Reposting in the new thread for my fellow nodevs.

I can't even finish making a game of tic-tac-toe. No ability to plan properly, or execute on a plan.

Why can't you finish a game?
>>
Giving small feedback on the demos I have played so far:

>Kick-in
I love Punch Out! so this is really nice for me and hitting furries is always a plus. I feel the uppercut and dodge animations are kind of slow compared to Little Mac's maybe you did it intentionally in favor of the special meter, because In punch out you could spawn uppercuts like crazy. First enemy is kinda on the strong side in my opinion, his hits make a lot of damage compared to what Glass Joe did.

>Unnamed Platformer
Should be called "Picnic in Australia" Lovely work on the new graphics, and the new additions. I lost my shit when a snake walked over a jump pad and flew over my head. Great way to show how they work too. Is the item drop random? I usually get the the cake piece just after respawming and in full health instead of when I'm begging to get one.
Getting the cake with full health should add a temporary extra heart anyway. You kinda deserve it. Good job as always.
>>
>>181407675
Wo shit no way, have you written any program more than 200 lines?
>>
>>181407782
Oh yeah. Just lines of code doesn't mean jack shit.

I've started a game extended across 8-10 classes, interfaces. I've done swarming AI that coordinated to surround or flank the player.

Nodevs don't have to be bad at coding, and I bet some are pretty good.

Nodevs just don't finish games.

>Spaceship Crew Self-Defence Simulator
I'm currently playing on a shitty laptop because my main rig's hdd, died and I'm having performance issues there. Game seems to run fine, but the controls feel laggy and I can't see my own bullets, so I can't give proper feedback. But I can notice how much work you have put on it since the last demo, and that's amazing. Keep it up!

>Wasteland Rampage
I love seeing how new stuff gets added. Only complain I have is that the inventory screen doesn't look too intuitive, but I guess it's an early WIP since you have improved menu screens a lot over time.

>Catgirl pool party
You had fixed all the bugs I found last time, I think catgirl is moving too fast, unless you have inteded it that way maybe a max speed limiter could work for her? I love how you are following Contra's control scheme for aiming, can't go wrong with that. Do plan to have long levels, or will this have a boss rush approach like Hard Corps? Really curious about that.

>>

thanks! i simply didn't know about aseprite. Does it have any cool features?
Any program with the capability of using layers and composite effects should be enough though, composition and polish is what really matters
>>
>>181409594
Naw, it only runs during editor.
I was thinking of making all the features of it public functions, but it'd probably need a week of refactoring.
Plus when i looked, there are actual complete solutions for dungeon generation that already exist, which this tool can't possible compete with. https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/53895
>>
I'm back to grab more ideas from you guys:
Alright idea guys give me elevator pitch for a game. Here are some guidelines:

-K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid)
-3d graphics (gameplay can be 2d I guess)
-Space Theme(not too important)
-Single player
-Has replayability

I was thinking something like kid Icarus Uprising where you're a mecha thing, several levels, fun story. Levels are in 2 parts. A 3d space shooty part and then a 3d area fighting thing with bosses.
>>
>>181409723
>which this tool can't possible compete with
are you sure any of them can work on spheres?
theres a ton of spacedevs who are essentially making the same generated bullshit but on spheres
>>
>>181409853
>Alright idea guys give me elevator pitch for a game.

>>
>>181409875
I mean yea i guess it works well in that case, but the tool isn't a complete solution for that scenario.
And i kind of wanted to avoid adding features that only serve one specific purpose.

For example if you wanted to randomly generate stuff on a surface, you'd need to find random points on the surface, which i don't have implemented in my tool, or a feature that allows you to scatter objects to around a surface, which i also can't do.

I do have feature requests on my asset store description, so if people are really missing something i'll consider implementing it. (as long as they've paid the 8 buckaroos :^) )

> Ghost Knight Victis

Works great on my rig, no FPS drop and felt smooth.

Rapier felt too slow and it was easier just to spam spear. I'm not sure if there was a cooldown on the ghost dash, but I felt like there wasn't much I could do trying to deal with two enemies.

