I think I'm finally done with this for this section of the world map. Who knew getting the player to always face downwards when standing on specific points on a map would require so much time and effort?

So yeah, time to ask around again.
Does anyone have a download link to the three Japanese Character Generator Expansion Packs for MV as well as the recently released FSM: Woods and Cave tileset?

Wasn't the guy asking about "equipment only, no level ups", but I'm considering doing the same.

It's easier to gate the player's level by the amount of content they've unlocked.

With level ups, you have no idea how much they'll farm for sure.
>>
So I'm using advanced classes and the DPS caster path of the Druid is a Stormcaller. Any ideas for the advanced healer path?

I was thinking either Oracle, Seer, or Shaman.

Newbie here. Been tinkering with RPG Maker MV for the better part of a week now. Just wanted to ask if there are any downsides to not having a traditional JRPG overworld map? I was wanting to make my game more like Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga in terms of map design.

>>
>>180949798
By starting with the meat and potatoes of your game, the gameplay, your mechanics and battle system and all that. It usually takes a lot of time, experimentation and hard work to put together. Then again, if you have a story you're 100% sure you will not make changes to later down the line then I suppose it doesn't hurt to make a prototype intro already.

Gameplay wise not really, I feel like these days 99% of "unique" gameplay concepts for these old school RPGs just feel like gimmicks.
The game I'm doing will mostly focus on player choice, giving them lots of choices and having the choices have realistic and noticeable effects
>>
I asked this in another thread but I want to ask here,

What is a comfy game to you? What would you consider being a 'comfy' game? Can a simulator be comfy? Though maybe an rpg can't be 'comfy'.

I found Harvest Moon fun but that's not really an rpg, Golden Sun Lost Age was good too.

I haven't played Rune Factory games but I plan to for my research.
>>
>>180951372
A comfy game for me is a slow paced game in which you can take your time and do what you want. Animal crossing is in my opinion #1 comfy game ever made. As for rpgs, I think of games like Underrail when I think comfy.

also,
>can a simulator be comfy
Nigga, have you never played euro truck simulator?

Okay so I just beat the first boss and apparently finished the demo.

To start off, I abused the fact that the dialogue option "Did I say I would help you" loops you back to the beginning of the dialogue enabling you to keep getting 300 gold over and over again. I don't really play these kinds of rpgs, so the extra 50 medicine I could afford was nice to have lol.

I initially picked the third option which gives you a fight with a knight dude which you cannot win and I wondered what the fuck was going on, but then I realized that's to show what will happen if you don't go on the quest. I liked that.

It says "You tried to run away.." even when I succeed at running away, which is a bit weird.

The music is nice and your mapping is comfy enough. Story and world seem extremely generic so far, but I've only played for a bit.
I find it weird that firebombs do jack all damage when used by my medic, it seems to me an item like that should do a set amount of damage regardless of who throws it but that may just be me. The music is nice.

Overall I rate this not bad, maybe even decent/10. And like I said I'm not even that into this genre.
>>
>>180964469
>To start off, I abused the fact that the dialogue option "Did I say I would help you" loops you back to the beginning of the dialogue enabling you to keep getting 300 gold over and over again
That's totally an error and I gotta fix that.

>It says "You tried to run away.." even when I succeed at running away, which is a bit weird.
Would "You attempted to escape" work better?

>Story and world seem extremely generic so far, but I've only played for a bit.
I have some ideas that ramp things up a bit but yeah it starts out pretty basic.

>Firebombs
I kinda created that late at night when I was tired and just copypasted the formula I use for magic. You're right though it should be static and not based on stats at all. I've already fixed that up.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll use it to polish it up.
>>
>>180965231
I mean that when I fail at running away, "you tried" makes sense, but when I actually do run away it should say "Got away safely!" or something like in pokemon.

Keep at it though my man, I didn't get bored playing for an hour so I think you've got a good game in the making here.

>Knight Class has roughly 20 skills
>Black Mage Class has almost 33 skills

>>
>>180970079
If the knight has a normal attack worth using while the mage is entirely based around abilities, the knight doesn't need as many skills.
>>
>>180970079
That's quite a few skills for both of them.

