I can't imagine how huge a bitch you'd have to be in order to be annoyed by a naming prompt. Your false equivalency is great, too. I have no control over anything that happens in a story; I have control over what happens in a game. >>
>>181294306

>>
>>181294176
Set a deadline and learn all about the pleasure of having to cancel half your game to meet it.
>>
>>181294436
Sounds like a good motivation to procrastinate less.
>>
>>181294176
The hardest part is that no boss is going to yell at you for failing to meet it. Future-You has no accountability with Past-You, unfortunately. And the more you practice forgiving yourself for slacking, the more you'll find it acceptable. So once you have more clear ideas of realistic deadlines, then do not disrespect your own goals and timeframes.
But for starting with no idea, just set something. If you fail the deadline, take an honest look at whether the deadline was unrealistic or if you slacked. Pick something that you think might take a week, and give yourself a week, then assess how that week went and if you failed, whether it was slack vs unrealistic.

do u guys use outline or not in pixel arts??
i feel like it looks much better without outline,
but with outline, it will have a clearer image and stand out more.

or it doesn't matter at all?
>>
>>181294693
No outline is harder but can look better if you manage to isolate the characters from the background with good sense of colors and brightness.
>>
>>181294693
depends a lot on the background and the contrast
>>
>>181294693
There are other ways to make things stand out. Also god that fucking shit on the bottom left, what the fuck, erase it please. The other three look great though. The vehicle is better without outline. Not sure if it's your work but if it isn't oh well.
>>
>>181294693
you can do half outlines
>>
>>181294693
Really depends on your environment. Most of the time +outline is preferable though for readability. -outline works great for non-interactables/background.
>>
>>181294176
First come up with a detailed list of tasks and throw down a rough estimate. Put your list here and we'll comment/critique it.

One thing to keep in mind is scope creep. For your first game, a finished game is more important than continually adding features or make your game 'perfect'.

In windowed mode, you can't click and drag the game window. And at lower resolutions, the window is automatically resizing to fit the screen. In fullscreen mode, everything is working perfectly though.
I'm trying to think of reasons why anybody would rather play in window over fullscreen. I don't know if streamers need that or not. I'm using GM2 and the camera system is fucked so it took me several days to get to this point. So I don't wanna unravel that mess if possible.

You can't possible conceive of all the niche situations that crop up that could cause someone to want to run in a window. I practically never do it myself, but every now and then something just comes up and it's convenient for whatever reason.

It's something your game should be able to manage and if you're planning on selling your game then expect people to bitch about it. If you're just making a free project then people don't have much right to complain and you can get away with pretty much anything.

I think if I use the skills I learned from making bokube I could do it, it would just need a year of dev time $5000 worth of programming code from a freelancer, and I cant of course now because I can only focus on one project and bokube isnt finished yet not to mention I have another game already planned out to make right after bokube. (I'm trying to make and finish a game every year now).

I'm honestly going to return to knight game in 2019 and will more than likely be able to pull it off after Bokube and CT3.

Finally some actual gameplay. So the idea is: the encounters are done with a cardgame, nothing new here. However the player shouldn't have to do a card match against everything, specifically weaker beings.

So there's some possibilities:
a) A simple "strife" (pic related) which consist of flipping cards from a small deck against each-other. The cards and strategies are simple. The rewards are a bit lower. If you lose the strife then an encounter happen.
b) An encounter start a proper card match in another area designed for that (still working on that). You can expect a real card game with proper mechanics and even the use of abilities. I've shown some pics of that last week I think.
c) Some npcs specifically like to strife and do '2 out of 3s' with you for example.

It's also possible to sabotage your own strife deck to have weaker cards and start encounters against weaker beings (why not).

So for now the strife works, the card library is done, I still need some tweaking on the shuffling and adding some juice to the ui. The ui is up to some redesign but at least its functional. I've added some loading screen pics even if things are loading fast enough atm that I either print-screen 0% or 100%. I know this is a long post but I thought I'd explain a bit since I've been posting mostly isometric stuff for the past weeks but from now it should be more varied.

why do you want to avoid msvc so much? if you don't like the ide you can still compile with msvc on the command line and only use the ide for the debugger (which is worth it).

