You run very fast and there are no interruptions if you can dodge obstacles. The boost button isn't a nearly universal solution like in Boost games and is a lot more precious as well.

The controls are bad, but I have well over 200 hours of experience with Heroes and still play it every now and then so they're manageable to me. I'm used to it. Also the music is great, the fast pace helps make it feel more thrilling than slower special stages.

There's so many splinter groups because there's no one definitive style of Sonic game - there's multiple gameplay styles that appeal to people or don't.
It's why with recent games they're trying to bring all those groups together by including multiple play styles except Adventure but that normally leads to lacklustre gameplay on all styles (ie the Classic gameplay in Generations being garbage) so everyone just gets more angry.
