It really goes down to what you're interested in, there's a lot of variety.

Stainless steel for vanilla+, broken crescent for crusades, bellum crucis for the M2 EB, but poor translation I heard. Before warhammer TW came out the WH mod was pretty good, lots of content, but unstable as fuck even after many fixes. Thera was quite good if a little simple and easy, mainly because it was very stable.

Then there's stuff like napoleonic warfare or 30 years war, you name it.

Only plebs like cannons, mortars can be used throughout the whole battle whilst Cannons need elevation and their guards will then be far away from the main army which means they can't reinforce the front line.

Just a bronze age total war would be nice if it had really deep campaign mechanics to make up for limited rosters. The factions are pretty damn colourful as well and it could have an apocalyptic feel ending with the eruption of Thera and Doric invasions. A biblical campaign dlc is unlikely but would also be quite interesting with a detailed map of the middle east.

In the lore in Kislev society only women are allowed to use magic for some strange reason (kind of like Brettonnia). There is like a whole group of priestesses who surround the Ice Queen Katarin and practice a form of ice magic unique to Kislev.

The issue is problematic because similar to Bretonnia's diplomatic situation, they have little to no business expanding anywhere. Bretonnia has an interesting system of some defensive play while sending out Crusading armies. Kislev doesn't have this, they're purely defensive.
Kislev would be like WRE in Attila except siege battles are less interesting and you're being attacked across far fewer provinces.
Additionally, their presence would pretty much require custom chaos invasion triggers to approach any sort of challenge which would then be more of a hassle for multiplayer campaigns.
They need a bit more room/provinces to not just start with everything, Norscans need to be more than just a more effective version of Chaos Warriors set to mindless zerg,(which we may get with the race pack, we'll see) and there needs to be more going on in the northern World's Edge mountains before they can be something that is worth playing.
Even then I can't think of a victory condition other than just "survive", which is incredibly boring.

CA likes to do their rivaling factions thing for these games. So Game 3 will most likely be either:

It would work really well on chaos too, because they already move painfully slow. But I don't think that's really reflected on the campaign map.

But CA was talking about adding army-wide buffs and traits in game 2, so maybe they could add debuffs and curses as well.

Tomb Kangs as well have a feature where when you kill one of their leaders or special units, your entire army or character gets cursed with a persistent debuff, health drain, etc.

That's fine, it's still lazy and nonsensical as a victory decision. Wiping out the Empire is proposed because that's the only other thing Kislev borders.
Have them take a couple of northern provinces as victory conditions, along with making sure the VC are dead, along with probably something like owning key passes through the northern world's edge mountains.
As a victory condition play on them reclaiming the land they once migrated from in a game three or combined campaign format.

That's the bottom line.
You could give them Empire as a victory condition, but it'd be mod-quality. It wouldn't fit.
That's a reason to not have them in game 1.
While waiting for game 3 and more map helps justify them more.

Alright.
2nd campaign.
25 turns faster than the first one.
Would have been better if I had 3 or 4 armies instead of 2. I overestimated how much income per turn I would need and kept costs down by not having other armies. Hell I'm in the process of getting my professional armies right now. Just fazed out swordsmen. Getting giant artillery.

Finally. I can put the Empire to rest for a while. 2 campaigns and that's all I played. Vampires or Elves next since I just bought their DLC.

It depends. Hellcannon shots when they hit do feel very substantial.
Stuntie cannons are incredibly accurate and good against large units.
mortars are good at ground firing into a massed blob, helstorm just hits enough to be worthwhile, hellblaster is superb against armor cunts if you take care of it right.

As for sieges, towers to explicitly have full map range as a design decision to force the attacker to attack. Though you can still abuse their arcs and quickly gun down one tower and abuse the system.

Jesus, how the hell are you guys are able to finish campaigns so quickly? And that's a long victory, I finished my first dwarf campaign on normal between 250-275 turns if I recall right. You say you could field 3-4 armies, I can barely field 2 proper armies by 100 turns I think, granted I have a lot of elite troops. Is the key to victory fielding more armies but with basic units?

Now I'm stuck with vampire cunts on hard, around turn 300 I think, dwarfs got really big, are besieging me and I think it will take atleast 500 turns to end this, granted vampiric corruption is quite shitty mechanic, nice at start but a burden later on.

I probably suck at TW, but I'm amazed how people can play and win multiple legendary campaigns like it's nothing. On my hard VP campaign I even set battle difficulty to normal.

