So I just beat this game last week for the first time, and I've been lurking here for a few days. I'm definitely on the Baefag side. But I've been thinking about how the final time-line ends up if you choose to "sacrifice the Bay". Max uses Warren's photo to jump to Thursday night before the party, she warns Chloe and they never go to the party, never go to the junkyard, don't get ambushed Chloe's not shot, Max doesn't end up in the Dark Room. Instead according to what Chloe said afterwards they just went to her mom's house and... what? Just sat around all Thursday night/Friday morning waiting for the storm? Sure they could have just spent the night having wild, uninhibited sex, but it seems like it would have been the perfect opportunity to WARN EVERYONE THEY KNOW ABOUT THE STORM.

Some people wouldn't believe them sure, but if Max told Warren to just get his family and anyone else he can and get them to leave town for the day, you know he'd do it. Same for Kate if you saved her. Or how about this, everyone you helped out or made friends with over the week could have some kind of point system where they're willing to believe Max or not based on what you did. If you saved Vanessa from getting hit or helped Brook hook up with Warren or was sympathetic about Taylor's mom and so on they trust her.

Look at that, I just came up with a way they could have put in more than two endings AND made all the choices you made throughout the game ACTUALLY FUCKING MATTER. Imagine that.

Why do you think this place has existed for so long? Love of Pricefield and disdain for the endings. Which turned out to be a big blessing in disguise and allowed us to continue to this point.
Anyway, best thing to do is discuss stuff here and read lots a fics (Check the recs sections in the OP). Even though I haven't seen any really good post-storm fics yet. Mostly fix-it ones where Max does as many people wanted her to do and find a third option (But that's not her fault, that's the writers who dumbed her down for the finale)

Not to say the lewdness of Max and Chloe potential love making is pornographic and cant be shown because it can if done right but if you dont call out stuff like that which ive seen on threads already but call out waifufags its a bit of a hypocrite thing to do.

Okay so I just finished this game last night at 3am so I haven't had a ton of time to look at different discussions about the ending online, but I have looked through quite a few and I have yet to see anybody talk about my take on it, which shocked me that nobody else seems to have seen it this way.

The choice you make isn't "Save Arcadia by sacrificing Chloe, or let Arcadia be destroyed to save her", you aren't choosing between which one of those scenarios happens because BOTH OF THEM ARE ALREADY GOING TO HAPPEN/ALREADY DID HAPPEN (depending on how we want to talk about time).

Not only does time travel itself imply (dare I say depend on) the multiverse theory, but they made it pretty clear in the game itself that this is the case because Max and Chloe both talk about how these different "times" Max traveled to mean there are other Max's and Chloe's in other universes. So, multiverses. Meaning there is an infinite number of universes for every single possibility that exists throughout all of time.

This means that in the end, you aren't choosing to save Chloe or Arcadia, because no matter what you choose both will be destroyed in these two respective universes. You're simply choosing which universe you want to continue your life in; the one where you lose Chloe, or the one where you lose Arcadia. Again, both are going to happen no matter what, in the current universe you're in making the choice, Arcadia IS going to be destroyed, and Max and Chloe WILL be together in the end. So if you leave that universe, you aren't saving anybody, you're just choosing to go to the universe where Chloe dies, and WHY THE FUCK WOULD ANYBODY WANT TO DO THAT EVER?

How is the clear choice not staying in the universe where you get to be with Chloe?! You aren't saving anybody no matter what, just choosing which one YOU want to keep living in. Both universes will continue to exist with or without "your" Max, so why not choose to stay in the one with Chloe?

I think dontnod might of had ideas for a follow up with LiS for an actual prequel after the storm but scrapped the ideas for good when they found out more people Kissed Warren and Sacrificed Chloe at the end, thus making it pointless as they had already thought to make an "after the storm".
No more more Chloe and no more max after the Prequel series, no more of all the characters we got to know and love, instead all new characters.
This sucks. I know we cant keep using max and Chloe but the series should really be about max journey growing from a shy teen to an adult with powers in a world where she may be the only one.
I dont even see myself liking anyone more than pricefield and i see LiS2 being a huge disappointment.
Why even build a world off of characters for 1 season and a prequel just to start blank slate in season 2? its fucking stupid.

