The story behind them is that, with Eden's power contributing, Ilias and Eden go to their birthplace to recreate new ones. Eden is hesitant but agrees after Ilias says Eden will be the older sister. They enthusiastically treat Eden as an older sister, playing various games with her... that are borderline (if not outright) abusive, but Eden's just THAT happy from being #1 that she loves her big sister role.

They have a sidequest that involves taking them to various climates/places around the world to see the beauty of the world.

When you meet up with Eden, Ilias gets the idea to head on over to the Hall of Creation to recreate Lucifina and Michaela to add some extra firepower on their side. She wouldn't have been able to do it on her own, but with Eden's power as a Seraph, she had the confidence to be able to carry out the ritual. It's just that, Lucifina and Michaela end up coming out as younger, weaker versions of themselves, as Eden was too weak from keeping up the barrier around Paradox World's Ilias for 30 years.

Luka wonders out loud if his mother was recreated, but Ilias tells him that all she did was recreate Lucifina's base form and that the new Lucifina-chan doesn't have any of the memories Luka's mother had. Lucifina ends up overhearing their conversation and decides to be Luka's mom. Luka is touched by the sentiment.

Lucifina isn't really crazy, just, uh, bloodthirsty. She says some pretty violent expressions to convey her excitement and enjoys seeing blood get spilled.

I hope the last part unlocks the option of taking both Alice and Ilias at the start to get a true ending. ...but the chances of that happening are close to zero I would think. Aside from a few more bug fixes and content patches (recruitable Part 2 Battle Fucker patch in particular) and perhaps a few blog reveals of Monsters/Angels that'll be encountered in Part 3, they're pretty much all that'll be on the horizon for the next 22 months or so.

You can't have Alice if you pick Illias, so no you don't get her back in any way. There's a reason why Reaper warns you to remove stuff from the opposite companion before starting NG+.

You do however get to keep anyone that is only recruitable in the Alice-route as a companion. So you'll still be able to put Morrigan, the Lilith Twins, and Alicetromelia in your party if you wish once you unlock the Pocket Castle again in your NG+ run.

Actually you know what. I kinda take this statement back.

Looking back on the original trilogy, Chapter 2 was released barely 9 months after Chapter 1 was. It was only Chapter 3 that took almost a year and a half to come out.

Part 2 was stated by TRTR to have been bigger than Part 1 by 50%. I would hazard a guess why a full two years were needed to complete Part 2 since large parts of the world map had to be finished, the bulk of the story needed to be fleshed out, majority of important locations and characters added, and the remainder of the gameplay implemented. Since most of the hard work should already be done all they'd have to do at this point aside from continuing to finetune Part 2, is finish off the story and add the remainder of the locations (like Hellgondo, the remaining three Tartarus pits, and some unreachable locations in Part 2). Plus, there's less than 150 of the 500 total characters that were promised to be added.

So maybe...just maybe there's a very small chance that Part 3 might come out in a year's time?

Keep those fingers crossed I guess.

You would be right since there probably won't be a big alternative world to go to considering how long it takes to develop, but in terms of story, I think it's going to take a bit more time if TRTR decides to put in a third route where you take both Alice and Ilias (which I hope he does). It would take time write and rearrange everything for it.
