I rarely spend more than 3 turns there. I could reduce that to 2 if I didn't care about the elite sword.
The main focus is reinforcing the Lenster knights ASAP and if you're playing slowly you'll also want to fight the dragon knights, but your movement is very limited so you don't have many options aside from using Asvel.
Chapter 13 is similar but a lot better.

My big need right now is a defensive team, since it's always a tossup for one or two defenses a week at most. I'd like something more consistent that the AI can't fuck up.

I'm leveling a few new chars (RobinM, Setsuna, Clarine) and I put a Tiki to carry them through, but them Bitchhardt or his Sisterhardt appears and he proceeds to oneshot everything I have from a mile away and funnily enough, the ones that appear are like 30 def/res+ making them virtually invulnerable to anything I can throw at him.

Or when I was leveling another set of chars and he just went on to oneshot my 30 Res Nino.

Seriously, not only are those chars broken op the game also seems to randomize their stats and with my luck I get to fight raid bosses every now and then.

Gaiden/Echoes is by far the most divergent game in the series gameplay-wise. Whatever issues Fates has, it is true to say that it is much more what people expect in a fire emblem game than Echoes. Some people do not care for how off-path Echoes was, I think, although now that I've played it I do think that some of their ideas were quite interesting, the weapon arts in particular.

I find BoL usually works better on indirect units, though if you have a bulky indirect or a DC unit that needs to be at high HP for QR or breakers then it could work. I was actually experimenting with using Threaten Attack on Maskcina to cancel out L&D's penalties when facing melee units and dragons, though Marth's better bulk probably makes that easier to use effectively. He'd probably prefer Threaten Speed though to ensure doubling on things Lucina can that he can't. The Spur Speed he comes with can also be helpful if you run teammates that need a bit of a boost.

I was talking about RD in comparison to SoV, but I guess since Fates had similar issues in a lot of areas it was easy to mix up.

As for how RD could have done the faction thing better, maybe make it so the inital team actually has a chance to catch up with all the prepromotes without spending assloads of bonus XP? I think Dawn Brigade was the one that suffered the most from having the least units ready for late game. Not to mention since a lot of the events in those first chapters are independent of each other, it could have been interesting to jump from one scenario to the other at any time.

Because the gameplay ISN'T shit? Weapon Arts added a lot more reason to use early game weapons much further in without making lategame stuff completely useless. Dungeon exploration adds a new layer of depth to the environment. Spells ignoring terrain bonuses gave a reason to use magic even when there weren't a bunch of high def armors around. And bows were actually useful for like the third time ever thanks to their crazy range spread and high damage potential.

The major magic nerf in Fates is reducing Nosferatu into an early-game defensive Tome only and making your base Mages harder to use than your regular units. Magic still has decent Mt and quite a few enemies still have low Res. Mages have an option to overcome their biggest hard counter (Ninjas) with Calamity Gate as well.

Magic sucked donkey balls in the Tellius games. It has shit Mt and enemies Res are not that low so the terrible Mt is even more obvious, and enemies have ridiculous HP as well especially on higher difficulties. The powerful Tomes weigh like a fucking boulder and the effective damage multiplier is a joke. The only kind of magic that was stronger in the Tellius games were high-ranged Tomes, though I personally never liked them at least when it's in the hands of your units as it becomes way too OP.