But what about everybody else other than Max? You're only looking at if from Max's point of view, what would all of this look like from Chloe or any other character's POV?
Also, we found out in the last episode that while "our Max" (her consciousness) is in another universe, she DOES continue existing in the "original" universe. Or when she travels using Warren's picture to warn Chloe, she tells her once her consciousness leaves in a minute the Max in that universe won't remember their conversation, but she will come back and join them eventually.

Anyway, as I said time travel itself implies this, so I don't see how it can be disputed, and you haven't provided any argument against it other than "I don't like it"

If time travel technology was a reality (chiefly time travel to the past), there are two alternative possibilities -

A single timeline/universe (Ex - The Terminator, Harry Potter): This is when a time travelling entity causes an already documented event in the past. For instance, when the terminators are dispatched to the past, they induce the circumstances that result in the formation of The Resistance. This essentially means that the past and future are inextricably linked; the past causes the future which causes the past. This raises questions regarding choice, free will, fate, destiny etc.
Multiple timelines/multiverse (Ex - Source Code, X-Men DoFP): The time travel results in the future being different form the original future as experienced by the time traveller. The time traveller has thus either created an entirely new universe or simply travelled to the past of a different universe (the latter suggestion being more likely), thus causing the events in the past of the second universe resulting in that universe being different from the first.

That is precisely why. I see absolutely no reason why I should have to automatically assume the worst possible case as reality when I have no evidence to say that's how it is. To me it's as equally unsavory and out of touch as "Everyone dies in the storm".

Multiple timelines would be terrible since it would be Maxes suddenly finding themselves without memory in some very harrowing situations: Maxes that now have a dead Chloe on their hands, a Max that just euthanized Chloe, Maxes dying at Jefferson's hands, and tons of other bad stuff. Then think about the other characters: Joyces and Davids that have lost Chloe, Ryans and Vanessas that have lost Max, timelines where Jefferson escapes to continue his crimes, etc.

You're saying the words in the nightmare are fact, when there's no evidence of that being the case. Nightmares scare people, we see Max's fears and the possibility of all those things would indeed frighten Max. We also see a vision of Chloe come in and tell the Nightmare!Max to stop fucking with Max's head.

The idea of one timeline is supported by the way that we see images. They are not existing side-by-side, they are burned away and replaced.
With one timeline, when Max rewinds time she is bringing back the timeline a few seconds before letting it continue so she can act with knowledge of what's going to happen. When she does a photo jump, she is hopping back in time and any alterations will have consequences since those are now past events. That's where the autopilot Max comes in to prevent Max from messing up too many things or alerting people that she knows things that will happen. Things she shouldn't know or wouldn't be able to know.
Once the timeline has progressed to the current point, the point when Max originally left into a photo jump, then she regains control and all of her memories back.

There is nothing wrong with saying there's a single timeline.

I explained how the autopilot Max works and how it can exist under a single timeline. You haven't provided any evidence of multiple timelines/universes other than saying that you believe it, therefor it's true.
The autopilot Max is what allows there to be only one timeline since once she leaves a photo and forgets what she did, everything is new to her. She will react as she would to seeing something for the first time and that's what ensures continuity in the timeline. Once Max reaches the point she left from then she will again become aware of now-nonexistent events because knowledge of them will no longer cause a deviation in the timeline or have Max draw attention to herself.

Eh, the multiverse theory has been speculated here plenty of times, mainly after the game ended.
Many people don't like it becaus they are uncomfortable with the idea that different Maxes/Chloes are left to die or other mess in other timelines.

Personally I always assume any time travel story unless explicitly stated otherwise utilizes the multiverse theory since it's what makes the most sense from scientific point of view, but the game is never clear on it and the devs like to play the "ambiguous" card a lot to allow everyone's theories to live so you'll never get a confirmation or denial.

