I have no idea, honestly, didn't really think about it beyond initial concept. A really COOL way to sue it though is launch a satellite, curve it's trajectory, have it blow up as it goes over and have the wreckage hit targets.
Real expensive, but real cool to look at. It's absolutely stupid to do it like that but why not.

Hey /acg/, what're your favorite Armored Core games, and why? Looking to emulate a few, last one I played was Nexus, and from what I understand, it has the best controls of the PS2 era Armored Cores. What else would you recommend?
>>
>>181397390
Last Raven, It's by far the most rewarding AC game you can play.
>>
>>181397696
How so, anon? I loved Nexus's customization because I could do HIGHSPEEDLOWDRAG or high armor big dakka, and I'm assuming Last Raven's customization would only be better. How's the gameplay, mission variety, etc?

Last Raven is a shorter game than Nexus, but much higher quality. The story is top-notch, replay value is excellent. Mission variety isn't as wide but there are more ways each mission can go (a lot of them have enemies that only show up in certain conditions).

It's also got a few really neat innovations that don't show up in the rest of the series, like making the available missions based on which NPCs are alive or dead, or making the VR arena require bets.

The one downside is that they made the progression a bit more tightly pathed. You can't fail missions, so instead of the arena being a testing zone, missions are instead. So where other games had a single storyline and path but you could fail or mess around within it, LR is very tightly controlled but you get a lot of varied options on which path you want to take.

I think an ideal AC game would feature LR's systems, setting, and progression but with AC3's arena and missions.

are you sure it doesn't work on PCSX2? It seems to emulate fine on that but it just takes a lot of processing power. If you're on PPSSPP you need to workaround cheat:

The cheat prevents it from crashing after a few minutes of gameplay. There's a thing in the code with the PSP version that the emulator doesn't like (had to do with ports built off a certain engine, apparently the bleach games have the same problem) and causes the emulator to hang waiting on something that never comes during combat. This cheat bypasses it and tells the emulator to ignore that hang.

What would be practical? I'm playing Last Raven at the moment, pretty early game.
>>
>>181493781
Heat rifle right plus left rifle and micro missiles with micro missile extensions will take you far.
>>
>>181493781
>>181492245
Oh for early game it's not bad.

Here's the general problem;

>turning extensions on already-fast turning legs
>single fire missile with no extension missiles to complement it
>back radar on a part with a head radar

the weapon might be bad depending on your FCS, too, given that it's a special lock. You should be using F69S or F37H. Otherwise, a standard FCS rifle might be better, with Volute2

Turning extensions are really hard to control unless you're already turning very slowly.

You should use a head with high stability and good defenses and not focus on radar if you use a back radar, though at this stage in the game you might not have much options for heads, but S2 is a solid choice for low weight, high stability, and high defense.
>>
>>181494164
Unfortunately not all of that is available early on. You can get close with the kisaragi left rifle, magoraga, and the 4 shot missile extensions.
>>
>>181495506
I am amazed how you guys can remember what part does or have, like the radar head, just by looking.
>>
>>181495506
>>181494164
Gonna need a better FCS first. I'm on Destroy Enemy Squadron at the dam, and my missiles have veeery poor tracking at the moment. The lack of dual stick is annoying, too.
>>
>>181495617
With the amount of time I've sunk into LR, I can name most of the part names/numbers by just looking. You've got SR head, Helios core, S2 arms, MOLD rifle, LYNX legs, and I think the 3rd generation mirage radar.

For everything else, it's not hard to pop open PPSSPP and check the garage for stats when an anon needs help.

It does help to think of it less about individual parts, and more of generations / lines. Then they generally get heavier and more drainy, but with higher specs, as they go up the line.

Crest heads:

S-line: No radar, defensive
>69S
>70S2
>72S3
>81S4
>85SR
>65SR2

E Line
>73E
>84E2
>85EE

EYE Line
>79XS - EYE
>98XS - EYE2
>05XS - EYE3
>06XS - EYE4

Mirage is a bit vaguer, since they don't mark out the generations as clearly. Basically normal letters are their main line, with Y designating specialized / experimental parts.

