This self loathing glasgay faggiola is hardly william wallace, I feel i kicked his arse here before and i'll do it again because some things are so obvious. Let's start with refinement? why bother when this genre has established arrange/black label modes? better off building a completely new refined mode rather than endlessly tweaking and forcing players to go back and get scores again and again. 2nd is marketing you and your ilk need some lessons in this desperately but most importantly beta testers.... the mistake you made was assuming the players being good would be enough but actually they're mostly retards who can't understand game design and see right through problems by being to good and adapting to quickly Gaimers being a perfect example. There's actually rarely correlation between skill level and problem finding like in speedrunning for example the majority of strats, glitches, problems etc are not found by the players so try to pick the right people next time ie me ands anyone else who's logically analytical and not self masturbatory ya wae fanny.

FUCK POO REVOLVER (hi danbo)

-The special weapon is not very balanced. Removing boss patterns, reducing stage big enemies into a single button press on spawn, I tried Cluster Missile and Val Hyper Laser (v1.11) and both destroy things very well. It would be better if there were enough enemies to take the excess firepower, but...

-...there are no enemies in the stages. Zun-style design in places with large gaps between enemy spawns, especially with the buffed Variable shots and special weapon use the enemies die off before the next ones spawn, making routing around them redundant too often. Notable exceptions are specific parts of Stage 4 and Stage 5 - the stage itself is hit and miss, alternating between very slow patterns with enemies spawning scarcely with copypasted formations and more interesting ones in the midsection turret wall.

-I don't really like the boss "spellcard" design. Some of the patterns are just "basic" to be fun when looped in such a way repeatedly - in a CAVE-style design with boss phases firing a series of attacks before looping, some of these could work as a singular 5-10 second attack, but extended into a full-length spellcard they become excessively repetitive, and highlight the pattern's simplicity - part of the CAVE design allure is also the way the attacks sequence into each other seamlessly, merging them into a more intense strategy game of prepping for the next attack towards the end of the previous one. Some attacks are good, but especially midbosses, and specifically the Stage 5 ones seem to suffer from this.
>>
>>180938382 cont.
-Stage 5 is shit. The 3-mid sized enemy patterns are copypasted repeatedly, the white enemy zako waves are copypaste, overall this stage's the worst in the game with few redeeming qualities. The previous stages, mostly Stage 1, 3 and 4 had some personality even with the flaws, but this one is very repetitive in its patterns while outstaying its welcome in duration. The midbosses are too numerous, and not particularly interesting - the lengthy breaks before midbosses spawn make it feel even slower. Stage 4 has much of the same dull design - I found Stage 1 and Stage 2 to be the most intriguing stages in the game, from that point on the enemy patterns become more drawn-out and copypaste/repetitive, Stage 3 already feels like a drag with the very slow-scrolling carrier midboss and several series of nondescript zako drops with nothing else on screen.

-The controls, visuals and sound are great, and the weapons are really fun to use - there's just not very much to use them on, since the enemies are few in number and drop very quickly when using the special weapon. I think the mechanics capture the fun of shooting things pretty well but the stage design and sparse, simplistic enemy patterns with way too much copypaste betray its potential, and the bosses are a mixed bag.

tl;dr it's poo

>>
>>180941994
>they need just the right amount of suck. cee believes he is fit for this job.
Kind of but not exactly, my point is players are not designers and players of a certain calibre like gaymers will adapt to anything so quickly that i don't think they register flaws or finer points to be tuned at all well, they also lack the creative vision because the focus for them is literally beating it/scoring and going back to wanking. Maybe it's just a case of diversifying input like cave do with location tests that see everyone who turns up get a say rather than just swy and chums. The fact is those testers let some GLARINGLY obvious issues float by probably because they were to busy ego stroking and uploading videos of clears for brownie points rather than analyzing the game with a broad demographic consumer potential in mind.

Bonus opinion, good players rarely design well see clover spack and that piece of shit he made to rape the eye of a gaijin.

(hi)

Most of this is a pretty fair assessment. Stage 5 is not the game's finest hour - the midbosses suffer from a lack of reactivity / "dynamicness", and should the player speedkill them, the stage is left with only some fairly basic, bland enemy waves that were only meant to be a quick breather between the midbosses. The boss is also not quite as climactic as I'd like - I'd be fairly happy with the TLB were it not for how quickly it can be killed now.