I said how that's not necessarily the case since Max is someone special and her power allows her to change the timeline and recognize that it has changed. The Maxes in the other timelines are just as much Max as her. This means that nothing at all matters and we are still left to our devices just like before. Even if we knew it to be true that all possibilities exist parallelly at all times, that wouldn't make us any wiser about anything we do in our lives, wouldn't have the least bit effect on our existence and decisions. Okay, I've finished Ep 5 and have the full list of lines (almost 2,000 words). Just need to edit everything into a nice picture.

I've seen it theorized that Christian Divine was basically singlehandedly responsible for everything good about the game - the characterization, the subtleties, the hints at larger backstory with the Native Americans, etc - but Michel and DONTNOD had the ending written in stone from the start of development and whatever Christian did, it had to end up there.
After this playthrough I could definitely believe that, as the second half of Ep 5 bordered on downright schizophrenic writing, wherein characters would express contradictory sentiments about the storm practically within the same sentence. It definitely felt like Christian's vision of the game was forced together with Michel's at the last second.

I definitely give Christian Divine a lot of credit for creating a large part of Max's personality and doing the writing for her diary which constantly reaffirms her dedication to Chloe. As well as pointing out what Max's observations about her powers are.
At the same time I also don't blindly hate Michel. Yes, he and the other writers, botched the final episode and quite possibly expended their budget. However they also did allow us to save Chloe in the first place. If not for the multiple endings promise then we my have been forced to go along with the Bay ending. So at least they weren't entirely stupid.

Anyway, great job for doing all that. It probably won't stop some people trying to argue against it but it will be a very nice compilation for us to go through and save for future reference.

If there's ever discussion options that are essentially "Rachel vs Max" then I'm siding with Max in my first playthrough, even though at that point she is away from Chloe. Though technically, Max's words about how she will always be there for Chloe said in Episode 4 still happened regardless of any future events.
On a second playthrough, I will see just how close can Chloe get to Rachel. Chloe has already shown that she can outdork Max at times.

The prequel could go a few ways since we don't know a timeline yet about Rachel.
Her attempts to leave the town could have been earlier before she met Chloe, in which case we wouldn't be able to hold that against her.
Her sleeping with guys wasn't cheating on Chloe since they were never together, but she did lie to Chloe about Frank which wasn't cool since they were supposed to be friends and be honest.

I think two biggest lessons about Chloe in the prequel will be:
-She can still have fun during that time (Even if she's missing Max and still torn up about William)
-She may have done more for Rachel than she realized.

We've heard about how Rachel was Chloe's "Angel" but from the gameplay preview, it looked more like Chloe was the one supporting and trying to help Rachel. Even at her weakest, Chloe is still strong.
Chloe's biggest thing is she doesn't want to be alone, which really isn't too hard of a problem to solve, Rachel clearly has a larger problem than that. Maybe we will learn that Chloe was Rachel's Angel.
Getting to know Rachel won't show us every single thing about her but it will definitely give us a better picture of who she is.
Even with what we know now I don't hate her or think she was a terrible friend, I think she just made a big mistake. Like Max did by not contacting Chloe for five years. I can't really judge Rachel because I don't know her yet.

On a side note, I also hope we see a nice moment between Chloe and Joyce.

They totally could do it if they really wanted to. They would have to have both endings link up to the same thing which wouldn't be too difficult. Just have an opening scene for each ending or go back and make it so the canon choice is a third one that allows the story to continue.

Well they can do it by understanding that max till has stories to tell, she still has growing to do and changes to go through, she barely hit womanhood even after the events of the game, she there was a lot of implied "max has grown up" but she still has a lot more to go through.
The bae ending has a lot more open ending and dispute being a bay fag on my first playthrough i am leaning more towards bae ending just because it seems to set up a sequel a lot better leaving most of the characters fates unknown to be revealed later. Plus its entirely possible that the storm still comes after bay ending and kill chloe did nothing.