>H01 - Wasp
>H02 - Wasp2
>H03 - Beetle
>H04 - Cicada
>H05 - Hornet
>H07 - Cricket
>H09 - Spider
>H10 - Cicada2
>H11 - Queen
>H20 - Firefly

>YH06 - LadyB
>YH08 - Mantis
>YH12 - Mayfly
>YH13 - Longhorn
>YH14 - Sting
>YH15 - Drone
>YH16 - Dynastes
>YH17 - Butterfly
>YH18 - Scarab
>YH19 - Pillbug

The names give some things away.

Wasp - Hornet - Sting - Drone - Queen: All bee-related, they're the general models.
Beetle - LadyB - Longhorn - Dynastes - Scarab: All beetle-related, these are heavy defense models
Spider - Mantis - Mayfly: All predatory non-bee/wasp related. These are aggressive radar models.
Cicada - Cricket - Firefly - Pillbug - Firefly: All small / passive animals, not sure if there's a theme between them.
>>
>>181495982
missile tracking is based on the missile itself, it doesn't change with your FCS.

The FCS will affect how fast they lock on, however. So if you're having trouble getting a lock on, FCS matters. If you're locked on and firing, but they're dodging, try different missiles.

Missiles are generally about sending out a burst of fire expecting half of them to miss, but still doing a lot despite that.
>>
>>181495982
>The lack of dual stick is annoying, too.
Just go into PPSSPP's control settings and under the directional inputs, add the R-analog stick, so that the R-analog now activates the D-pad. Then set your D-pad to the camera. Boom, dual analog.

I agree with this. Just like everything else in AC4/FA, The graphics were very flashy but useless. A lot of the briefings gave you little to no actual information beyond "kill this thing". Then again, most of AC4/FA's missions were pretty linear so maybe they were doing the best with what they had.

Last Raven if you don't want much of your anus left after one game session.
>>
>>181546846
It's a bunch of PSP exclusive parts. R4 rifle, butterfly for the head, arms, chain gun, and core from AC2, energy focused shell shield.

>>181550770
AC3. You CAN start with last raven but it's difficult in a way that assumes you already know how the game works. There's no "easing" you into the difficulty, it goes straight to hard missions right away without explaining the basics. Its also mandatory to beat every mission, you can't fail any. AC3 will walk you through at least the basics before throwing you harder stuff, and you can fail a few missions along the way and still be fine.
>>

What is FROM's obsession with giving their intro cinematic ACs multimissiles? The 4split one is awful. Even AC3s 12lock launcher is useful, despite the missile tracking on that model being terrible.
>>
>>181576228
Multi-missiles were extremely strong in early games but nerfed later on when they changed how the missile tracking worked. They used to separate after a certain distance of being fired, meaning that they were just 4 normal missiles at a reasonable distance. Post-Nexus, multi missiles instead separated of a certain distance away from the target, which means that they rarely hit since firing them from further away don't give you better tracking.

This is why I think AC works as a budget title, instead of a massive AAA production. It doesn't lend itself to being flashy and extravagant. It's kind of a metaphor for how you play the game itself, wherein even the shiniest, most expensive parts can't win you battles by themselves.

Just finished my playthrough of AC1, without H+, and bought all parts. Time to move on to ACPP.
>>
>>181580970
I don't think it's the budget that's the problem, but trying to improve on a formula while meeting publisher demands. It's a Catch-22:
>Do you release the best games you can to your current fans, until they get burned out on the formula?
>Or do you release games that a publisher will sell for you to a new audience, losing your current fans?

AC4 seems to be the changeover where they stopped making games for what they thought would be the best game given their resources, and started making games to match what publishers and creative designers thought would sell/look best. But that trend started really with AC2:AA, which was the first game where there was something missing from the core game design (arena).

