I'm wondering if I should make this a town proper or cut off everything but the protagonists' houses and have it be a stand alone, like they live on top of a hill or something.

Everything but the river and the top left of the map is basically left over from a stock map; so it's not really 'done' even part way by any means of the word.

Like slimes? I would think infiltration stuff, squeezing through tight spaces and minor shapeshifting. If particularly villainous they might possible people from the inside. Acid, poison, and being able to consume anything that fits inside them are par for the course, as are splitting abilities.

They could specialize in screwing with or operating machinery like space gremlins that fit anywhere. Shove themselves into capsules and throw each other like grenades to envelop someone or cover a room in slimy jerkass. Might be gun experts capable of pulling a trigger with any part of their body.

There's no winning that one. Unless you give the player the option to choose, and even then, giving more development to tne girl, if not outright guilt tripping the player into choosing your favourite girl, like in DQ5 is going to enrage a big part of your fanbase.

No matter what you do, prepare for backlash. Just remember, the more you develop a character, the more their glaring faults are visible. That's why /a/ never likes the main girl and usually go for the obscure side character, then get angry when she loses.

Started mapping out my town today.
The whole game takes place in this one town and one dungeon attached to it, so this grab is only a fraction of how the big the town will eventually be.

(ignore the weird errors going on here, it's because I'm using the tile size change plugin which causes the editor to look weird. It looks fine in game though!)

What sort of things do you guys wanna see in an RPG town? So far I've planned out stuff like shops, inns, town hall, guard outpost, a casino, a strip joint, but I'm open to more ideas for things to see and do in the town!

I outline my story with bulletin points just to remind me where I'm going with it.

I have written out paragraphs before, like you have. But I found I rarely stick to it.
Stuff like facial expressions and emotions can be a bit presumptuous. Either I'm using portraits in every scene, or none. It can be bad to have it just one scene used unique artwork because it can make the characters in it seem more important than the story needs them to be.

And then there are sentences that are easier said then done that might require a lot of setup and a passage of time you don't think about on paper. The flow of events progressing differently from the rest of the game.
For example your first 3 chapters take place in within a short time frame. But chapter 4 has Cecel in a quandary. Applying for a job. looking around, failing to find anything, having a revelation, coming back to be disappointed, and then lucking out again. It's a lot of ground to cover, with a whole lot of nothing happening in-between.

If they're not, that's fine. It just means these are just in-between level scenes that play-out in a minute or two.

But as >>180289435 pointed out there's a lot going on in Chapter 4. A lot to condense into one scene. But even if you segmented it out into exploration, it sounds uneventful for the player. Especially for a final chapter. There's some emotional impact in his hopeless try-fail cycle at the end. But this is RPG Maker - how are you actually going to express that? Sad music and emoji bubbles? And he is seemingly by himself, so I expect there would a lot of introspection to communicate his emotions to the player.

Good question. The game is split up between a "human world" and a "monster world" - the parts I wrote out were for the human world. Segments in both parts are playable and share the same Gameplay structure, which is akin to Mother 3. The primary difference is, of course, the battles - in the human world you will mostly face unsavory humans, and the monster world is where you'll run into monster encounters.

The reason what I wrote seems uneventful "for a final chapter" is because it's not really the final chapter - human world segments basically take up a little less than a half of each chapter, the monster world segments being where the true meat of the chapter plays out. Plus it's not the chapter where you face the final boss - that entire chapter takes place in the monster world. You'll notice it never actually says "final chapter", just "final mirror."

In a small community of people, yes. It will be pretty cool to people who don't know RPG Maker and it will probably appeal to people the same way Mario Maker did with making your own game. During the arena segment, Perrine says to Priel something like "Dad misses you..."

What's the max map size? PS1's was 64x64 tiles.

