To the Third Dwarf Fortress General Tournament

In this iteration of the grand blood-letting ritual known as the tourney, we do not have a mere sixteen gladiators this time. No, instead thirty-two brave, foolhardy souls have come to risk life and limb in the arena. Thirty-two warriors, thirty-two men, women, monsters and beasts have gathered for the sole purpose of winning gold, glory, triumph and the right to call themselves

But enough of this meaningless prattle, let us step back and allow the real reason you have all gathered here to cheer, scream, cry and laugh at to come forth. Let the warriors prepare themselves, and pray to whatever gods they believe in. For the one supreme being, Armok above, demands blood. And we are but his humble servants, condemned to obey.

For the first of today's fights, we have Oleme the elf versus Trihardin Mclargehuge the human.

Oleme, an elf hailing from the distant jungles of the far south, is similar in clothing and apparel to Efeye, an warrior and assassin many of you might remember well. Perhaps they knew each other, or studied in the same shadowy assassin's school one might hear rumors about in shady pubs. Regardless, this relatively fresh faced elf doesn't seem to have as much of the frightening ruthlessness of Efeye, but flashes his daggers about with a jaunty smile on his lips, confident in his skill.

Many members of the audience, when questioned, have expressed concern over the burly human's chances against a skilled knife-wielding elf. The man chooses to fight unarmed and unarmoured, trusting in his own might and unbreakable willpower, constantly seeking self-improvement and to, in his own words "git gud". Against such determination, one cannot help but respect the man, whatever his chances.

The horn sounds, and springing forward, Trihardin surprises everyone by taking the offensive on his armed opponent, swatting at Oleme and battering him soundly! Surprised, Oleme hurriedly backs away, trying to make space between himself and his intimidating opponent, but is chased all over the arena by Trihardin in hot pursuit, until the big man lands a solid chop to the back of Oleme's leg. Tumbling to the arena floor and unable to stand, the elf desperately slashes the air with his daggers trying to keep his foe back. Stepping this way and that while looking for an opening, Trihardin makes a mistake, and his foot is impaled by the iron dagger! Oleme's triumph is short lived however, as the man roars and savagely kicks the elf in the midsection, and angrily strikes the dagger-wielding hand. The blade clatters the floor, and the elf writhes in pain, clutching his midsection with a broken hand. His second dagger, however is ever-ready, and gritting his teeth, Oleme lands a wild cut, embedding the dagger in Trihardin's hand! Heedless of the danger, the man flies into a rage, and begins mercilessly pummeling his smaller foe with a barrage of blows. Although he is stabbed in the arm, the beating doesn't cease, and eventually the second dagger is violently wrenched away from Oleme. Now, with the fight decidedly one sided, Trihardin redoubles his efforts, using his fists, his feet, and even his teeth until the poor creature is but a quivering mass of tender flesh. Breathing heavily and pausing momentarily, Trihardin roars his triumph to the crowd, before chomping down in a fit of berserk rage on Oleme. Shaking the jungle elf like a dog to screams in the audience, a horrible snapping, popping sound is heard, and the broken fighter falls limp, his spine shattered. Dropping the corpse, his grinning maw stained with blood, Trihardin McLargehuge stands tall to shouts from the crowd, elated in his victory.

Oleme traveled far to fight in this tournament. His purpose remains unclear, but regardless he shall be honoured in death. Perhaps he shall have another chance in the Battle Royale, we shall see. For now his body is interred in the catacombs, awaiting a new chance.

For our next fight we have the oddly named human Light Plump Avenger against the hulking troll known as.. er... Jackson Troll Slayer. Will the human once more triumph over his opponent, or will the strength of trolls prove too much?

On a journey for vengeance and answers, Light Plump Avenger has come to discover the truth about what happened to his village, and why it was left as empty as the wastes of the terrifying badlands. Armed with a very fine steel sword, it is the envy of many a warrior, but does he know how to wield it? We await his fight with bated breath.

Jackson Troll Slayer has come to fight in the hope of troll slaying. Although we've tried to explain he's the only troll competing, he doesn't seem to understand. Regardless, the familiarity with which he handles his axe should prove that this troll is an accomplished warrior, who will be a major threat to any combatant, especially those who lack the fierceness of trolls.