>>
>>180970079

>>
>>180971071
I dunno. Separating the skills that target all allies/enemies from the skills that target one ally/enemy doubles the number of skills available overall.
>>
>>180971238
Do I do it for the DLC? Because the game works fine, I got the update fine, but I thinl its how the game uses the eshop for dlc
>>
>>180975072
Yes all you have to do is enable the game patcher

https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Options-and-usage

It worked for mine, should work for yours too.
>>
>>180972250
But how do you make the "All Enemy" skills distinguishable and useful?

Like, Mages have selective elemental attributes.
Knights have restrictive elemental attributes - based on their weapon.

Mages have large MP pools.
Knights have little - if any.

You don't want to equalize classes, because what's the point of separating them if they're not going to be different? You might as well call Knights "Physical Mages" if that's the only attribute that set them apart. You know what I'm saying?

It's a kind of bloat. Like forcing the player to buy 2 sets of armor that are essentially the same thing, just worn by different genders or races. What's the point? They do the same thing.

So after a very long time of not doing rpgm anything, I ended up learning some real javascript stuff accidentally. How scanning works in the local and global scopes, little stuff like that. I've always been a "learn the bare minimum to makes things work" kinda guy, so it was neat learning how stuff is meant to work.

One thing that stood out is the "var" initialization. I've always left it out of my script calls and told others to do the same because I was lazy and it didn't cause problems. Realizing now how local scopes work (and being yelled at for "strict mode" problems), I decided to try using var in a script call instead of just my .js plugins - and it totally doesn't fucking work.

I realize why it doesn't, but I'm kind of surprised how convenient my old lazy method worked out. For the curious, the script call is its own local scope (and not the event page), so using var is declaring a local variable, which is deleted when the script call itself ends. By not using var, the computer defaults to creating it as a global variable instead, which can be read by anything. You must use the local variable within the script call box to use it at all.

Anyways, more importantly, today's Song of the Day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKrOH0sQV6w
>>
>>180983592
I missed the song of the day very much.
>>
>>180976107
Knights can apply protective buffs or enter offensive stances. They can resist stuns and do multi-hit to get past barriers.

Mages can enter speed stances or power stances, but both make them easier to kill. They have access to wide area attacks and multi-element spells.

My sprites glitch through my overlays...but maybe not exactly.
I tried to take a screenshot but whats happening is the sprite is becoming visible and then its switching back to the overlay, so i cant get a snapshot of what it looks like.

Kaus overlay does this.
Orange overlay does this (which is essentially the same as kaus over, this faggot took over for kaus since kaus faggot was banned for art theft)

The conflict i KNOW is being caused by alpha ABS, because if i turn it off, I dont have this problem.

So, does anyone know a fix for this?
Is there any other overlay pluggins i can try?

If you're going to make that the attack, make a strike animation happen on the enemy, push them back farther, and make them slow down instead of coming to an abrupt stop.

If possible, you don't need all of this to complete before the next action happens.
>>
>>181031697
Thanks for the advice! Yeah just finish the battler attack animation the slash effect looks really weird
>>
>>181031885
I also want to do something about the Player moving forward and THEN striking. The motion is too lifeless. A step-in or no movement at all would be better.

But I'm fairly certain that's a default part of the plugin you're using, so a bit harder to modify.
>>
How are you guys planning on making your gameplay fun? Surely you're not going to have the player just walk around on paths opening chests, activating switches, and getting into random battles?

I'd say 90% of people use events exclusively for stuff. The javascript plugins mostly just add to the events and stuff. You don't have to use any javascript to make a game.

I can't tell if you're being ironic or not. Your writing sounds like that of a non-native speaker, but god, that mapping is terrible, too.

If you're serious, I would take a look at other games' maps to figure out how to flesh them out with more depth rather than just slapping things down randomly, and I would also suggest you write in your native language until you have a better grasp of English.

How difficult is to publish a game in Steam? a friend mentioned that MV included the publishing license and thus you didn´t have to go through the normal greenlight/steam direct method.
>>
>>181052995
As easy as paying the 100 bucks or however much it is for the steam direct fee I guess. From what I understand it's never been easier to get on steam than it is right now.
>>
>>181053215
Hahaha I hadn't even noticed that. Last thing I heard people were getting all bent out of shape thinking it'd be like 5000! This seems far more reasonable.
>>
>>181053609
Yeah I'm really happy about how you no longer need to worry about pleasing steams community to get on the store. Steam checks your game themselves now and they basically just take the money you give them, check that your forms are filled out properly, run your exe once to see if it works and then you're on steam. The fee is not bad at all for being on the biggest storefront for games on the planet.