Long list of small fixes that the other stages want but I don't think they're as fundamentally broken as stage 5.

As far as special weapons and variable shot go, my approach to tuning them was wrong. The raw numbers will have to be dialled back, which is going to be tricky, but I think they can still end up pretty satisfying to use, since that's one of the things the game hopefully gets right.

Once I decide on a feature/todo list for "black label", I would like to get player feedback in an incremental way (say, a private beta test release every fortnight or so). If you're interested in taking part in that, you can email me at [email protected]

I don't have much in the way of time, resources or money, but since we won't be returning to STGs for a while I want to make this the best game it can reasonably be.

No idea what that other guy is talking about though.

I feel like I didn't "prime" our testers correctly, as in: here's what to focus on, here's what's still in flux, here's what's 100% done.

Also, I think it can be hard to get players motivated about testing a game. Especially for some of these changes I'm going to have to do, which are like - "Hi guys, now all the cool Val weapons you like are weaker, let me know what you think okay?"

>>
>>180950732
Unironically true. Games without counter stops take more skill to achieve WR in than those that do.
>>
>>180950253
Remember the original crimzon clover?
Game vomits extends like crazy, you spent 30% of the break/double break invincible, scoring wasn't even remotely balanced, simple mode was basically "let's remove all mechanics", some parts also had a ton of dead air (stage 5 beginning, especially on unlimited), cancel locks on unlimited were all or nothing (if you lost the full lock at the last frame, nothing would cancel and you were screwed), tlb 1st phase had way too much hp and the 2nd phase was only one pretty basic attack, the multiplier counter wasn't capped so it could go into thousands on unlimited, basically removing the need for maintaining it entirely, etc.

BR really isn't bad for a first effort, it's still better than a lot of arcade games
Remember that SDOJ scoring is basically all about cancels and then for whatever reason they entirely forgot to put enemies that cancel in stage 4, making the stage absolutely worthless for score no matter how hard you try
>>
>>180952132
wrong, that depends entirely on the standard of the current wr. Both are beyond any of us either way.

>>180952132
>Games without counter stops take more skill to achieve WR in than those that do.
Wrong donpachi proves otherwise, it depends on the difficulty of the counter stop and no one's managed donpachi legit yet by miles and the guwange one has only ever been done by japs to date.
>>
>>180952970

obviously but the standard for wr in a very popular game like ccwi is high. it's not some poojin that only 2 people play like battle traverse
>>180953143
donpachi counter stop was TAS by a known cheater on mame. you can destroy any WR if you TAS your way throughhumanly impossible situations for maximum scores.

>There was also another impetus for Gokujou Parodius. It had been awhile since I had worked on arcade games, so when I went down to the game center I felt like I was seeing it through the eyes of just another player, not a game developer. But I noticed there was nothing but vs. fighting games. I personally loved STGs like Gradius, but you could barely find even a single hori STG. Well, I thought, if no one else is making these, I’ll just have to do it myself! I wanted to make a hori STG precisely because we’re at this juncture.

>>180953953
Yes we get the point but it's more complicated than that and almost game specific, to answer your question though TASers know. Effort into the wr has to be accounted for as do other variables, you're just looking at it in a very simplistic black and white fashion that i'd expect from a lower I.Q.

>>
>>181006445
I'm really wondering: I'm pretty sure the arguably lackluster ports aren't to be blamed on Degica, but are actually CAVE's work. But it seems everyone in these threads is dancing around that. Does Degica even do anything outside of localisation and publishing? I doubt they have the manpower for anything more than that.

They still helped release these ports, so I mean certainly it is their responsibility to make sure the product is of good quality. But the ports are still done by CAVE, so really it all comes down to their incompetence. It's not like these are the only bad ports they've done either.
>>
>>181006445
>by chronologically releasing and shit ports?
"shit" is melodramatic. mediocre is better. as the other anon said, they aren't doing the ports. part of degica's publishing deal seems to be to act as a middleman for japanese devs that have poor/no communication skills to deal with the outside world.

>part of degica's publishing deal seems to be to act as a middleman for japanese devs that have poor/no communication skills to deal with the outside world.
Exactly so they hold the key to sales and should take a stronger approach to quality control like any shop and distributor does irl.