I think the critical failure is that since ACLR, none of the audiences -stuck- with the franchise. The people who bought AC4 didn't buy ACFA, same with ACV. I think the idea was that the variations would bring more players into the franchise, but the cross section of players that bought all four games is quite a bit smaller than the cross section of players that consistently bought the PS2 games.
>>
>>181581531
>1 failure

I can feel the pain
>>
>>181582949
One of the hidden parts requires you fail a mission, Guard Wharf Warehouse, because you need to take the part you're defending.

Also apparently you can no longer get H+ once you beat the game, which is a little frustrating, but I'm not planning on carrying it over to ACPP.
>>
>>181582834
That sucks, because I liked all the AC games equally. Just unfortunately how it all happened, but hopefully it's not a permanent stain on the franchise.

I find it so interesting that FROM is so wideley ranged as a game development studio.

You can tell that they find the systems involved in games the most fun part, all of the behind the curtain stuff that build theory junkies love.

But their execution is always, always janky. Tons of little quirks, glitches and the like. They really get down into the details that they fail to see the whole painting sometimes.

>But their execution is always, always janky. Tons of little quirks, glitches and the like. They really get down into the details that they fail to see the whole painting sometimes.

There wasn't a whole lot of glitches and problems during the PS2 games, aside from low framerates. It wasn't until the PS3 games (and is probably most noticeable in dark souls) where you have huge amounts of cut content, glitches that needed patched, which I again attribute to having to constantly change game engines with each new release and having much longer and more complex development cycles.

That isn't to say the PS2-era company was perfect, but they generally had the most consistent quality across their various games, they released games more often, and they released more variety in their titles. Evergrace, Eternal Ring, Otogi, Murakumo, Armored Core, Echo Night, and Shadow Tower made up a pantheon of solid 5/10 titles, where their worst aspects were low budget.

Post-Agetec though, everything that wasn't Souls or AC was a huge failure. We got the hugely delayed Enchanted Arms, and the nightmare that was Steel Batallion Heavy Armor. Otherwise? Ninja Blade. Everything else was a third party port for some other franchise (Monster Hunter Diary, Mobile Suit Gundam, ACE:R, Shadow Assault Tenchu) with only the Gundam game being decent.

What do you attest that to? Is it their publisher either demanding too much or not enough or being a dick? Are they just showing their age? Are they attempting to reinvent the wheel? or do you blame the rising cost and development time of AAA games?

I want to say it's a combination of all these factors, but I feel like that's the lazy way out. There's gotta be something that can be pinpointed as the main issue.

There's a few documented cases of the publishers not approving certain games or providing bad server support.

Sega wanted AC4 to be a 360-marketed shooter, which some people attribute to the reason why 4th gen AC was so easy/different. It also caused them to lose a lot of their fanbase. I think that they also had From change the name of a lot of parts in a patch because they sounded to middle eastern for the western market, not sure on that one.

Ubisoft is apparently very notorious about deadlines and might be some of the reasons why ACFA has so many regulations/patches and worse graphics than AC4. Overall I think that Ubisoft did a good job with ACFA as a publisher considering what they had to work with. But I wouldn't have wanted to see AC go down the assassin's creed route of being extremely handholdy long-term.

Bandai delayed ACV's original release date (2010) until 2012 to put the company to work on Dark Souls. They also refused to provide enough budget for ACVD for an intro video and shut down ACV's servers as soon as VD came out. They also refused to release patches to the west until a year after ACVD's release. Bandai's goal with From was to basically copy Demon's Souls and then use Armored Core as a platform to make Gundam games.

>or do you blame the rising cost and development time of AAA games?
This 100%. The publisher problem startded with how expensive the PS3 was to develop for, and even now with all their bloodborne and dark souls 2/3 money, From is still only 2-3 bad games from bankruptcy. The other factors are important (usually more about forcing From to make a game for a target market, rather than making the best game they can) but the rising cost is by far the strongest factor involved here.

And From isn't unique in that realm, with the PS3 generation a LOT of B-tier developers got squeezed out and turned to larger production companies to support them.