Combat feels good. It will be interesting to see how you develop it. I like the different weapons, gives the game a different flavour to your standard souls experience.

Stealth just became that much more viable with the noise pinging in conjunction with peeking around corners. Got to balance it out a bit.
Mimics are a pain while sneaking though, got to make some way to identify them from afar, like some subtle animation every now and then.
>>
Here's a tip for you, people like novelty in gameplay even if it's something cosmetic, fight knight succeeded because it's not "yet another shooter", you punch through everything, that's not exactly new, but it's fresh, undertale succeeded because it's not yet another rpg, it added bullet hell elements, don't be afraid of breaking the usual formula.
Also MUSIC sells, it's built in the human brain, humans react to sound faster and better than images, remember that catchy beat you can't take out of your mind? remember when you got goosebumps because of good music? did you ever have the same reaction to images? no? good, now pay attention to sound design, start learning it or spend a bit more to get better soundtracks for your game, you can even sell them with the game too in the golden edition.

>Very dumb AI

Yeah, the AI's a clusterfuck of me trying to be clever.

They intentionally lose you when you run out of their line of sight, but I'm going to be tweaking that with a delay. There's a navmesh that they're supposed to use but it's currently ignored as my traversal code was just a quick hack to make sure it was loading.

I get the stuck guys too, I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is so it shouldn't be happening any more next demo day.

The level design has been a very low priority while I make everything to populate the maps with. My plan is to have about 6-8 maps, each about 2-4 times the size of the current one. Depending on how fast/slow that is to make, I could make more, but I won't release with less.

The cake drops are completely deterministic, you kill an enemy and the counter increases, when it goes over a certain threshold it drops a cake and resets. It was RNG based in older demos but it never felt right, so I changed the system.

Arrowpit :

The 3 characters concept is interesting but the game feels buggy at the moment. The shield character was moving without me pressing any keys and the game crashed in less than 30 seconds. Iron out your bugs. Also the control scheme feels kinda cramped. Is there supposed to be 3 people on the same keyboard or you control all 3 characters by yourself?

The most glaring issue is the green bar at the bottom.

The music is nice but maybe a bit too repetitive? I feel like it should evolve into something more elaborate. I'm not a music guy though.

The camera shots "tell" the same thing again and again, it's not interesting enough. You should move on in the trailer.

Also I'm not really fond of the text on the bottom left. It feel too straight out of photoshop. Add some subtle distortion effects, maybe make it a bit glowing. Take a look at the computer screens in Fallout 3, they did that pretty well.

With some polishing, it should be good though. Take everything I said with a grain of salt because I don't know anything and I've never made a trailer.

> How much of this is Eastern style? When I saw the part where the left leg is raised before thrusting, it kind of looked like Chinese martial arts.

Eastern or western style is a misnomer, there are only two kinds of martial arts, those that work and those that don't. Raising the leg is part of a counter-thrust or cut. That being said, I have not seen those kinds of techniques in western martial arts manuals, though they are prominent in Indian, Chinese and Japanese martial arts.

Most of my training is in Eastern Martial arts, but aside from small points (which I personally think are lost in time/translation), eastern and western martial arts are pretty much the same.

Key Press initiates movement.

So if each of your grid tiles is 32x32 pixels, pressing Up would initiate movement to move 32 pixels up, you can use LERP for nice fluid movement.

During the movement, you don't take any input from the player, so he can't move until it finishes.

Once the 32 pixels are traversed, you check for key input again and do it all over again.

Could just have a singleton set-up, where you just have a static singleton "int time", so if the player or something else advances the time, you could set it up so that all entities that rely on time will update.
You could do this either just by having "int time" in each of those scripts, and then if "time != static singleton time, then <do action>"
or you could do use other methods, like events (subscribing methods to the static singleton OnTimeChange) for example.

Been working on a level hub. The idea is each world gets a floor, and the farther you get in the game the higher you go. The planet is world cake and your going up on its layers.