>>181008670

And at the end of the day, Degica is still a business with little competition in this particular niche and all the considerations being a business entails. Without competition the only impetus to improve quality is what can still drive sales. Passion doesn't pay bills.
>>
>>181009361
>Passion doesn't pay bills.
Nor does earning a reputation of selling below par products especially in this industry, people will become very wary and they will suffer. You don't need competition to understand the importance of reputation and quality control.

>>
>>181009702
Their quality isn't that bad. The only people flipping their shit are dad's with pcbs and soon to be dads with 360s. I guarantee you the most people buying these ports don't give a fuck about missing slowdown or anything else because they'll be credit feeding through anyway. The niche shmup cult may be the hardcore fans but they don't make up the majority of the sales.
>>
>>181008665
I think for Degica it's less about making a quick buck and more about getting anything out at all for the people that want it. The ports may not be perfectly arcade accurate but no single port of theirs has been, even on Xbox360. Of course, it's particularly bad on PC, but the best you can do is hope that it's at least possible to beat in cases like zero-slowdown Deathsmiles MBL and not too easy when they give you too much of it, like in normal Deathsmiles.

Either way CAVE doesn't seem to give a fuck, but they're not known to care about quality anyway if most of their post-90's and especially recent offerings are any indication. I doubt they'd lose any sleep over a lost deal with Degica. Whenever someone brought their games to outside of Japan, it was just a labour of love and never an attempt to score a huge success.
>>
>>181010623
>CAVE doesn't seem to give a fuck
they don't at all. IKD got mad because a programmer ported mushi matsuri while no one was paying attention because it was supposed to be an exclusive small release. didn't stop them from releasing it for that dollar dollar bill.
>>
As someone who's job it is porting legacy code to newer hardware platforms and configurations with timing sensitive hardware interactions I can tell you all that hardware emulation is actually quite hard and expensive, especially when you're dealing with poorly documented specifications for the old hardware.
>>
>>181011102
Yeah, of course hardware emulation is complex and resource-intensive, but that's not what CAVE does anyway. In the best-case scenario they'd have implemented a system that makes slowdown occur depending on a timer or counter or perhaps an enemy or bullet limit or something.
But instead they always relied on arcade hardware limitations to create slowdown. So in the ports since then they had to artificially recreate that slowdown, probably hardcoded that shit because there's no logic to it.

I mean fair enough, it got the job done on the arcade hardware, but it's not smart design.
>>
>>181011102
>I can tell you all that hardware emulation is actually quite hard and expensive
>>181011869
>Yeah, of course hardware emulation is complex and resource-intensive

Exaggerated by cave using shite hardware like sh-3 and even shitter methods as you rightly say to achieve results ie "lol lets just crap out the sprite limit every 2 seconds for muh matrix effect".
>>
>>181011869
>I mean fair enough, it got the job done on the arcade hardware, but it's not smart design.
They probably had no plan or intention to ever port the games to any other system while they were creating them and it didn't occur to them that it might be a problem one day. I'd call it a lack of foresight more than anything else. At least they had it together enough to keep some of the code, there are games that are completely lost forever.
>>
>>181012716
>I'd call it a lack of foresight more than anything else.
Completely unacceptable for a company with a history of ports to consoles at a time of internet international markets flourishing with half the costs of the old methods. Cave are dumb fucking children desu and ppl should stop making excuses for them.
>>
>>181012716
CAVE games were ported to consoles since their early days, they'd be retarded not to consider the possibility.
>>
>>181012716
>I'd call it a lack of foresight more than anything else.
Sure, I mean, that's basically what I said and what non-smart design amounts to, among other things.
CAVE isn't alone on that of course, most devs don't design their games in a way that would make them easy to scale, port or maintain them later on and it's a shame.
>>
>>181008287

That is the entire problem, they were only porting to consoles. They can recreate the slowdown on consoles without issue because the hardware is standardized. It doesn't work so well when you're porting it to PC.
>>
>>181014821
aye fair, they should gone with nesica instead of retard sh3 or maybe try for once designing a game around the aspect of no slowdown and do it with software.