Different Anon here.
But it's flat. Not that things can never be flat. It's just boring.
Everything is spaced out in a kind of unnatural evenness, nothing overlaps.

My advice with wild vegetation is to cluster it around tree and on tall grass. Short grass should be bare, surrounding dirt and rocky patches were nothing grows.
It's not used in this example either, but there is an overlapping tree tile, that really should be used. And if you're desperate for another layer, you can use event graphics.

I don't think MV is suited for online play at all, with the amount of work you would have to do you are far better off using a different engine.
>>
>>181058846

Make it a Dystopian Flintstones setting. Call it Stonepunk. The characters struggle with the ecological destruction caused by using prehistoric animals as appliances.
>>
>>181058997
Not the other guy. Technically you can do it, but the engine isn't built with that in mind, and you will probably need to use SQL or something like that.

I would suggest you give the player the option of meeting and maybe battling previous save files in NG++. That would encourage some friends to share their save files and would enable what you want. To some extent.
>>
>>181059893
it would work better with certain animals going extinct, grinding industries to a halt. Brontosaurus cranes dying out, meaning no more heavy lifting, mammoths dying out so farms can't be watered anymore. Invasive rabbid things coming in and harming food stores.

In my game, one sidequest can be started by finding a hidden chest in the first town. If the player does the sidequest during the prologue which is the earliest point in the game that it can be done, they will get a new party member right away, while if they do the sidequest after the prologue there will be extra steps available later in the game before the player gets the party member.

Is there anything wrong with this? I know one Touhou fangame, Genius of Sappheiros, does something similar.

I played the build that you uploaded first and I like that there are so many things you can interact with and also things like the flower in the grass outside the ruins being an encounter, but there are problems like the encounters with slime sprites don't disappear after battle and it would benefit the game if the party was fully-healed after battle. Also ghosts can spam intangibility on themselves and the very frequent status effects that lock down your party members makes battles feel like a slog.

Thanks. That's an issue I think I can fix. There's probably way too many status effects that prevent movement and take away control without enough ways to prevent and cure them. I'd hoped the item drops would be enough to cure them but alas. Just gotta make battles less of a chore, got it.

>Also I didn't finish the demo the first time

Good thing, too, since it got horribly broken after that. Blessing of Aelion on Wren using Make It Rain shredded things on my playtests.

I did it! First time I played I kinda ignored Blessing of Aelion. And I'm glad the bed works in the second build, but imo it would be better to give the party a full heal after each battle if free healing is already so easy to get. But other than those things, it's a very nice practice demo! Especially since there's a pretty interesting story. Only complaint is status effects are way too common, especially confusion and confusion-like effects, as well as the melancholy effect that seems to have a 100% success chance.

I like to consolidate the most useful stuff around one area, at least being on the same map screen if the town happens to be that big. At the same time, that area would be relatively close to the entrance for easy access. That assumes the town is some kind of hub or relaxation area where players can rest and restock, which is usually a safe assumption. Optional lore/immersion stuff and NPC houses that exist for completeness or hints/foreshadowing can be more spread out and go wherever.

Yet, correct me if I'm wrong, local variables were never an option for how I was using them. There are places I could have used local variables, like the common $n (maybe. Likely not since it was usually getEventId shoved into there and used through long events), but everything else needed to continue and be referenced outside of the local scope.

I've never pretended to be a programmer. I just needed to do things that went beyond the capability of regular eventing and did them.

VX Ace problem here. Basically I fucking hate mapping in this godforsaken engine.
The way the engine counts what's ocean is pissing me off and forcing me to do away with the more natural coastlines. Basically anything that's not straight I can't land on.
Obviously I don't want to do that.
So I thought I'd do something in the vein of FF1 where you can only anchor at ports. But I'm drawing a blank as to how I can prevent landing on the currently landable tiles as I can't adjust the 4 directional passage of autotiles.
Am I just gonna have to nut up and overwrite every single land autotile with a top layer tile? That honestly sounds like hell.