Boku's house/village is at the top, while the storm is what sent boku flying and crashing at the bottom layer since he fell asleep outside on accident.

stop being antagonistic. And I'm not an idea guy, I'm a programmer. But After I start, I struggle to continue. I've worked in big teams, and I really enjoyed having it all thought out for me. Having a design I can follow, and having all my tasks (at least an overview) in a place where I can see them.

So I need to focus more on being an idea guy, and design the game, make a GOOD GDD, and start separating all the tasks I need for the game.

Someone starting with story is a big red flag that they're a green hand that has no clue what they're doing in gamedev.

It's too easy to get into a trap of wanking over your deepest lore and never pull things in to actually making a goddamn game.
>>
>>181417178
Unless you're making a VN or a mobile phone game, the only real way to do it is to start with both a basic gameplay concept and a basic story concept or setting then modify them as needed through development.
I'd be very hard to make even a metroidvania clone without at least having a basic concept of your character and setting before you start fleshing out character abilities and game mechanics.

Is it just me or when a game starts forcing story on you does your brain just start to reject it and you feel drowsy just looking at that shit?

I love reading books/VNs, but whenever games hit me with that crap I just shut down.

I have the feeling it's common, but, maybe I just have a weird mental hangup.

Pic unrelated (and fake, okay)

Depends on the game and how good the story is.

Its probably because a lot of games handle story really poorly, have terrible dialogue and exposition prose and are also very unoriginal.
If the average video game writer tried to write a book or tv episode they would get laughed out of the room.

It's true, but I know plenty of gamers who play games because of the story. Also, some of the popular indie games of this year:
>What remains of edith finch
>Little nightmares
>Kona
>Rime
All focused on story, their gameplay was nothing special at all. Indie games aside, I don't need to name AAA games, but all those award-winning ones from the last year focused on stories, from Witcher to Uncharted etc.

I'm not sure what gamers want nowadays t b h, but from what I see, it's visuals and story first, gameplay second (unless you're some underground, hardcore "le wrong generation" gamer). Not saying story is more important, I'd rather have both original gameplay and story, but...

In RPGs you can talk with villiagers and whatnot, right? Shouldn't near on 100% of them be some sort of interesting?

You can't do a game where gameplay and storytelling mix without setting up the story first.
How the fuck do you know a game mechanic fits into the story if you don't have a story...
I agree you don't need to craft a 500-pages essay into the story of elf rape but you need the key points of the story at least.

Well imo what makes survival games fun is risk and reward aswell as making the player plan ahead and think about what they're doing. In Stalker, there's always the chance you're going to get fucked up by random shit like weather, mutants, anomalies you weren't paying attention to etc. Your chances of survival not only depend on your skill but your loadout aswell. You want to make sure you're prepared for any situation. Same goes for a game like Rimworld where the storyteller AI constantly throws events at you and if you didn't prepare for, say, a bug invasion in your kitchen then that might well be the end of your colony. It's tense, because you never know what's going to happen, and it rewards you for thinking strategically instead of winging it.

I'm brainstorming about jungle exploration setting and all the possible mechanics like
>you have to constantly monitor the weather, if the sky is changing, you need to sprint and search for some safe space before the huge storm, the risk here is also that you could find a cave with some predator in it
>if the forest gets quiet, something is probably lurking nearby, so you have to prepare for the attack
>you find traces of someone who has been here before you, you find empty tribal villages, interiors completely ruined, possibly another exploration group you didn't hear of

There's nothing wrong with these mechanics. But a lot of survival games take place in jungles, forests, islands and similar. Fighting against tribals and wild animals. You don't need to have 100% original mechanics as long as you implement the ones you've got there well, but I think giving you survival game a more unique "skin" or setting would really help.

valve and other games that use Steam's marketplace devalue their ingame currencies by having them trade with real world currency.
-explanation-
-there are keys and boxes in TF2
-the boxes are generally found (taking time) and the keys are bought from valve
-in standard trading; people who didnt want to spend money would trade away boxes for keys whereas people who didnt want to waste time would buy keys to trade for boxes... so essentially keys=money, boxes=time
-transitioning to a market system all of these items can now be bought and sold for national currency
-as a result of this change, keys no longer = money, trying to sell a key will never result in more money/value than it cost to buy
that's how the key market died, the box market oversaturated and the entire traditional in game currency was devalued.
it seemed to the consumer like a new better way to trade (and make money!!) but in reality was a way to force people into buying things in the store and to make a cut from everyone too stubborn to give up on trading.