So I heard. However the blunder with injected telemetry functions mid-2016 made me wary. Even though I'm not in full copper cage mode yet I like to look at alternatives.

that was a pretty absurd bit of moral panic. all they did was log program entry and exit for event tracing. event tracing is something the dev needs to set up for it to do anything. nothing is being sent to microsoft, the logged events are something you might receive if you set up a telemetry system for your users and by default they do nothing at all. it's completely innocuous and they removed it anyway because insane people on reddit were comparing it to literally being raped.

please don't base your development choices on the opinions of insane people.

Infinite looks like a next gen game but still works on 8 year old toasters and has the fastest combat of all the Bioshocks. I can forgive the rest of its faults. I couldn't even beat the first Bioshock because the piece of shit kept crashing. And while I was able to beat 2, it was super boring. Infinite was actually fun up until the dimension traveling and was still interesting enough to keep me playing until the end. But most importantly it had a top tier waifu. Whatever faults it had were cancelled out by her.

Employing a junior programmer in Australia full time costs around 45 to 50k AUD, which is around 34 to 38k USD.

The minimum legal full time wage in Australia is 31k AUD a year. Every person you hire full time HAS to earn more than 31k.

Employing say 3 people for a small cafe can cost 100k AUD a year easily. Most businesses, with overheads and leasing costs are lucky to get away with 250k AUD a year running costs alone.

Business is expensive, but you only need to break even to stay afloat. That's how all those shitty little shops keep sitting around forever.

For game development, you can easily get away with 80k AUD a year running costs and 160k for big 2 year projects (aka. your average indie game).

finished it, it's cute, i was surprised by the variety of attacks and i really enjoyed the spin attack, i can't say i want to use them on little animals that can only rush to my direction.
as for what i didn't like :
-floaty controls
-camera is too slow to catch up with the player and you can die because of it
-some level design problems, you can't be expected to do tight jumps between thorns with an enemy on screen and every attack you do will move you too, rolling on hills can go really fast and you find a death trap at the end of it.
but those are minor things you can fix easily, you have potential anon.
>>
>>181322905

So I have three things to say
1. Once you die, your score gets reset to what it was at the save point. You also get extra lives based on score, it seems. Do the math.
2. The spin attack can be... interesting. I killed a plant and then combod into a fly and flew down and almost hit the spikes.

3. by the way of plants; fuck the plants

Dev here, it's hard for me to judge after playing the game so much that the platforming has become trivially easy. The final levels will be easier however, at least the first ones. I'm not focusing on that yet as the gameplay keeps changing from demo to demo so I need to keep making new levels and I have to cram every feature in those new levels.

>>181323242
The score gets reduced by 500 + all the points you got from defeating enemies since the last checkpoint as they get respawned, to avoid rewarding dying in any way. You get extra lives every 5000 points, but you shouldn't get any if you've already reached that score before. I'll check if there are bugs here though.

When that Anon said "I don't want to make a meme game" and you responded with ">I'm so PROUD of not being successful" you imply that someone should make things more in line with what would generate success rather than what they want to make, a making furry porn can lead to success.

your problem is that you've implicitly replaced "success" with money. i meant "success" as in being good enough at making what you want to be recognized and respected for it. the money is a side effect i never even bothered mentioning.

that anon's claim was that the devs of FK were only successful because they compromised some ideal or debased themselves for money: stooping down to "memes" (?) and being like furry porn (???). this is his excuse for not being as successful: he would never compromise his integrity like the devs of FK did.

the thing is that the devs of FK didn't compromise shit, anon's "integrity" is imaginary and he's just acting like a bitter old cunt because someone is doing better than him.

It's really all the same.

You only see the dueling kind of spearmanship from eastern martial arts, because formation spearmanship is very simple and straightforward.

That being said, the spear for mounted cavalry in the east wasn't nearly as popular in the west, as heavy cavalry preferred lances.

>>181327171

That spear is very short. Spears that length were usually used with a shield (in battle), because it could be used with one hand.

Battle Spears were usually longer to keep the enemy at bay, with cavalry spears being a little bit shorter to make them easier to wield on a horse.

I'll do a few lengths to give you some ideas. Doesn't matter much though, concept is pretty much the same for all of them.

I need some help with Lua/Love

So I store all entities in a table, say, gameobjects, that uses objects themselves as a key

Then I basically do this
for key, value in next, gameobjects do
value:tick(dt)
end
While tick() may or may not add new objects to the table or set some of the objects to nil (but I don't call remove)

So this works great on luajit 2.0.4 but on lua 5.2.4 this causes iterator invalidation, and apparently what I'm doing (adding new elements while iterating) is actually illegal?