Actually, I did fuck up with the gifs for the fights I've recorded so far. The colour is way too dark, making things unnecessarily hard to see. The fight commences, and it doesn't take too long before Light Plump Avenger scores first blood, landing two shallow cuts on his bigger foe. Grunting in pain, Jackson charges at the human and smashes into him, sending him crashing to the floor. Light Plump Avenger manages to gather his footing and parry the axe just in time, but Jackson, displaying impressive strategy for a troll, baits him into an overly aggressive attack! The swordsman is struck hard, and his leg buckles under the might of a troll's blow. Unable to stand, LPA raises himself up slightly just in time for Jackson's big meaty fist to slam into his face, bursting his lip and causing a spray of blood! With a rapidly swelling face and blinking through the tears, LPA snarls and swings his blade, only for Jackson to send his axe hacking once more into the wounded leg, this time shearing it off completely! With blood spurting out of his stump, the young warrior ripostes and stabs the troll deeply, only for the axe to shear deeply into his chest! Awash in a tide of blood, and heedless of the glancing strikes of the still struggling Light Plump Avenger, Jackson rends the stomach of his foe with his gore-stained axe. Incredibly, LPA continues to fight despite his horrific injuries, actually throwing himself at Jackson and biting him in the head! Ignoring the attack, Jackson uses the opportunity to swing at the dangling leg of the human, and chops it off above the knee! Tearing the crippled human from his head, Jackson hacks off the hand of LPA, even as the brave swordsman, now hemorrhaging and vomiting blood, still weakly fights back. Almost nonchalantly, Jackson parts the flesh of his enemy like wet tissue, and removes the boy's right arm. Finally, mercifully, Light Plump Avenger shudders, the blood pooling from his ruined body slowing down, and he struggles no more. Bathed in crimson, Jackson stoically stares about, heedless of the crowd, ever ready for his next challenge.

Light Plump Avenger, though he fought fiercely and bitterly, still perished with his quest unresolved. Should there be an afterlife for his kind, hopefully there the answers to his questions lie. Or, should he prove mightiest in the battle royale, he may revive his quest, and pick up where he left off.

The next fight shall pit JC Denton versus Dag the Dog Master and his companion, a frightening giant wolf.

A mysterious agent for an unknown power, JC Denton has infiltrated our tournament in the hopes of discovering the "truth" behind the arena. Whatever it is he hopes to find, we wish him the best of luck and merely hope that his discoveries do not lead to his undoing.

A dusty legend from a bygone era, Dag the Dog Master has had a long life, full of adventure and excitement. It is whispered his current, and last adventure, is to discover the secrets of immortality and to cheat death, and it is for that reason he has come to fight. Despite his rusted skills and withered might, this living legend is no idle threat, partly due to the giant wolf he has brought, tamed in one of his many adventures.

Dag grips the neck of his giant wolf, looking grim but determined. JC Denton, on the other end of the arena, looks as calm as still water, ready to dive into the fray as soon as the horn blows. When it does however, something unexpected occurs. JC Denton targets the wolf first, actually punching it right in the neck! Whatever he did, it was effective, as the wolf whimpers and begins running about the arena in a blind panic, heedless of the cursing and commands of it's master. Dag and JC are left alone to fight it out, although with Denton completely unarmed, it looks like the fight is in Dag's favour. This quickly proves true, as the old man accumulates several hits on the agent. JC struggles, but suffers more and more under the blade of the Dogmaster, and soon struggles to even hit his foe. Although a man of considerable age, Dag still has the wiry strength of an adventurer, and manages to knock over Denton, scoring several more blows. While the two men are locked in a life-or-death struggle, the giant wolf causes considerable amusement in the audience, as his panic sends him running up and down the arena, often bumping into the fighters. Finally, Dag lands a decisive blow with his copper dagger, plunging it deep into Denton's flesh. His spine irreparably damaged, the wounded man sinks to the floor, hacking and coughing blood. The fight continues however, as Denton struggles, unwilling to fail in his mission just yet. Unfortunately for him however, the wounds he has accrued are too numerous and too serious, and before long his blows grow feeble, and his sunglasses fall from his face. The piercing blue eyes dim, and JC slowly stops moving. As the blood softly laps against the stone, Dag calms his wolf, rubs his aching bones, and quietly departs the arena.

Even without his wolf, Dag takes the match. Whatever plans JC had, they failed to come through and he paid the price. His corpse, however, was not able to be collected seemingly disappearing before it could be placed in the catacombs. Whatever the case may be, well fought Dag. You have 50 points to spend on yourself and your wolf, choose wisely.

For our next fight, we have a seemingly insane dwarf (the best kind, I might add) against a distastefully edgy kobold.

Urist the dye-maker, as was his former profession, was actually registered by his friends, who claimed it would be "therapeutic" and might help their friend regain their sanity. While we sincerely doubted their motivations, a mad dwarf armed with a steel greatsword was too good to turn down, and thus here he is.