>>
>>181181819
Starting simple is generally the recommendation, yes.

Just pick any typical kind of fantasy story, like... You are a knight. A dragon has kidnapped the princess (or prince, we won't judge). The dragon makes its lair on the mountain past the great forest. Castle with surrounding city -> Forest dungeon -> Small forest village -> Mountain dungeon -> Dragon boss fight.

have at least another adventurer/archaeologist/miner, remains of people who were killed, items in those remains instead of chests, a secret area that needs a simple puzzle/riddle to solve, the environment changing as you go deeper, glowing crystals/goo, steam, broken status that tells a story, tents and monster lairs... anything that doesn't make it feel just empty.

I'm watching youtube videos on game design atm.

A lot of it is stuff I've been hearing over a decade. And I'm fairly convinced when these reviewers talk about RPGs they've only played MMOs and Action games. Their tastes are limited to caffeine and surgery energy drinks.
Like, they can't appreciate tea or water. Mellowing out. Going slow. Bitter isn't always bad.

I agree that the point of a game is to entertain. So being bored is a bad thing. But IMO, they're bored because they whittle everything down to rewards. Like, they complain about not being immersed. But they never will be because they look at NPCs and Quest givers as tools. They're so anti-social, like, nothing and nobody is worth their time unless they walk away with something.

Some guy that claims to work for EA.
He think's rpgs are narratives. Like, if it doesn't have a narrative, it's not an rpg.
But's he's wrong. I mean having a narrative makes it a better rpg, sure. But narrative isn't gameplay. The camera angle isn't gameplay.
CYOA books and Visual Novels aren't games, their a separate medium.
His "formula" for rpgs is mixture of non-rpg mechanics (to maximize the audience) and put under a narrative.

>They never will be (immersed) because they look at NPCs and Quest givers as tools

I've been replaying Lunar, and its so cool to have a party of wide-eyed kids, that gets treated like wide-eyed kids, and most NPCs like to talk about their lives or the city the kids are going to next.

"Heading to Meribia? Check out Black Rose Street. It has all the cute girls!"

"Meribia's Black Rose Street is no place for children. It's where all the scary magic-users hang out. You wouldn't want to get turned into a toad!"

"Black Rose Street? Lotta magic students from Vane go there when they get sick of livin' on a floating rock."

With MMOs and modern WRPGs, the idea of who the main character 'is' and what they're up to becomes so nebulous that it's almost impossible to write for. Almost. They need to keep trying, dammit.

Yes. And I said it back when you first started that you guys were more suited for the JRPG general than RPGM. But the JRPG general isn't around anymore.

Does anyone know if there is a VX Ace Script that gives you a (somewhat enhanced) Dragon Quest style inventory?

For those of you who have not played DQ, the way that it works in most DQ games is that each party member has their own inventory and they can only use equipment and items that you equip to them outside of combat. Typically in DQ games, each party member can hold up to 12 items (non-stackable), and everything else goes into a "bag", which is your main inventory.

I want to do something like that. Though I want to be able to either have an expanded limit on how many items each character can hold (like maybe 16) or make it that you can hold up to say 9 of consumable items in a given inventory slot, with fewer slots.

Are there any scripts that will let me do something like this?

Here's a proof-of-concept sort of thing I made couple months ago. I'm preparing to work on it again and actually possibly complete it within the next century. There's not much "gameplay" (or much of anything for that matter) yet but I'm posting it anyway to hear some opinions. Keep in mind I plan to improve the character sprites down the line, even though I'm not too artistically gifted. I'm more of a music guy usually. Basically what I want this game to be is a cute adventure game sort of thing with puzzles. I considered making it an RPG, but then decided not to because I liked an idea of an adventure game more. That's about it.

>>181338505
If you want my opinion, I can see the potential in these mugshots you posted. I don't know what kind of thing you're actually making, but what I did myself (and keep in mind I'm terrible at art) is I tried applying different proportions to my characters/switch colors (even if temporarily) or even just change some features couple of times on a character and then compare what works best (extend the jaw or make eyes bigger or smaller). I would show some examples, but all my temp stuff for my game went poof with old PC.