>>
>>181084469

Says in the description these were only tested on XP. No guarantees it'd work on 10 or even 7/8. I guess you could try running it in compatibility mode and see what happens.
>>
>>181084620
Unfortunately running it in cmode as 98/Vista/XP(sp2&3)/7 all yielded the same result. The game starts full screen and immediately everything is moving super fast. So fast the game is locked in demonstration mode, which ends in a few seconds and then immediately starts again. Hitting any button will take you to options sometimes but it 'times out' in less than a second and returns to demonstration mode. Getting into character select immediately grabs first character it can find, starts stage and it all ends in seconds while the sound is garbled and sped up. CS2 seems to work (but not with controller) and CS3 gives an error.
Thank you for the help though! I just really wanted to check it out to see if it was worth grabbing on Steam so its not a total loss I suppose.

>>
>>181098772
CAVE adding fanservice to their more recent games is obviously completely unrelated to Touhou.

...It's more about the fact that by ~2000, their games have already become stagnant, with barely any new/interesting patterns and stages and instead rank+hypersonic bullets making the game hard indeed, yet boring for everyone except the most "hardcore" of achievers.

And since they've already run out of creativity, they resort to cheap tricks like fanservice or *SIGH* crappy mobile ports in a desperate attempt to stay relevant. And I feel like after Degica runs out of CAVE games to port to different platforms, the latter is going to sink for good. The arcade era is over.

Why? It feels slow, there's far less option with upgrades, less ship types, the 3D isn't that charming (completely indiv pref, I know), and there's not much variety (so far). The scoring system is kinda interesting, but it's not so earth shattering to overcome the other faults. Does it get way better later on?

>shmups at least are mostly dead.

Yeah. Especially since the thing that the very words "bullet hell" and "danmaku" nowadays seem to be associated with at least here in the West is a certain game series about flying shrine maidens. Literally, if you ask anybody who is not into hipsterware what bullet hell is, in 95% of all cases the answer will be either "Don't know/care" or "Touhou".

Though I believe that the death of the old "arcade danmaku" paradigm/formula and the switch to the new is only natural. While many people blame it for the generally poor quality of all the "imma-make-my-own-Touhou-with-spellcards-and-grazing-lets-also-add-roguelike-elements" and "int angle = rand()%365 I CAN INTO DANMAKU LOL" shmups appearing on Steam as of recently, it should be obvious that the cause of it is poor implementation, not the formula itself(with the actual Touhou games being very fun and not at all boring to play in my experience)

it's not just kids, even dads do this, not ones on farm or some arcade forum of course, but dad reviewers on youtube for example, i've talked with one recently, he played since 80s yet he never heard about "1cc rule" and considers games that let you credit feed to be too easy.

I don't know how many hours it took. Around 2 days of practice.
It had a lot to do with luck though. I still can't consistently beat the first loop, since some patterns are just bullshit in this game, and require super precise execution, if you don't want to use too many bombs.

I played the also earlier a bit some time ago, and I also played a fair bit of Strikers 99 already. Plus I also just came from playing Raiden, which has a similar style (but with less bullshit patterns).

Also, perhaps I just have a more hours in shmups than you. Your skills really do transfer over games.
>>

Also, that'd be better than what I can do. I mostly die already in stage 4. And if not there then stage 6 or 7.