I want them to continue Maxs journey more than anything. But i think Dontnod is going to get full of themselves and think they can pull a Fargo or American horror story like series.where things just sort of "reset" after each season with new characters and such.

I dont see myself caring about LiS2 knowing what we know now, which granted is next to nothing but i know how game devs work especially non english speaking ones, I tried to justify they were throwing us off the trail by being vague with the fate of max and chloes story possibly continuing in a LiS2 because they have been very vague and not really confirmed anything. but i know that vagueness is a Europe thing and not them being tricky. I did infact notice that too and i've been justifying it and using it as hope.
I've also been trying to hold on to hope by justifying the interviews where they said "they THINK maxs story is over and if they made a season 2 would feature new characters" by remembering they were actually done pre episode 4 and 5 and they were unsure if they would be able to do a sequel at this time. there is almost no post interview with them at least anywhere i can find.

I know. I don't have much hope either but considering I never even thought a prequel would happen, that does show things can change (Even if this isn't Dontnod's doing).
I totally get and respect that Dontnod wants to expand their horizons and try new ideas and games. Maybe in a few years they will feel comfortable with the idea of going back to the original LiS and continuing it. If not, then at least they knew when to walk away and won't cause any more damage.
Most people who had big issues with the ending have already continued the story in their minds and found some level of peace with it.

A few minutes more to the bae ending definitely would have been for the better. Open endings can be done well, but this was not one of those cases. There was no closure or satisfaction, the story just sopped.
But if everyone was satisfied with the endings then it's less likely /lisg/ would be where it is today, so there's that. As much as I want to see more I am also concerned that if Dontnod did elaborate then they would just confirm everyone's fears that a lot of people died.
I don't like the thought of Max losing her friends and I especially hate the thought of Chloe losing her mother. They've been through enough torment.

Vampyr won't effect things. Dontnod has enough money for it to be a total flop and still finance LiS S2 and probably another original game.
Besides, S2 is already in some form of heavy development so they won't completely stop and change their path.
Tons of people have asked for more Max and Chloe and Dontnod has said that story is done. Maybe by some miracle LiS S3 will have them return but as of right now, begging won't get anywhere, nor should it since if people are forced to continue a story they don't want to then you risk it turning out being crap.

I suck at graphic design and it took like three hours to make, but I'm happy it's done.
Honestly paying close attention to the final lines of Ep5, it's almost humorous how much Divine shits on the Bay choice. Max literally says "I'm not trading you" immediately before you have to choose, and the diary has three straight pages of gushing about how she's destined to live her life with Chloe (I only included the first)

It's a bit anemic for the first couple episodes, but after the pool scene the big guns come out.

She has a fair amount given the short time she appeared in the game. We learned about her insane family through messages. Her innocence was clear through her drawings and the way she reacted to the bullying. That showed how much she trusted humanity's good nature. She couldn't bear the idea of other people treating her that way or her family viewing her like that.

Max is the opposite. She's like most art school students: an ordinary person who's very skilled and passionate about a creative craft. Other than that, she's what most hipsters esteem to be. Nothing that special there.

To the person who brought up Beowulf as an example, his character wasn't deep or particularly good. The story was more about espousing the beliefs of a culture, like the Epic of Gilgamesh. Neither was character driven; both were about the themes; they served more as allegory than narrative.

I'll summarize in case you don't want to read the whole OP: basically his point was that the ending choice doesn't matter from a moral standpoint because no matter what, both of those universes/timelines exist already, and are going to continue existing no matter which one you choose to stay in. So in reality you're just choosing which timeline your Max wants to continue her life in, the one where Chloe dies but Arcadia Bay is saved, or the one where Arcadia Bay is destroyed, everybody else dies, but Chloe lives.
Both of these timelines already exist, you're just choosing which one you want to live in from here on out, so why the hell would Max choose to live in the timeline where she lets Chloe die?