Also, PS1's 'maximum' file size wasn't set in stone: Your database stuff (Maps/items/characters/magic monsters) couldn't take up more than one full memory card (128 kb), but your event data could be as many memory cards as your player was willing to swap. Also, for those curious: Defeat the Darkness is about 80 maps. That's 4 towns, interiors for major buildings, the dungeons, a few test maps, and a few floors of the Tower. Just played a demo for Numina. A German game that - as far as I can tell - has been in development since 2011. Maybe even before that.
It's very polished. It's in both English and German language. There's a few places were it's not translated.
I made it to the... second chapter? After that point it's all in German, and I'm not sure how long the demo goes after that. I played for a good 4 hours straight to get to that point.

Imo, they're not putting their best foot forward to promote this. The screenshot aren't the best looking maps in the game, and you'd never know by looking at it that it's a Dark Fantasy.
They call it a "4th wall breaking RPG" which is off-putting to me because it immediately makes me think it's a non-serious self-aware meme game. But it didn't look like one, so I gave it a change.
"Breaking the 4th wall" isn't accurate. Shawn, the main character, hears your voice after falling into a temple. You still control and play as Shawn. But you're like his Guardian Spirit or something. He'll talk to you, ask your opinion on stuff and what you should do next. "You" are a spirit (fragment) of this hooded character you played as in the prologue that presumably died. However, you're free to name yourself and pick dialogue options like "I don't know what's going on" "This guy is suspicious, don't trust him." or just stay silent "..."
So there's no 4th wall breaking at all.

It's a little difficult to explain. Although it's very much implied that you are you, at home, and this is a game. The plot twist then, is that someone else from your dimension is using the same method as you to interact with the world, along with a walkthrough guide and hacks. Dubbed "Player 2", they hijack your in-game daughter character and...it's crazy, and really hard to summarize this game.

So the way I got my weapon upgrades is like this:

Wood sword: 3dmg
Rusty sword: 4dmg
Steel sword: 7dmg
Grass sword: 12dmg, wind element
Magma sword: 15dmg, fire element

Clear Sword: 27dmg, no element, but attacks twice

The scaling is actually alot different, with the clear sword actually doing around 50dmg per attack, can't check the stats now though.

Also swords are available to Adventurer class (which is able to use all weapons, but with stunted stat growth), and paladin, which will get another 8 more powerful swords

It depends on how the elements work. Do you throw a lot of enemies that resist element X around the time that sword pops up? Is it largely irrelevant? If the elemental swords are specialized tools, you'll probably want a "normal" one in there.

Either way "Clear Sword" seems pretty op compared to the rest, though I feel like the name leaves something to be desired. It's oddly plain for an ultimate weapon.

A real forest village wouldn't have any trees within 30 feet of the houses. This includes the castle. The risk of fire is too great. Your town should be built into a hill (with the castle on top) or instead of a castle have a 'city hall' in the center of that sort of flat terrain (making the 'heart' of the city hard to attack from any angle)

It's very flat. Kinda hodgepodge. Kinda nonsensical to have wells next to a source of running water.
Consider using fences. Cluster vegetation from dense to barren trampled paths.

The castle? Church? What is that even...? It's inside out. The walls and windows meant for an interior. I don't think I need to say anything beyond that.

Speaking of temples.
It's time for another adventure into how mess up MV tiles are.

As you can see Outside_A4 has a number of "Snow" versions for forests, castles, and fort wall tiles.
Right in the middle is the (Snow)Temple. But there is no regular Temple included in this set. The regular Temple walls are included in duplicate for both Dungeon and Interior. Which kinda makes you wonder if this Snow Temple was really suppose to be included with Outside set or not.

And for the record can I just say how SHIT the snow tiles in MV are. Literally they're just blinding white tiles. Really out did themselves.

Just check my version of VX ACE.
This arrangement of is similar. However, between the Desert Building and the Castle, is just "Snow Building". A unique stone wall meant for snow regions. It's not designated as a temple. And it looks nothing like the Temple Walls that Ace used in Dungeons and Interiors.

