Is it ever worth it to compete for colonial land? I just watched Italy, >Poortugal and Scandinavia take 3/4 of West Africa, Swahililand, and the Kongo respectively while Britain and France competed over.. Lagos. They got up to 13 levels of investment in the colony each and now just have little tiny shards of the continent, and it looks like it's gonna start a crisis. The only time I can ever picture this being worth it is when somebody threatens your encirclement of the great lakes regions or something.

One would be to be decentralized, with each region being national socialistic in their own way(but we all know how that ended up, although it could still work)
Another one is to simply unite the ethnicities.(In a albanian-less version), there would be arguably three(bosniaks,croats and serbs).As I said before, Bosniaks are just muslim Croatians.Now you are left with only Croatians and Serbians, which share pretty much everything culture-wise except religion(which wouldn't matter in a secular state).

If you take Swahililand, you essentially cap off any other power entering East Africa. Combine this with an early game invasion of Ethiopia and Egyptian Nubia (which you can easily pick up in a war for the Suez> and you have your startpoints. You can then draw a line around the great lakes region to Zambia, going through Far Kongo and ending in Zambia. Portugal rarely has the industry available to build the naval bases it requires to colonize, which means you can use them and Oman to seal off the non Somaliland parts of the eastern seaboard. From there it just requires six years of colonization to draw your line down through Far Kongo/Zambia which will usually be uninterrupted because the major powers are fighting over East Africa/have to go through the whole kongo to interrupt your line.

Once the line is drawn nobody can colonize past it and you've essentially locked that region down for yourself.