>>181338237
The biggest issue I see is you should change the way you're approaching line drawing. Right now, it's as though you HAVE to have every line drawn as though they're connected in the four cardinal directions. This makes things feel overly blocky.

You have a few options available to you:
1. Increase the thickness of the lines. This still allows for sloppier drawing, but gives you more room to draw more natural curves.

2. Reduce the thickness of lines to always being 1-pixel, unless there's a situation where lines meet other lines. Like perhaps here where the iris touches the bottom of the eyeball.

3. Similar to 2, but drawn at half size. This lets you stick to more pixelated, lofi drawing. Less of a burden, I guess, though it has its own type of difficulty to it.
>>
File: curves.png (12KB, 137x58px) Image search: [Google]
curves.png
12KB, 137x58px
>>181339779
For a general practice thing, you want to make sure your curves have the right "curvature" to them.

The main thing I noticed was the bottom of the neck where it attaches to the torso, abruptly changing from vertical to horizontal. Since its an organic body part, you want it to still have some curve to it. Makes it feel more lifelike.
>>
File: eyes.png (21KB, 403x72px) Image search: [Google]
eyes.png
21KB, 403x72px
>>181340608
And for something that's actually specifically related to your drawing,

1. Unless your character's meant to be.. eccentric/on edge/wide eyed, you should make the eyelid more noticeable. It doesn't necessarily have to be colored entirely black or anything, but eyes are generally partially covered by the upper lids.

2. More of just a consideration you might want. Perhaps you'd want to add the specular shine to the eye. It'll make the eyes feel a bit less flat/lifeless.

>>
>>180938228
One thing I've tried to do in my games is limit farming by having no "random" encounters, but enemies that you can see on the map and bump into to engage then delete themselves after the battle is over so you can't farm them. This way they can grind everything they see, but they're still gated by how much progression they can make. Though it requires a bit of balancing because that also means it's possible to skip a lot of encounters you see by running past it and not being strong enough to get past certain forced encounters, so I try to have them seek out the player if the player gets within say, a 10-15 tile radius of them.

In whatever whatever image editor you use, you can use indexing. In Gimp(it's free and it works super well) you can index your images to make them eliminate any unused bytes. If you have a color pallete for your sprites, you can use that and it will make your file sizes way smaller.

The biggest thing for me is skill-based gameplay, which is largely undoable if you're using default RM stuff.

So for something not so impossible, I just really like crafting systems. Especially when you can readily find out where to obtain the required materials. Creature Hunter's really fun.

like if i would be, it'd just be generic stuff like "draw guiding lines so that your proportions are decent" or whatever.

To add on to this anon's point, I love crafting systems where each component of the final item has its own individual use. I dislike finding items that have no purpose other than as crafting fodder, but even something as simple as a minor heal would be enough to alleviate the disappointment of getting "nothing that might be something eventually" as a reward.

Further, giving the McGuffins some kind of gameplay use. Progressing the story is one thing, but not getting to use the supposedly uber powerful collectibles feels like a let down sometimes. If the item doesn't matter outside of being a plot coupon, it doesn't feel important and could be anything. Giving any other use would make it a more active part of the world and prevent it from being replaced by a ticket with the word "plot" written on it.

The default actor for the PS1 version is invisible. Its name is 'New Chara' and is only available at the start of a game before you add any other party members. Once you add a party member, New Chara dissappears and cannot be added back into the party by any means.

I'm not really sure exactly what you're looking for. I mean a comment is just that: a comment. It's not meant to be an entire insight into the philosophy of the code and the extraordinary circumstances leading up to that moment. It's just as simple as explaining what a function does or describing the sequence of a code as you read it.

e.g
>This is where the MC starts sidequest
>If player chooses X then Event Y will trigger

Basically you want your comments to be able to explain your code to other people or even yourself years into the future if you go back and look at it. Comments have no impact on the program itself, it's only there to help you remember and organize.

Some people might not know how to organize. It has little to do with game design, but a lot to do with the creation process. Not everyone knows how to organize a project right off the bat, especially if it's their first. So a few tips on how to comment or a guideline to which things are worth commenting on might be helpful.

Well I suppose that is true. I'm not sure if it's something that can be explained in a book completely. The advice I can give is that if you feel like you should comment it, go for it. Remember, comments are not necessary. You could code an entire game or program with not comments in it.