I'm thinking the MV tile artist was just cutting corners by rehashing what already existed. I've already point out MV autotiles that have no boarders, they're just a single tile copy&pasted around making it pointless. Dunno how that made it passed QA.

i'd do it through scripting. in the Window_Options's drawItem function. drawItem refers to drawing each of the seven items you have in that menu. you'll see some drawText calls. move over the text x coordinates an appropriate amount to make room for the icons, add drawIcon(iconindex, x, y), and then you're good.

-wizards and clerics now gain spells through leveling

I did something of an info dump at the end and cut to black with a gun shot, leaving off for the next person to explain what happened..

I didn't want to corner the next collaborator like "sorry but you HAVE to do a fire dungeon next".
But I suppose they might feel directionless. I know I had trouble deciding where to take the story next, and explain the why and how.

Maybe a multipart McGuffin Quest would have been more conducive for what we are doing? Less decision making that way. Fewer questions to answer.

Also, I'm trying to do a simple skill that would check the current stat of the user in battle for debug purposes. But I'm dumb. When I have the following in the skill's notes, everything seems to be ok:

Yeah, database clutter is annoying. Even when I tried to plan my thing from charts & excel to RPGM it's in chaos. I figured I'll make a working framework with basic usability (battle wise) and then port it to a clean, empty project. With the experience I'll get trying to figure out the know-how and some things done I think I'll be able to better gauge my needs regarding how to manage the database. I'll probably use the dirty version to experiment with new functions and if I'll make it work, I'll implement it in the proper project.
More work but I think it will pay off ultimately.

I don't know your exact problem, but when you're trying to fix a problem, and need to display information, use console.log() instead of the ingame message window. When you use ingame messages, they're forced to be converted into a string of text, and you lose useful information.

So many reasons. MV mindlessly rehashed VX ACE tiles. Down to the cluster fuck arrangement.

It's like, they were following the direction of someone who had little to no experience making rpgs.
Down sprites don't fit on beds. The enemies are too impractical to use in any general capacity.
The battlebacks weren't scaled to match the animated battlers. So it looks like the heroes were hit with a shrink ray, or they're inside a giant's house (Coincidentally, the RTP does have beanstalks and cloud tiles to support that)

There's a number of holes in the RTP. Faces and walking sprites for some characters , but missing corresponding graphics in another area.
The world map tiles suggest you can have a variety of regions. Pinetrees, Palmtrees, Dead trees. But they're severely limited to like, 1 tree. There's hardly anything to work with outside your standard temperate forest.

You got these igloos and snow covered castles. Pyramids and deserts. But no people to fill those places. No battle backgrounds and hardly any appropriate monsters locations. One title screens has camels on it, come on! And a sea serpent. And a Mayan pyramid.
You'd think, if they put a pair of swords on a title screen they would have corresponding swords in the database. Or a fancy gilded door. Or castle tiles that are, at the very least, the same color.

There are brick tiles that are meant to be used for sewers; not houses.

Tent & Stage tiles correspond with people4. They're thespians/nomads. They travel places and live in tents, naturally. This is supported by the tent battle background. It's really obvious it's meant for a nomadic tribe of some kind that hunts with bows and spears.
Maybe it's just me, but the majority of the actors look like they would belong to band of traveling performers.

Interestingly, this is where I noticed a good portion of the battle backgrounds are cut-off. I theorize, when using the side-view battle option, that the battle background is SUPPOSE to scale down to fit the screen width, and as a result make the background objects more proportional to the SV sprites. Turns out the battle backgrounds are pretty inconsistent. Some, like the tent, include a ceiling and 3 walls, which makes the walls and everything in the room smaller giving it a lot more depth. I'm making a silly short practice game and I want to make my world maps in a style similar to Super Mario World. The only problem is I don't know how to get the player to turn down when they get to an event node (the swirlies) that's directly adjacent to a crossroad node (the larger shinies) while still keeping it so that the event in the event node will trigger when the player presses the action button while on top of them. Alright, so under Bastion - Chapter 2: Complete
It's suppose to end by taking you to:
Azulia City - Chapter 3: Opening
(I deleted a blank map that it was originally routed through.)

