And if you want negatives for FNV, here you have the the biggest offender: Obsidian didn't develop the game by themselves and with their own assets.

Literally almost EVERYTHING that's wrong in New Vegas is Bethesda's fault, in one way or another:

- The shit engine with everything that entails: janky animations, ugly caracter graphics, very buggy, happy to crash.
- The 18 months given to Obsidian to make a spin-off game that didn't overshadow its predecessor. What Obsidian did was give the middle finger to Bethesda and say "fuck it, we want to make a game that rivals Fallout 3". That is why the game is as big as Fallout 3, yet has many more quests, more factions, much more interesting characters and is better in every single way. At the expense of that, the game naturally feels unfinished and was very buggy at release.
- The lack of proper QA from Bethesda.
- Having to cater to the same audience as Fallout 3, which is the reason the game is so piss easy.

Other stuff is indication that open world RPGs like Fallout 3 simply aren't Obsidian's thing, like exploration being the focus of the game that is supposed to be an RPG.

I would love to see what Obsidian could do with the Fallout license in their hands.

Almost every mod I use for New Vegas makes one out of two things better:

- The gunplay (thanx Bethesda for Oblivion with guns)
- Ramps up the difficulty by making the existing mechanics deeper (thanx Bethesda for shallow and meaningless mechanics)

Ironically the only thing that doesn't need ramping up is the weapon modding, the iron sights and the survival mechanics, because they were added by Obsidian and are fairly cool already.

- Four have made it to the RPG Codex's Top 70 PC RPGs. Only Daggerfall and Morrowind have made it to that list, from Bethesda.
- One is hardly an RPG (South Park), the other is considered shit (Dungeon Siege III).
- Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny have been rated much higher than Fallout 4 by that same forum.

It's no contest once you ask actual RPG fans and not your typical casual gamer and "professional" reviewer.

I can tell you right now why it is worthless to listen to any professional reviewer: their opinions don't reflect reality. Skyrim was rated as one of the best RPGs ever made by professional journalists, and anyone who has played actual RPGs knows that simply isn't true. Why? Because Skyrim is not an RPG, Skyrim is a "pretend to be" videogame. Whereas in an RPG you "are" the character and the world reacts to you, in Skyrim you "pretend to be" a certain character, and the world acknowledges nothing.

This is why you can be Archmage of Winterhold while being a simple warrior, for instance. All I hear from people who dislike the Codex is

Have you played Skyrim? Did you know you can rise to Archmage by casting a handful of extremely basic spells, effectively rendering your "most powerful sorcerers" argument completely meaningless?

Skyrim is not Morrowind. In Morrowind you could become Archmage while playing as a warrior, because Morrowind had skill requirements and whether you liked it or not you WOULD be a badass mage anyway, despite your playstyle.

In Morrowind, you could became archmage without ever having cast a single spell the whole game becuase Morrowind only ever checked your stats, and not how you got them, or used them.

In skyrim, and to a lesser extent Oblivion, you actually have to cast spell, and hold them, to get through the questline.

You, quite literally, have to actually SHOW more magic proficiency then you ever did in Morrowind.

This is especially true in the master spell quests, and one of the reasons they dropped Morrowind's nonsense system of "tell not show"

At a fundamental level, yes, it does make sense.

If you are a wizard, and want to be promotted, you have to show you can cast spells, something you didnt have to show at all in Morrowind.

Does that mean I think Skyrim is perfect? No, its a massive step in the right direction, but I do feel like they needed more places where you had to cast more spell, and had to cast higher level spells.

But, in general, compared to Morrowind, Skyrim was a godsend since you actually had to DO something, rather then just hae NPCs look at your stat sheet.

No videogame will truly offer the wonders of actual roleplaying in a tabletop game. But New Vegas at least has requirements for different actions you can perform, which Skyrim has not.

Skills being mentioned in conversations is an antiqued holdover from the D&D tapbletop game, and the early days of RPGs, where everything had to be abstracted, and done through dialogue, since the actual gameplay was to primtive to show anything.

It's not "outdated gameplay design". It's core RPG design: to distinguish what the player can do from what the character can do. Just because I know how to convince someone doesn't mean my character should know too, and thus skill checks fall in place.

It doesn't even need to be a "skill" check, it could be a check of any kind, but there HAS to be a check. For example, instead of needed "25 Survival" to know how to extract the poison gland from a Radscorpion, I would have to read a specific book for that.

Otherwise, I'm expected to assume my character is simply good at everything.

What you consider to be an "outdated design mechanic", as I said, isn't so: it's basic RPG design. When you replace that basic RPG design for a mini-game you lose part of the RPG. And I don't need to talk from theory, I actually have a good example of my own:

- In vanilla New Vegas, I was never unable to open a locked door or unlock a terminal. Those use mini-games, which I beat with my player skill.
- In modded New Vegas, with Immersive Minigames, I have broken plenty of locks and locked many terminals. The mod removes the mini-games and uses your character skill instead.

You are free to argue which one you find more enjoyable. You can't argue over which is truer to the spirit of an RPG, because the latter undeniably is.

Hey this is story fag, I was wanting to ask a question. I've been slowly adding more scars to my Merc as the story has gone on, but it isn't noticable much because of the respirator.

The question is, i've had a clothing mod that adds eye patches for a while, and I've been thinking of maybe having my merc lose an eye. Does this sound as cringy to everyone else as it does in my head?

I think what could have improved fallout 4 is to make raiders more of a situational thing. Every trash can fire with 4-8 scruffy people wearing leathers and metal bits would be survivors, who might act as raiders or neutral'ish scavengers (who attack whoever wins a nearby fight, if they think they can win, if not they grab whatever's of value then run), or they might decide the player or whoever passes by is too much trouble to bother with and just stare at their barrel fire.

Player could then earn a reputation as either someone who kills anyone who attacks them which would result in fewer attacks by low level units, but result in uncommon attacks by named high level units, or earn a reputation as someone who attacks everything they see, in which case most low level units would just run from the player's presence, or snipe from a long distance/"setup boobytraps" in the player's way.

While jobs wouldn't have been shipped overseas, we see in The Pitt that people were being mass replaced with protector workers.

The economic collapse in Detroit(at least for the normal people) would have likely been far worse in Fallout's unvierse then in ours.

Also, Lord Ashur's reach extends all the way out to Detroit(in theory based on how far his realm is known on the east coast), and he makes no mention of it, or any other Midwestern city, so its unlikely to be in any stable position.