So, two questions, why does it work with luajit and doesn't with lua, and how can I fix it (what is the correct approach), preferably without giving up the ability to push new elements into live table or I should push them into a different table and concatenate those two after each iteration?

you should never iterate through a table while adding/removing stuff unless your doing it in reverse (for removing), the correct way is that you queue the adding and removing, then you apply changes after your loop, the table will be updated the next frame and will have no problems

What are some games that did full 3D level designs right for flying characters ?
I want to do something similar to Zone of the Enders but I can't picture the level design in another way than "Big empty rooms with some geometry inside so that it doesn't look like just a big empty room"

I like the art style and general feel of the guns. Character speed is just right and gives me flashbacks of the older arena shooters.

But the Enemy AI is pretty...
Well it's pretty shit.
Where as the dev nailed the aesthetic and gun feel, the enemies are far too easy to kill.

There's also a number of bugs. Two enemies got stuck in the ceiling for me on all three consecutive play troughs. There's also a minor visual bug when you switch weapons when zoomed in with the SMG. I could also speedrun the level on my second run within 35 seconds without touching an enemy.

I do however like the music and the fact you used vertical level design to hide extra items.

Overall pretty good, work on the AI, that extra level and keep posting here.

To be honest there's only one game from the early 2000s I could think of which is straight out of about vikings, the rest, like Skyrim, rather just takes inspiration from that culture.

And don't try to appeal to normies. That's out fo the reach of the 1MA indie dev. Unless you target mobile, of course.

I'm not sure if the FOV changes make the game more fun. Its harder to plan what you're going to do. Half of the fun is seeing what your actions do to the other players. For instance a new player would have no idea that those guys got sucked out of the air hole.

If my memory is right, it was Rune. It was still in development when I was playing with the multiplayer demo with some friends. It was a fun DM. I don't know what the game itself is about.

Oh, and yes, another viking game could be Lost Vikings 1-2, but that has so much sci-fi in it that it hardly is one, in my opinion.
>>
So I have a game that has gotten some decent amount of attention and I'm told to market it even more, since this thread is talking bout marketing I want to ask how.

I already have a dev blog on tumblr, after that what's next? If I make a twitter I can participate in those weekly tags, but substantial weekly progress that's worth showing is kind of pushing it for a 1MA
>>
I wouldn't really copy Skyrim, what I was thinking about was having my setting around the western and eastern norse settlements in 11th century and it talks about how they dissapeared. This could especially work since I have old Inuit people nearby and have found some interesting myths and I'm thinking about using those for my story.

My problem is pretty much that I have my main mechanics and gameplay figured, but I'm searching for settings which could work well with it.
>>
>>181336152
There aren't enough imo. There's quite a few that are just regular tolkien fantasy games but with hints of nordic folklore mixed in, but they're not exactly viking games are they. Spaceship Crew Self-Defense Simulator

There is nothing which says "i'm a professional" more than a fucking anime icon for your exe.
Unironically liked the game though. The line of sight mechanic works pretty well and you took the effort and time (lmao it's not a bug, its a feature) to put in little things like shooting the window sucking everyone out of the room.

Minor nagging:
Give the weapons a hard spot on the first 4 number hotkeys. Its annoying enough you have to pick up the weapons every re-spawn,
don't make me having to rebind them every single time as well.

You kept it fairly simple and the coding seems to work pretty well.
Put in more little suprises and think about how to make it more difficult in further levels.

Send emails! Lots of them. To youtubers and journalists. Don't ask if they want a key. Just give em the key.
Get smaller youtubers and journalists to cover you and it will make you look popular and then the big channels will cover you.
Do their job for them. Give writers ideas of what to talk about, like your game's gimmicks and why they're interesting.

That's what I hear, anyway.

You know the LÖVE framework? (aka love2d)

It's pretty good. It has some advantages that I value:
>simple to make games in without thinking about OpenGL
>batteries included (sort of)
>a love2d game can easily be packaged for Android

But it has one big disadvantage:
>Lua

I hate Lua, but I like C++.
Is there a framework similar to love2d that I can use with C++?
Ability to easily package the project for Android is a must.

SDL has its Render API so it's basically what I need, but last I checked packaging an SDL-based project for Android wasn't really straightforward, so I'm trying to find something better.

Visually, I guess it's the easiest to imagine Assassin's Creed (or third person thief) without HUD and focus on figuring out everything by yourself by exploring villages, getting into conversations with citizens, finding clues that bring you to your target etc.