i just bombed like there is no tommorow since i only aim for 1-all. probably would've cleared it already, but got too tired of the game becouse played 3 hours a day. you are going for 2-all? i hear suicide bullets are very random.
>>
>>181131674
Yes, I want to 2-all this. Most people just don't shoot the popcorn enemies in the second loop, especially during boss fights. I think when you manage to do this, then the second loop is not that much different from the first one.
>>
>>181132047
>I think when you manage to do this, then the second loop is not that much different from the first one.
The first 4 stages are a lot harder than in the first loop, the later stages aren't much tougher than the first loop except for the revenge bullets ofc
>>
>>181133054
>The first 4 stages are a lot harder than in the first loop
May be, but that's also what you saved your bombs for then.
I think when you manage to do the first loop without bombing much, then the second loop is not that much harder anymore.
>>
>>181133895
And the best way to have a good loop 1 is to practice loop 2 anyway, you will not get anywhere practicing loop 1 alone.
The game isn't that bad with Bf-109 honestly but with most other ships it's a nightmare
>>
>>181134804
You have to practice both loops. I already find loop 1 pretty hard though, at least if you are not bombing much and try to medal decently.
>>
>>181135996
Don't bother with loop 1 and just start practicing loop 2 asap, after enough loop 2 practice loop 1 will get pretty easy and the few differences are easy to learn.
>>
>>181136250
When I constantly use bombs in loop 2 then the routes are completely different.
I actually already learned loop 1, but there are just some patterns which are complete bullshit, and depends on luck, imo.
I mostly die when not in stage 4 then in stage 6, because in stage 6 there is a pattern which is just complete complete bullshit.
And when I die there then I just restart because I lost 6 bombs or so.
>>
>>181136951
>When I constantly use bombs in loop 2 then the routes are completely different.
That's the problem, you should aim for bombless routes and only use bombs if you fuck up your route, russia boss is the only one that is a bombfest and tank boss needs some bombs if you have bad luck, but the rest is perfectly able to nmnb.
and where you die in stage 6
>>
>>181117707
This is also why I believe that especially nowadays, it is better for a bullet hell game not to have continues at all, but instead, (optionally) have checkpoints at certain stages(though balancing them is another story in itself) and practice mode available for every stage you've encountered.

I also like Epic Battle Fantasy: Bullet Heaven's stage-based approach to this, especially considering it is one of the few Touhoulikes these days to actually have some effort put into stage design and not just boss design.

Bullshit. The game is way too difficult and has too many bullshit patterns to not use bombs. And the bullets are so fast that you can't use bombs as a panic button. If I try to use them like this, then it's always 0.1 seconds too late.

>and where you die in stage 6
I always die at pic related. It's one of the bullshit patterns. It's possible to do it without bombing, but I always have bad luck there in a run.
>>
They say history and culture repeat themselves in cycles. So maybe we can expect videogames to become good again in the future and by extension shmups and arcade culture in general to make a comeback; a videogame renaissance if you will?
>>
>>181138761
it's not hard for me, just use your special right after you defeat previous phase and pointblank for as long as you can, then tap to the side and he's dead. i fail next part more often, you know the very tip of the rocket that shoots pattern which traps you while zakos are coming from sides.
>>
>>181138810
Well Crash Bandicoot is back, Bubsy is getting a sequel, Metroid is getting two new games, and Sonic Mania actually looks good, so I guess anything is possible if you wait long enough.
>>
>>181138761
The bombs should be used mostly for the random zako in the bosses, most of the stages are actually really static and as long as you have a good route they don't require many bombs. Really I think you'll progress much faster if you just focus on loop 2 instead of practicing loop 1+2 individually, but if time is not a problem then be my guest

Oh and for that pattern just use plasmo's strat, stage 6 is static af in both loop 1 and 2
>>
>>181138326
they'll just grind through checkpoints, never bothering to 1cc. few games that have no continues are considered the hardest shit ever even when it's easy 1cc. i'd like to see a shmup without continues and checkpoints at all, it's the only way to teach these people to play properly.

I always do it like pic related. Where light blue is the charge shot option, blue is the ship, and red is the bullet which mostly kills me.
I try to point-blank them, but they don't die soon enough and still shoot me in the last moment.

The next part is easy. There I just point the charge shot at the rocket, then go right and shoot the zako coming there, and then go left while the bullets from the rocket just fly by my sides.

I would have replied earlier, but 4chan doesn't even let me upload inked pics done in windows 10.
>>
>>181139824
Practicing loop 2 when you don't even have loop 1 down seems nonsical to me. Maybe that I could clear it faster this way, but I don't really care how fast I clear the game, I rather care about being consistent at the game.
>>
>>181140713
you should put charge on the ship for max damage, not on zakos, it will kill it while you are dodging, then you can finish zakos.
>I try to point-blank them, but they don't die soon enough and still shoot me in the last moment.
let options finish them after you destroy ship, above all you want to kill ship which spawns them.
>>
>>181141157
>you should put charge on the ship for max damage, not on zakos
I point the charge shot at ship... It's obvious in the drawing I think.

>let options finish them after you destroy ship
The option doesn't even hit all of them. I have to kill the 2 on the right side as soon ass possible, otherwise they kill me. But they somehow often not die soon enough, even though I point blank them and shoot them as soon as they appear.
And when they don't kill me, then the ones on the left side kill me, while I dodge upwards.