What is interesting about commenting? Not trying to be mean but I think organization would be better done with a design document. Of course inside the code commenting would be useful for the reasons I've already mentioned.

It's my masterwork passion project and therefore far too ambitious for my current level of skill, so I'm breaking it up into several different practice games that each focus on a different part of the planned mechanics.

I recently got a story demo out of the way that helped cement characterization and slight worldbuilding. Next up will probably be learning about battle mechanics.

The tiles that share grass and sand are too flat. Having the grass/sand be just one color is pretty noticeable. Either turning down the detail on your regular grass/sand tiles or sprucing up the overlapping tiles would make it look more consistent

If you end up getting all your spriting done first because it's more fun, you're just gonna end up with one long slog of database work left afterwards, so you should swap between the two.
Maybe do an hour of one, then an hour of another. Or if you're working on things like monsters, characters, or items in the database, only sprite them after you've finished all their stuff in the database. Just find a way to mix things up every now and then.

Is there any better nonstandard encrypter for VX and other RPG Maker games?
I have a problem. I make tiny, shitty games with some friends, we exchange them and then try to win them, usually - a kinda friendly competition. But I worry that at least one of them is cheating by decrypting rgssad or whatever encrypted data files as well as graphics. Obviously the guy claims innocence and I wouldn't want to kick him out from our fun without any proof.
So, is there any additional security I can put my crap under so it won't be easily cracked open by some ready-use decrypter? I confess that I also could use one if I'll ever finish my commercial, 100% custom assets game.

The shield isn't big, the person is just small.
Shota isn't a type of shield, but a Japanese loan word for a boy, correcting the word use of "her" - they're just being a weeb and failed to communicate the changing subject "it"

>>181479561
Tank is an mmo term. A role that absorbs damage from the party. Meaning they have high defense or HP, with low...everything else.
But they're practically non-existent in turn-base rpgs for a good reason. When everyone is in rows and enemies attack at random, the likely-hood of taking a single hit diminishes with more party members. And if given the ability to manipulate enemy targets, it potentially breaks the game, creating balancing issues that make the strategic use of a tank - not strategic at all, but a kind of tedium that might as well be automatic.

>>
>>181502403
Not that anon but I don't believe you can unless a message command allows for flash and shake or maybe even a switch change.

Though what I know you can do for sure is:

Play text 1/2 normally,
close it and have flash and shake happen,
Play text 1/2 again but have that part display instantly,
then part 2/2 is placed after that part and runs normally.

It's not exactly what you said, but I think it's pretty close to what you might want.

Corrected post:

Alright, I'll take the plunge. Be gentle with me.
Spess gaem public demo for /rpgmg/ (prologue complete)
http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=56299321954092634990

Prologue finished, cutscenes done. Some custom graphics cobbled together or edited from originals despite me not being an artist - be warned. Some custom sounds as well. A few minutes of playing so far, a dozen if you also will look for all the secrets, hidden shit. There are two sidequests but both may be avoided/messed up - one due to randomization of loot and one due to player dialogue choices.

All in all, I think that for a hack who just started making something to exchange with an acquaintance (he makes or was making his own game) I didn't do too poorly, especially since it's my first project I'll share publicly ever.

Bugs possible, bugreports, general feedback and impressions regarding story and gameplay welcome. Worst case scenario if it's crap, let me down fairly and I won't bother /rpgmg/ with another version (once/if I'll ever make it - probably one once I'll agree upon battle mechanics, add some more station locations including safe spots and present basics of script-less crafting and survival mechanics for more open-world gameplay so don't hold your breath just yet).
>>
>>181504897
The first two are easy. First one can be done with just some wait or by event running not as a parallel - so the way most events work blocking character movement. Second is just an event command, at least in VXAce.

The message thing I am unsure of. I use multiple parallel processes in my game when different things happen in different parts of the map at once, but I didn't do so in regards to text.
>>
>>181481719
I like the idea but the comic is kinda shit - going very cliche routes for very cliche, boring results. It's good for a starter if one makes a generic jrpg but it simply doesn't work if you want anything more ambitious.
>>
>>181511553
Pretty much.
This comic focuses too much on the technical aspect instead of asking "what could I do to make the story or character interesting?"
>>

The recent character making comic did go into story aspect much more than technicalities and it was horrible - suggesting one how to make characters using archetypes, have them be defined and oppossites of a BBEG etc and ultimately being a guide on how one should make cliche, carbon copy blob characters with little to no originality.