To make the save file work, you'll have after to add 3 new maps till you get MapID 9 (You can delete it later), and just add an autorun event that transfers you to Azulia City - Chapter 3: Opening, you'll be in the place of Orihs.

And the next update is going to add more story to the intro, and give more information on how class swapping works.

One of the (very late game) ways to swap classes is through the use of an item, however, there doesn't seem to be a way to make it so an item is usuable without having any effects other than through events.
And when making am event in FES, there is an option to start it via item, so does anyone have any ideas?

Well this is embarrassing...
That map I deleted was also suppose to turn on Switch 53: Chapter 2 Complete

So, if you can, press F9 during the chapter 3 opening to open up the debug window and turn that switch on.
Try spamming it between between textboxes.

I used that switch to hide some cutscene characters and autorun camera events from chapter 1 that weren't suppose to run in chapter 3.

You should try to work out the "spicier" solution given. It's much smarter to only issue the command when the player changes his map coordinates. You're giving the command once every few seconds rather than sixty times every single second. If you make the change, you don't need to do the "down input? move down" hack-y fix either.

There will be the problem where your player's still able to turn other directions again, but you can fix this using the "direction fix" switch. Your movement command would be "face down, direction fix on". Then if they either enter that node, or walk away from it, you'd turn off the direction fix.

It's called "rakudo". Its storyline is a somewhat comedic take on war, with an ensemble cast of cute characters, many of whom are psychotic.

It's a variation on Minesweeper, kind of. It's largely about memorization: you move the cursor up and down like a maze, and some tiles you step on will do damage to the enemy - but some will do damage to the player. To make it more difficult, each one that does damage to the enemy can only be stepped on once - then then disappear and become useless.

Hope that gives a little more sense to what's going on here.

Old save file quirk. I should have updated that too.
In that event bstanon adds possesedjay to the party. Even though she's not playable, that actor and its graphic were initialized. I later combined character sheets, changing the graphic file name. But the save file still wants to use the old one.
Nothing really needs to be fixed. Although adding jaye as initialize or not adding her in the first place will fix that.
I meant to playthrough it again to update the save files.

So, in chapter 3, you control Orihs for arbitrary reasons.

I realize there are events in towns that speak as if they're talking to Colt. And if you walk back to Leputi, everything is still the same from Chapter 1.

Don't spend your time fixing that stuff up. Focus on your chapter first. And leave the backtracking and inconsistencies for someone else to iron out.
Unless you make it a point to revisit those places in your chapter.

The hard part of discipline is that you need to do it.

Earliest hour you can, get up and put in an hour of work. Ideally, you should 'cross off' one item on your to-do list, even if it's a small thing, per day.

If making maps and putting things together sucks dick, break it down into as small of tasks as possible and start doing them.

I got something done already, the prologue thing. I even considered posting it in the thread a few weeks ago but I really think it's too short and it doesn't yet present much of the gameplay and has none of the survival.
The wacky ideas aren't that hard since I already have idea how to go about them. Assembling maps is just bothersome, branching, event-sensitive dialogues aren't a problem, but graphics (especially since I am not an artist) and cutscenes are horrible pain in the ass right now.
Still I guess I've got my answer and I should limit my ambitions.

Possessed Jaye might be interested in Colt. Bastion could be interested in Orihs or Yzarc.
Could set these 2 antagonists against each other.

I think Dahl's alliances are all over the place. We see him with the Lord King in the beginning. But he and Jaye don't get along. And in chapter 1 he's pretty sketchy, talking about Nature and Perfection, before he gives Colt the telescope - knowing the dangers.
I don't know what his motivations are, Griselda and all that.
He's the only one that we've seen with guns. So you'd think he'd be the one to fire off a shot in ch3.
But you could introduce a new character.

Not him but in case of RPG Maker, dynamics of battles are almost never dependant on the size of actual party as much as the balance and party's effectiveness. You can have long, harrowing, dull slugfests with one character and you can have quick and brutal fights with huge, full party.