>arcade culture in general to make a comeback

Depends on what exactly you mean by "arcade culture". Because if you mean arcades themselves with machines you feed quarters to in order to play, as well as similar game design choices, then... that's obviously not going to happen. Some game design choices making a return? Maybe, but then again, many of them turn into gameplay FLAWS when ported to a PC or a home console(I'm looking at YOU, Garegga).

>>181140443
Depends on how much "pure" difficulty the game holds and how frequent/scarce the checkpoints are. And even with checkpoints on borderline every step, you can still make a game very challenging(see: LoLK aka the I Wanna Be the Guy of shmups)
>>
>>181146392
>Depends on how much "pure" difficulty the game holds and how frequent/scarce the checkpoints are
that's not my point, i'd like people to 1cc, not grind through checkpoints, no matter how hard it may be. forcing them to 1cc is the only way.

>>181143968

>>
>>181147393
It may be the only way for you, but not for other people. Not to mention grinding for a 1cc is often times just like grinding for completion with checkpoints, just more tedious(since you have to redo the earlier stages every time, and it gets old FAST).

I personally would just reserve an optional "hardcore" mode for people like you, like, once again, LoLK(somewhat) did(you get a bad ending in Legacy if you don't beat it without dying)

>Just seems like hardcore fans of a genre think reviews should only talk to them.
As opposed to only talking to casuals and never going into depth about the genre's strengths besides the most surface level shit? This kind of attitude triggers me, it's just a complete refusal to engage with games in a fair way. Instead it's taking some arbitrary "objective" standards and trying to apply them universally. This is the kinda person that will complain about Quake 3 not having a 10 hour single player campaign.
>>
>>181179940
Danmaku Unlimited 2 is much easier than 3, the difficulty is more evenly spread out too. 3 has very easy levels but tough boss fights. Crimzon Clover is a terrible beginner game. Novice modes don't require any strategy, while arcade modes are too difficult for someone new to shmups.

As for the 1cc thing, not everyone is as "hardcore" as you, once again, plus the whole paradigm around games with arcade-style gameplay has changed.

>>181149826
>>181161686
>Also, what's wrong with Battle Garegga on home systems?

Mainly the annoyingly steep rank system. I believe "mandatory" rank in general is not exactly the best design choice, but in games like Garegga especially, where you actively HAVE to suicide and then extend-grind in order to be able to have even a chance at a 1cc.
>>

DOJ via pcsx2 has never worked well for me, you ought to use MAME.

>>
>>181209208
It's not even the difficulty level, it's the type of difficulty. I haven't played the games you mentioned but I've beaten IWBTG, SMB, VVVVV, N+ (DS ver) and Battle Kid which all had similar checkpoint systems, and it's a much shittier, more brainless way to handle difficulty. It doesn't test consistency, it doesn't encourage strategy (not that those games have much in the way of strategy), it allows lucky blindless play and it discourages scoring. I'll have to try LoLK but based on practice modes and save states I can tell you that frequent checkpoints do not work for most styles of shmups because not only is the execution fairly relaxed but lucky dodges are all over the place.

>>
>>181209208
Well then the rank system isn't really a problem only on home systems though, right? Since it works the same on the arcade and requires suiciding.
But yeah, a game that at its hardest isn't possible to beat without dying isn't well-balanced. Is it really that hard though?
>>
>>181209208
>Well then, if you still believe anything with checkpoints is easy
wtf, i never said it's always easy, i only said that it's not a proper way to play an arcade-design game, for reasons already explained by other anon. checkpoints are okay for example in colllectathons or euroshmups, but not in japanese, score-centric arcades, but people don't get it, which is why they should be forced to 1cc.

Depends on how the checkpoints are balanced. It's not always either one or another extreme.

Also, for scorefags, I feel like I'd also need to design a separate endless or time attack mode for just so that they don't whine about "inconsistent scoring on certain patterns" or "game discouraging scoring".

>>181215269
>japanese, arcade shmup are designed to be 1cc'ed

Except not every bullet hell game is meant to be a "pure Japanese arcade shmup". The oldschool approach is only one of the few possible ones, and it's not exactly the "perfect" or the "only right" one. If you believe that it is, then just go back to fapping to giant robotic bees and don't try to tell us how we should design our games.