Comes down to how naturally you can understand and use the mechanics of the game while reacting to curve balls.
Like Greenskins, if you don't know just how much the main stuntie faction has it in for you, you'll probably expand south first and then boom you lose a province or two to thorgrim.

However if you do know what you're doing, then you spawn a waaaagh stack and take the stuntie capital turn 18 or so. And the rest of the campaign is just mopping up.

My VC campaign I blitzed the two starting provinces perfectly. Then I sat on my ass for forty turns and got tech and spread corruption to be able to expand comfortably.

Funny thing, I really tried to enjoy the greenskin campaign.

I just suck at conquering I think, with any faction, I spend so many turns besieging castles. Then chaos spawns with it's bullshit doomstacks, I wouldn't mind fighting them, but hellcannons are such such a pain in the ass arty, sniping my flying units better than soviet SAM in vietnam. Easily the least enjoyable faction to fight battles against.

My biggest mistake I think, that I try to build up and secure provinces so I have no rebellions, while fielding 2 armies, 3 if I have insane economy. Probably I just should field more armies made of basic units and fight more manual battles. But then an elite stack comes out of nowhere.

Aside from that, I'm curious how you guys deal with LL chaos invasion (Archaon, chicken, Kholek, Sigvald) armies which stick together, so far I have been lucky and managed to pick them off one by one, had some luck with autoresolve, but feels like cheating. Wish there would be more incentive on just conquering the lands without chaos invasion, lore aside. But it probably boils down to me not grasping the details in the game mechanics, especially on campaign map. I don't know, perhaps I'll check out some streamers who play the campaigns and see what they're doing differently than me.

It's about doing shit as fast as you can early on.
My first 6 turns of Empire are all planned out exactly.
1: defeat grunburg army, step back, recruit 3 swordsmen
2: take grunburg: recruit 3 swordsmen or 2 FCM and 1 swordsman
3: march to Helmgart, recruit 2 crossbows and a swordsman
4: take Helmgart and recruit whatever gets me 2 FCM, 5 crossbows and the rest starting units and swordsmen
5: take Elihart
6: Hope like hell there's a Marineburg army outside so I don't have to fight a siege battle. Then fight one of the toughest battles all campaign.
After that I take Middleland and work on breaking treaties with Wissenland and confederate Talabecland. Nordland jumps in with Middleland so there's 2 more provinces.
Oh yeah, before that I'll take Wasteland. Gotta be fast Leon is a dick recently with Marineburg and whatever the other town's name is.
I had to restart a shitload because he sieges Marineburg at the end of turn 3 like 90% of the time. Also I was playing Gelt and his starting units suck. Mortar doesn't help much at first but it does let you auto-battle sieges right away. Outriders are awful. If I had reiksguard it would be easier but Franz's campaign bonuses are shit.

After that you deal with what you have to.

Growth is key. Level 2 farms are cheap so I got them in every city first. Also warrior priests are worth like 2 farms.

How do you guys afford to build up both economy and field decent armies early to mid game? Sacking towns? I pretty much always occupy and then spend craploads on building the towns up. Pretty much never raid (as non-horde factions).

There is no actual pikemen. The things closest like halberdiers do do a lot of damage against armor and large, but they don't actually stop cunts from getting through you.

For that reason as well as missiles being obstruced in close ranks means you cannot properly tercio. To answer your question.

You can upsize it to some massive box formation with missiles inside it but that still has some obstruction issues and is generally just the stuntie tactic so that their gunline doesn't get rammed in the ass.

I actually was! Had to rewrite the whole post because what I wrote was actually late game army. With mortis engine and and blood knights. I probably screwed up with buildings in the starting province, it was a mix of recruitment buldings and income, which gave me neither. Reflected quickly and made it an income province, with the one to the west (Drakenhof capital I think, or was it the other-hof, can't recall) a recruitment hub. Anyway, after playing dwarves, VC economy is really hard to deal.

It's better to make do with what you have rather than wait for recruitment buildings.
Just use the raise dead function and spam what you have as you go. Only build recruitment buildings if you don't have economic buildings to build that turn and you have a decent amount of money.

Don't build say, barracks level 3 for empire to get greatswords if you won't have the armory until later. Build them simultaneously.

Necromancers deployment helps building costs a bit I think.

It can work, it's just not that good.

