It's just the nature of the genre. Most mobage games are about collecting waifus and being easy to get into. OPTC is neither of that, while also not pandering to the Otaku audience that gravitate these sort of games.
I dunno how dead this game actually is, but the fact that the only threads about this game are on a board where people only focus on their specific threads doesn't really help get this game big in here.

Basically someone who was super helpful with a lot of legends. Used to offer barrel taps when the game had that, made raid and fortnight strategies, put up any captain you needed and added anyone and everyone to their friends list. Then somehow, someone found out this person was a girl irl and then things went crazy. People started posting obsessively about her, any time she posted a guide people started tearing into her accusing her of stealing it from a blog/reddit/their guide and general hostility till she just stopped bothering to post guides. Also the fact people were trying to steal her account using said information in the guides so they knew what characters were on the team since she was also farming raids/fortnights. Keep in mind this person never confirmed or denied their gender, in fact never even mentioned what they were in the first place. After constant shit slinging, people accusing Storm Pirates of shitposting about herself for attention with no proof and people kicking her off their friends list not to mention people impersonating her. She used to post with an image of some blonde anime slut and people started imitating her to further damage the person's reputation. Now it seems Storm Pirates quit the game so we lost a pretty important person in our community.

Friendly reminder to clear all Z-Ain-Binz colosseum levels in Exhibition, Underground, and Chaos difficulties

is there a way yet to remove damage reduction debuffs? I'm thinking of just stalling Ain with an Akainu+Sanji team. All of my red PH units have maxed autoheal sockets.

Use this team instead. You can literally play blindly, and still win

Stall for specials, wait out the 5 turn lock on Smoker while collect some block orbs. Doffy+Shiki specials after lock is off (have Fuji on a 1 turn CD at most) and otko Smoker

Kill filler mobs on Ain turn 1-2. Use Fuji special on turn 2. Use Sabo on turn 3, kill her turn 4.

Zoro and Fossa is only there for being STR driven characters

So I recently started and the game mechanics seem simple enough. Thanks to recent events I've been able to max out three crew members but I have a Bartolomeo Kuma among a few characters I'd like to use. I can't because of the cost so this is my current team.

Should I continue grinding story mode and save all gems?

Grind story or farn the fortnights for unique units.
If you find you can't do something, just level up your units with fodder, evolve them and try again.
Save gems for Sugofests or increasing boxspace.

Since you're still so low level and have nothing, just reroll for a legend this upcoming Wednesday at 7:00. I did the same mistake as you and started without a legend, the game was unforgiving. Best legends for beginners are "Akainu, Navy HQ's Strongest Forces" and "Monkey D. Luffy, Gathering of the Straw Hats". But if you like any other legend you may begin with them.