How about a shmup, which tracks the amount of credits you use, and has something like "universal score" which gets higher the less credits and time you need to clear the game/reach good scores?
>>

punishing player for spending more time is a horrible idea, he should be rewarded instead, like an exp bar tied to your score, so if you scored high in a session you get more exp, allowing you to unlock bonus stuff like art and soundtrack, this way scoring and playing more is encouraged. but no continues/checkpoints, if you think otherwise don't talk to me or my options ever again.
>>
>>181224047
>punishing player for spending more time is a horrible idea
It's just fair. If someone has a similar score to yours, but took only half as much time for it, then he is obviously the better player. Only problem I see with this would just be that it encourages excessive replay study too much.
>>
>>181224385
It has many flaws for one it turns the aspect of learning the game into a competition which is a retarded unnecessary pressure. Now to be competitive you not only to optimize your actual score but also all of your playtime because if you don't then you risk losing to someone with a lower score.
>>
>>181224385
>then he is obviously the better player
he could be a better player becouse he is more talented, that's not "just fair". or he could be playing since 90s, so you'll be discouraging new players and players who make their own routes instead of copying replays.
>then he is obviously the better player
higher score in-game - better player(at this game), simple as that.
>>
>>181224720
>it turns the aspect of learning the game into a competition which is a retarded unnecessary pressure
Thats already the case anyway. The really good players are always fast learners, because otherwise they wouldnt be able to be competetive in many games.
>>
>>181224759
>you'll be discouraging new players and players who make their own routes instead of copying replays.
players like this have no chance anyway in the world of scoring
>>
>>181224842
No it isn't, hell you don't even know the playtimes of most players yet you know their scores. All you're left with is guesses based on some things they've said. Scores also aren't there to compare who is the better overall player, they're there to compare who is the better player at that particular game.

Man, Gigantic Bite is a fucking nightmare, I'm currently devising strategies against it and victory seems nigh.
But there are missions where you have to beat it with the Origin Silver Hawk. I can't imagine how that is supposed to be possible. I'll do it though!

Yeah, that one's pretty ridiculous. The best way to fight G.T.V is to use the detached beam from below, and let it cut diagonally upwards. That'll keep you safe from the off-screen orange lasers that try to home in on you from a 90° angle.
Counter its beams whenever you can so you're safe to move within them and dodge the other shit.

It's pretty hard! And sadly, Gigantic Bite is definitely even harder still...

>>
>>181313482
Well, I enjoyed most of the boss patterns and figuring them out(not to mention they are visually beautiful), however, the stage design often enough felt lacking(maybe that's because I started with IN?). The games were hard, but not unfairly hard(on normal at least, also, I haven't played Subterranean Animism or LoLK yet). And, of course, the music is awesome.
>>
>>181313876
Many non jewish germans helped his career greatly and made his ideas spread as a result, don't try to downplay that. Where would Marx be without Engels?
>>
>>181314914
Mushihimesama on maniac is a good choice it has the slow bullets and micrododging with better stage design
>>
>>181313482

Branching out may be good then. Touhou's stage design stays pretty flat throughout the series(probably the most enjoyable for me came from PCB).

Ikaruga's widely regarded as a classic though there are points you may find frustrating or more reliant on memory than you're used to.

Based on your feedback, I would avoid the Danmaku Unlimited series for now. I find them good for a quick adrenaline rush, but more frustrating than interesting by the time I get to bosses. Furthermore unless you enjoy listening to 20 permutations of the same power metal track for hours on end the soundtrack will disappoint.

Aesthetic-wise there's bound to be something that fits your tastes in CAVE's offerings, hard to say exactly what to recommend aside from the 'safe' choices like Mushi and DOJ. While I haven't played it myself yet I've heard good things about Espgaluda.

For side-scrollers there's Dariusburst. CS is probably the most accessible for the style you're looking for if you consider enemy ships as bullets. Soundtrack definitely has its moments too. I'll leave it to Casper to weigh in on Deathsmiles. Gradius if you want to futz with another 'classic'. As interesting as the bosses are, I can't say I'd recommend the 360 port of Akai Katana since you can spend a whole day just learning about how all the mechanics work.