Edgedancer, as the name suggests, is a kobold living perpetually in a state of danger and darkness. Unable to communicate with any of the more "civilised" races, we aren't sure why he has come to fight. Perhaps it is just to test his mettle, or to sate his depraved and violent desires. In any case, armed with a very sharp steel dagger, perhaps he shall outmaneuver his slower opponent and snatch victory from the jaws of death.

Place your bets folks, this shall be the last of today's fights. Rest assured, however, that many more are to come over the next few days, each and every one ripe with enough violence and mayhem to sate even the hungriest of appetites.

In a fit of madness, the brightly coloured dwarf lunges before the horn even blows, swinging furiously at his smaller opponent. Caught off guard, Edgedancer chitters and springs about nimbly, concentrating on avoiding the deadly blur of steel. It isn't enough however, and the kobold's foot is sheared off at the ankle in just four swings! Yelping in pain, Edgedancer scrambles away from the mad dwarf, his steel dagger seemingly forgotten in a haze of pain and fear. Frothing at the mouth, the former dye-maker turned death-dealer pursues and lands a flurry of strikes, spraying kobold blood all over the arena. Edgedancer, unable to wield the dagger with his ruined arm and unable to stand on his twisted and bleeding legs, is in dire straits. The poor creature is slashed and stabbed again and again, the unrelenting dwarven onslaught cheered on by the bloodthirsty crowd. Kicking the unfortunate kobold violently, Urist finally lays low Edgedancer with a deep and bloody strike to the stomach. With his enemy unconscious and defenseless, it is a simple matter for Urist to line up his blade and swiftly decapitate the rat-like creature. The dwarf, his anger momentarily quieted, looks down at the body, tiny in death. A flicker of hesitation and confusion spasms across Urist's face, before quickly being replaced by a glazed, fevered stare. The bloody sword trailing behind him, the bearded champion turns and heads out of the arena, heedless to the cheers and whoops from the crowd.

I'm starting to think that the wolf is actually really weak, I mean, it literally started to run away after the first hit, and Dag himself is quite weak, he won't stand a chance against someone that survived the first round.

Unless the gladiator targets Dag first but the wolf attacks him and disables him before killing Dag, there is no way he's gonna win, since tourneyanon said that if Dag dies the gladiator automatically wins, even if the wolf managed to kill him after that.

As for Urist, well, that sword can do a lot of damage, but it needs two hands, if one of those arms is disabled, then his effectiveness will decrease dramatically, if he doesn't just drop it. I think his worst enemy is one with high dodging and weapon skill, since he could hit one of Urist's arms easily and just end the fight there.

How good are crossbow's bludgeoning attacks, anyway?

Wanna hear something funny?

I'm doing a test, one of the part of this test is putting trolls with steel armor, a steel shield and a steel short sword against yetis with the same equipment. You see, steel short swords cannot penetrate steel armor, even though, but they can still cause damage through it, problem is that the damage is not lethal, it can tear a muscle, even bruise a bone, but it won't kill the guy. So what happens is, the fight goes on until one of the fighters goes unconscious from the exhaustion, then the guy just keeps pummeling his head with his sword, this makes him so that the guy never wakes up, or wakes up for just a moment and then goes unconscious again immediately, and, as a said before, the damage isn't lethal so the guy just doesn't die.

Now here comes the fun part, you see, after hitting the opponent again and again, the steel short sword starts taking damage, and eventually it breaks, so, what does the guy decide to do after his weapon breaks? Punch him, kick him, strangle him? No, he bashes him with his shield, because since he is holding that, he counts is as a weapon, but, there's a problem.

Shields, atleast when used with no misc. object user skill and against opponents with armor that is made with a material that is equal or better than the one the shield is made of, are awful weapons. You wouldn't believe it, it takes so long, so FUCKING LONG for the guy to die, because everytime the shield hits, the attack is deflected and the force of the blow pulls the neck, tearing the skin, which does almost no damage, so it takes really REALLY long for the guy to bleed out. In fact, some of the guys don't even bleed out, you wanna know how they die? From their infections, they die from their infections faster than they bleed out, that's how fucking bad it is.

Oh, and the guy hitting the guy? He also passes out from exhaustion, and it takes time for him to wake up, so that makes the process even longer.

So, pretty funny right?

Seems marginally practical. Two blades open up two wound channels. The serrations allow you saw and gouge with a glancing thrust, and the fork allows you to catch and ensnare an opponents weapon.

As a polearm, it can out range and exert leverage against short blades. Against other polearms, it has the capacity to catch and stop a thrust, and may even be able to shatter the shaft.

The heavy head may even make it effective to throw.