That's why I'm thinking about Viking settlements on Greenland now, because I can use their actual story about dissappearance and make it so the player was the reason behind it. I've also found some shapeshifting creatures from Inuit legends, and I could maybe make the protagonist think that they have been lurking amongst humans in Norse settlements, so he is eliminating them ony by one, thinking that he is saving the Vikings, but in reality, he is killing innocent villagers and destroying their resources. Little by little, as the game progresses, you can see houses in those settlements getting demolished, population has shrinked, people are dying from various diseases because of your actions (you just followed that book, thinking you are helping the people or something), etc. Hell if I know anymore...

I'm tryharding so much to create some narrative around this that if I don't figure it out by the end of this week, I might as well just drop it. Creating story around gameplay seems to be harder than vice-versa to be honest, but I think I have some original mechanics and I'd prefer not to drop it.

SFML maybe, but SDL2 should be good.

Another thing what Löve has is the Box2D library included, so you might want to try that out also.

OpenGL is not that hard, but I admit if you don't have much time for devving, it will take long weeks to understand the basic, and months to realize its full potential.

>and eastern norse settlements in 11th century
That is why you are stuck.

The god damned norse romanticism is the culprit. Don't get me wrong, I am not telling you to stop liking the norse - I am telling that thanks to norse romanticism, people have an extremely narrow vision of Viking Age North-Europe. Norse and their shenanigans were merely the tip of the iceberg of "happenings" during their time. This gives the false impression that the rest of the Baltic Sea was practically inhabited or was inhabited by people living in huts.

Just to give you a taste of what you have been missing:
>proto russians
There were several tribal confederations, consisting of different tribes. Slavoboos would like to tell that they were all slavs. In reality they were a mixture of different tribes and peoples and not always majority slavs.
>lake cities
There were trading cities along the riverways. These acted as Viking Age equivalent of colonies for the more powerful slav majority confederations further south. The inhabitants of these cities kept to their cities and rarely strayed far from the river. In the forests and plains surrounding them lived finno ugric tribes.
>edge of Siberia
Edge of Siberia was accessible through proper river navigation. The people in there were kinda like Inuits, but constrained to endless taiga and tundra. These people had stories about short and technologically advanced people - like dwarves - who supposedly inhabited underground tunnels in their land.
>Finnic people on eastern coast of Baltic sea
Revered as mages and sages by norse. Their religion differed greatly from norse pantheon - instead choosing to worship spirits, the dead and the underworld. Swedes didn't bother to raid them, since they had been living beside them since forever and knew exactly how to deal with their raids.

To make money on mobile you have a couple options.

1. to have a massive marketing budget and make a game that sucks out the soul of your gamers
2. make a legit quality product and sell it at a fraction of the price that it would sell on PC or console, still market it a shitton
3. get noticed by sheer effort/luck while probably having a good game, this is roughly as likely as winning the lottery

It's already difficult to get mobile gamers to spend money on anything with a high production value. Why the fuck would they spend it on shovelware?
And to make any money out of ads you need a userbase of millions which isn't going to happen if you make shovelware.

They were mostly Finnic. There's a reason the majority of modern Russia is still today genetically Finnish.

>Finnic people on eastern coast of Baltic sea
Were spread on a massive area. Pic related gives an idea.
>Their religion differed greatly from norse pantheon - instead choosing to worship spirits, the dead and the underworld
Finns had gods much like the Norse did. The main god Ukko was basically Thor and Odin combined and his symbol was also his hammer much like Thor's.

History of this time is limited but also really fucking interesting. I'd happily recommend pulling inspiration from history beyond the most popular ones. Especially if your country has interesting history like this.

Alright. I'm not gonna comment on your choice of colors because at some point, it boils down to a matter of choice.

Your use of lines could be improved, specifically line weight. at the moment it varies heavily all over the place.

The characters anatomy particularly the clavicle area could be more defined as to make the body less flat. also the neck is a tube like shape and defining the clavicle will make that more apparent.

I see you're going for a particular style so you've heavily simplified some features and exaggerated others, such as the eyes.

But i highly recommend that you do some daily studies on the structure of the human face.
ya gotta master the rules before breaking them.

>These sound interesting, would appreciate some sources for this.
Its hard to track the sources down. You will just have to dive down into the dark depths of wikipedia and the source links of the articles. Due to the low traffic of these pages, expect to find information bent to one -booism or another -booism. It will be useful to also read the "Talk" pages since often times useful links are posted there and boycotted by -boos for not confirming their slanted vision and thus never reach the actual wiki page. Be especially aware of the Russian nationalism bleeding into those pages. These are generally not wrong but often the information is bent and/or misrepresented.

