.

But the shitposters are an important counterweight that keeps this general from turning into a circlejerk. There's just a lot of collateral damage.
