Lore should always come last in an xcom game imo. So there really is no reason it couldn't be 50% human 50% ethereal. If they decided to write in a more alien looking hybrid, it wouldn't contradict anything in the story thus far.

nah, lore is a crucial cornerstone for how the aliens look and for how they all work together. The lore creates a reason for why aliens look and act the way they do, and gives us a reason for fighting them. Emotional investment is important for the player and the lore provides that. Having The Thing fighting alongside a cartoony sectoid from ogxcom would just be retarded and take you out of the game.

Right, but I pointed out that having Avatars look alien would not contradict the story as it currently is leading up to their reveal in any way. You would just be changing one thing. In this case, you can literally go:
Enemy design -> fit it into plot
There's nothing there that says the avatars needs to look human. And ironically enough, your argument that if you didn't follow the lore things would look retarded falls really flat when discussing the Avatar which looks the goofiest and most out of place of any of the enemies.

XCom 2, all the DLC so far. Game grabs random people from the character pool along with some random people for the initial mission and available troops, and then there's some randoms in the recruiting screen and not all of my characters are there. Has happened five times in a row and I've set it to Character Pool Only then exited and restarted the game.

Are pistols useful? I've got a sharpshooter with Quick Study, and I'm thinking about going holotargeting, center mass, and hunter's instincts for eventually +5 damage with better holotargeters. While we're on the subject of organizing new squads, how do people set up their dudes early game in Xenonauts? I usually do two fire-teams, one close combat with a shield, two assaults, and a rifleman, and one cover element with three riflemen and a machine gunner.

Honestly it was amazingly fun and my first real challenge. I'd had some close calls lost about 4 rookies since the start. But no major cockups. Until this.

Almost a code black and that was my favorite team as well. It was a grenidier a rocketeer a medic and 3 riflemen. Thank Christ for light em up. Without that we would have been over run immediatly.

I think it's a go big or go home kind of thing. If you can win a lot of larger supply raid, corpse retrieving missions you can get the supplies from that mission, and even the worst corpse sells for 5, so just 12 corpses is an extra 60 supplies even if they were all trash.

at 170% infiltration the detection range is minimal, couple that with the shinobi's ghostwalk ability and the SMG's -detection range and you can use the shinobi to scout for the target, while positioning the sharpshooter somewhere high to take a squadsight shot. that will alert a pod but it will not break the concealment of the shinobi, allowing you to drop evac next to the sniper for a safe and easy mission.

I do realize these are ideal situations but you did have time to prepare, you just lacked the knowledge on how to properly deal with this kind of mission.

I never found Haven Defense missions that hard. Bring a Shinobi to round up the civilians and use the rest of the squad to wipe each pod as it arises. So long as you're able to stop enemies piling up it's an absolute cakewalk, especially if you drop near a large building in the corner you can castle up and overwatch from.

That's what I usually do, but on my last one, half the reinforcements spawned outside of my LoS in a really good position, and the map was so huge that my shinobi could barely reach half the haven members that weren't already at the extract zone and get back within six rounds, at which point the reinforcements consisted of ten or more units; I left at least 20 behind. The Faction soldiers all gain Ability Points (AP) when they rank up, so you can always purchase at least one ability from their new rank.
Each soldier also has a new "Combat Intelligence", which modifies how much AP they earn at each rank. Smarter soldiers earn more AP, so they can buy more abilities.
And on top of that, you can then choose to spend any extra AP you've earned from combat (listed as "XCOM AP" on the promotion screen) to purchase additional abilities.
Very possible to unlock all of the abilities if you really invest in one soldier, or if they're super smart
Base game soldiers also have Combat Intelligence and gain AP when they rank up, but you can't access their "expanded" skill tree and spend it until you build the Training Center.

This is what we talk about with optimization. Bugs and statistics start messing up after a long session.

I've seen bugs where the enemy AI doesn't load, players glitching and falling through a roof to take fall damage, enemies disappearing but taking multiple turns, etc.

I would say that elevation is probably the weirdest thing in this game, just fix the fact that the damn floor should block LOS.

Rooftops should be a pretty good advantage, not a death sentence because a muton can small imperfections in ceilings and blow right through them.

Hell I'd like if the game had some option to shoot through floors and have your soldier have to "guess" where they are and just spray through the roof.

But floors have been fucked sense EU. I've lost too many soldier to weird shit, that I actually have started avoiding anything that seems even remotely fishy and having to do with elevation.

Careful with this one, it's probably not a bug. Vigilance increases sight range, not just how big your detection range is. Makes it so you might not be able to see them because your sight range only goes out 10 tiles, but their sight range is 13 and they can see you just fine.

Mods have had this happen for my Xcom soldiers and I can literally stand in the middle of the street and the aliens don't know how to react and just stand there.

When certain enemies gain ranks, they actually get the Shadowsneak perk, so they won't trip your overwatches. It's fucked my game up too. Get Gotcha Again and Another F1 mod so you can see sight lines better as well as abilities when you press F1 while targeting an enemy. Make sure you won't get surprised when enemies start getting new shit.

I think this has to do with the floor getting treated as one solid object and not individual tiles that all check for LOS like walls do. If you have a break in the floor, you can get shot through it. LOS issues was the one thing they said they made the replay thing for, so they could see in the code why there was a LOS blocker where there shouldn't be, or why something wasn't breaking LOS.

Hopefully the expansions bug fixes will finally do something about this, but I doubt it.

Well you may as well get them, because in a month LW2 won't be updated for fucking ever while we're stuck on vanilla WotC.

the SPARK dlc is passable for LW2, but fun the first time either way.

Alien Hunters is again good, it takes no prisoners if you are unprepared and adds genuinely terrifying enemies for the first playthrough, I'd recommend it.

The 3rd one is just a character designer pack, not to my tastes but it might be to yours.

Well as a xcom lore wizard, I can tell you that playing LW2 is just playing X2 on a different difficulty level that adds mechanics and enemies. Very simple stuff. So just as vanilla X2 gives enemies more hp on legendary, LW2 does the same stuff.

There is a proper difficulty curve in Long War. By proper, I mean that the campaign starts easy and gets harder as you go along, unlike the tradition X-COM inverse difficulty curve.
So yeah, give it a shot, but you are definitely playing on something much tougher.