Honestly, trying to learn about the history of the region we today know as "western Russia" is like going Indiana Jones in some old and clearly biased tomes and scrolls in order to find clues and hints about a long forgotten civilization.

>Summary about what I remember from my searches:
The rivers from East Baltic sea all the way to the northern shore of Black Sea formed the "Fur Road", which was the little brother of Silk Road. It was like a 2000km long Panama Channel connecting North Europe with middle east. Huge amount of trade was bottlenecked into these rivers, so it was very lucrative to impose tolls on.

However, it was also very easy to starve neighbors downstream by not letting trade through or by asking absurdly high tolls. So, for everyone the prime objective was to secure the entire road for themselves all the way from Baltic Sea to Black Sea. The tribes on the coast of the Black Sea had Byzantine Empire nearby to influence them. So they adopted the Creek colonization model. They effectively founded cities along the river as resting stops and tolling stations for traders. At start, they started out little enclaves on riverbanks or on islands in these rivers, since the locals were not exactly happy with that. Eventually the entire Fur road was full of these cityes.

Should I just use a space background?

Originally I had planned to have the map divided into different areas with different properties. I could divide each are with straight lines and illustrate an interesting property of hyperbolic space: straight lines diverging from each other.

But the problem with that it requires areas to become narrow at some points and doesn't look as good as I had hoped. Often too many different areas are visible at one time making it hard to feel immersed in one particular area.

I could do a plain grassy background instead, like this one. Or I could do a space background with dust clouds and parallax stars. Parallax isn't as appropriate in this case though because only the klein projection resembles a plain actual hyperbolic 3 space.

quick question, if you have a room/ship in space with two (or more) breaches on opposite directions, provided that it is supplied constantly with oxygen so it has constant pressure, where would objects within it go?
i'm trying to implement something with vector fields and i don't know if i should make objects go to the closest breach or apply both forces at the same time, but with the later objects can stand still if they're pulled at opposite directions.

>Finns had gods much like the Norse did.
Weren't these figures more middle way between spirits and gods? As far as I understand, the invasion of Christianity was what properly introduced the concept of gods. I'd say that these figures were more along the lines of grand spirits or chief spirits rather than gods.

>The main god Ukko was basically Thor and Odin combined and his symbol was also his hammer much like Thor's.
Ukko being the main god is an interesting thing about Finns. Since some other Finnic people had a different main god - Tor/Taara/Tooru/Toorum/Tuuri. Significant examples - Estonians, Khanty.

Not fun. The only mechanic to evade damage you give me is flash and even that doesn't work when being close as enemies have lighting-fast reaction and noscope you in nanoseconds. If you are ripping Souls off then rip it right. Prevent them from rotating during the attack sequence and I will consider playing it again next time.
Also, current rendering doesn't do your model justice. I had my jaw dropped when you showed screenshots of your character. In Unity it looks like shit.

maybe that's not clear enough, i meant you supply that room with enough oxygen to negate the lost pressure, the breaches will still suck up everything, but it will keep doing it constantly (think a bottle with two holes but is still being filled, water would still be escaping from both holes).

Music is good, but (although I'm not that good at giving critiques)
>there is no panning, spread that shit around, it will make everything clearer (keep only the kick right at the center)
>there are places where it gets a bit too chaotic and it lacks focus because too many instruments are playing at the same time
>levels could be improved, you are losing focus because of that. When the theme is playing accompanied by strings, try reducing the strings or bringing the theme up, and cutting other instrument frequencies in that range, since the theme is completely overshadowed by them
>I feel it lacks high end, and this is probably the most important thing, since it sounds like it is playing inside a small box or something similar, use some references (t b h, I'm also having problems with this often), did you do any mastering?

I can't tell if the instrument quality is below average (I mean, since it is a free soundfont, it probably is), or you did that on purpose.

TL;DR - better volumes, EQ and panning.

How do AAA devs bring innovation to their games? I'm trying to figure out what makes e.g. Uncharted or Tomb Raider so special. I mean, the mechanics are always more or less the same, you shoot, you hide behind a cover, some exploration, la la la. I often don't even want to think about going in that direction with my game, since I can't think of anything original, but then again, what original things are they doing?