What do you think? I haven't heard about anything similar. Yeah, you can pick up weapons in games like Unreal or have killstreaks like in COD, but this is a bit different, and I guess a mix of two, since the items you build will be some powerful shit that gives you an edge like a killstreak.

I'm just saying that where I live, to be a professional (classical) musician, you need to go through 15 years of education system minimum. I'm saying classical, because ofc you don't need to finish even primary music school if you want to play in a rock band with your mates. That being said, I do think that after 11 years of me going through a piano performance education, there are not many new technical things for me to learn, but there's still a lot to learn to become a better artist. That's why people spend another 5+ years in school.

>>181434770
That's fine, yeah. Just saying, I'm talking in general, because that guy linked FZD website and then talked how you can get to a professional level in a few years. Not everywhere and in every field. Actually, when I think of other universities in my country, too, eh, you're not really coming out of them as a professional at all. And it's not like they are bad unis at all.

Got a bit more particles. I love that the particles scale to the emitter because the blue gun fires larger, stronger shots if you wait between shots and the particles scale with it.
Also improved the grenade explosion.

The grenade arch forces you to use the aim offset if you want to hit enemies at range while locked on which I like.

Whimp the Bold DD15 build is ready, with 3 levels, 6-7 enemies to possess, and a miniboss to fight!

Tons of sprites have been updated, and environment is most of the way through an overhaul, and most of the enemies now have altered controls or moves that feel better.

This demo supports gamepad and keyboard, but the moveslist on the pause screen only lists controller. I'll doa UI/UX update next time, but for now know that A is jump, X is attack, and RT is possess

Looking forward to feedback/bugs/crash reports

it's just like "depth". people complain that a movie wasn't "deep enough" but that's a meaningless statement. what's going on is that the're unsatisfied with the movie for some concrete reason but they're not insightful enough to articulate it, so they complain in a non-specific way. it wasn't "interesting", it wasn't "deep enough", i didn't like the "underlying idea". this fixation on hidden layers that lay beneath the work itself is a sign of a deeply confused mind. there's nothing "underneath" the work itself.

It's just that quirky humor that sounds like it came from some kids show or something. As the other guy said, Undertale has it, but I've seen it in other games too, it seems that Fight Knight also has some of it from what I've seen.

why not have some sort of word balloon next to the character instead of a dialogue box that repeats the same sprite?

well anon all the games you're talking about are quirky games that have appeal for children

Why people don't really like topdown games, even if it is 3D and a bit angled? I'm not sure what style to choose, but I also think that third person could be harder to make because the textures will have to be even more detailed.

Individually, these work i.e. if you put a Debug.Log in the if statements by themselves, it prints it, but together they don't work. Why not?

i love the little details in this game, i thought dashing to the wall to gain floating again wasn't intended then i got the the level that used it, you have to inform the player about that, level design still need working, a lot, not sure if giving every enemy a double jump/floating is a good choice, they should be more diverse in term of the control, the attack of the swinging enemy is weird and not fitting, the effect of the attack makes the game lag and crash sometimes, i love that death animation, it's obvious that you're still trying different kind of things, can't wait for more.

Also, I don't have time to feedback a lot but I suggest that anon to make a level that forces you to use ALL attacks to proceed. Maybe there can be a sign that tells you how to use the attacks, and for special attacks, there could be a new "recharge station" kind of feature, like a special fruit or something.
>>
>>181441980
if the noogie's attack is him throwing his glasses then why he can shout two at the same time? i like how if you jump out of the way when it comes back you basically get an infinite range.