Every once in a while this obsession with Elementals takes over me.
I want to include other forces of nature besides the 4 classical elements.
Like Lightning, Darkness ect...

But then I get hung up on trying to balance them in my mind. Arrange them in a wheel.
Like, maybe there should be male fire spirits. But made of lava instead? Or would it be more practical to make them dragons?
Lava is a subcatagory mix of Earth. But so is Mud and Sand.
Like you get these combinations of the 4 classical elements, but add light and dark and the combinations are just - idk,
Combine Light and Dark and get Void.
Earth with Light & Dark might scion Crystal & Metal,
But what do you do with wind? Miasma and...idk, Ozone?
Fire? A black hole? 'Cause when stars collapse...Gravity? Radiation? It's just not that logical.

I can get dangerously hyperfocused on rpg maker. Story writing and coding turn into this long term problem solving session that consumes my thoughts.
Go to sleep thinking about it. Waking up thinking about it. And before I know it, I've neglected everything else in my life. Forget to charge my phone, and realize it's been dead all weekend. A week goes by without me checking my email.
Months go by and my DVR is full of shows I haven't watched.
I've got games from 2 summer steam sales ago that haven't played yet.

Have themes that will interest people, hinting at exciting developments without outright telling which thing it really is (till it actually happens). Create relatable characters (not necessarily likeable, just ones one can have feelings about). don't handwave shit, don't force player to go through every little detail, leave some space for nonlinearity and ability to go about certain things the way player wants, with space for that player to make their own conclusions.
IMHO, bit part of any good story is its ability to interest the reader of what the whole story really is.
>>
>>181614832
>Pic related. The windows are either on the edge, or in the middle making a door placement impossible.
Looks like shitty tilesets to me. Is it default one or something you've downloaded somewhere? If the latter, it likely needs some adjustment or is poorly converted from tileset for a different version.
>>
>>181604523
>>181609096
It'd be great if we'd get general feature-by-feature comparison of all RPG Makers, preferably with screens. Is there an anon veteran enough in different versions and who has them to be able to make sure? I've only worked on about three version, and two of them were 2000 and some win 98 one.
>>
>>181614832
Each "square" that a map is made up of is called a tile. A tileset is a collection of tiles - your overworld or town, etc, graphics. ("Chip" and "chipset" have also been used.)

I think what anon was saying was that if you're going to use the default resources, you should still edit them to make the placement of windows (and apparently also beds) easier to work with.
>>
>>181615474
>Is it default one or something you've downloaded somewhere?
It's the default tileset. Basically this is my first game eva.
>>181615598
>you should still edit them
How do I do that? I mean what's the easiest way to do that, considering you probably can do it in paint.
>>
>>181615853
Open the resource manager (or whatever it's called in your version, it should be located near the icon for the database). Select the tileset you want to edit, then export. Edit the exported file, then use the import option to get it into the game. Then go into chipsets in the database and change them to your edited ones. Use whatever editing program you're comfortable with.

It always depends on how it's written.

RE:Zero's protagonist goes back to a certain point in time whenever he dies, and maybe you'd think he'd eventually become unstoppable. Unfortunately dying so many times starts to get to him after so many repetitions, deaths, and absolutely impossible situations.

No Game No Life featured two nigh unbeatable main characters, but only because they work quite well together and cover each other's weaknesses. The brother is quite charismatic, an expert at planning, and is very good at goading or manipulating the opponent into doing what he wants. The sister is very logical, remembers minute details with amazing accuracy, and can solve complex calculations by writing with a stick in the sand. Individually, they are very good, but have lost numerous times to others. However, together, they have never lost a game.

>>181627097
I believe it's because it's such a strangely specific power trip fantasy.

-Reincarnation is common enough and but currently it's more like "otaku dies and becomes hero in his next life" which is dumb.

-Harem by itself already sets up red flags.

-OP Cheat is very VERY bad writing unless it's written well or there's a significant and believable drawback.