Issue with missile units is that they're balanced so that it takes two or sometimes 2.5 missile units firing at a unit in range to route them before melee.
Going off the more generous 2, this means that in a hypothetically ideal scenario, twelve handgunners will rout six units before melee. This leaves your six melee in combat with potentially twelve enemy units. And those that routed will probably return. This generally means that you're fucked, especially when you consider obstruction, faster units, stalk and the need to have some of your infantry on the flanks.

You can go missile heavy but typically never missile majority except if the map allows it.

Only reason to ask that question is if you think you can manage the ones without shields because they're cheaper for some shit army purposes. But you never need to save that much money.
If it's really a problem then get your battle wizard to get the prime mover ability and have him do that to save money instead.
Seriously don't underestimate that. Best if you level him up some first, that way he may get the trait bonuses faster. Mine was deployed for at least half of 100 turns and only got to level 5 and got an extra 5% off building upgrades.
HOWEVER he did save me tens of thousands of gold. Way more than what he cost to have around doing nothing.

As I said it's always been a problem in the franchise.
Player control can win against horrific odds or win equal battles with far fewer casualties, but autoresolve will always do the best when the bar is that much in your favor.

What you do it up to you. Legendary difficulty means you can't autoresolve and is the "hard" campaign.
I often autoresolve sieges except in Attila and Shogun 2 because I find they play like shit.

It's hard to pass up a free siege win though. Also I get a lot of enjoyment out of the campaign itself. I like building up my settlements and making enough money to field my super army, then I'll usually fight. I almost always fight siege defenses though. Those are fun (because it's easy since I'm behind a wall).

Also CA doesn't really know how to balance towers so tower arrows will almost always kill a unit. They're pretty dangerous.

Maybe you can get super good at fighting siege battles and make a guide for idiots some day though!

Attacking Norsca is usually entertaining as the Brets. Sending forces to the badlands to go run down orcs is more time-consuming and you have to move over more unfriendly ground.

It's also generally better strategy because the orcs aren't as big of a threat as the Norscans and stay the dwarves bitches for most campaigns.

In my last Bret game I sent up this one big dick army To keep the brutes scurrying for their hovels.

The general, who's name was Bernhard or Bartholomew or something, ended being given the sobriquet "the Wolf" by the game after crusading in the hostile frozen wastes and burning down half the settlements for 30 odd turns.

This might sound unspectacular, but only one of the modern titles, Empire TW, is not that good. And even there you will have some fun if the time period is your thing. Even Rome 2 is a decent game now with all of the patches and the Emperor edition. The only reason why steam reviews are constantly low are the DLC prices.

That's good too. It depends on how defensive or offensive you want to be.

Generally I find empire plays better aggressively, which means pushing up swordsmen to halt enemy movements, and then reinforcing around their flanks with artillery, missiles, and cav. I prefer to keep my halbreds/spears back to reinforce or dispatch for specific use cases (monsters/cav).

Swordsmen typically last longer than halbrediers in melees with other infantry, but halbrediers can be used to shut down charges.

So whether or not you want to go on the defense or offense you can switch them out.

It's probably because the features aren't there yet.

From Medieval 3 people would expect:

>crusades and papacy mechanics
>mongol invasions
>extensive dynastic management
>discovery of americas
>different eras with wildy differing technologies and units

Too much to develop for just one game.

I believe that they made Attila to lay the foundation for M3. Horde mechanics, deeper family management, tech trees and more were all from the Rome2/Attila era and really fit into a M3 game.

That's what I fucking said. Manual battles allow you to triumph where autoresolve says that you're fucked.

However when you completely outnumber the enemy and can't possibly lose, autoresolve often does magic and you lose far less men, sieges are the basic example as you can't win certain maps without taking at least a hundred casualties from towers. But autoresolve might give you five casualties.

Other than a few moments in it's in-game history books I don't think there's really enough war to have a TW game made from. It's all just small isolated wars save for some shit like to Altmer getting uppity or the Oblivion Crisis. It's more Witcher/GoT that's truly awful as an idea. Especially GoT.

Vampire counts have zombies and skeletons as fodder. They aren't meant to kill, they're meant to swarm the enemy and overwhelm them in numbers (similar to orcs) They use their monsters to do most of the damage.

Greenskins have most of their army being numerous but pretty weak. Big uns are your damage dealers, along with black orcs and heroes. Cavalry works well too, if you know how to use them.