Then there's ccwi. Memes aside, I think it's solid, relatively easy to pick up, but quite hard to clear much less master. Can't say I love the soundtrack and some of the visual choices though.

Espgaluda is a great game for newer players, last level's difficulty spike aside. Having slow mo gives you more control over the game's difficulty than you'd have in any other similar kind of game. It's also easy but not so easy that you can beat it without a strategy.

If 9 is Ketsui Ura, and 2 is Gunnail I'd put Blue Revolver Parallel around 4-6 depending on shot type, Variable shots in v1.11 are overpowered. Maybe around the dreaded CCWI Original without Type-Z, give or take?

The stage sections should be manageable with special weapon cheesing, and bomb to recharge it on Stages 4 and 5 where ammo is more scarce. The bosses can be quite scary, special weapon speedkills and the bomb stock are very effective on that end as well. Bombs are weak against the Stage 5 boss and TLB, so spend them on the earlier stage bosses and stage sections without trying to stockpile unnecessarily.
>>
>>181364723
Is there some logic to dodging stage 2's boss first pattern? Sometimes it goes easy as fuck sometimes I need to bomb.
>>
>>181365691
The purple bullets seem totally random, bombing it seems reasonable if they're giving a hard time. If the curved lines from the pods are a problem try looking at pods at the time they fire and moving to areas between them in advance. Also, the pod on the lower-left fires first of the closer pods after they've moved a step, so watch out for it first and then for the one on the right (depending on which ones are alive).

bullet soul infinite coming to steam

Still far from a Hyper 1cc but after a few hours of practice I've managed to get some problem sections down. I sorta developed a tendency to not bomb and just try to dodge everything like I have something to prove to someone and that might hurt some and help some I guess.

I just tried playing some other shmup after 12 overall hours of bullet revolver and it's so fucking hard to get used to the location of my hitbox relative to my sprite, though.

This is pretty common. I'm fairly sure most players try to hoard bombs, either because the game has a bomb bonus or they want all of them for later stages.

Start bombing when you practice, that helps me.

Why would you go from Touhou to Blue Revolver? Throw in Ikaruga and you've got a greatest hits of games I have no interest in playing.

Damn, as I was about to get Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders I saw Rayforce and RayStorm in the Google Play store as well.
It's kind of cool that they're there and that Taito is getting their stuff out there still, but I'd be more happy if they had been released on Steam or something first or at all before being relegated to a smartphone release...

I always wonder too what was going on with the publishing situation of DBCS. How come Square Enix didn't just publish it? After all, it's a Taito game, though it was developed by Pyramid.
But now for some reason Kadokawa is the publisher in Japan I guess, and Degica for the worldwide Steam version? How complicated...

I've thought about this too. Could there be hope for Darius Gaiden or G.Darius?

Well, probably not too soon, but some day, probably.

RayForce, RayStorm, Space Invaders and GrooveCoaster 2 on the Play store are all self-published by Taito, and RayCrisis is on the way too.
So it looks like they still have some free reign to do whatever they want. For some reason Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders was published by SE. Maybe it's just silly technicalities that make it happen like that.

It really shouldn't be a problem for SE to publish all of Taito's games worldwide; they have the reach and the budget, but perhaps they don't have any expendable staff to handle it and that's why third-parties like Degica have to come in and handle localisation, publishing and marketing.
Of course in my opinion SE should stop fucking around making bad FF games and instead dedicate their resources to the porting and localisation of the full Taito catalog instantly! But that's not gonna happen.

I think Degica would do it though, but I'm not sure if it's in their power to talk to Taito and initiate such a project directly or if we'll all just have to pray to G.T. for Taito to get on it and work with Kadokawa and Degica to release worldwide again.
I think we'll probably get the Ray games before we'll ever get Darius Gaiden and G.Darius though, considering there's been work done for those recently, if only for smartphones. Which is fine by me, for the moment anyway! But they better get on it.

I see the fact that they churned out so much DLC for Dariusburst as semi promising. Why would they do it if it wasn't profitable? Maybe it will mean more Darius or G.rev (shmups) someday. Chara-Ani and Degica co-published Dariusburst and G.rev came on to do the later DLCs, afterwards the three of them went on to do Senko no Ronde 2 together. Can't be a coincidence.
